If you’ve ever tried to tell your six-year-old how babies are made or your fourteen-year-old how condoms work, you know that grappling with telling your kids about sex can be a sweat-drenched exercise. Everything You Never Wanted Your Kids to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid They’d Ask) is a one-of-a-kind survival guide that will help you stay sane through every stage of your child’s sexual development. This indispensable guide covers all the bases, including:

• What to expect at each stage of your child’s development and how you can influence it from birth onward
• What to tell your kids at every age about sex and how to get the conversation going
• What to do when your five-year-old turns up naked with the girl next door, your toddler is rubbing on her teddy bear, or your six-year-old walks in on you having sex
• How to avoid unnecessary clashes with your middle-schooler while managing privacy, crushes, and what to wear
• How to encourage your teenager to use contraception without encouraging her to have sex, and how to help her choose the method that’s best for her

Editorial Review:

In modern childhood, free, unstructured play time is being replaced more and more by academics, lessons, competitive sports, and passive, electronic entertainment. While parents may worry that their children will be at a disadvantage if they are not engaged in constant, explicit learning or using the latest "educational" games, David Elkind's The Power of Play reassures us that unscheduled imaginative play goes far in preparing children for academic and social success. Through expert analysis of the research and powerful situational examples, Elkind shows that, indeed, creative spontaneous activity best sets the stage for academic learning in the first place: Children learn mutual respect and cooperation through role-playing and the negotiation of rules, which in turn prepare them for successful classroom learning; in simply playing with rocks, for example, a child could discover properties of counting and shapes that are the underpinnings of math; even a toddler's babbling is a necessary precursor to the acquisition of language. An important contribution to the literature about how children learn, The Power of Play suggests ways to restore play's respected place in children's lives, at home, at school, and in the larger community. In defense of unstructured "down time," it encourages parents to trust their instincts and resist the promise of the wide and dubious array of educational products on the market geared to youngsters.

Keep this on your Parenting Shelves for Peace of Mind! 4 out of 5 stars.

When my then 5 1/2 year old was behaving much differently than he had at age 5, my mother pulled out an old hardcover version of the Gesell Institute Books and - oh my! - much of the changes seemed to be quite common among 5 1/2 year olds!

These are 'old' books (I'm one of the earliest of the baby boomers, though my child is now nearly 9), but they are still useful.

This book and all in the series are little paperbacks, quick to read. Our society has changed since they were written, so a bit of the book may seem dated if you don't like 'traditional roles. However, there is much good information and wisdom in here, unencumbered by the modern day concerns about ADD and such. In expensive, a good investment to ease a parent's mind. A nice gift from grandparents to their own children, and for young parents, just nice to have on the shelf for those days when we forget that kids behaviors and interests change as they grow up.

Editorial Review:

Following the successful series that includes Your One, Two, Three, Four, Five, and Six Year Old, this look at seven-year-olds is filled with valuable insights and advice essential for parents of children this age.

Editorial Review:

Motherhood -- it's not for wimps.

Once the zigzagging hormones and endless, bleary-eyed exhaustion of the first year have worn off, you're left with the startling realization that your tiny, immobile bundle has become a rampaging toddler, complete with his or her very own, very forceful personality.

Just as Sippy Cups Are Not for Chardonnay helped debunk decades of parenting myths to offer honest advice for the first year, Naptime Is the New Happy Hour is a voice of reason for every woman facing questions such as: Will refined sugar make my toddler's head explode? Is it wrong to have a cocktail at two in the afternoon? And what exactly is a Backyardigan?

