Valuable Tool!! 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful tool for not only group facilitators but for parents too. In section one you will find a comprehensive overview of the effects of anger, the triggers, and what I found most fascinating was the biological effects of anger that occurs in the brain of these children and of course keys to help manage the anger. I am thankful to have stumble upon this treasure.

Editorial Review:

This practical handbook helps adults to understand, manage and reflect constructively on children's anger. Featuring a wealth of familiar and easy-to-learn game, it is designed to foster successful anger management strategies for children aged 5-12.This book covers the theory behind the games in accessible language, and includes a broad range of enjoyable activities: active and passive, verbal and non-verbal, and for different sized groups. The games address issues that might arise in age-specific situations such as sharing a toy or facing peer pressure. They also encourage children to approach their emotions as a way to facilitate personal growth and healthy relationships. This is an ideal resource for teachers, parents, carers and all those working with anger management in children.

A Good Companion to Lerner's The Dance of Anger. 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Carol Tavris offers some very practical advice. Apart from when the expression of anger is intended to dissolve a relationship, anger becomes effective when: (1) the anger is directed at the offending person (telling friends may increase anger); (2) the expression satisfies your need to influence the situation and/or correct an injustice; and, (3) your approach seems likely to change the other person's behavior, which means you can express yourself so they can understand your point of view and so they will cooperate with you. She takes issue with those who would encourage venting. Like Harriet Goldhor Lerner, her goal is change.

Editorial Review:

"This landmark book" (San Francisco Chronicle) dispels the common myths about the causes and uses of anger -- for example, that expressing anger is always good for you, that suppressing anger is always unhealthy, or that women have special "anger problems" that men do not. Dr. Carol Tavris expertly examines every facet of that fascinating emotion -- from genetics to stress to the rage for justice.

Fully revised and updated, Anger: The Misunderstood Emotion now includes:

* A new consideration of biological politics: Should testosterone or PMS excuse rotten tempers or aggressive actions?

* The five conditions under which anger is likely to be effective -- and when it's not.

* Strategies for solving specific anger problems -- chronic anger, dealing with difficult people, repeated family battles, anger after divorce or victimization, and aggressive children.

Review from Parenting Press 4 out of 5 stars.
31 of 32 people found this review helpful.

Everything we do and everything we learn is based in some way on how we feel.

How we feel about our emotions-whether we value those emotions and how we cope-shapes how we nurture children.

Adapted from John Gottman's Raising an Emotionally Intelligent Child, this book helps adults identify their parenting and caregiving style. It explains the five important steps in "emotion coaching" children, to ensure that children are guided to healthy emotional growth.

Kids who can accept and share their emotions do better in many ways, Gottman's research shows:

They form stronger friendships;
They achieve more in school;
They bounce back from emotional crises more quickly; and
They are physically healthier.

Beautifully illustrated with photographs of parents and children.

An enthusiastic recommendation to all parents 5 out of 5 stars.
17 of 22 people found this review helpful.

Relationship and parenting expert, John Gottman and the Talaris Research Institute insightfully presents What Am I Feeling? an informed and informative exploration of the mindset of children, and how certain adjustments might care for the sensitivity of most children. Gottman places an easy-to-follow "parent-friendly" guide to the constructive mentality of most children with an educational content to create the ideal book for struggling parents making What Am I Feeling? an enthusiastic recommendation to all parents.

Read It Over and Over 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I have not only highlighted the daylights out of this book, I'm starting on my fourth time reading it. It has helped me deeply realize that anger in me is like acid in a styrofoam cup - it destroys the container. Thubten Chodron has a gift for translating the Buddhist teachings and philosophies into plain language that anyone can understand and apply.

This is the kind of book that I keep 2 or 3 copies on hand to give to friends, relatives and co-workers. It's a wonderful way to help people in conflict without being preachy.

I hope I get to meet Thubten Chodron one day so I can thank her for blessing us with this book.

