Editorial Review:

Jump-start language and learning skills with this simple and elegant guide to using sign language to communicate with your preverbal baby.

Imagine averting a tantrum because your baby was able to communicate her desire for a favorite toy without tears, or simply sharing in your baby's wonderment at the sight of a bird on a tree-before he has even uttered his first word! Generally, children do not develop the motor skills necessary to speak until they are two, and yet they are able to communicate using sign language as early as six months. Written by an experienced signer and a mother of three, this illustrated step-by-step guide will allow readers to join the ranks of parents around the world who experience the rich rewards of communicating with their preverbal babies by using sign language.

Studies have shown that babies who are taught to use signs to express themselves before they can actually speak are more contented because they can communicate their basic needs (and ideas!) and also are more skilled at speaking once they begin to acquire language. Full of practical tips, real anecdotes, and straightforward diagrams of more than sixty basic American Sign Language signs, Baby Talk is the essential baby-signing handbook for parents, relatives, and caregivers-and their babies, who are just a little too young to express themselves verbally.

Guess How Much I Love You 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I like the Baby's First Year calendar (Guess How Much I Love You)... probably because I LOVE the story itself. However I was disappointed that EACH MONTH did NOT have a SPOT for a PICTURE taken that month. I always give a 'first year calendar' for new babies or babies to be and overall, I would recommend this calendar.

Just what I was looking for- 4 out of 5 stars.

I had a great calendar for my son's first year but couldn't find one when my daughter was born this spring. I looked everywhere. Then I found this one. The images tell the entire story of "Guess How Much I Love You" and the colors are lovely. It's so pretty that I've hung it in Simone's nursery so I can access it daily. My only wish was that there were pockets on each page for little keepsakes. My son's calendar had that and it was great for tucking in things like "first baseball tickets" and the like until the one day make it into a scrapbook (maybe!) I would certainly buy this product again.

A lifesaver.... 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I'm not well schooled in herbs or home remedies, but this book was a tremendous help to me during my last two pregnancies. There are not just herbal concoctions, but simple, common-sense solutions for everything from pain to depression to lactation issues. When I was struggling with what might have been a premature birth, I consulted this book and was able to halt my contractions, and afterwards continued a healthy, full-term pregnancy. The knowledge you'll find in these pages is priceless.

Great book 5 out of 5 stars.

I work in a health food store and pregnant women, and women with small children ask me all the time about herbal advice for them- something impossible to find.(Usually at the advice of their doctor) I always remind them that I'm not a doctor and anything they do is at their own risk. That said, what I am is someone who researches herbs and vitamins constantly, and obsessively reads about the side effects and interactions of natural medicine. Because of this book's warnings about herbs, I have informed hundreds of pregnant women about herbs they should be careful with- saffron, parsley, etc. Susun Weed will recommend mild herbs scientifically known for their gentle effectiveness. Also, her advice tends to actually work and have the advantage of thousands of years of experience concerning side effects under its' belt.(And real science- real research done by doctors/scientists- search the herbs recommended in studies done by "The Lancet" for example) Do you want to take ginger tea for your nausea or a prescription?? Well, they're both potentially dangerous-not just the herb. And that's a fact-yeah, herbs can kill you-everyone knows this-and so can drugs-so people should educate themselves about the side effects of EVERYTHING they put into their bodies. When a doctor says a drug is "safe", they don't mean harmless, they mean that the good outweighs the bad or the drug is "relatively safe'. Eating licorice everyday is dangerous...saffron could kill you...

Editorial Review:

Americas favorite pediatric experts turn their attention to the hottest topic in parentingsolving babies sleep problemsin a definitive book that offers immediate results. For every parent whos ever been deprived of sleep by a restless infant or toddler, now theres hope. This much-needed addition to the Sears Parenting Library is the comprehensive, reassuring, solution-filled sleep resource that virtually every American family will want to own. Nighttime separation anxiety, new breastfeeding habits, and an increase in adult sleep problems have made babies sleep habits a growing concern in recent years. The Searses offer solutions. Instead of espousing the kind of one-method-fits-all approach advocated in other parenting books, the Searses teach parents how to match the nighttime temperament of their baby to their own lifestyle. The authors draw on important new infant sleep research from the Mother-Baby Sleep Laboratory at the University of Notre Dame, as well as on their own personal experience as parents of children with a wide range of sleep habits. They also offer a detailed critique of the myriad new devices and ballyhooed techniques that promise to deliver safer and better infant sleep. THE BABY SLEEP BOOK provides parents with the practical tools they need to help the entire family sleep better.

Editorial Review:

