This book really works! Super Nanny must have read it!! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I purchased an earlier edition of this book when my first son was a toddler. The method described in this book is straightforward, sensible, logical, and easily accessible in times of need. Following these methods has always worked wonders with my first child, and is presently working beautifully with my second. This book contains advice that is so simple and logical that it can be fully understood by preschool age children, and yet is extremely effective with older children as well. The book is relatively short, and broken down into specific behavior areas, so it is very easy to read, even for a BUSY new mother. I wish my parents would have had this book available to them when I was a child. Beatings and screaming only left me angry and isolated. My children respect me and we have very loving relationships because they understand my rules and they know what happens each time they misbehave. So we have more time for positive interaction.

It usually only takes a few applications of this method to eliminate undesirable behavior. Very seldom, it is still necessary to swat a child on the backside once or twice when all other methods have been exhausted, of course. Spanking as a LAST RESORT, AFTER all the measures advised in this book have been exhausted, is very seldom necessary. I praise the authors and thank them enormously. That this book is still being published in new editions shows that it is an excellent book. I think Super Nanny must have read this book!

Description 5 out of 5 stars.

Having a child addicted to alcohol or drugs is one of the most heartbreaking and challenging problems that parents may face. Here, in a revision of her bestselling 1982 book, Neff offers practical, loving and completely updated help to those struggling with that situation. Although the specific 12-step program that Neff stresses does not exist everywhere, parents can adopt the principles she outlines and form support groups with other parents. Central to Neff's approach is "detachment from the abuser," which entails allowing the abuser to "bottom out" without "padding the corners" (often called "enabling" in other references). This method, argues Neff, provides one of the few hopes for the abuser and his or her family. It is also terrifying, however, to parents who lack the support and distancing of the tough-love approach. By far the largest part of Neff's book is devoted to the stories of seven families who have faced the crisis of the addicted child and come through it stronger and more spiritually intact. In short, this book should be required reading for every parent with a child in trouble.

Editorial Review:

For more than a decade, Tough Love has been the standard text for families dealing with substance abuse. Now revised to reflect the changes in the Palmer Drug Abuse Program on which it was based, Tough Love again meets the needs of families in turmoil. Neff gathers real-life accounts of young drug users who needed to receive help, and of the parents' role in seeing that they received it.

This Book has Everything, and is Easy to Read 5 out of 5 stars.
27 of 28 people found this review helpful.

I have read a lot of child raising books, and I think this book is very helpful as it succinctly covers most of (what I think) are the most important topics. It is 129 pages, though is fairly large print, has charts, and bulleted items, and is easy to read/ refer back to. It is written by Dr. Daniel Amen, a child psychiatrist.

There are 25 chapters encompassed in this 129 page book. Thus each topic is quickly, and succinctly covered in an easy to read format. Some chapter titles are "Different Parenting Styles, Why Children Struggle, Why Parents Struggle, Clear Steps to Improve the Quality of your relationship with your Child, Managing Public Misbehavior, Reinforcing your child's Positive Behavior, etc. There are also checklists to check for different types of ADD/ADHD

Some points in the book are:

1. "Special Time is the Best Investment you can make with your Children"
The book also discusses, goals for parents, and children, common traps, Family Rules which Dr. Amen suggests are posted in the house (Tell the Truth, No Arguing with Parents, Respect each other's Property, Do what Mom and Dad say the First Time, etc.)
The book reviews the importance of (and how to be) Consistent, Time Outs, etc.
It sounds basic, but really parenting should be basic. I think this book fairly succinctly covers the main things parents and children need to do for an effective relationship/childraising experience. If you are familiar with other childraising books, it incorporates similar ideas to "Love and Logic", "How to Talk so Kids will Listen ...", and "Parenting the Strong Willed Child", among others.

I believe this book is excellent for giving a nice overview of the basics for raising children (often things we forget about, like not reminding/nagging, following through with consequences, and spending positive, quality time with our kids, so they want to be good and behave well. Some of the other books out there give more examples for what to do or say in each particular situation, though I think this books really has it all, and is easy to read.

Editorial Review:

Parenting a child is one of the most important responsibilities any of us ever undertake. Yet it does not require any special training period or any prior experience. Parenting difficult children requires 'superior' parenting skills. This programme is designed to give you the best parenting skills in a fun and practical way. It will give you clear, quick, and lasting results. Dr Amen has taught this parenting course for the past 15 years. It is by far one of the most effective tools for helping children who struggle.

FROM A FAMILY WHO ADOPTED THREE RUSSIAN CHILDREN 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Dr. Federici's book saved our family. We were drowning in chaos and confusion, and with 3 very troubled adopted children. His book is an extension of his practice model (proper evaluation and intensive parent training). All the other professionals we saw did not have a clue how to handle our children, so we went on our own and got the right help we needed. Nothing crazy like "holding therapy" which we tried and discontinued. This book give structure and hope when all else is or has failed.

