Good information - not my favorite writing 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is interesting, & I agree with the information presented. I like how the authors cite research studies to support their ideas/recommendations. I also found the information on how children learn math & reading very interesting.

I read the book straight through over a couple of weeks & found it quite repetitive (I realize that the book is also meant to be read in segments). There are a couple of paragraphs in different chapters that are virtually identical. I also think the authors discouraged flash cards at least 20 times, which I found annoying.

Editorial Review:

Now Available in Paperback!

In this book two highly credentialed child psychologists offer a compelling indictment of the growing trend toward accelerated learning. It's a message that stressed-out parents are craving to hear: Letting tots learn through play is not only okay-it's better than drilling academics!

Drawing on overwhelming scientific evidence from their own studies and the collective research results of child development experts, and addressing the key areas of development-math, reading, verbal communication, science, self-awareness, and social skills-the authors explain the process of learning from a child's point of view. They then offer parents 40 age-appropriate games for creative play. These simple, fun--yet powerful exercises work as well or better than expensive high-tech gadgets to teach a child what his ever-active, playful mind is craving to learn.

very touching and humorous 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

My three favorite books about growing up, "My Dog Skip", "The Old Man and the Boy", and this book, "Growing Up" by Russell Baker, were all written by newspaper and magazine journalists with Southern roots. There must be some southern storytelling tradition that turns out writers of great memoirs. This is a charming book, full of love of family, humor, and growing up during the difficult history of the depression. I have read and re-read this book, and always find something to laugh about or something that touches me deeply. I expected the reviews of this book to be all five-star accolades, and I am shocked and alarmed by the several reviewers who found the book "boring" and "repetitive". I can't help but wonder what comprises excitement in such readers' lives.

Editorial Review:

Russell Baker is the 1979 Pulitzer Prize winner for Distinguished Commentary and a columnist for The New York Times. This book traces his youth in the mountains of rural Virginia.

When Baker was only five, his father died. His mother, strong-willed and matriarchal, never looked back. After all, she had three children to raise.

These were depression years, and Mrs. Baker moved her fledgling family to Baltimore. Baker's mother was determined her children would succeed, and we know her regimen worked for Russell. He did everything from delivering papers to hustling subscriptions for the Saturday Evening Post. As is often the case, early hardships made the man.

Reassuring, practical AND witty 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Twinspiration is a fantastic book for individuals looking for a personal and pragmatic approach to managing the birth and care of twins. Ms. Lage has written from the heart about her own experiences as a mother of twins and offers guidance resulting from those experiences. Her book is packed with relevant information about how to prepare for twins (from pregnancy to what you'll need before you bring them home), how to manage the needs of two babies simultaneously and how to manage your life post twin birth. She leaves no stone unturned. The majority of the book addresses the nitty-gritty reality of having twins at home. Some examples include: holding and feeding two babies at one time, coping when both infants need you at once, managing two baby carriers, grocery shopping and maneuvering a double stroller. Believe me, these are things that will matter, particularly if you've never had children before. She also thoroughly addresses concerns, considerations and other practical matters during pregnancy.
When you read Twinspiration, expect a book that will prepare, encourage, reassure and make you laugh. I found it to be invaluable.

Editorial Review:

Twinspiration combines guidebook how-to with personal diary to lead mothers through pregnancy and the first year of their twins' lives. This carefully laid out book provides an array of information from the basics to the questions you are too afraid to ask with humor and honesty. This is the must have all in one resource for any couple that is expecting twins.

Editorial Review:

If John Holt had his way, today's primers would be replaced with the large-print edition of The New York Times, cursive handwriting would fade into disuse, and talking "cutesy-wootsy" to children would be considered a criminal act. This highly opinionated former teacher and original thinker spent the last half of his life challenging widely accepted classroom practices. The author of 10 books that concentrate on early child development and education, Holt is widely considered the father of the modern-day homeschooling movement because he grew to believe that schools stifle the learning process. In this, his final book--compiled by colleagues from drafts, letters, and magazine essays written by Holt before he died in 1985--he strings together his own observations and philosophies to show how young children can be encouraged to learn everything from reading and math to music and science.