Book Description: Original, groundbreaking way of looking at the babyth and linking it to the difficult ¿clingy, cranky, cryingre they want to be close to their caregiver. This connection had never been understood or described until now. Usually, these difficult periods drive parents crazy and guilt-ridden. This book reassures parents that they are not to blame and that these difficult periods are part of normal development all babies go through. Knowing that their baby can so difficult at times, parents can tolerate their babybehavior much better. Based on extensive scientific research, The Wonder Weeks describes in easy-to-understand terms the incredible developmental changes that all babies go through during the first 60 weeks of their lives. Now this book, which has sold more than 1 million copies throughout the world in 12 languages, can help parents predict -within a week or two- when to expect the behavior that marks a new change. They will learn what is going on in the baby's brain and read examples of how other parents react at this stage and what they can do to help the child during this transition. It includes: -Week-by-week guide to baby's behavior -An explanation of the markers for cranky, clingy, crying (The three C¿s) behavior and how to react -Fun games and gentle activities you can do with your child -A description of your baby's perspective on the world around him and how it can help you understand the changes he's going through Research background: The authors studied chimpanzees in Africa with Jane Goodall and found evidence for distinct ¿regression periods¿ where infant behavior changes dramatically. This confirmed research that others had found previously in 12 more primate species. They returned to Europe to see if these regression periods could be established in human infants. There, they started to interview and observe mothers and their newborn babies in their homes weekly during the first 20 months of life. They found and reported on 10 regression periods. The first study was based on 15 families. Later these findings were confirmed in 32 more families in the Netherlands, 20 families in Spain, 17 families in Sweden and 30 families in England. The findings were reported in scientific journals and presented in this general book for parents. Reviews: "This is a very practical and entertaining window into the baby's first year and a half. Vanderijt and Plooij have observed and found the vulnerable times in an infant's development that I independently came to in my book Touchpoints (Perseus). The authors' observations and practical suggestions are wonderful." -T. Berry Brazelton, M.D., professor emeritus, Harvard Medical School. d Plooijfant development has enormous value for clinical use and scientific application. Not only have they explained the periods of puzzling, difficult behavior in infancy which so worry parents, they have also shown how these behaviors mark developmental leaps and have described the stages in the infanting. Together, this gives parents and professionals soundly based insight into babies¿ developing minds. Whaterijt and Plooij have described the play and communication that work best with babies at different ages and thus helped parents understand and connect sensitively with their babies. This parent-child connection is the major prerequisite for the development of secure, well-adjusted children. The Wonder Weeks is essential reading for everyone who works with infants ns, social workers, psychologists, and, of course, parents.¿ -John Richer, Ph.D., Dip. Clin. Psychol., consultant clinical psychologist and Head of Pediatric Psychology, Department of Pediatrics, John Radcliffe Hospital, Oxford, England.

Editorial Review:

How we raise our children differs greatly from society to society, with many cultures responding differently to such questions as how a parent should respond to a crying child, how often a baby should be nursed, and at what age a child should learn to sleep alone. Ethnopediatrics--the study of parents, children, and child rearing across cultures--is the subject of anthropologist Meredith F. Small's thorough and fascinating book Our Babies, Ourselves.

Small asserts that our ideas about how to raise our kids are as much a result of our culture as our biology, and that, in fact, many of the values we place on child-rearing practices are based in culture rather than biology. Small writes, "Every act by parents, every goal that molds that act, has a foundation in what is appropriate for that particular culture. In this sense, no parenting style is 'right' and no style is 'wrong.' It is appropriate or inappropriate only according to the culture." Our Babies, Ourselves is a wonderful read for anyone interested in the social sciences, and will be especially meaningful to those swept up in the wild adventure of parenting. --Ericka Lutz

Not sure if this book saved me or my two year old!! hahaha. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

It was overnight that I swore a body snatcher had taken over my very well behaved 2 year old! This book saved either me or my two year old, I'm not sure. I truly was pulling my hair out and didn't know what to do. This book doesn't just tell you what you should do, and then when the time comes you want to do it, but aren't quite sure how to get from point A to C.

This book breaks it down step by step. Example, a two year old and younger will not stay in time out. I would be fighting to hold my son down. The book suggests that when you go to put the child in time out the minute you step back you tell them "they can get up now". Now they're not getting up because they want to, but because you gave them permission. Boom, you just took back the "power"! Then the author takes it from that step to the next and on until where your 2 year old will do a timeout just because you tell them to, without a fight! This book gives you real life examples, and takes you step by step! It really was amazing how after reading this book I felt that I was in control and could handle it. When I had confidence, my child responded and he became well behaved again! No screaming, no fighting. When the parent is in calm control, the situation stays in calm control, and the child feels safe and responds.

This book is great for a parent of an 18 month old on up. The author gives real life situations and step-by-step for older children as well.
There is an abundance of information in this book, you don't have to agree with everything in it, but no matter what style parenting you use, I think anyone will be able to use the majority of what this book has to offer. I find myself referring back to it at different stages of my children's life!

Editorial Review:

Imagine infants free from painful diaper rash, new parenthood without thousands of dollars wasted in diapering costs, toilet training that is natural and noncoercive, and, most important, happier babies and parents

As Christine Gross-Loh reveals in her progressive, enlightening book, all this is possible and more. Infants are born with the ability to communicate their need to "go," just as they communicate hunger or sleepiness. Gross-Loh, a mother of two children who were diaper-free at eighteen and fifteen months, uses the tenets of "elimination communication," or EC, to teach parents how to identify and respond to their baby or toddler's natural cues.

Unlike the all-or-nothing approach of some parenting books, The Diaper-Free Baby addresses three categories of parents: full-time, part-time, and occasional EC'ers. Parents can practice EC as much or as little as fits their family and lifestyle. A support group within a book, The Diaper-Free Baby also includes inspiring testimonials throughout every chapter. Parents who have successfully practiced EC identify common struggles, share experiences and problem-solving tips, and provide encouragement for those new to the technique. Their motivational stories together with Gross-Loh's practical advice will appeal to all parents interested in a fresh alternative to traditional toilet training.

This book is great for teaching your child sign language. The beginning of the book goes through the benefits of teaching sign language to children before learning to talk, then takes you through how and when you should start. It was very informative on the subject. The end of the book goes through the different signs, showing the main signs like eat, bottle, drink, mommy, daddy, etc., but it also includes fun signs like rabbit, frog, and elephant. If you want to continue reading, I'll just list all of the signs included:
