Editorial Review:

Being a parent is usually all about giving of yourself to foster your child's growth and development. But what happens when this isn't the case? Some parents dismiss the needs of their children, asserting their own instead, demanding attention and reassurance from even very young children. This may especially be the case when a parent has narcissistic tendencies or narcissistic personality disorder. From the author of Working with the Self-Absorbed and Loving the Self-Absorbed, this major revision of a self-help classic offers a step-by-step approach to resolving conflict and building a meaningful relationship with a narcissistic parent.

Children of the Self-Absorbed offers clear definitions of narcissism and narcissistic personality disorder to help you identify the extent of your parent's problem. You'll learn the different types of destructive narcissism and how to recognize their effects on relationships. With the aid of proven techniques, you'll discover that you're not helpless against your parent's behavior and that you needn't consider giving up on the relationship. Instead, realistic strategies and steps are suggested for learning to set mutually agreed upon behaviors that can help you fulfill your needs and expectations.

excellent 5 out of 5 stars.

this is a fabulous book. the love of money over people and the disregard for substantive values are destroying our society. this book sheds a great deal of light on the ways that we are hurting our children and ourselves. it is extremely well-written and intelligent. you won't be disappointed.

Editorial Review:

In recent years, numerous studies have shown that bright, charming, seemingly confident and socially skilled teenagers from affluent, loving families are experiencing epidemic rates of depression, substance abuse, and anxiety disorders—rates higher than in any other socioeconomic group of American adolescents. Materialism, pressure to achieve, perfectionism, and disconnection are combining to create a perfect storm that is devastating children of privilege and their parents alike.

In this eye-opening, provocative, and essential book, clinical psychologist Madeline Levine explodes one child-rearing myth after another. With empathy and candor, she identifies toxic cultural influences and well-intentioned, but misguided, parenting practices that are detrimental to a child's healthy self-development. Her thoughtful, practical advice provides solutions that will enable parents to help their emotionally troubled "star" child cultivate an authentic sense of self.

great resource for to be teachers! 5 out of 5 stars.

Being a 2nd year early childhood education student at Miami University (in Ohio!) this book is very helpful in many ways. My first time reading it bored me to tears because it all seemed like common sense but reading the DAP section for 3-5 year olds was very interesting. I had done 2 weeks field expereince at a preschool and could compare what was developmentally approraite in the classroom I was in. Plus it was an excellent tool when going to do my assignments!
My professor claims that this is an excellent tool in helping us prepare to be teachers and I agree...we can relate what is in the book to our classrooms in the future. Plus for anyone out there wanting to be a mom it is a great resource as well!

Good source for EC teachers 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is fairly complete and has guidelines and all a teacher needs to know.
Most useful to student-teachers.
I wish the INFO could be presented in a more reader-friendly way.

America's favorite Supernanny returns to answer questions from confused, conflicted, and confounded parents across the country

As ABC's Supernanny and author of the #1 New York Times bestseller of the same name (which has sold nearly 300,000 copies), Jo Frost has no problem handling even the most, er, precocious children. Her upbeat, efficient methods and warm personality have endeared her to parents all over the United States -- and she's got the fan mail to prove it. In Ask Supernanny, Jo responds to the questions she hears time and time again in emails, letters, and personal appearances. Questions like:

-My son refuses to go to bed at the appointed hour. How can I put a stop to the endless pleading and cajoling? -My daughter will only eat food that's not touching anything else on the plate. What can I do to change this obsessive behavior? -Our two boys get into raging fights on a daily basis. Short of buying separate houses, what can we do? -And many more, on subjects like bed-wetting, bath time, homework, and independence.

Wordy without substance 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book was mostly fluff. All of the information in 168 pages could have been contained in a short pamphlet or booklet, at the least. She explains her basic premises in the first few pages, then goes on to explain more about them in the rest of the book. During the explanation, she repeats exactly what she had already said, then gives a bit more detail.

The book is based on her experience as a parent. She gives a couple of feel-good options, then just explains that every child is different and you should do what works for you. This book does not offer a plan, nor does is give many facts. It is completely based on the opinion of the author and does not include any research to back up her opinions. I found myself continually asking "why?" to things that she says, and not receiving an answer.

Most of what was in this book is easily found on the internet with a simple Google search. The one thing that I will take from the book is a reminder that potty-training takes time, like everything else children learn.

One thing I liked about the book was that it had pictures of children using the potty that I could show my daughter. I wish, though, that she had not included the picture of the boy unraveling all the toilet paper, or the girl with the potty seat on her head!

Great baby book - especially for boys! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This baby book is ideal for recording your baby memories. It has excellent prompts without making you feel like you have to write a book. Who has time for that with a newborn?! The pictures are precious, and I love the touching quotes and bible verses throughout. A great find!!

