The teaching is excellent. Every parent should read the book... and apply it.

Worst book I have ever read. 1 out of 5 stars.

This book is just a manual on how to make your kid misirable by spanking him and pain. The father is bigger, then he has to use his force to correct the kid. I think parents are smarter too, so they can use the intelligence to make their childs change.

Buen libro 4 out of 5 stars.

Successful Strategiesk for Working with Difficult Kids 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This is a 5 Star book. Until I read this book I throught that I was the only one that believed in holding kids accountable for their actions. The same strategies outlined in this book worked for me the 22 years I spent in the Marine Corps. I can't begin to count the times that I've had young people come back an tell me that the strategies I used in working with them was just what they needed, it makes them think before they act. If you use the strategies outlined in this book, you will not go wrong. And the best part is that the kids will come back and thank you later for helping turn their lives around.

Thank You Again, Joyce for putting it into simple, easy to use strategies, as well as common sense.

Semper Fi!

Sound and to the point 4 out of 5 stars.

A seal on the cover of this book advertises, "Parents or Professionals: Step by Step Help for the Discipline Resistant Child." A fairly good description of the contents. The book was written by a therapist with experience in residential treatment programs. Its language and presentation make it accessible to the "lay person," though I think the book is more geared for professionals. The emphasis is on strategies for handling youngsters who are angry and defiant, though there is also information on self-care as a part of coping. There is also a short section on ADHD and an appendix on suicide. The advice in this book is not earthshaking, but I found it to be practical and realistic. I read it from the perspective of being a foster parent and found it helpful in that regard.

Editorial Review:

Mommy and Daddy Are Always Supposed to Say Yes ... Aren't They? is a wonderful book for preschoolers and their parents, with a powerful message that will leave parents, pediatricians, and preschool teachers cheering. Dr. Annye Rothenberg is a child/parent psychologist with 20 years of experience with typical preschoolers and their parents. She knows parents are eager to raise happy children with high self-esteem. But in this two-section book -- one for preschoolers and one for parents -- she shows why and how parents are getting off track ... and often raising children with too much indulgence. As a mother herself, she knows parents don't want to raise self-centered, disrespectful, and angry children. In this book, she guides parents in practical ways that make good sense so they and their children can be confident, empathetic, and content. The children's story will delight preschoolers and teaches them just what parents want them to learn -- why parents can't give in just because preschoolers want them to -- and does it in a story beautifully and colorfully illustrated with warmth and humor by the talented artist Marion Eldridge. The parents' section is insightful, clear, and wise, with lots of take-aways that parents can immediately use to help children feel good about themselves but not become over-controlling. It teaches how preschoolers think, and what are reasonable rules to have. Parents will learn how to work out parenting differences with their spouses. They'll also discover if their child is learning what they want them to about behavior, and if not, what to do about it. Parents will love having the confusing and conflicting parenting theories woven together into something concise and clear. Many examples showing other families experiences will ring true, and the summary at the end will be a wonderful refresher to use in the future. This book will also be of great value to pediatricians, preschool teachers, and mental health professionals.

Editorial Review:

What can you do when a child just won't listen? How we speak to each other is at the very heart of human relationships. Children are often much better than adults at reading between the lines and deciphering the messages we send through body language and tone of voice. This is an invaluable handbook for parents and teachers on how to communicate better with children. It covers all aspects of talking to and, importantly, listening to children, including communication with children of different ages and understanding the wider situation in which the conversation is taking place. The author translates the theory into practical, everyday solutions. There are useful exercises throughout, to help us communicate more successfully.

Helpful and Practical 5 out of 5 stars.

This book gives great practical ideas and strategies for dealing with children of all ages and stages. I found it particularly helpful for my toddler who is in the "terrible" twos. The tips really help. There are great sections on children from nontraditional families also. It's a great book!

Got to have it! 5 out of 5 stars.

I purchased this book 28 years ago as a guide to help disciplining my son. I found that it's advice helped me through my sons different stages of growth and maturity. I recently bought one for my friend, and she too love the advice it offers. All parents can use a little advice from time to time and this book is a good one.

a different approach than many current popular theories 4 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Ms Mitchell presents a four step plan for the adult to use as they address a situation, a way of thinking and acting before approaching the child and during the interaction. These mandates are ANTICIPATE, HESITATE, INVESTIGATE and COMMUNICATE. Ms Mitchell explains these clearly and concisely. She uses many anecdotes and examples to explain her theories and to suggest alternative parental responses. Through the examples, she encourages the adult to think about their own initial "gut" reaction and how using her format, one might come up with a different, more effective response to the child. She also gives a comment at the end of each case to summarize the issue. She gives some very good concrete suggestions which are helpful and insightful. Ms Mitchell helps parents understand how their words and behaviors are received by the child, how it sounds to them and how it feels, both at the time it occurs as well as the cumulative effect. My only criticism is that there may be too many anecdotes. Often they flow one right after the other and the summary is brief, without more than one reframing of the situation. Overall, I felt she covered a large array of issues and situations and was consistent in her approach to each situation, keeping true to her mandates.

I found this book to be really, really good. 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was the most practical guide to managing children's behavior ever! I have an 8-year old son with high-functioning autism and a 6-year old neurotypical daughter. I received as much information about helping to get my daughter to stay in her bed at night and to get ready more quickly and willingly in the morning as I did dealing with my son's behavior issues. A great big "thank you" to the authors, both of whom obviously have experience not just as behavior professionals but as parents as well.

Editorial Review:

This book is a practical, user-friendly guide for parents implementing positive behavior support (PBS) in their homes. It assists parents in understanding and resolving problems through proactive, effective, and research-based methods. PBS is accepted as a best practice within schools and this book makes this approach accessible to families. The book guides parents to better understand and solve their own problems by restructuring their homes and routines and addressing problem behavior effectively. The book contains detailed case examples and worksheets to encourage use by the readers, whether they are parents, teachers, or other professionals.

Editorial Review:

From the Author of Raising Children Who Refuse to Be Raised and Traumatic Experience and the Brain comes this third book in the difficult children trilogy. For more than 30 years, Dr. Dave Ziegler has been a psychologist, therapist, and foster parent to hundreds of the most challenging children. His methods have helped these "impossible" children--and their parents, teachers, and caregivers--to get back on the right track. He has done what many therapists don't know how to do: help to raise troubled youths, who are the exceptions to all the usual rules, into healthy, successful human beings. This book emphasizes an important element of being successful with difficult children hope. The repeated message is not only that success is possible, but also that it is realistically achievable. However, success comes only with the right type of hard work combined with a deep understanding of what troubled children need. If success with your child is escaping your grasp, you'll find some help in these pages.
