Editorial Review:

This book tastes great and it's good for you, too. Feeding Your Child for Lifelong Health: Birth Through Age Six is based on the principle of "metabolic programming," the scientifically rooted idea that foods eaten in early childhood directly affect the function of individual cells that control strength, intelligence, the immune system, and other vital functions. Think of it as a convoluted molecular take on the old maxim "You are what you eat." Genetics and other external factors also play a role, of course, but those factors are beyond our control. What goes on the dinner table, however, is not. The point of this book is to help parents teach their kids to like healthful foods, thus getting them into a lifelong habit of eating well and staying healthy.

There is a fair amount of science in this book, but the clear writing and good organization make it go down easy. Particularly helpful are the numerous graphs and boxes that highlight such topics as the best sources of calcium and iron (and why too much iron is dangerous), the differences between breast milk and formula, the eight key nutrients for different ages, and how to identify and even prevent allergies and intolerance to certain foods. The recipes, sample meals, healthy snacks, and tips for dealing with finicky eaters are alone worth the price of the book. Feeding Your Child for Lifelong Health is an invaluable guide to ensuring that not only will your kids eat their vegetables, they'll even ask for seconds. --Shawn Carkonen

mixed feelings 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

honestly, this book is a bit dry. i use it for a Early Education Development class and i think it's more of a sociology book. it gets a bit repetitive and basically explains what is expected from the title. it just continually goes back to mention that after all the information given about different cultures, the importance of a caregiver being aware of social differences and emphasizes cultural competence when dealing with a child and their family. above all, this book is truly informational, especially from chapters 4 through 9 i think, when it gives a chapters worth of history each on different ethnic groups (african american, anglo-saxon/european, native american, latino, etc.). i suggest using this book for a sociology class or any class that deals with understanding different cultures.

Great resource! 4 out of 5 stars.

I got this book for a speech-language pathology graduate course on multicultural issues in the field of Speech Path, but it is a truely great resource for anyone who is or will be working with different cultural backgrounds or anyone who is interested in learning more, maybe evwen about their own cultural background. I like that the book discusses traditions/beliefs of the different cultures both in the US and the other countries. Also, I was impressed by the number of different country cultures included and not just continental "cultures" all rolled into one.

Really Unique Book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is the PERFECT gift for "expecting" grandparents. It's logically organized by chapters of traditional names, foreign language names (including the likes of Cherokee and Cajun names), names that pop up unexpectedly and names that only children can come up with. The inside pages are formatted in a fun, colorful way (no dreary lists here!)with plenty of patterned pages and charming anecdotes. It will totally inspire and entertain you.

Editorial Review:

You Can Call Me Hoppa! The Grandparents' Guide to Choosing a Name that Fits is a collection of grandparent names and stories designed to assist modern grandparents in finding the answer to the 'what to be called?' question. Think baby name book for Boomers! We hope that you enjoy perusing the pages of possibilities, whether you are a first-time grandparent, one who is relatively established or a step-grandparent. Most of us are given a name at birth and don't again get the opportunity to choose a name that truly represents who we are until we reach grandparenthood. The names and stories in this book include traditional titles, cultural appellations and names that are perfectly personal. But the most captivating collection of monikers is found in the Out of the Mouths of Babes section. The name that is right for you may not be contained within the pages of this book, but we hope that we can provide you with the inspiration you need to choose a name that fits!

Editorial Review:

The perfect gift for soon-to-be (or even has-been) dads, Keeping the Baby Alive till Your Wife Gets Home is a tongue-in-cheek peek at modern parenting from a father’s point of view. It’s as funny, page-by-page, as the title promises, and all of the laughter is backed by candid advice. The spoof, clearly targeted at today’s career-minded mom-and-dad team, romps merrily from subtle to slapstick.Yet under the surface Keeping the Baby Alive focuses consistently on the complex feelings new fathers encounter but are reluctant to talk about.

The breezy, irreverent humor escorts dads through basic topics such as home-from-the-hospital adjustments, postpartum do’s and dont’s, diaper-changing, feeding, difficult infant behavior, child care choices, the walking/talking stage, father-baby games and more.

Inspired by Mr. Roark’s first-born, Meghan, the original manuscript was set aside for years. Brought to life now for the first time by Clearing Skies Press, the publication of Keeping the Baby Alive has an unusual twist to it. Now a teenager, Meghan, the book’s original inspiration, actually contributes to the work’s humorous illustrations. It’s a story with a happy ending for a very special father-daughter team.

