This book is part of a series put out on a variety of topics including mental health issues. The presentation is similar to what a "Parenting for Dummies" book might look like without making the reader feel dumb. As a Therapist, I use this series with regularity to emphasize specific problem areas with my clients and/or their parents. A good resource guide for parents of children with common behavioral issues. Too basic for more serious mental illnesses, i.e. ADHD, substance abuse, PDD, etc.

Can discipline work like magic? 4 out of 5 stars.
23 of 23 people found this review helpful.

Reviewed by Tammy Petty Conrad for Reader Views (12/07)

There are certainly enough parenting books on the market today with a variety of topics to choose from. Still parents are looking for the magic that can help them discipline their children in a less painful and more effective manner. These authors, one a clinical psychologist and the other a certified counselor and associate pastor, offer practical tips for parents and other caregivers to manage the behavior of young children. The book introduces its concepts within the framework of the teachings of the Bible. The authors admit that "The Bible gives many great principles for raising children. The difficulty comes in application." Therefore, the need for the book.

We've all been in a check-out line and wondered why the parents didn't discipline the child in the next aisle screaming for a candy bar. Most of us have probably witnessed a child being disciplined inappropriately too. It is not an easy task to do it right, but so worthwhile.

The book is divided into three steps. First you learn how to control obnoxious behavior. Second you learn seven methods for encouraging appropriate and positive behavior. Finally you lean how to maintain healthy relationships. Despite the title, there is really no magic, but instead precise tools that are simple and effective in helping parents to resolve their children's discipline issues.

The organization of the book makes it easy-to-follow. I appreciate the Points to Remember at the end of each chapter as they summarize the main ideas. The Questions for Christian Practice give readers the opportunity to reflect on what they've read and even refer to specific chapters in the Bible. The authors make the introduced concepts seem so simple that you can start using them immediately.

The Little Adult Assumption was a new way of thinking for me. Of course children aren't adults, but we do sometimes try to deal with them as if they were. The book talks about the two biggest mistakes parents make: too much talking and too much emotion. This chapter will always have a bookmark in it so I can refer back to it frequently to help me with some of my top issues too. The authors prescribe positive self-talk, reciting appropriate Bible verses, praying and finally seeking counseling if needed to deal with these issues.

It is particularly useful that there are exact scenarios included with scripts of how events may play out based on how parents react. It also addresses other caregivers and how they can follow the same system as the parents. The authors even include a chapter on the Kickoff Conversation, or how to introduce the new program to your children. The book sticks to its Bible base with frequent quotes. "Train up a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it" sums up the program (Proverbs 22:6).

We can all use more training on childrearing. It is a never-ending job, but one of the most important ones we will ever do. "1-2-3 Magic for Christian Parents: Effective Discipline for Children 2 - 12" is a book worth picking up and actually reading before your child grows up.

Editorial Review:

Complete with relevant Bible verses, explanations, and exercises, this guide builds on the enormously popular 1-2-3 Magic discipline system by addressing the needs of a Christian parent. Focused on the three main tasks of controlling obnoxious behavior, encouraging good behavior, and strengthening the parent–child relationship, this program is simple, effective, and can be implemented immediately. Addressing everything from homework and chores to more serious tantrums and fighting, this guide teaches parents to take charge—yet refrain from any physical discipline or yelling—leading to happier parents, better behaved children, and a more peaceful home environment.

Editorial Review:

The first edition of Positive Discipline A-Z became a classic child-rearing text that helped change the way parents and experts feel about discipline. In this revised and expanded version, child psychologist Jane Nelson (coauthor of the entire Positive Discipline series) teams up with speaker and therapist Lynn Lott and H. Stephen Glenn (Raising Self-Reliant Children). Positive Discipline is based on the theories of child development expert Rudolf Dreikurs, and uses communication, consistency, and specific techniques (such as the four-step follow-through method, taking time for training, giving age-appropriate chores to teach responsibility, and using positive time-outs in which the child takes some time with a calming activity) to help children develop the life skills they need to be "effective, happy, contributing, and respectful members of the family and society."

The first part of the text provides an introduction to the concept of positive discipline and its tools. The second part of the book is an alphabetical breakdown of more than 100 child-rearing topics, from addiction to zits--including cruelty to animals, fairness, laundry, negative children, pampering, self-esteem, tattling, whining, and much more. Here, the authors move from general theory to specific suggestions and approaches for hard-core parenting issues. Whether read for theory or read for specificity, this book is terrific--and important. --Ericka Lutz

I'VE READ MANY BOOKS ON CHILDREN AND HOW TO HANDLE THEM. THIS WAS THE BEST BY FAR. IT IS AN EASY READ AND THE PROGRAM ABSOLUTELY WORKS, AS LONG AS YOU ARE CONSISTENT.

