Challenges your thinking 5 out of 5 stars.

Interesting a reviewer said Baucham teaches "Beating kids=good! Evolution=Bad!" ...it tells you right there that reviewer has succumbed to the culture that Baucham ironically warns people against (the culture says spanking=beating kids and macroevolution=fact). For everyone else, this book shows Christians how our practices have been influenced by the culture (rather than the other way around) and how those practices are unbiblical. I myself have been sounding that call as well, but Baucham sheds light on some additional issues that I hadn't considered. It is eye-opening and revolutionary.

By the way, a couple reviewers expressed their concerns about Vision Forum Ministries...but what about their philosophy is unbiblical? If everything should be scrutinized by the light of His Word, then make sure your criticism of Vision Forum is based on Scripture and not just "It makes me uncomfortable." When Jesus preached, most of what He said made people uncomfortable. "Lack of comfort" is not a sufficient excuse to criticize a ministry or philosophy unless you can also back up your criticism with Scripture (taken in context, of course).

Editorial Review:

This bold book is an urgent call to parents--and the church--to return to biblical discipleship in and through the home.

good little home companion 5 out of 5 stars.

This is no literary great, but a short and sweet little guide about montessori in the home. The photos are exquisite, a real joy in themselves. The ideas and activities in the book are more contemporary than some of the other montessori the in the home books around as well.

A good introduction - Practical tips to apply Montessori at home 4 out of 5 stars.

My daughter goes to a Montessori daycare. Before signing her up, I had reviewed online information. This book does not really give you more than what you can find online on the method itself, and does not touch on the critism made to the Montessori method.
However, it is a very pleasant book and good introduction. It gives very practical advise to apply Montessori to your home.

How To Raise An Amazing Child the Montessori Way 5 out of 5 stars.

I recommend this book to parents interested in a Montessori education for their children. It gives a very clear understanding of what Montessori is about.

Editorial Review:

Adapted for easy use with children at home and based on the key ideas that create confident, independent children in Montessori schools, this inspiring book shows parents how to deal with children's physical and intellectual growth from birth to six years.

