Potty Training That's Better for Babies, Parents and the Environment

Up until the 1960s, 95 percent of all children were potty trained by the age of 18 months. Today, this figure has risen to 46 months. The problem with later potty training is that it's more difficult for parents, creates emotional and health problems for children and contributes billions of pounds of unnecessary diapers to our landfills. By bringing the power of the Baby Signs Program to potty training, babies can start toilet training as early as 12 months.

The Baby Signs Potty Training Kit has been field tested by parents with children from 9 months to 4 years old across the country with great success. Jennifer Macris, a mother of a 5 says "I potty trained my four older children before using this program with my youngest son, and I can definitely say that this is the most fun and effective program out there. It works."

About the Baby Signs Program

The Baby Signs Program is the world's leading sign language program for hearing babies. Built upon two decades of research conducted by Dr. Linda Acredolo and Dr. Susan Goodwyn, much of it funded by the National Institutes of Health, the program helps babies use simple signs to communicate before they can talk, thereby decreasing frustration, enriching the parent-child bond, fostering both emotional and intellectual development-and helping babies talk sooner.

fantastic book covering everything you need to know! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book covers all the topics related to infant potty training, and gives information for every and anything you would come across, by far my favorite book on the method!

I first read this book when I was pregnant, and it was this book that made me decide to give it a try. I'd never seen or knew anyone who practiced this, but this book gave me the resources I needed to feel confident enough to try it! It covers how to hold the baby in many positions - and with pictures which I found essential! It went over signals and cues with great detail, including the different stages babies go through and how those signals and patterns change. Knowing what to expect really helped me make it through all the different stages my baby went through. It really is all about communicating with the baby, and what a fantastic journey this has been for our family.

This book aslo has testimonials and stories from around the world and in the US, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Every child is different, even in the same family, and its great to see the many ways this method can be adapted for each child! It can be done with or without diapers, part-time or full-time, with support from your family or without. Just having the option to respond to this need, and teach a baby that a diaper isn't the only place to go has been a very positive part of bonding with my baby.

Thank you Laurie for writing such a comprehensive book for people who have never heard of the method to learn all they can! The DVD Potty Whispering is also a fantastic additional resource, I highly recommend it as well as this great book!

The book contains guidelines all ages (newborn, early-starters & late-starters); 100+ baby signals; 35+ tips for late-starters; tips for working with twins and other multiples; part-time pottying; sign language; commentary by pediatricians, MDs and psychologists; anthropological reports; testimonials; myths; and cross-cultural research on the practice which is also known as elimination communication.

The time-tested, gentle, and successful method that introduces children to potty training as early as six months

While parents around the world successfully potty train their children well before preschool age, in the United States, we've moved away from this early introduction. However, there's no evidence that later is better--in fact, there's even significant reason to believe that later can be detrimental.

Written by a respected child psychologist, Early-Start Potty Training shows why the early-start method is preferable to the commonly used readiness method. Waiting until children show signs of readiness can hold them back from preschool, cost a fortune in diapers, and lead to health problems. The early-start method avoids these concerns by starting the process of training as early as six months old.

This easy-to-follow program provides you with:

  • Time-tested training tips for introducing toddlers--and even infants--to the potty
  • Methods for combating common problems of training delay
  • A troubleshooting plan for moving toddlers from diapers to potty independence
  • Hints on how to overcome accidents and build confidence in children

Editorial Review:

Do the math: If a mother averages six diaper changes a day, she'll change 2,190 diapers during her baby's first year. Things improve slightly over the next twelve months. Based on five changes a day, she'll add another 1,825 diaper changes to her score. By the time her child is half- way to her third birthday, Mom will pass the 5,000 mark. That's a lot of dirty diapers! If this mom is you, it's no wonder you might be thinking seriously about potty training. While successful potty training in itself isn't considered a developmental milestone in a child's life, it is nonetheless an important transition for both you and your child. The good news is that potty training doesn't have to be complicated and neither does a book that explains it. Busy moms need a resource that gives them comprehensive information without a lot of unnecessary details and presents them with options instead of a one-size-fits-all program. Potty Training 1-2-3 provides all of that and more. The more is in the results.