Editorial Review:

Every child has "ornery" moments, but more than 1 in 20 American children exhibit behavioral problems that are out of control. For readers struggling with an unyielding or combative child, YOUR DEFIANT CHILD: EIGHT STEPS TO BETTER BEHAVIOR offers the understanding and guidance they need. Drawing on Dr. Russell A. Barkley's many years of work with parents and children, the book clearly explains what causes defiance, when it becomes a problem, and how it can be resolved. The book's comprehensive eight-step program stresses consistency and cooperation, promoting changes through a system of praise, rewards, and mild punishment. Readers learn tools and strategies for establishing clear patterns of discipline, communicating with children on a level they can understand, and reducing family stress overall. Filled with helpful charts, questionnaires, and checklists, YOUR DEFIANT CHILD helps parents get their child's behavior back on track and restore harmony in the home.

Great way for parents to reinforce 123 magic! 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

As a mental health provider, I believe this can be a great way to train parents to really teach their children the 123 way. I love the section where it addresses how they might get around the system and cuts them off from the start.

Editorial Review:

By presenting the popular 1-2-3 Magic parenting program from a child’s point of view, this innovative guide provides kids with a thorough understanding of the disciplinary system—from the counting and time-out methods parents will be using to how better behavior benefits the entire family and leaves more time for play. Storytelling portions are coupled with copious illustrations to help describe the basic tenets of 1-2-3 Magic—such as positive reinforcement, charting, and the docking system—while a question-and-answer section outlines common situations, including What if I don’t go to my room? Will I still be counted if I have a friend over? and What kinds of things can we do for one-on-one fun? Crossword puzzles, word searches, and journal suggestions further encourage children to apply what they’ve learned about the methods.

The 7 Basic Skills for Turning Conflict into Cooperation.

Have you ever opened your mouth to discipline your child, and your parents' nastiest words tumble out? In an era when most parenting books focus on the child, this book supports parents in dealing more positively with themselves as well as their toddler–to–school–age children, offering specific tools to stop policing and pleading with kids and start being the parents we want to be.

Based on Dr. Bailey's more than 25 years of work with children, this book explains that how we discipline ourselves is ultimately how we discipline our children. Her "Seven Powers for Self–Control" dramatically increase our ability to keep our cool with our children. These correspond to "Seven Basic Discipline Skills" we can use with our children in conflict situations. As children internalise these skills, they naturally learn "Seven Values for Living," which include integrity, respect, compassion, and responsibility.

Philosophical Conundrum 3 out of 5 stars.
36 of 37 people found this review helpful.

I have followed the principles in this book as well as other NVC books and love the quality of connection I have with my kids (ages 5 and 2). However, now that my older son is in Kindergarten, we're dealing with a huge problem. The teacher has 24 kids in the class and does not have time to negotiate and find a win-win solution with each one. My son is getting in trouble almost every day for not following directions (i.e. clean up when everyone is cleaning up, not on his own schedule)and is starting to feel like a bad kid. Now I feel like we have to re-parent in some ways using a more 'love-and-logic' approach. I never wanted to be the kind of parent who says, "Do it because I said so." But I now realize that kids need to learn to follow the rules so that they themselves can be happier in society. We now do a lot of talking about what a 'team player' does. This is a great book but for me, it's missing the piece about teaching your kids to follow the rules, because that's how school, work and much of society work. It's wonderful for a parent and child to respect each other equally but this needs to be balanced with the idea that kid's individual needs (or anyone's for that matter) often cannot be accommodated. The philosophical conundrum for me is when to be the NVC parent and when to be the parent who says, "If you're a member of this family, this is what we do (i.e. sit down all together for dinner)." I guess the perfect parenting approach is eclectic; borrowing a little from each theory.

Editorial Review:

More than a tool to correct bad behavior, this handbook urges parents to move beyond typical discipline techniques by creating an environment based on mutual respect, emotional safety, and positive, open communication. The seven outlined principles redefine the parent-dominated family by teaching parents how to achieve mutual parent/child respect without being submissive, set firm limits without using demands or coercion, and empower children to open up, cooperate, and realize their own innate potential. Based on Marshall Rosenberg's Nonviolent Communication process, the framework helps parents break down the barriers to outstanding relationships with their kids by avoiding destructive language and habits that keep parents and children from understanding one another. Activities, stories, and resources help parents immediately apply the seven keys to any parenting situation.
