Odd but worth it 4 out of 5 stars.

Reading the other reviews, I can hear where other reviewers are coming from. It's true, this way of eating and exercising does not provide a one-size-fits-all approach, and often can seem odd. Dr. D'Adamo's Blood Type diet & exercise recommendations are explained in much more detail in earlier books. In particular, Live Right 4 Your Type would be a great introduction to the theory and science behind the Blood Type Diet (BTD). I see Eat Right 4 Your Baby (ER4YB) as a resource for folks who already have familiarity with the BTD and have found that it makes sense for them. I do wish that ER4YB included information regarding variations for non-secretors. As someone working towards getting healthy now, in anticipation of pregnancy in a few years, this information is very helpful to me, including in terms for maximizing fertility. I have lost 60 pounds in the last year from following these diet & exercise guidlines, and have seen a tremendous improvement in my energy, allergies, asthma, sinuses, and joint stiffness.

Editorial Review:

Dr. Peter J. D'Adamo applies his bestselling blood type diet plan to expectant parents and infants. This one-of-a-kind guide offers methods of maximizing health from fertility through every stage of pregnancy and the baby's first year:

A great resource that would make a thoughtful, unique gift! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In short, this is a quick, easy, interesting read that will make an excellent gift for a mother - new or experienced. The author has an engaging tone and a moderate, non-judgmental voice that should make any mother feel at ease, even if she ends up supplementing or not breastfeeding at all. I would feel totally comfortable giving this as a gift, without feeling pushy towards the mother.

The illustrations are quirky and the text is light and humorous. I enjoyed that because breastfeeding can be very stressful, scary and downright painful to a new mother. Per my quick Amazon searches, there simply aren't many fun, positive books regarding breastfeeding. Who wants to read a textbook if they don't have to? I'd rather have a friend holding my hand - and this book does just that by walking you through it in a reassuring and comforting manner.

Again, I think this would be a great, unique gift for a mother planning to breastfeed.

Editorial Review:

Breastfeeding may be natural, but it certainly isn't easy. That's why Andi Silverman wrote Mama Knows Breast, a beginner's guide that's full of friendly, frank, and reassuring advice. Readers will discover essential information on breastfeeding techniques, baby holds, and medical conditions. They'll also learn the straight scoop on gnawing infants, unexpected leaks, ill-fitting clothes, and bewildered spouses. Other topics include:

The pros and the cons of breastfeeding
When, where, and how to breastfeed in public
Feeling sexy in a nursing bra
Breastfeeding at the office

Written by a mom who has been there, and packed with anecdotes by women from a variety of backgrounds, Mama Knows Breast is a beautifully illustrated gift for new mothers everywhere.

Editorial Review:

Wildly funny tales and practical wisdom from the author's and other women's breastfeeding experiences-to reassure readers that there is no one way to be a great breastfeederIn this perfect antidote to "lactivist" propaganda, award-winning writer Andy Steiner weaves together hysterical anecdotes and tips from the trenches to offer comfort and realistic advice to new nursing moms. Spilled Milk will help them understand that not all babies are going to "get it" right away, that breastfeeding can hurt even if you're doing it correctly, and that baring your breasts in public will actually become shamefully easy with time.Steiner writes: "Looking back at my milky adventure, I realize now that while breastfeeding is a natural act, it's also a difficult one. And after amassing an impressive collection of how-to breastfeeding books, nipple shields, lactation consultants, breast pumps, nursing bras, storage bags, and wicked breast infections, I can only say that the one thing that was missing from the experience was a book that could tell me-in a casual, non-preachy tone-that I wasn't alone, that everything was going to be okay." That is the book that Steiner has written. Her fresh viewpoint; casual, girlfriend-to-girlfriend advice; and the book's great price make Spilled Milk the ultimate shower gift for moms-to-be.

Fantastic for new and not-so-new nursing moms 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Amy Spangler's (previous and now updated) book remained on my nightstand for 4 years straight, as I had 3 children in a span of 4 years. She covers all breastfeeding issues one can think of, addressing "normal" issues, as well as troubleshooting numerous different problems. I found her book to be extremely helpful for my one child where I had no nursing difficulties, as well as for my 2nd child with whom I had some nursing difficulties, and most importantly for my third child with whom I had significant nursing problems. Thanks in large part to Amy's book, I had an extremely rewarding nursing relationship with all 3 of my children. As an Associate Professor of Psychology with extensive clinical research publishing experience, I can also add that her book is very well-written and an invaluable resource for anyone embarking on nursing their baby.

Editorial Review:

A practical, step-by-step guide for today's parents-parents who wonder if breastfeeding will work in their busy lives. Friendly, personal, and honest, BREASTFEEDING, A PARENT'S GUIDE separates breastfeeding facts from myths. It answers the breastfeeding questions most often asked about breastfeeding and discusses the realities of breastfeeding for today's parents. Detailed drawings, clear instructions, and helpful advice make this the breastfeeding book parents refer to over and over again.

good, but needs a practical companion manual 3 out of 5 stars.
9 of 16 people found this review helpful.

As a devout breastfeeder, which I vowed to be during my pregnancy, I was determined that breastfeeding would be a success for my daughter and me. She was then born as a champion nurser, and I left the hospital certain that my brilliant girl and I would spend the next year enjoying this special experience together. Three weeks later, however, when she was on what they termed her second large growth spurt, and ate and cried frequently, leaving me in fairly significant pain and exhausted, I ordered The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding. This had been recommended by La Leche League and some friends, so I waited eagerly to see solutions to all of my breastfeeding woes.

What I got was a fairly lengthy tome about the virtues of breastfeeding, staying home with your children, and co-sleeping. Well, I can spout the benefits of breastfeeding with the best of them, and staying home isn't an option for me. I was given a lot of information about how different babies eat different amounts, that it's impossible to determine what schedule will be "normal" for each baby, and basically that direct breastfeeding was better than pumping. There were some helpful hints about dealing with mastitis and plugged ducts, but not many specifics beyond what any mom could suggest. Particularly unhelpful was the section about "choosing" to work, which described how mothers and babies are bonded and the impact on children of being separated from their mothers. As a working mother in a foreign country for my job, working for a company that will sue me if I quit, the word "choice" isn't in my vocabulary, so I didn't really appreciate the litany that nagged even more at my already bruised conscience.

This book does have some helpful guidelines, and can be very encouraging to anyone wanting to breastfeed but unsure of themselves. Since I was already confident and determined to nurse, it wasn't as helpful for me. If there was a companion manual entitled something like "The Practical Science of Breastfeeding," this would be a great counterpart. I just needed more specifics, about everything from pumping to hand expression to sleeping through the night. This was just a little too "everything is different for every family" for me.

Editorial Review:

Here's the 35th-anniversary edition of the big book on breastfeeding, written by the experts at La Leche League International. The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is a comprehensive resource guide providing just about everything you need to know about how--and why--to breastfeed your baby. Latch on to this book for step-by-step guides to early months, common concerns, problems, and weaning. Additional sections on general nutrition, sleep issues, going back to work, discipline, and fathering are useful for all breastfeeding mothers. Unfortunately the black-and-white photos are not always as clear as they should be, and the informative line-drawings are too scarce.
