A Fabulous Shower or New Baby Gift!! 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This book is wonderful for the new mother--whether pregnant or having recently given birth. It is consise and a quick read. It is so reassuring--written by a mother of 8, who is herself an R.N. and lactation consultant, married to a pediatrician. Martha Sears describes how her years as a nurse did little to prepare her for her "very own baby." Nothing but time spent with your own newborn will do that! But, the reassurance of a mother "who's been there" eight times over is a wonderful thing. Martha Sears gives new mothers the permission to follow their intuition and spend time loving their new babies. She gives them leave to ask for help with household tasks and spend a honeymoon with their newborns. She describes the myriad of emotions new mothers experience. She presents some cutting-edge research the supports what many mothers have known all along.

A fabulous book! I highly recommend it!

Editorial Review:

Becoming a new mother is a time of joy, hope, and sometimes a little uncertainty. In this timeless, warm, and heartfelt book, America's most trusted childcare experts help brand-new moms meet the challenges and changes of motherhood. Not a traditional baby-care book, this is about the process of becoming a mother and what that means. Above all, it encourages new mothers to trust their instincts and offers advice on how to bring out the best in their babies. and themselves. The irresistibly charming illustrations by renowned artist Coco Masuda add even more warmth and appeal to the Sears's comforting narrative.

Good book, but appears out dated.... 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I was very excited to receive this book, and started reading it immediately. It is a large hard-cover edition, certainly making it feel as though it has all the information you'll ever need. I'm sure this book has tons of good information, but when I got to the nutrition section, I knew that the food pyramid they showed was out of date. I hadn't checked the copyright when I ordered the book and was disappointed to see that it was published in 1994! 12 years old is pretty old when it comes to any medical/health information, and so I'm returning it for the more updated "Mayo Clinic Guide to a healthy Pregnancy". I would have liked the new version to also cover the first year of life like this book, but I need up-to-date information, or I won't trust it.

Editorial Review:

The 9 months preceding and the 12 months following child birth are exciting, trying, confusing times; they are the months of many questions. You wonder about your itchy palms, morning sickness, fetus development, home midwife or hospital doctor choices, what to eat, amniocentesis, miscarriages, labor painkillers, maintaining your physical and emotional health after childbirth, and, not least, how to care for your growing, developing baby. A live-in pediatrician would be nice; a 750-page comprehensive reference guide is the next best solution. It won't eliminate anxiety, but it's a reassuring presence, and a soothing source of answers and explanations.

not quite what i expected 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As I was looking for a one year calendar for my third child, I had pretty specific criteria. One such criteria was that there was space for a photo for each of the twelve months. The close-up of this calendar displayed what ended up being the LAST page- a large spae for a picture- which was not descriptive of each months page. I was a little disappointed when the calendar arrived and I realized the mistake. Just a word to the wise, for those who may be seeking the same features in a one-year calendar and may be mislead by this one.

I hate this thing 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

First let me say, it's a hassle because you have to write in the dates of every month because it is all blank. Some may say this is nice but I found it very difficult to keep up with. I need the simplicity of one already made up ready to write in. The stickers are a nice addition. The thing that was the most frustrating is that there isn't enough pages to have the final month in order to write their first birthday or anything. There are only tweleve pages. That was a little frustrating to me. If I could go back I would have just used a real calendar. It is much simpler. I will give it credit for being cute and a nice keepsake.

Editorial Review:

Charming illustrations and convenient design make it easy for parents to make a detailed keepsake of their baby's first year. With ample writing space and adorable stickers, parents can keep a month-by-month account of each and every important milestone and precious first experience they share with their new child.

Hard to get cubes of food out of the food tray... 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this set because it's one of the few BPA-free food storage trays out there (I also bought Baby Cubes which I found were much easier to use). The cubes of frozen baby food were very hard to pop out of the tray. I had to pound and pound the trays on the countertop and even still, I'd be lucky if I got one or two out. However, when they do pop out, it's very easy to put them in a freezer bag back in the freezer and then defrost the little food cubes when needed. I LOVE their little cheat-sheet on nutrition though; it was very useful and I have it up on my fridge. If I could go back in time, I would still get the set just for that sheet! So, if I could get the food out, I would probably rate this 5 stars instead of 3.

Life saver for new mums 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book was literally a life saver (mine!) As a new mum, every question or worry I had, but was too embarassed to ask, was answered in Robin's book. The easy index at the back made it such a handy reference. Filled with common sense answers and advice, it helped me be a more confident mum. A must have for new mothers!

Besy baby book, ever. 5 out of 5 stars.

New to babies? Afraid of babies? They are more durable than you think. This Aussie author knows of what she speaks. A 'baby nurse' and mother, pragmatic world traveler and military wife, Robyn Barker gives plain spoken advice to parents new, young or old.

Definitely the best baby book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book based on some of Robin Barker's mini-guides sent to me by my sister-in-law in Australia when I had my first child. They were so useful and down to earth that when I had my second child recently, I ordered this book, having ditched all my others in disgust! Apart from the excellent advice, the great thing about her is that she refuses to take a dogmatic stance (neither overly rigid or overly liberal) or judge parents for what they need to do to get by. At the same time, she offers practical advice and options for different approaches to try. She isn't mealy-mouthed and doesn't contradict herself or leave you with the impression you're going to unalterably hurt your child by taking a different path (unlike What to Expect). Having had a baby who cried a lot, she talks to you directly about this and helps you deal with the emotions well. Get this book - throw out the rest!!!

Editorial Review:

A leading social critic goes inside the billion-dollar baby business to expose the marketing and the myths, helping parents determine what’s worth their money—and what’s a waste

Parenting coaches, ergonomic strollers, music classes, sleep consultants, luxury diaper creams, a never-ending rotation of DVDs that will make a baby smarter, socially adept, and bilingual before age three. Time-strapped, anxious parents hoping to provide the best for their baby are the perfect mark for the “parenting” industry.

In Parenting, Inc., Pamela Paul investigates the whirligig of marketing hype, peer pressure, and easy consumerism that spins parents into purchasing overpriced products and raising overprotected, overstimulated, and over-provided-for children. Paul shows how the parenting industry has persuaded parents that they cannot trust their children’s health, happiness, and success to themselves. She offers a behind-the-scenes look at the baby business so that any parent can decode the claims—and discover shockingly unuseful products and surprisingly effective services. And she interviews educators, psychologists, and parents to reveal why the best thing for a baby is to break the cycle of self-recrimination and indulgence that feeds into overspending.

Paul’s book leads the way for every parent who wants to escape the spiral of fear, guilt, competition, and consumption that characterizes modern American parenthood.