Great theory, tougher practice 3 out of 5 stars.
24 of 32 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book so I could have more fun with my daughter, about a year and a half at the time of this review, and teach her a thing or two about creativity along the way. When I first got the book and read it, I LOVED it. There were tons of homemade recipes for saving money, ideas seemed relatively simple, yet fun, directions thorough... However, when I started implementing the ideas with my toddler, I slowly changed my mind.
I see a number of problems with this book:
Homemade recipes sound wonderful. You save money, you use ingredients you already have in your pantry, and you feel like such a handy supermom, what's not to love, right? Well, wrong...
First, the recipes often call for things I definitely don't have in my pantry, I was not even sure what some things were. For instance, cream of tartar. I wrote down a list of things I needed for a project and asked 3 employees at the store for it and all of them pointed me to tartar sauce. So, I had to go home empty-handed and do research online to find out what it was and why I needed it and where I could buy it, what I can substitute it for, etc. Most of the sources online seemed to indicate that it is something that used to be big in baking, but hardly ever needed now that we have baking powder. It'd be nice if the author provided some substitutions. I ended up using baking powder and it seemed to work alright. I later accidentally found cream of tartar in the spices section of my grocery store - and I looked in baking to no avail.
Another things is that a lot of recipes (80%, I'd say) call for tempera paint... If I'm going to buy paint, why buy tempera paint and mix it with stuff to make finger paints, might just as well buy finger paints - will probably end up cheaper. Same goes for, for example, a home-made blackboard. You need to buy the tape that has that chalkboard surface or chalkboard spray paint. Well, both are rather pricey, so it is almost as cheap to buy a ready-made chalkboard easel (not to mention much less trouble). Also, some recipes call for things like "an old grater you no longer use" (because you're going to be grating a bar of soap, for example) or "a big appliance box". I don't know if it's just me, but I think my Mom still uses the same grater she had when I was a year and a half and I don't buy big-screen TVs on a monthly basis... So, I don't really have all these lying around the house, nor is it always easy/cheap to find/buy one just when you want to try a project - often it really is easier and maybe even cheaper to just buy whatever it is you were going to make (case in point - beads).
Also, many recipes call for huge amounts of flour, salt, cornstarch, and food coloring. While those aren't that expensive in and of themselves (and food coloring CAN be), they add up! 4 cups of flour here, 4 cups of flour there, with a lot of these recipes not having the same shelf life as the store-bought equivalents. So, once again, the savings are questionable, even if we don't factor in the time we have to spend preparing stuff versus buying it ready-made.
The quality of projects.
My daughter is a pretty determined and focused toddler when she wants to be, but a lot of those projects are too contemplative to really keep her attention for more than 10 seconds. For instance, exploring the sounds and textures of a piece of foil or the much-favored by many feeley goop. My daughter was done exploring the sounds and textures of foil in 5 seconds and she did not want to explore the feeley goop at all after the initial try, so how was I supposed to make her realize that it has some unique qualities? The same goes for quite a number of projects that are meant to just "explore", but I realize that it is highly individual and there might be children out there who love those projects, just be aware that it is not automatic. Perhaps some of these activities would work well in a group, where children can feed off of each other's ideas and where interaction is already exciting enough, but for one child they can be a tad on a boring side and are over too quickly to be called an "activity".
Another thing in the projects I often have issues with is their messiness. The author does do a good job of outlining how to prep the working space, but with some projects, the colors will get splashed all over the place - it's toddlers we're talking about! I can cover a relatively large portion of the floor and the whole table, but I can't cover the walls and the ceiling... Not to mention that toddlers are known to run away in the middle of a project. So, unless you have a whole room you don't mind getting dirty and where you can contain your child (porch, sunroom, child-proof play room?), some of those projects will be just too much of a risky business to attempt in a nicer room. We live in a fully-carpeted apartment, and there is no way I'll be able to clean it up nicely if my child decides to have too much fun with one of the messier projects.
Finally, I find some "cooking" directions a little too sketchy. I have never made this thing before, I don't know what it should look and feel like, I actually ruined a couple of projects because I did something too soon or too late, even though I thought I was following the instructions religiously - there went 4 cups of flour and 2 cups of salt :-). Just so you don't think I'm a complete idiot, I do bake regularly and cook quite a bit too, and while sometimes my pizza dough made from scratch does turn out a little drier than I like, it is always edible, never a complete failure.
Overall, I'd say it's a good book with good ideas. If I were a kindergarten teacher, or had 2 or more kids of different ages, I'd probably rate this book better. But as a parent of only 1 child, I'd probably ever use only 1/3 of all the ideas of the book, with 2/3 being eliminated for one or several of the reasons mentioned above, which I find rather disappointing, since I am not paying only for the ideas I'm using...
Our favorite project so far? The bread. It did not taste spectacular (although was edible), but my daughter loved messing with the flour, watching it turn to dough, playing with the dough, etc.

THE Pregnancy book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

After starting "what to expect" and being told that it was horrible I was given this book by my midwives. It is THE book every pregnant woman should read. It does cover pregancy but not all the scare tactics that you read in the other books that make you paranoid about breathing. I found it very helpful in creating a birthing plan and knowing all the options I had. I didn't have the pregnancy I thought I would have as my sons were born prematurely and didn't survive, when it happened I knew exactly what was going on. On the other hand in "what to expect" the chart that says abdominal discomfort, you may have gas or you may be going into pre-term labor. Give me a break! So again...pregnant, thinking of being pregnant, know someone who is pregnant, this is the book!

Editorial Review:

If you only buy one childbirth book, this is the one...

The most complete. It covers all aspects of childbearing from conception through early infancy. It includes information on what to expect during pregnancy and birth and how you can work with your caregivers to make childbirth a happy and healthy experience.

The easiest to use. It is well organized for easy reading and quick reference. There are more than 45 charts and 150 photographs and illustrations to clarify the information -- more graphic aids than any other childbirth book.

The most up-to-date. It includes the latest information on clinical tests and procedures in pregnancy, childbirth, and early infancy. It also covers concerns regarding the emotional aspects of childbearing, the partner's role, comfort measures, high-risk pregnancies, medications, vaginal birth after cesarean, breastfeeding, and understanding infant behavior.