As Debbie says in her preface, if you are a therapist who works with teenagers you are bound to work with adopted teens. Debbie offers sound advice for therapists and parents alike in navigating the sometimes turbulent waters of adopted teenagers.
As a therapist, parent of two teens, and author of "Survival Meditations for Parents of Teens," I heartily recommend Ms. Riley's book. My novel, RETURNABLE GIRL, addresses similar themes through fiction: a great parent/child read for discussions about these issues. Visit me at my website!

Parents will discover: •the six most common adoption stuck-spots •the complexities of adoption •the adopted teen’s quest for identity •how therapy may help the adoptive families learn and grow together. This really, really works!! 5 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

My son who is almost 7 has always wet the bed. It was a non-issue in our house as we knew he couldn't help it. He wore Pull-ups nightly. But about a month ago, he came to me expressing his desire to stop. I researched the various methods which can help children become dry. I was intriqued by the reviews for this book that I read on here, so we decided to buy it. We also bought a Wet-Stop bedwetting alarm. My son loves this book and we happily reviewed it every day. Within days of using the alarm and this book, he started having a few dry nights. This is a child that had only one or two dry nights a YEAR before we started this. It is now almost a month since we started this program and he has had 14 totally dry nights in a row!! We are ready to stop the use of the alarm tonight and he is so, so excited and proud! We will look at his book together until he decides to stop (he likes it so much, I'm not sure when that will be!) Of course, since we used the two methods, it's not totally possible to say how this book would have worked for us by itself, but I have an inkling that the book helped the most. It is also very good for a child's self-esteem. We are so very happy with this wonderful book and want to thank the author, too! Because of a family history of bedwetting, we assumed that my son would probably go on bedwetting for years. What a wonderful surprise for us and especially for him. This book has helped turn this whole thing into a positive experience for my little boy. He feels confident and now feels that he has control over this part of his life.

Editorial Review:

Now available in paperback, Dry All Night uses the successful picture book technique that has made Alison Mack's Toilet Learning a classic for parents and children worldwide to provide a safe and proven approach to the problem of bedwetting. 51 color and 13 black-and-white illustrations.

An introduction to "Traditional" Potty Training 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have read several books about early toilet learning, and I have to say that this was definitely not my favorite. The author does give a lot of evidence that supports early potty training, but does not give a lot of practical advice for implementation.

I would give Chapter 2 a 5 star rating, and without this chapter the whole book probably would have gotten only 1-2 stars from me. In Chapter 2, she gives a really great, detailed history of how traditional potty training progressed to "readiness training" in the US, and how nobody has ever given sufficient evidence that there are any benefits to waiting until the child shows interest in learning to use the toilet. This section is a great resource for anyone who is scared that by exposing a child to the potty early you are psychologically damaging him or her.

I liked that the author recommended taking the leap to underwear fairly early. I think that this is important and it is a hard step for parents to take because it can be messy, but it really is the best way to help your child to be more aware of his or her body, and super-absorbent disposable diapers just don't do that.

The advice that the author gives regarding the potty training process implies that there is only one way to do it - starting at 6-12 mos, which actually is actually LATE when you compare cross-culturally. There are positions that you can use to hold a tiny infant to help cue them before they are able to sit unsupported. Some people believe that babies lose some of their awareness of their elimination by 6 mos. If you plan to use this method and you have a child on the way or who is younger than 6 months, I highly recommend that you read Ingrid Bauer's Diaper Free! The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene and any of Laurie Boucke's books, such as Infant Potty Training: A Gentle and Primeval Method Adapted to Modern Living, and Christine Gross Loh's book The Diaper-Free Baby: The Natural Toilet Training Alternative. These books also contain some useful information about how to start this process for younger and older children and are more flexible in terms of when to start and how.