With biting wit and boatloads of common sense, Stefanie Wilder-Taylor addresses all these concerns and more. Whether it's planning easy outings that are fun for both of you (fact: your child will find the local Target just as scintillating as the Guggenheim), dishing the dirt on preschool TV (those mothers who swear their kids don't watch television? Liars or psychos, every one), or perfecting the art of the play date, readers will find advice, anecdotes, and a reassuring sense of camaraderie to help them survive -- and even thrive -- during each hilarious, frustrating, and amazing moment.

jury's still out... 2 out of 5 stars.

well, about 1/3 in to this book and while i am sure it'll have a few nuggets, i think the problem is that it comes from an indulgent perspective. Poor adolescents. They have it so tough. We can't be judgmental. We can't impose our will/beliefs/way on them. They think we're idiots.
Well, there are nuggets of truth in there. But it is also the perspective of a society that has so much self doubt, is so riddled with the idiocy that my fellow baby boomers infused into our culture, that it is afraid to exercise its rights to parent. There's no reason is it different from the days I was raised - the 60's and 70's except that adolescents and their willing accomplices - teachers, media, shrinks, counselors - want it to be different. Why should a parent have authority? SURE, sure, sure, adolescents go through change. But Mr. Riera comes from a place many of us don't want to come from - Berkeley, and San Fran, and i don't think those students or teachers, or parents are exactly who we want to emulate while we are trying to keep our kids headed in the right direction. Raise an adolescent, yes. Indulge them? Ridiculous. So I am not sure this is the answer many parents are looking for (but you may want to check out Backtalk!, which might be...)

Editorial Review:

This question-and-answer book helps parents understand and cope with issues of modern teenage life: alcohol, drugs, and parties; academics; sex; eating disorders; homosexuality; divorce and remarriage - while encouraging parents to move from being their child's manager to being their consultant. The author's upbeat, unpatronizing approach to teenagers promotes true communication and understanding between parents and teens.

Here's the deal... 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

So I've decided that I should also put my two cents worth in regarding the book and other comments here. This is Alicia, and yes, my son Ewan is mentioned in the book under the Special Needs section.

First off, is this book for everyone? Maybe not, no book, no theory, no treatment plan out there is for absolutely everybody. But give it a shot if you've got a child that is a picky eater or problem eater, it's 12 bucks that could change your life. Secondly, keep your mind open. If your mind is already closed to new ideas and new ways of doing things it's hard to help anyone, including your child.

Third, the whole 'encourages a child to eat junk food' notion is off base. The problem stems from the fact that these children have ALREADY self limited their foods to the, let's say, not the healthiest foods on the market. That's why many of the chains focus on moving from McNuggets and 'junk' food that someone else mentioned. My son was one of these children that the only 'meat' he would accept was a chicken McNugget--hence our chain started from there and grew. He now eats a variety of meats but in all honesty, he's not a real big meat lover, he eats some but not all meats...it's just not his 'thing'.

As for the moving from junk food to broccoli and healthy foods idea--you bet your behind my son did that. He is living proof that food chaining took him from pop-tarts, McNuggets, popcorn, and chips to eating foods like raw spinach leaves, broccoli, salsa, green peppers, cabbage, lettuce, blueberries, strawberries, cherries, apples, oranges, pineapple...well you get the point, a very healthy diet. I'd match my son's diet now up against the healthiest of stone age diets out there!

How in the name of all that is holy did that happen? Well, first this team actually looked at my son with open eyes and found an underlying medical problem called Eosinophilic Esophagitis that had been making eating a painful experience for him. So please don't scoff when you say, oh this is only for kids that are obviously really sick...some underlying problems are very hidden and can be a factor in why child is limiting their food intake. My son was one of those children that looked healthy and no one would have guessed that was going on.

Now let me also say that when you order this book you do not also get a complimentary magic wand in the mail. There is NO magic wand that transforms your child from a picky or problem eater into this kid like "Mikey" from the commercials that will eat anything. A good thing to keep in mind is that we ALL have foods we DON'T like! Food chaining, or any treatment plan for tackling these type of eating / feeding issues, takes time. It takes time, patience, understanding, and knowledge of how we eat and how we discover new foods and new tastes. Food chaining can be fun and exciting if you let it, if you open your mind to food, tastes, eating, and new experiences.

