Editorial Review:

In a book likely to transform how parents manage many of their child's daily struggles, Drs. Smith and Gouze explain the central and frequently unrecognized role that sensory processing problems play in a child's emotional and behavioral difficulties. Practicing child psychologists, and themselves parents of children with sensory integration problems, their message is innovative, practical, and, above all, full of hope.

A child with sensory processing problems overreacts or underreacts to sensory experiences most of us take in stride. A busy classroom, new clothes, food smells, sports activities, even hugs can send such a child spinning out of control. The result can be heartbreaking: battles over dressing, bathing, schoolwork, social functions, holidays, and countless other events. In addition, the authors say, many childhood psychiatric disorders may have an unidentified sensory component.

Readers Will Learn:

  • The latest scientific knowledge about sensory integration
  • How to recognize sensory processing problems in children and evaluate the options for treatment
  • How to prevent conflicts by viewing the child's world through a "sensory lens"
  • Strategies for handling sensory integration challenges at home, at school, and in twenty-first century kid culture

The result: a happier childhood, a more harmonious family, and a more cooperative classroom. This thoroughly researched, useful, and compassionate guide will help families start on a new path of empowerment and success.

Another book I highly recommend 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great book for resources when you just don't know what to do with your children to discipline them and 'train them up in the way they should go'! It has a great index in the back so you just have to look up the behavior you're trying to correct i.e. whining or lying or disobedience and it will have the corresponding page with bible verses, a story of a lesson learned and many ideas of creative disciplinary actions for the children. There are many, so I had to mark my book with tabs. Some work for your children at different stages and what didn't work before, could work later on! Great resource! It also has applicable bible verses to learn about why that offense is not right in God's eyes and an applicable prayer to teach your children to pray about their offense. We still need to coach our children in the how to pray and ask for forgiveness-that does not come naturally to us-sin does-asking forgiveness to clean our hearts does not! Thanks Lisa Welchel and MOPS (mothers fo preschoolers) for introducing this book to me!

Editorial Review:

Drawing from her own family's experiences and from interaction with other parents, Lisa Whelchel offers creative solutions for parents who are out of ideas and desperate for new, proven approaches to discipline. In addition to advice on topics such as sibling conflict and lying, Whelchel offers a biblical perspective and down-to-earth encouragement to parents who are feeling overwhelmed. A handy reference guide that provides ideas for specific situations rounds out this resource that will be a blessing to parents and their children. Now in softcover.

I see light at the end of the tunnel 5 out of 5 stars.

I am so thankful for this book.I was desperatley searching for help. I ordered 3 books. Two were beautiful paperbacks and then this little paper back. I threw it aside because i didnt like the way it looked (small book and printing was small) After reading the 1st 2 and being very disapointed i finally picked up this one, and i was hooked. For once a book that not only offers suggestions but gives you steps to accomplish them. My son is 7 and adopted (at birth)has ADHD, ODD and some fetal alcohol problems. Nothing seemed to work and i was losing all hope of ever having any peace in our home. The hold down method seemed somewhat extreme but i had no luck with making him stay in time out. I decided to do exactly what the author suggested and i was determined to take it as far as i needed. I had to hold him for a solid 2 1/2 hours the first time. He tryed biting, cursing, spitting and anythng else he could do to get me angry. He was shocked that nothing he could do seemed to upset me. (on the outside anyway)The rest of the day went well. The next morning i was praying that he wouldn't hit anyone again because i was so sore i wasn't certain i could hold him down. Well, he did and i had to hold him again. This time i only had to do so for 1 hour and 10 minutes, the next day 20 minutes and that was 6 weeks ago. I havent had to do it again until yesterday, and that one was an amazing 5 minutes. He has been more loving toward me than i could ever imagine. He wants to be with me and it is enjoyable. The book suggests that you use this with only 1 or 2 of the biggest issues. Ours was hitting anyone he walked by. This is to establish authority in the home. Children with ODD tend to put themslves on the same level as adults. Children need to be secure knowing that they have boundries. I used to let him get away with things because i couldn't find away to keep him from it. I walked on eggshells to keep any confrontation from happening. I am certain now that he wasn't secure and was crying out for me to set boundries for him. My have big hopes for my son. He is the next generation and i cannot allow him to continue down that road of destruction. It may seem extreme to some but ODD is not just being hard to get along with. It's the toughest thing i have ever dealt with. I have 3 married children, have fostered 52 and adopted 3. ODD is real and one of the hardest types to deal with. You are not sterotyping your child but doing something for him that will enable him to get along in the real world. God doesn't let his children get away with things. The Bible says that the Lord disciplines those he loves. It isn't alway plesant but it is always for our best. I ordered another for my sons teacher. Of course there are things she can't do but many others she can and we can work together.