Holt's thoughts carry the power of common sense. One of his pet peeves: the silly, nonsensical rules of phonics drilled into schoolchildren today. One of those adages, found on the walls of many an elementary school classroom, goes, "When two vowels go out walking, the first one does the talking." Holt points out that two pairs of vowels in the sentence violate the rule. This is not only confusing to some children, but simply "dumb," he complains. He dismisses picture books and primers, with their small, simple vocabularies. In their place, Holt urges parents to expose children to the Yellow Pages, warranties, letters, ticket stubs, and newspapers--the print trappings that adults rely upon for everyday life. Holt's call for context amid learning is delivered in a sensible, delightful writing style. He even includes several graphics and number games that can easily be used at home. Anyone who comes in contact with a small child would benefit from--and enjoy--reading these last words from a man who clearly adored and remained mesmerized by children and their inquisitive minds. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

For an understanding of the relationship between life experiences and brain development 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

As a child psychiatrist, I've recommended this book to area developmental specialists, teachers in early childhood education, and parents who have questions about understanding the relationship between brain development, behavioral and emotional development, and early life experiences.

It helps parents feel assured that negative experiences will not be destined to cause permanent adversity. It helps parents feel less guilty about "failing" to expose their child to Beethoven in utero. And it helps parents understand a bit about why early intervention for emotional, behavioral, and anxiety issues may be very protective.

Readers will come away from reading this book with a vivid picture of how the brain's neurologic connections are always dynamic--for example, if you sit in a room and practice piano for hours and hours, the areas of your brain responsible will become very dense and enriched. If you then stop practicing, that area will "prune" and become less enriched. Of course, early childhood is a time when the brain is more ready to learn many skills (language, for example) and the book explains this, too. But ultimately its message is that we can all explore and experience new things at any time--a very positive message!

I use some of the concepts presented in this book to educate parents about development, parenting, nurturance, and enrichment. I use some of the concepts to help others understand the impact of child abuse, and traumatic early experiences.

I haven't utilized the appendices that recommend specific books and toys for enrichment--I really believe in following a child in this regard, and so I make more personal recommendations to parents than a book can really do.

Editorial Review:

Cutting edge scientific research has shown that exposure to the right kind of environment during the first years of life actually affects the physical structure of a child's brain, vastly increasing the number of neuron branches--the "magic trees of the mind"--that help us to learn, think, and remember. At each stage of development, the brain's ability to gain new skills and process information is refined. As a leading researcher at the University of California at Berkeley, Marion Diamond has been a pioneer in this field of research. Now, Diamond and award-winning science writer Janet Hopson present a comprehensive enrichment program designed to help parents prepare their children for a lifetime of learning.

lucid presentation of latest infant development theories 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 20 people found this review helpful.

Daniel Stern is a world expert on infant development and psychiatry, as well as an iconoclastic and creative theorist. This book is a lucid and poetic presentation of his theories, accessible to the layman and full of treasures for the professional. It is the form of a set of small vignettes from significant stages in the devellopment of a little boy, Joey. The poetry is necessary because much of the concepts refer to pre-verbal stages of development, and it works very well. This book is a good companion read to _The interpersonal world of the infant_ which presents the ideas from a technical point of view, with the supporting scientific evidence.

Editorial Review:

Every new parent desperately wants to know what goes on in the mind of a baby. Now a noted authority on infant development and psychiatry brings us closer than ever before to penetrating a your child’s consciousness. In alternating sections of evocative prose, representing the baby’s own voice, and explanatory text, Daniel Stern draws on the latest research findings to recreate the baby’s world.”

Our Baby's Album- awesome 5 out of 5 stars.