So I encourage those of you struggling with feeding and eating issues to give this book a good chance and read it. It's very user friendly with lots of terms and descriptions spelled out and is a very systematic way of looking at the problem!

very useful book 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I highly recommend this book. Very helpful, especially for those parents that fail to be consistent and "go with the flow", failing to create strong rules and a loving, solid discipline.
This books acts a self-confidence booster for parents, offers very empathetic advice when it comes to parental anger, and actually gives very practical tips and hints to deal with misbehavior.
I love the humor and the bright, positive thinking that fills up the book, and I really appreciate the fact that Pantley also addresses other side issues like marriage skills and parental self-esteem.
Overall a great book.

Editorial Review:

Featuring a Foreword by popular parenting book author Dr. William Sears, this concise and straightforward book is filled with applied skills that teach children to cooperate, end sibling fights, boost children's self-esteem, and help parents handle discipline and anger with understanding and authority. An enlightening "parenting style" quiz reveals typical patternss and pitfalls.

Wow! Best parenting book I've ever read, by far. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

A few years back, a friend of mine gave me a copy of this book. I read through it, liked what I read, and decided to try a few of the suggestions it contained. I was AMAZED at how insightful and effective the approach in this book is. I am a parent and I also work in a school, and this book has made a significant impact in improving the environment both at my home and at the school. More important than the techniques and suggestions outlined in the book, though, is its general philosophy: all misbehavior is communication -- if you understand the goal of the misbehavior, you can avoid yelling and fighting with your kids and instead "redirect" the behavior and discipline in a way that is more loving AND more effective. Eventually, I contacted the company that publishes this book and got trained through them to teach the corresponding parenting course -- also amazing. I strongly recommend this book to all parent of children or teens, as I feel that it's relevant to both age groups.

Core skills knowledge 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I first took this as a course in 1991 for my own daughters sake and now as a licensed counselor in Orlando, Fl I have helped several hundreds of children and their parents with this 3rd edition of RCB. Most parents say it should be called Redirecting Children's and Parent's Behavior because it changes the whole dynamics of how to effectively communicate as a family. It teaches how to recognize the four motivations (for any age) for misbehavior and gives plenty of examples of how to redirect behaviors in a positive direction. The earlier parents use this knowledge, the better the results for a happy family environment. All actions have consequences, so I highly recommend implementing this jewel of knowledge.

Editorial Review:

LEARNING BEGINS AT BIRTH! Research on brain development has shown that any attempt to maximize intellectual growth must begin the first three years of life; the younger the child, the stronger the effect. Beginning education at age five is too late!

The new, large (8 ½ x 11 inch), 352-page 4th edition of SLOW AND STEADY GET ME READY includes 260 weekly, age-appropriate developmental activities that are easy to understand and do. This unique book is your answer to early childhood education and now contains updated illustrations, Measurable Parameters To Profile Child Development, Tips For Solving Behavioral Dilemmas, The Early Brain and Important Points.

SLOW AND STEADY GET ME READY is a highly recommended early childhood developmental parenting resource that tells you when, how and what skills to develop, provides an inexpensive phonetic approach for reading and spelling, contains a complete readiness curriculum full of ideas, enriches the parent child bond with close interaction and develops preschool skills, painlessly and in proper order. It only takes only about ten minutes for each activity.

This wonderful, helpful book now provides an easy, cost-saving method to measure the progress of a child to determine when the child should be ready for kindergarten. A simple checklist guide of developmental characteristics has proven to be a useful tool for parents and childcare providers to monitor progress by observation for children from birth to age five. This guide is useful for parents, teachers, Head Start, etc., because there is little paper work – just a checklist.

SLOW AND STEADY GET ME READY was divinely inspired and is based upon Mark 9:36-37. Jesus taught his disciples to welcome children. This was a new approach in a society where children were usually treated as second-class citizens. Unfortunately, children are often still regarded as second-class citizens around the world. We hope that by interacting with them closely in an appropriate manner, as recommended in this book, parents will realize children are their most precious asset and will treat them accordingly.

This valuable, but inexpensive, resource has been found to be useful for children with special needs (e.g., autism, learning disabilities, Down’s Syndrome, etc.).

SLOW AND STEADY GET ME READY is an inexpensive book that provides 5 years of activities at approximately a penny a day!

The best thing to spend on your child is your time!