Something that I found disturbing, yet fascinating, about this book is that it is written from a perspective that overlooks and/or dismisses other parenting practices that seem to go naturally with this process: She gives a "lecture" that there are certain inconveniences that a parent should be willing to do for the well-being of their child, yet (1) she spends several pages in the book discussing details of bottle feeding and barely glosses over breastfeeding which is so much healthier for babies in so many ways including digestive system health. Although she does not discuss her personal reasons for not breastfeeding, it was apparent to me that she did not really think that it was important and I am frustrated to see that attitude from a pediatrician who is advising parents of young children. (2) She discourages cloth diapering because she finds that inconvenient. As a mother who has used cloth diapers AND early potty awareness with my child, I found this quite ridiculous. It is SO much more effort to take a child to the potty several times a day than to wash cloth diapers every couple of days (UNLESS you don't have a washing machine or you have a shortage of water), plus, if your child is using the toilet successfully you will have much less diaper laundry. I guess we all have our priorities, but I found this contradictory.

One small pet peeve of mine is that, in the section where she talks about nutrition, constipation, and avoiding juices, she reiterates the old "8 glasses of water a day" myth, which is just not true (how could children and adults of all different sizes have exactly the same requirement, anyways?). In fact, we get most of our water from the food that we eat and only need to drink water when we are thirsty. For more information, do a search at Snopes or type in "8 glasses water" on your favorite search engine.

There were definitely some interesting things in this book other than what I have listed, but overall I think that most of the useful information can be found elsewhere. This book is not one that I would recommend to people who are considering early potty training.

What a useless book! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

After seeing 50+ RAVE reviews for this book on Amazon, I went ahead and ordered it, feeling very pleased with myself. Now that I've spent the money and read it, I am SO disappointed! There are lots of anecdotes in the book, but almost ZERO practical tips. Where is the method? The technique? I know I have to wait until my child is ready . . . but THEN WHAT?!?!

Save your money on this one.

A practical & excellent potty-training resource 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best potty-training resources out there, and I have read many! I have a two-and-a-half year old daughter who I have been trying to potty-train since 2 yrs, and it has been tough going, until recently. I found this book in my local library and it has been well worth my reading time.

It is written in an easy to read manner, there are plenty of real-life experiences that readers can relate to, and covers the essentials of potty training - how to gauge whether your child is ready, comparison between past practices and present, beginning training, what steps can be taken if the going gets difficult or doesn't take off as expected, overcoming power struggles, night training, bed wetting, and other tips that help parents in making the potty training experience more tolerable, and even a great learning experience. Highly recommended!

Not Useful for Special Needs Kids 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I have a 4-3/4 yr old autistic child and have tried EVERYTHING for potty training. I finally did an Amazon search on potty training special needs children and this is one of the few books that popped up. I read through the entire 147 pages in a couple nights desperately searching for some "new" approach to reaching an autistic child. Although the author touches on the things that might make it more difficult to potty train an autistic child, she offered no new approach (in my mind) to helping me. Her constant suggestions of the reward system, which is what EVERYBODY recommends, is not new and does nothing to motivate my autistic child. I imagine this book might be useful for someone with a 2 yr old "typical" child who is just starting the potty training process. I would suggest that parents of autistic children, especially older ones where you've already tried all the "experts" methods, pass on this book. No help at all and certainly not worth the price.

Editorial Review:

Toilet training children with autism and related disorders is fraught with countless challenges stemming from the very core of their unique characteristics. The communication and sensory issues alone can create formidable barriers. As a result, typical strategies are frequently ineffective when used with children with special needs. Using a no-nonsense, often humorous approach, Judith Coucouvanis, MA, APRN, BC, shares strategies that have produced remarkable results for parents of children with autism and related disorders nationwide. Promising no "quick fixes," The Potty Journey systematically guides you through the entire toileting journey, step-by-step, to the ultimate destination - dry pants.

Editorial Review:

Parents will welcome Brazelton's uniquely empathetic, wise, and helpful approach to this inevitable and often trying issue. Toilet training is a job for the child and not the parent, and by trying to force the issue or even encourage too hard, parents can set the stage for trouble. By "listening to the child," parents will know when their child is ready, and by guiding children in a series of gentle small steps, parents can help them make the accomplishment their own. A generation and more of children have been trained "the Brazelton way," and now he and Dr. Sparrow have distilled this advice into one priceless little guide. They first lay out the Touchpoints approach to the issue (a "mistake" can mean the child is making progress on some other front), then discuss the timing of this big achievement, and finally deal with how to respond if problems occur. For parents who want to get past this issue cheerfully, with the least fuss and turmoil, this is the one and only book to get.