The Perfect Baby Journal! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for something that would record a lot of the baby's and toddler's "firsts." I highly recommend the Humble Bumbles Baby Journal: it covers all the high points and baby firsts, has ample room for a variety of pictures, and every page is unique and cheerfully illustrated. It has enough room to write down what you would like to record, but not so much that you feel compelled to compose a novel for each entry (something many new parents do not have time for)! This book is not gender specific, so it would make a perfect gift for even the parent who does not know the sex of their baby. Many posts have complained about the scripture verses, however that is something I prefer and appreciate in this book. Evenso, not every page has a Bible verse; some have really sweet quotations regarding childhood and parenting. This book is extremely well-done with much thought on the part of the author. I have been able to record in this book since the day my daughter was born...this is something I will be able to treasure even when she is grown!

Editorial Review:

A beautifully illustrated journal to record special moments and memories in a baby's first three years.

Editorial Review:

All over the U.S. and in over twenty countries around the world, Touchpoints has become required reading for anxious parents of babies and small children. T. Berry Brazelton's great empathy for the universal concerns of parenthood, and honesty about the complex feelings it engenders, as well as his uncanny insight into the predictable leaps and regressions of early childhood, have comforted and supported families since its publication in 1992. In this completely revised edition Dr. Brazelton introduces new information on physical, emotional, and behavioral development. He also addresses the new stresses on families and fears of children, with a fresh focus on the role of fathers and other caregivers. This updated volume also offers new insights on prematurity, sleep patterns, early communication, toilet training, co-sleeping, play and learning, SIDS, cognitive development and signs of developmental delay, childcare, asthma, a child's immune system, and safety. Dr. Sparrow, Brazelton's co-author on several other books, brings a child psychiatrist's insights into the many perennial childhood issues covered in this comprehensive book. No parent should be without the reassurance and wisdom Touchpoints provides.

Editorial Review:

The third book in the bestselling Baby Whisperer series -- the most comprehensive, up-close, and personal to date!

Thousands of parents have asked the Baby Whisperer to help them solve their problems. With this book you too can take advantage of the advice, insights, and parenting techniques from beloved child expert Tracy Hogg. "A problem is nothing more than a situation calling for a creative solution," she reminds us. "Ask the right questions and you'll come up with the right answers."

Once you learn how to translate banguage, the "baby-language" your infant uses to communicate needs, feelings, and opinions, you can see your child for who he or she really is -- an understanding that will serve you well as your child blossoms into the toddler years. By helping you establish a daily routine and tailor your parenting strategies according to your child's unique personality and stage of development, Tracy will teach you how to:

• Ask the Twelve Essential Questions to recognize potential problems and employ the Twelve Principles of Problem Solving -- simple troubleshooting techniques for everyday situations

• Avoid, or remedy, accidental parenting -- inadvertent adult behavior that often leads to such common parenting challenges as sleep problems, poor eating habits, separation anxiety, and tantrums

• Be a P.C. parent -- patient and conscious -- who knows how to detect prime times -- windows of opportunity for teaching babies how to get to sleep on their own, introducing bottles to breast-fed babies, toilet training, and other growth issues

• Inhibit runaway emotions and foster his or her emotional fitness -- the ability to understand and manage feelings

...and so much more. For Tracy's fans, this book will be a welcome addition to the Hogg library; for readers unfamiliar with her philosophy of care, it will open a new world of understanding and insight.

Editorial Review:

This streamlined revision of the breakthrough bestseller by renowned child-development expert Dr. Harvey Karp will do even more to help busy parents survive the “terrible twos” and beyond....

In one of the most revolutionary advances in parenting of the past twenty-five years, Dr. Karp revealed that toddlers often act like uncivilized little cavemen, with a primitive way of thinking and communicating that is all their own. In this revised edition of his parenting classic, Dr. Karp has made his innovative approach easier to learn—and put into action—than ever before.

Combining his trademark tools of Toddler-ese and the Fast-Food Rule with a highly effective new green light/yellow light/red light method for molding toddler behavior, Dr. Karp provides fast solutions for today’s busy and stressed parents. As you discover ways to boost your child’s good (green light) behavior, curb his annoying (yellow light) behavior, and immediately stop his unacceptable (red light) behavior you will learn how to soothe his stormy outbursts with amazing success—and better yet, prevent these outbursts before they begin! And the new thirty-item glossary of Dr. Karp’s parenting techniques will save you valuable time when you need to instantly calm an out-of-control child. The result: fewer tantrums, less yelling, and more happy, loving time for you and your child.

Sign with Your Baby Complete Learning Kit will enable you to communicate at new levels with your baby long before she can speak. This comprehensive package of book, video, and reference guide shows how simple gestures can communicate ideas like "I'm hungry" or "help me." Caregivers grasp baby's needs immediately rather than learn through trial and error. Dr. Joseph Garcia has designed the system so it's not necessary to learn an entire new language, although it also provides a terrific start in American Sign Language for a hearing-impaired child. A fascinating introduction delves into the development of language in children and uses informative line drawings to demonstrate over 150 hand signs for all kinds of actions and nouns. The accompanying video provides practical tips for getting started, some insight into the hows and whys of this method from Dr. Burton White (director of the Center for Parent Education), and inspiring sights of young babies signing effectively with their caregivers. The laminated quick-reference guide lists some of the most common words in any parent's day: cookie, no, and up are but a few. Garcia's clear, concise methods make learning a breeze, and caregivers gain outstanding new abilities to give the best possible care for the babies entrusted to them. --Jill Lightner