Good info but ... 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book is full of good information, organized by 1 month per chapter. I only wish there was more information in each chapter, because I'm only reading the month my son is old, and its a quick read. Then I wait another month to read the next chapter. My biggest complaint, and I saw someone else said this also in a review when I ordered the book, is the print quality is awful. The printed text is blurred or smudged or missing in some places. Not sure I would order this again.

Editorial Review:

When Baby Steps was first published in 1993, it was named one of the 10 Best Parenting Books by Child magazine. Now, this popular guide to baby's first two years has been completely revised to incorporate the latest research on the young child's developing brain and behavior, including brand-new material on temperament, language, and memory. Baby Steps pinpoints the important events in an infant's life, examining them month by month for the first year, and in three-month intervals during the second year. Beginning with a 'miniguide' to early development, the book goes on to a cover such important subjects as sleep, crying, colic, motor development, social play, and toilet training. Developmental hints and alerts throughout the book provide parents with a clear understanding of the full range of 'normal' behaviors for each phase, helping to allay common anxieties. An accessible, concrete guide to infant and toddler behavior, Baby Steps takes much of the guesswork out of parenting.

A handy baby food companion 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I cannot say that this book contains enough nutritional info, or enough recipes to be stand on its own, i.e., I'm glad I bought other books to answer my questions on what to feed my baby.
However, it is a handy quick-guide for fruits and vegetables, and the freezer trays are a wonderful asset.
Pros: well-organized, easy to reference, talks about introducing spices (e.g., cinnamon, dill), offers ideas on combining foods.
Cons: All recipes are microwave-cooked covered with plastic wrap (stovetop method is explained in general in a previous chapter), the book is only about fruits and vegetables and does not talk about meat or other foods at all (these are only mentioned in the age-appropriateness charts but quantities and recipes are not included).
The book has a little space to personalize, to write dates of when you introduced foods and little notes about your baby. I personally have never used these.
Overall, not a bad purchase, but I have found much more complete info on wholesomebabyfood.com. See also my reviews of WHAT SHOULD I FEED MY BABY by Susannah Olivier and COMPLETE IDIOT'S GUIDE TO FEEDING YOUR BABY AND TODDLER by Elizabeth Ward.

Editorial Review:

If you're a parent, you may have already discovered the dearth of literature on a very important period in your child's life: ages two to five, known as the preschool years. The first book of its kind, The Preschool Years brings together in a single, superbly organized volume the advice of parents, and the latest thinking of experts, on one hundred issues that arise during this crucial time.

Ellen Galinsky and Judy David have collected an impressive wealth of knowledge from such experts as T. Berry Brazelton, Benjamin Spock, and Bruno Bettleheim, as well as insights from parents themselves, to present a range of practical solutions to everyday problems. Taking into account the very different needs of a wide range of families, The Preschool Years answers specific questions on such topics as:
-- Discipline
-- Expressing and Controlling Anger
-- Television
-- Making Good Family Rules
-- Shyness and Aggressiveness
-- Sharing
-- Moral Development
-- Friends
-- Real and Imaginary
-- Coping with Temperamental Dispositions
-- Eating and Mealtimes
-- Shopping with a Preschooler
-- Building Social Skills
-- Handling Fear
-- Choosing Child-Care Programs
-- Establishing Daily Routines
-- Encouraging Healthy Sex Roles
-- Handling Separation and Divorce
-- Holidays, Vacations, Moving
-- And much more

In its scope, depth, and comprehensiveness, The Preschool Years is a unique contribution to the field. Whether you are a parent, an educator, or a child-development expert, this is the book about preschool children that you should own.

Worth the Money 5 out of 5 stars.

These cards are great for learning basic signs with your kids. Older kids learn fast from the cards, and toddlers enjoy them too, but be sure to laminate them because they bend and tear easily in toddlers' hands. The pictures can also be used for communication before the signs are memorized because a child can point to what they want by finding the picture card.

Editorial Review:

Sign Babies Flash Cards introduce American Sign Language (ASL) signs for the words that babies and small children need most. Set 2: Around the House covers food and items around the house like bread, cereal, cheese, shoes, socks, telephone, and bike.

The eye-catching illustrations help young children to recognize common objects, actions, and emotions. Parents and educators can use the cards to facilitate learning signs that children can use to communicate before they can speak.

The flash cards can be presented individually to facilitate learning signs or in a 4 x 6 photo album to create a custom "book" that focuses on the words and concepts children are learning. The ASL sign and hint on the back side help adults remember the signs.
