A bit academic, but fascinating 4 out of 5 stars.

Formula had a predecessor: the wet nurse. Golden tracks her down during the 18th and 19th centuries in America, and documents in some detail how wet nursing was supplanted by formula and why. This is a great source of information for those who wonder about the early history of formula, and also for those who wonder why we don't have more human milk banks. Golden describes the forces pushing the ages of partial and full weaning down through the nineteenth century in all classes.

It's fascinating to hear how a lot of breastfeeding myths we think come from other parts of the world were alive and well in our own country as long as breastfeeding was alive and well. And at least in some contexts, they weren't myths at all. Breastfeeding women in the nineteenth century, particularly wet nurses who were tandem nursing, needed much better nutrition than the other servants, for example.

The ideas and information in this book deserve a larger audience.

Editorial Review:

A Social History of Wet Nursing in America: From Breast to Bottle examines the intersection of medical science, social theory, and cultural practices as they shaped relations among wet nurses, physicians, and families from the colonial period through the twentieth century. It explores how Americans used wet nursing to solve infant feeding problems, shows why wet nursing became controversial as motherhood slowly became medicalized, and elaborates how the development of scientific infant feeding eliminated wet nursing by the beginning of the twentieth century. Janet Golden's study contributes to our understanding of the cultural authority of medical science, the role of physicians in shaping child rearing practices, the social construction of motherhood, and the profound dilemmas of class and culture that played out in the private space of the nursery.

I DON'T AGREE WITH THE OTHER REVIEWER 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I am a single mom and my best friend bought this book for me. Because I am a new mom I don't know any of the authors out there. All of the books were confusing because I didn't know whose advice to take. Parent School is full of different advice by different experts so you get a taste of each of their beliefs. I've already bought Nancy Samalin's book because all of her information was in the back of Parent School. Because of Parent School I was able to pick an expert I really like and buy her book.
Parent School is a MUST-HAVE because for those of us who don't have a clue who the experts are this is the BEST PLACE TO START.

Perfect Gift 5 out of 5 stars.

Once I saw this book, I knew I had found the perfect gift for new parents, and parents just looking for some advice. What a great idea. Finally, a resource that teaches parents the lessons that they wished they had learned in school. Leading experts in the field provide their opinions on parenting, organized in an easy to follow lesson plan. Two close friends of mine just had babies and I plan to send each one of them this book.

Editorial Review:

A collection of 78 original essays from the most respected parenting authors of our time. These leading authorities have contributed what they consider to be their most valuable lesson (philosophy, tips, advice) for parents.

Editorial Review:

In the nineteenth century, infants were commonly breast-fed; by the middle of the twentieth century, women typically bottle-fed their babies on the advice of their doctors.  In this book, Rima D. Apple discloses and analyzes the complex interactions of science, medicine, economics, and culture that underlie this dramatic shift in infant-care practices and women’s lives.
As infant feeding became the keystone of the emerging specialty of pediatrics in the twentieth century, the manufacture of infant food became a lucrative industry.  More and more mothers reported difficulty in nursing their babies.  While physicians were establishing themselves and the scientific experts and the infant-food industry was hawking the scientific bases of their products, women embraced "scientific motherhood," believing that science could shape child care practices.  The commercialization and medicalization of infant care established an environment that made bottle feeding not only less feared by many mothers, but indeed "natural" and "necessary."  Focusing on the history of infant feeding, this book clarifies the major elements involved in the complex and sometimes contradictory interaction between women and the medical profession, revealing much about the changing roles of mothers and physicians in American society.

Editorial Review:

Humanity, argues Michel Odent, stands at a crossroads in the history of childbirth - and the direction we choose to take will have critical consequences. Until recently a woman could not have had a baby without releasing a complex cocktail of "love hormones." In many societies today, most women give birth without relying on the release of such a flow of hormones. Some give birth via caesarean section, while others use drugs that not only block the release of these natural substances, but also do not have their beneficial behavioral effects. "This unprecedented situation must be considered in terms of civilization," says Odent. It gives us urgent new reasons to rediscover the basic needs of women in labor.

At a time when pleas for the "humanization" of childbirth are fashionable, the author suggests, rather, that we should first accept our ‘mammalian’ condition and give priority to the woman’s need for privacy and to feel secure. The activity of the intellect, the use of language, and many cultural beliefs and rituals—which are all special to humans—are handicaps in the period surrounding birth. Says Odent: "To give birth to her baby, the mother needs privacy. She needs to feel unobserved. The newborn baby needs the skin of the mother, the smell of the mother, her breast. These are all needs that we hold in common with the other mammals, but which humans have learned to neglect, to ignore or even deny."

Expectant parents, midwives, childbirth educators, those involved in public health, and all those interested in the future of humanity will find this a provocative and visionary book.