A MUST FOR PARENTS OF INTERNATIONALLY ADOPTED CHILDREN 5 out of 5 stars.

We have twin sons that we adopted from Bulgaria at 2 years old in '04. One has more behavioral issues than the other, and the other has more developmental delays. I had lost sympathy for my little defiant, destructive, tantrum-throwing, whining, fellow until I read this book. It helped me to understand that his issues aren't just behavioral, but neurological, in nature. It has also given us the guidance we needed to ask educated questions of his psychiatrist to get a more accurate diagnosis and plan for the future. I will recommend it to all of his teachers and behavioral specialists that will deal with him on a regular basis. Most importantly, my heart has softened once again for that little undernourished, deprived orphan that we brought home not too long ago. There's a sweet, scared boy under those bristles.

Editorial Review:

This SECOND EDITION of Dr. Federici's book, Help for the Hopeless Child, A Guide for Families (with Special Discussion for Assessing and Treating the Post-Institutionalized Child) has expanded text and updated adoption figures, intensive family treatment program and multi-discipline interventions. Additional discussion regarding more complex child developmental disorders.

Great supplement to the CD's 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a perfect pocket guide for those who have listened to or read the Preparing for Adolescence CD's or book. Dr. Dobson provides scenarios and even offers suggestions on how to deal with difficult situations involving teenagers. I definitely recommend this book to any parent wishing to raise their teenager following Biblical principles. You can't go wrong when God is involved!

dissappointed 2 out of 5 stars.

I was not impressed with this book although I'm a big fan of Focus on the Family and Dr. Dobson. I just felt this book didn't deliver much at all. I think Boundaries with Teens would be a much better choice. I actually have the book on CD. I listen while waiting to pick kids up from school. It offers a lot of great advice and suggestions on life with teens.

Real Solutions for Parents

Most children learn to stop throwing temper tantrums, lying, refusing to go to bed or take a bath at an early age. But some have trouble with impulsivity and self-control, problems that, if left unchecked, can lead to more serious long-term issues that can even cross the line into crime and delinquency. This book offers a sound and safe step-by-step program for heading off conflict and getting your child to cooperate.

This step-by-step approach concentrates on the most common out-of-control behaviors the author has encountered in his extensive work with parents and children. It advises you on the finer points of effective discipline, including eye contact, body language, tone of voice, and word choice. You'll learn a uniquely effective strategy for managing an out-of-control child: the behavior contract. With this technique, you can establish clearly what you expect from your child and make clear the consequences when he or she does--or does not--exercise behavior control. With a little effort and patience and a lot of love, this guid will help you control and find peace with even the most defiant child.

Great book for raising polite and responsive children! 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 14 people found this review helpful.

I got this book off my local bookstore shelf and drove right in. I have one daughter of my own and 2 step children. The Step kids have NOT had ANY discipline from their birth mother and were disrupting my calm and structured household. My main concern was that these kids behaviors would be taught to my well mannered and polite daughter. I had to do something and FAST! These children had no concept of earning their privilidges or listening skills and my new husband and I were going NUTS! I went to the book store for help and this book was a GOD sent! It is not for the timid or people without a backbone. You must be able to Lay down the law and follow through will all consequences "with teeth" every time. Kids need consistenancy and rules. Ms. Peters outlines how to do this and how to get the kids moving and moving NOW, with timers and teaching kids the work ethic and rewards for choosing good behavior. I recommend this book to all parents who have the ability to really take a hard look at themselves and are ready to make some difficult changes in their own behavior for the benefit of thier children. Read it - it's excellent!

A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO WORKS WITH OR HAS CHILDREN!` 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Becky Bailey has written possibly one of the best books on guidance ever. She describes the importance of using appropriate, positive techniques when guiding children as opposed to punitive, negative techniques many of us were raised with. This book is easy to read and truly down to earth--no tricky terms or language. She discusses how important it is for children to be given the opportunity and the right to feel, to be validated for how they feel, to feel absolutely safe within their environment along with so many other key components to providing a trusting, nurturing environment for kids. I agree strongly with Bev Bos' comment on the back of the book, "It also needs to be a part of required material sent home from the hospital with every new parent! Becky writes straight from the heart!" Becoming The Parent You Want To Be by L. Davis and J. Keyser is another book that is so compatible with this one. Get them both, learn how to nurture children through their developmental process AND CELEBRATE TOGETHER!!

Editorial Review:

This book provides readers with a humorous and enlightening way to uncover damaging beliefs that adults hold about themselves and children. With this new understanding, readers are guided through specific examples, situations and interactive discipline skills. The book is based on love and acceptance instead of fear and control. Step-by-step, readers learn how to teach children to meet their needs in socially acceptable ways without adults being too controlling or permissive. This book is for every parent or teacher who wants to create an environment of problem solving where children "choose" to be participate and cooperate. There is a better way!