My daughter is now 20 years old. I read this book while pregnant and found it very helpful. My refused immunizations, the eye drops, the Vit K shot and the anal temperatures. When she was teething I rubbed whiskey on her gums. When she got pneumonia I gave her carrot juice instead of antibiotics. She never got baby food out of a jar - I made it myself from organic fruits and veggies. When I was done breast feeding she got soy milk - no powdered formulas.
Today her immune system is so strong she rarely gets sick and when she does she is over it quickly. She had a very mild case of chicken pox when she was around 8 years old - nothing that required even a doctors visit - it was like she had a cold.
I am writing this review now because a friend of mind is pregnant and when I told her I chose not to get my child vaccinated she thought I was a lunatic. Then she did the research and she has decided that maybe I was right. I was so happy to hear of her decision that I had to look up this book and reccommend it to her. I wish everyone who is going to have a baby would just consider that possibility that their pediatrician may not be right about certain things and take the time to find out for themselves!

Whiny and Negative 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This book is about an extremely emotionally ill women, who has spent her entire life avoiding reality with coke, meth, and alcohol, who now sober at 35 gets knocked up by one of the random men she is sleeping with. (She apparently is too hippie for condoms.)
Maybe it's because I don't have kids, but I find a mother doing nothing but go on and on and on about her kids every movement very monotonous and boring. Not only is that what she writes about in this book, but she is extremely negative, cynical and it's annoying.

Editorial Review:

It’s not like she’s the only woman to ever have a baby. At thirty-five. On her own. But Anne Lamott makes it all fresh in her now-classic account of how she and her son and numerous friends and neighbors and some strangers survived and thrived in that all important first year. From finding out that her baby is a boy (and getting used to the idea) to finding out that her best friend and greatest supporter Pam will die of cancer (and not getting used to that idea), with a generous amount of wit and faith (but very little piousness), Lamott narrates the great and small events that make up a woman’s life.

Editorial Review:

"This book provides a remarkably simple, intuitively pleasing, yet fascinating way to enhance communication, social interaction, and the sharing of inner worlds between parents and infants before they can talk." -- Daniel N. Stern, MD Author of Diary of a Baby "This delightfully written book provides parents and caregivers alike a step-by-step approach to encouraging the use of Baby Signs for objects, events, and needs. Opening up this nonverbal channel for communication helps both adult and child through that difficult stage when the desire to communicate outstrips the baby's capacity to say words." -- Susan Crockenberg, PhD Professor of Psychology, University of Vermont Have you ever noticed how easily babies learn to wave "bye-bye," or shake their heads for "no," and not for "yes"? These nonverbal gestures, or Baby Signs, enable them to communicate quite effectively before they are actually able to say the words. Unfortunately most parents stop right there, never realizing their baby's potential for learning other gestures--gestures that make it possible for parents to interact with their child in ways that would otherwise have been impossible until their baby could talk. Linda Acredolo and Susan Goodwyn have spent more than a decade researching and studying the effects of Baby Signs on infant communication, and the results have been overwhelmingly positive. Not only do parents gain a much greater understanding of their children and their needs, but babies also develop skills that actually enrich their comprehension of language. In Baby Signs: How to Talk with Your Baby Before Your Baby Can Talk, Acredolo and Goodwyn provide parents with a fun and simple step-by-step program for teaching children Baby Signs at home. This one-of-a-kind book includes easy-to-follow illustrated signs and photos, popular nursery rhymes with signs, parents' questions answered, and Baby Sign stories. Baby Signs allows infants to reach out to others and forge bonds of affection and satisfaction that will last a lifetime. Linda Acredolo, PhD, is a Professor of Psychology at the University of California at Davis, and Susan Goodwyn, PhD, is an Associate Professor of Psychology at California State University, Stanislaus. They have been teaching Baby Signs to parents, teachers, and pediatricians for the past 10 years.

Disappointing 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 5 people found this review helpful.

