Required reading for parents 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

This book and its successor, Raising a Thinking Preteen, are going to be required reading for prospective parents when I am king of the world. There are so many cliche phrases that we learn from our parents, TV, etc. that are very destructive, and certainly not constructive, and this book teaches parents how to talk to their children to foster many positive traits, including the "hungry mind" attitude.

The best book I've read teaching parenting skills 5 out of 5 stars.

I echo what's been written about this book. I kept checking it out of the library over and over until I finally decided just to buy it. My 3 year old has been figuring out a DIFFERENT way to solve problems since we started ICPSing. Beginning with word concepts that can be started at a very early age (same/different, is/is not, good idea/not a good idea) then moving into more complex problem solving is a great approach. This book gives parents, or anyone working with children solid approaches on how to teach problem solving. I highly recommend this book.

Editorial Review:

Stressing the importance of developing thinking skills in growing children, a parent's guide introduces the I Can Problem Solve program and explains the difference between teaching children what to think and how to think. Reprint.

fantastic book covering everything you need to know! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

This book covers all the topics related to infant potty training, and gives information for every and anything you would come across, by far my favorite book on the method!

I first read this book when I was pregnant, and it was this book that made me decide to give it a try. I'd never seen or knew anyone who practiced this, but this book gave me the resources I needed to feel confident enough to try it! It covers how to hold the baby in many positions - and with pictures which I found essential! It went over signals and cues with great detail, including the different stages babies go through and how those signals and patterns change. Knowing what to expect really helped me make it through all the different stages my baby went through. It really is all about communicating with the baby, and what a fantastic journey this has been for our family.

This book aslo has testimonials and stories from around the world and in the US, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. Every child is different, even in the same family, and its great to see the many ways this method can be adapted for each child! It can be done with or without diapers, part-time or full-time, with support from your family or without. Just having the option to respond to this need, and teach a baby that a diaper isn't the only place to go has been a very positive part of bonding with my baby.

Thank you Laurie for writing such a comprehensive book for people who have never heard of the method to learn all they can! The DVD Potty Whispering is also a fantastic additional resource, I highly recommend it as well as this great book!

Editorial Review:

This book is a welcome addition to the child-rearing literature, expanding the range of possibilities for the modern mother and family. It is a practical, user-friendly guide to "nurturant potty training" and provides a global perspective on this important developmental milestone.

A very passive approach... 2 out of 5 stars.
7 of 17 people found this review helpful.

I was looking for a book about discipline that helps increase self-confidence rather than undermine it. I picked up this book, which turned out to be not at all practical for parenting my high-spirited and generally well-behaved daughter. The suggested responses to situations are very passive and assume the child gives up very easily. Samalin suggests replacing obviously abusive language ("Pick up that coat this minute! Why are you so sloppy? Didn't you ever hear of a coat hanger?") with oddly passive-aggressive language ("Coats belong in the closet, not on the floor.") (p. 16). Other conversatons in the book presume that as soon as a child's feelings are acknowledged, all battles will be over. But in my experience, pretending behavior problems don't exist doesn't make them go away, so I found this book to be impractical. If you want to take a direct rather than passive approach to parenting your kids, this is not the book for you.

Editorial Review:

In this now-classic, straightforward approach to childraising, Nancy Samalin shows parents how to set clear, concise guidelines to ensure positive and constructive discipline. Based on her extensive work with parents and children, she offers the most recent and invaluable advice on: -- Avoiding daily battles -- Using alternatives to punishment -- Dealing with anger -- Learning to let go -- Diminishing sibling rivalries and much, much more. Filled with practical solutions to everyday problems and thoughtful, useful information on opening up communication between the generations, Loving Your Child Is Not Enough will help parents to truly enjoy their child's growing years.

Editorial Review:

In just thirty days, you can get children to behave the way you want them to. Whether their misbehavior is as minor as letting the dishes pile up and the trash overflow or as traumatic as a drug habit and stealing, Back in Control will enable you to set and enforce rules that your kids will obey.

Back in Control is based on a highly successful program that has helped thousands of parents regain control over their children. Without compromising your values away or kicking the kids out of the house, it offers you the simplest, most effective method of childhood discipline to date. It presents a three-step formula that is perfect for virtually any adult wanting to control children's misbehavior.

Instead of getting caught up in children's arguments and manipulations, Back in Control shows parents how to reestablish their rightful place as bosses of the family. Teachers are able to devote more time to teaching than to disciplining students. Probation officers and social workers working with parents, in addition to managing their caseloads more effectively, are able to permanently stop children from abusing drugs or alcohol, stealing, running away from home, and being truant. Children themselves learn that there are some rules they must obey, whether they want to or not, and they will grow up believing that they can succeed in doing what is required of them.

Power belongs to those who use it. And if you don't, your children will. If your children's problem behavior is out of hand, it's time you got Back in Control.

How to Keep Your Sanity During an Especially Tough Situation 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

Our son was born at 26 weeks (3 months early) and was in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) until one day past his due date. We were given this book after he'd been there one month. Let me tell you what a life-saver it was! We had been given a "crash course" in the care delivered to a premature infant... very scary stuff. Wires, machines, noise, drugs -- and in the middle of it all this unbelievably tiny human being who is your child. This book took much of the fear away and instead educated us. Preemies don't stop being preemies when they come home! This book gives the technical data in an easy to understand format that is not condescending and also focuses on the emotional as well as physical needs of the baby. Additionally, it gives contacts and information on potential problems, how to spot them early, and how to handle them. There is also a good referal list in the back. I would recommend this book not only to preemie parents, but to anyone in contact with a preemie and their family. PS. As of this writing, our son is one year old and doing great!