Our Baby's Album: The First Five Years (Organizer Series)

I live in Australia and bought it for my twins locally in 2006 as it was such a fantastic comprehensive history of the the first 5 years of a child's life. It has so many great sections on everything and I am sure every child will look forward to knowing so much about their early life- what their first food was, what names mum and dad picked out for them, who came to their birthday parties and what presents did they get etc. STACKS of pages dedicated for photos, especially when they were born and every month leading up to their first year.

So I have bought it in 2008 through Amazon for our third baby so they all have matching albums and because nothing else compares to this album. Had it shipped over to Australia I love it that much!

Editorial Review:

This appealing baby album comes in a sturdy and elegant slipcase, so it will look new every time you take it out. With guided pages for every event and statistic you will want to record during babys first five years, as well as pages for photographs, this album organizes and preserves memories and records for posterity. Measures 10-1/2 wide x 11-1/2 high x 1-3/4 deep, slipcased; 112 pages of album-quality uncoated paper with 8 tabbed dividers. Covered wire-o binding.

An excellent guide for parents that is very practical. 5 out of 5 stars.
90 of 95 people found this review helpful.

As a teacher and parent of three, I found Homework Without Tears to be an excellent book on the subject. The problems most often encountered with children on this topic ("forgetting", not doing their best, refusing to do assignments, etc. are each dealt with individually in a systematic way. The book is very clear in stating the importance of homework in learning responsibility, and that parents must stand firm no matter the age of their children. Consequences are also discussed. Includes helpful charts/checklists.

Excellent advise! 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is worth its weight in gold! I was struggling to get my 8 year-old son to do his homework, and then I found help in this book. It's quick and easy to read, and full of useful suggestions and positive plans to teach your child healthy homework habits. The authors teach that praise and assertive communication are effective tools to motivate your child. They also stress the importance of communication with your child's teacher. Because of the authors' advise, my son now has a dedicated homework area (a desk in his room), and a mandatory homework routine (homework is finished before any TV or video games). The results are that he gets his homework done on time, and with good quality, or he loses privileges for things he enjoys. And guess what? It works. I highly recommend this book for any parent who's tired of the nightly homework battle.

Editorial Review:

Parents with school-aged children will find in this volume the help they need to create an unstressful learning environment in the home and motivate their youngsters to succeed in school.

although some of the topics in the book you already know if you've read other books on babies, found it to be very helpful and easy to understand the link between common recommendations and the science behind them, would highly recommend...

Editorial Review:

Now in paperback, a cutting-edge handbook for parents from a pioneer in infant brain development

Should you really read to your baby? Can teaching a baby sign language boost IQ? Should you pipe classical music into the nursery? Dr. Stamm translates the latest neuroscience findings into clear explanations and practical suggestions, demonstrating the importance of the simple ways you interact with your child every day. It isn’t the right “edu-tainment” that nurtures an infant’s brain. It is as simple as Attention, Bonding, and Communication, and it’s within every parent’s ability to provide. Practical games and tips for each developmental age group will show you not only what the latest findings are but, more importantly, tell you what to do with them.

Excellent resource for teaching babies/children chinese! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

A lot of research about the linguistic development of babies goes into Living Language's Baby First Words products. In this CD, the sounds of the Chinese language are presented through poems and traditional Chinese songs. It is easy on the ears and well produced. While this is geared at 0-2 year olds,I would also recommend it for older kids. My son is 3 and he has definitely picked up on the songs and words.

Editorial Review:

Before they focus in on their native language, babies have an amazing ability to hear and absorb sounds that adults unconsciously block out, like the subtleties of a foreign language. Baby’s First Words in Chinese is an introduction to the sounds of Chinese and “locks in” a child's ability to learn these sounds.

Created by linguistic experts, Baby’s First Words in Chinese is designed for newborns to toddlers up to two years old. Each package includes:

·60 minute CD of sweet and soothing songs, rhymes, words and stories
·Parents’ guide that explains how children learn languages
·Lyric sheet so that parents can sing along to the songs on the CD with their children
