No Advice on Weaning 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book before my son was born because I'd read that it is very important to have a good nursing manual. We thankfully received lots of support from the hospital and pediatrician, so the first time I really needed the advice in here was when I decided to wean him at seven months. Guess what? No information! This was basically another breastfeeding commercial and implied that if I weaned my child before 2 years, I was a horrible parent.

Look, bottom line is it would be nice if this book could simply serve the function of giving you much needed information about breastfeeding. Part of the journey is ending the breastfeeding relationship, and I think it's a huge oversight that weaning isn't discussed in detail. We get advice from enough sources as it is. Everyone has an opinion; I don't think it's right for a reference material to have one too.

Editorial Review:

Breastfeeding may be natural, but it is not always instinctive. The 20th Anniversary Edition of this classic guide to breastfeeding, beloved by a generation of women, has been completely revised and updated to provide even more practical, reassuring advice and support for today's expectant and nursing mothers. Easy-reference survival guides help identify and resolve problems at each stage. An appendix on drug safety is a unique feature among breastfeeding books.

Editorial Review:

Breastfeeding is natural, but it's not always easy. It is the biological norm, but it is not the cultural norm. By learning the seven basic principles in this book, mothers can dramatically increase their likelihood of success and make breastfeeding the enjoyable experience it should be. The seven laws taught in this book are easy for mothers to understand and are sure to help them avoid some of the pitfalls that they might otherwise face.

The seven principles include: 1. Babies Have the Urge to Self-Attach 2. Use the Power of Skin-to-Skin: A Baby's Natural Habitat 3. Breastfeed Ad Lib 4. Reach for the Comfort Zone 5. Expect Cluster Nursing 6. More Milk Out = More Milk Made 7. Babies Outgrow Breastfeeding

The book also addresses how to solve common problems and deal with special situations such as breast reductions and babies with special needs. The authors describe some of the social, psychological, and cultural reasons why breastfeeding is not currently the norm, and what this implies for mothers. In all, this is an easy-to-use breastfeeding resource for new mothers, which includes all the latest research and techniques used by those in the lactation field.

Wordy, but a good reference book 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Not having read any other book specifically on breastfeedding multiples, I can only say that this book does contain useful pointers for handling multiples. The biggest drawback to the entire book is that it is wordy and when you read it, you feel like it could have been 1/2 the length. This shouldn't detract from its usefulness but it does make it necessary to sift through the repeated messages to remember the tips. Should you get it? Yes, if you're anal retentive like me and have the need to feel like you know everything there is to know about nursing twin and want to ensure that you'll succeed.

Editorial Review:

A mother of multiple babies may find herself wondering if she can produce enough milk, how to coordinate feedings, and if breastfeeding is even an option for her. The simple answer: Yes! In the third revised edition of Mothering Multiples, author Karen Kerkhoff Gromada offers valuable information with an emphasis on breastfeeding and attachment-style parenting. All aspects of caring for multiple babies are addressed, including possible complications of pregnancy, preparing for a multiple birth, coping with newborns who might need to spend time in a NICU, establishing a milk supply for multiple babies, adjusting as a couple, and caring for toddler multiples.

Not helpful at all 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I have the 2nd edition and so maybe the 3rd is a huge improvement, but I didn't find this book helpful at all. It's basically one long cheerleading book for breastfeeding. I am fully in favor of breastfeeding, but whenever I would turn to this book for some actual helpful, specific information, all I got was more encouragement to breastfeed. Yeah, I AM doing that and everyone is being supportive, thanks, now how about some actual real world help? I found it really irritating.

Terrible!!! 1 out of 5 stars.

I received this book free in a breastfeeding class I took at a local hospital. I thought this book was absolutely terrible. It bashed hospitals, nurses, and anyone else not 100% involved and supportive of breastfeeding. I myself am planning on breastfeeding, as I am due in one week, and wanted to read up on the subject. I just thought the writer was overly negative about everything. It was a shame I wasted my time reading the book. I threw it right in the garbage after I was done. I am not even sure way I finished it. I was just hoping chapter after chapter it would get better. What a disappointment!

Editorial Review:

From bestselling author Janet Tamaro comes the third edition of So That's What They're For! For years, moms have relied on this staple book-now infused with new sections, including breastfeeding multiples and monitoring nutrition, and featuring completely revised and updated resource materials. Reflecting the latest in breastfeeding research, and packed with humorous anecdotes, this book proves (again) that breastfeeding advice does not have to be boring!

Alright 2 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

This book has some REALLY good info on why breastfeeding is best. However, if you don't subscribe to the author's way of parenting (attachment parenting) than you're better off reading another breastfeedng book that is soley about breastfeeding and not about pushing a way of parenting on to you that you may or may not agree with. Especially if you do plan on returning to work.

Editorial Review:

Not useful for working moms 1 out of 5 stars.
22 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I have an 11-month old son and have worked almost full-time for 4 months. This book is useless for working moms. After taking pains to say that nursing mothers shouldn't work, she goes on to say that if you do need/choose to work, pumping will be impossible to maintain long-term and that working mothers often choose to wean so they can stop pumping and get back to "socializing with their coworkers" at breaktime. As someone who has pumped in every imaginable situation in order to continue to breastfeed my son, I find this both ignorant and insulting. I will look elsewhere for advice on keeping on breastfeeding and working after my son turns 1.

Editorial Review:

The classic handbook for mothers who breastfeed their children past infancy in an updated expanded edition. Norma Jane Bumgarner puts the experience of nursing an older baby or child in perspective, within the context of the entire mother-child relationship. She cites biological, cultural, and historical evidence in support of extended breastfeeding and shares stories gleaned from thousands of families for whom breastfeeding and natural weaning have been the norm.