After reading the other reviews of this book, and another by the same authors (The Pregnancy Book), I purchased both, and am dissatisfied with both. Both books are written at about the 8th grade level, and The Birth Book is definitely written with a solid bias towards one school of birthing techniques.

There's an entire section on "interviewing OBs and deciding which hospital to have your child." For those of us with insurance plans, and a hospital five minutes away, the browbeating about how you're irresponsible and don't care enough if you don't give your OB the fifth degree before allowing him or her to do his or her job, this can be a bit off-putting.

Additionally, the focus on having a "birth plan" and "envisoning your perfect day" comes off sounding a good deal more like planning a wedding than having a baby.

While the book does a good job of presenting a variety of different options that first-time mothers (like myself) might not have considered, I found that talking with my husband's aunt, an OB nurse of 30 years' experience, to be much more calming, simply because the tone of the aunt was one of common sense, while the tone of this book is, well. . . it's hard to characterize without being disparaging, but it's a little flower-power for my tastes.

Editorial Review:

Gives expectant parents an overview of the options available, offering up-to-the-minute advice on such matters as physical and emotional preparation, the father's role, avoiding a cesarean birth, and other information. 35,000 first printing. Tour.

this book represents a straightforward way to get your baby to sleep through the night

A must have for every parent... 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My husband and I were skeptical that this book would work for our baby. The longest stretch our baby slept before we started the program was about 3 hours. Well, our son is almost 4 months old now and he's been sleeping for 12 hours every night for the past 6 weeks. This book has been a godsend. Besides getting our son to sleep for 12 hours throughout the night, this book also helped us get onto a predictable schedule. We weren't even that strict about eliminating the night feedings. When we were doing the training, we just fed him however much he wanted when he woke up in the middle of the night. He just eliminated them on his own. I think the key really is the four feedings a day and developing a night routine. I know there are people out there who are anti-schedule, but honestly, this schedule has been the best thing for our whole family. Our baby is happy and thriving and we get comments all the time from people about how content he is. For the people out there who are bashing this book, I think that they haven't actually tried this program. Our baby took to this really easily which made me wonder if this was more my baby's natural rhythm than the "on demand" thing I had been doing previously. Besides having a happier baby, we are much happier parents. I am a much better mom now that I'm getting sleep. My husband and I get compliments on how content WE are as well. I feel much more confident as a parent knowing that I have a calm, predictable household. From working in the public schools for many years as a counselor, I know how important schedules are for kids and that in general, households with predictable routines do much better than those who don't. This book helped me to accomplish that really early on. Plus, it's just so simple and easy to read and follow. I give this book my highest recommendation. To all you parents out there who are open to guiding your child to better sleep habits, read this book and follow the program. Trust me, it will be the best decision you've ever made!

Editorial Review:

Suzy Giordano, affectionately known as "The Baby Coach," shares her highly effective sleep-training method in this step-by-step guide to let both baby and parent enjoy long, peaceful nights. Full of common sense and specific tips, the Baby Coach's plan offers time- and family-tested techniques to help any baby up to the age of 18 months who has trouble sleeping through the night.

Originally developed for newborn multiples, this sleep-training method worked so well with twins and triplets that families with singletons and older babies began asking Suzy to share her recipe for success, resulting in: regular feeding times; 12 hours' sleep at night; three hours' sleep during the day; peace of mind for parent and baby; and less strain on parents-and their marriage. This edition includes a new chapter on implementing the program with babies up to 18 months.

Thanks for the book! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

What I liked about Dr. Baker's book is how sympathetic he sounds to those of us who deal daily with children with emotional and cognitive disorders or just plain difficulties. At the same time, he doesn't let us off the hook nor lull us into thinking that our responses to explosive situations, however understandable and legitimate, may not be the right ones. He clearly has the hands-on experience, both with kids and with those who care for and work with them. He gives just the right amount of personal anecdote to balance the more academic research data. He graciously recommends books and articles written by others working in the field, while synthesizing their many approaches. And importantly, he addresses teachers and parents both, which hopefully helps all of us to think of each other as teammates rather than assigners or bearers of blame. Plus, he gives lots of good, practical suggestions. Thanks for No More Meltdowns!