Not written for the real world... 1 out of 5 stars.
14 of 52 people found this review helpful.

The advice in this book sounds very nice and gentle and compassionate but the problem is that it works only on children who are obedient and fairly submissive by nature. Lots of kids figure out the game after a while. What if your child refuses to stay in "time out"? What happens when you have taken away all the privileges? (and little kids just don't have that many). What about older kids who just laugh at this kind of approach? You'd better go buy another book because Dr. Brazelton doesn't address real discipline problems.

The Very Best Book on Creating Self Esteem 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I read many books when my daughter was born in 1986. This was the very very best. I just recommended it to a friend and decided to report on what happend to my kids using Dorothy's approach.

My daughter graduates from college this May. I credit much of her confidence, poise, independence, self discipline, sound decison making, and self awareness to implementing the ideas presented in this book. Same with my 15 year old son.

I reckoned if i did a few things correctly when their little brains were soft and impressionable they would have the tools to weather whatever storms crossed their paths in the future. These storms did appear a few years ago, and my kids held up perfectly.

My kids are biracial. No big deal today, but a bigger one in 1986. So I decided they required double doses of self esteem. Fortunately they've encountered very little racism. A blip, if that.

Read the book and do the simple things she recommends. Toss the anti gay remarks, not the book.

Added May 25, 2008: My daughter just graduated summa cum laude from Tufts. Thanks Dorothy! She'll join Teach for America next month.

Editorial Review:

Every parent has nightmares about that moment when their child is refused a request (I want a candy bar, Mommy! Not today, Johnny.) and in response, he falls to the ground, screams, and thrashes about--all in a very public place. Mortified by this tantrum, Mommy might be tempted to give in, buy the candy bar, end the embarrassing moment, and ultimately behave in a way that tells Johnny tantrums work. There's a better way, says Sal Severe, author of How to Behave So Your Children Will, Too!. His commonsense advice has been culled from his years as an educator working with children with behavior disorders. Many of the anecdotal stories that pepper How to Behave were gathered during parenting workshops that have reached more than 20,000 parents.

Solidly putting the responsibility for a child's behavior on the parents, How to Behave addresses a wide range of issues, such as how children learn to push their parents' buttons, why children misbehave, and how to motivate kids to behave using simple rules and consequences. Push aside all the nitty-gritty advice, however, and several themes emerge. Over and over, Severe emphasizes that raising a child requires total parental consistency, that it takes awhile to get results from new parenting techniques, and that overall, parenting is a very tough job.

While this book (honored and recommended by the Parent Council, Parents' Choice Foundation, and the National Parenting Center) doesn't break any new ground, it does reinforce many tried and true parenting techniques. As Severe says, "This book provides hundreds of ideas. Not all of them will work all the time. You need to select the ideas that make sense to you." While some veteran parents might find his advice too basic, this is an invaluable book for mothers and fathers beginning the parenting journey. And even long-time parents are sure to find some valuable gems that will be useful as their children grow, change, and offer new behavioral challenges. --Virginia Smyth

His memorable, affecting, and sometimes humorous anecdotes help you regain confidence in your own judgment and ability to say No as they remind you that you're not alone in your parenting struggles. READ THIS REVIEW! 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 6 people found this review helpful.

First, before purchasing the book, don't be surprised when Dr. Dobson throws in his faith/religious beliefs into his parenting style. That is part of being a Christian. Allowing God to direct your actions in every aspect of life. I've read several 1-2 star reviews that don't like that....well, you should have researched the author a little more before purchasing....or read a few more reviews.

Second, MANY of the 1-2 star reviewers forgot the title of the book....The Strong-Willed Child. It seems that they think Dr. D's approaches are to be used with EVERY child. NOT SO!!! When you read the book, keep reminding yourself of the title of the book and what kind of a child his strategies are meant for. You obviously wouldn't use these strategies with your average or compliant child. In all sincerety, I believe that Dr. D's wisdom in the book is flying right over the heads of numerous 1-2 star reviewers who forgot the title of the book while reading or who aren't thinking deeply enough about the things he's trying to teach.

Here's my final note and my disclaimer.....After saying all of the above....no one approach or style works with every strong-willed child; I'm a 6th grade special education teacher....I've got several years of proof. There are however several ingredients that help strong-willed children through to success; many of which do not involve the child directly. I was one of them myself and I had several teachers tell my mother I'd end up in prison; so you can imagine how I must have behaved....well, look how the Lord used my difficulties to strengthen my heart for my profession and Him. There IS hope in Him! Happy reading.