Childproofing your exposed buttons 5 out of 5 stars.

American Buddhist nun Chodron has in this work produced a detailed and concise handbook which could be used practically by Buddhists and non-Buddhists alike. Of greed, hate and delusion representing the three roots of suffering, anger is the most easily seen with prominence in the sphere of relationships to other people. It is at this level that the book applies in our interactions with kin, associates and adversaries and how to change tensions into harmony. The presentation in part echoes "How to win friends and influence people" by D. Carnegie, though its tone is more esoteric and not one to help improve ones' charisma.

The narrative hits home its points e.g. in defending itself against the charge that anger could actually be beneficial by devices including a disarming logic and everyday examples both hypothetical and real. In the former, the personal third person pronoun (like in many modern books) switches easily though unpredictably between genders. It also draws on traditional texts and advice from meditation masters as well as Chodron's quietly forthright style.

About 18 chapters summarise all the facets of anger manifestation including how it applies to oneself. A strength of the book is how it fashions modern ways of thinking and concepts to make aspects of the teaching relevant e.g. "When Our Buttons Are Pushed" or "Conflict Styles". The book thus combines modern psychological approaches to understanding and dealing with stress with ancient wisdom. Topics include defining anger, patience, recognising anger, criticism and blame, dealing with enemies, envy, love and compassion and developing wisdom. The book contains two summarising appendices to clarify the lessons it teaches with a glossary and reading list.

This book will be particularly useful in penal institutes to help offenders and the probation service in "anger management courses" and wherever such lessons could apply from schools to Customer Service. Readers who think they do not need such a guide may in fact discover reservoirs of resentment within themselves after reading it. As an interesting digest it could be equally translated to help deal with alternative problems such as manifestations of greed. This is very much a book that points the way without detailed analysis of mind and liberation with some challenging wisdom. It points to the interconnectedness of all beings and the futility of anger, not least under conditions of "cyclic existence".

Editorial Review:

Presents a variety of Buddhist methods for subduing and preventing anger, not by changing what is happening, but by framing it differently.

Transpersonal Psychology the Eastern Way 5 out of 5 stars.
36 of 39 people found this review helpful.

Dan Goleman has done it again. A highly readable book rooted in scientific research - just like his two books on Emotional Intelligence. Compared to other edited Mind and Life Conference books, this one describes the conversation in an extremely lively manner with explanations on Buddhist and scientific concepts presented as footnotes, and as a result making comprehension possible even with some abstract concepts unfamiliar to novice like me.

The enthusiasm shown by Dr. Goleman in the ability of mind over body can be found throughout the book (especially in the chapter presented by him where H.H. the Dalai Lama commented "You've just given me a lot of ammunition). This is probably due to his own knowledge and keen interest in the Eastern psychology and meditation.

Editorial Review:

Can the mind heal the body? The Buddhist tradition says yes—and now many Western scientists are beginning to agree. Healing Emotions is the record of an extraordinary series of encounters between the Dalai Lama and prominent Western psychologists, physicians, and meditation teachers that sheds new light on the mind-body connection. Topics include: compassion as medicine; the nature of consciousness; self-esteem; and the meeting points of mind, body, and spirit. This edition contains a new foreword by the editor.

Editorial Review:

The long-awaited new book by the world-renowned psychologist whose In a Different Voice, published two decades ago, started an intellectual revolution by showing that theories of human psychology, based on studies of men, had overlooked and distorted basic aspects of the human experience.

Now, in The Birth of Pleasure, Carol Gilligan, once again breaking through imprisoning tradition, writes about love and the forces that stand in the way of pleasure. She shows us why love between a man and a woman is so often burdened by a history of loss and how it can be freed and opened to the pursuit of happiness. Tracing a lineage from Greek mythology to our own most intimate relationships, she asks why we relive tragic stories of loss and betrayal; drawing on her own research, she offers a radical new map of love.

Within the sweep of this adventurous book, Gilligan becomes our guide on a journey that takes us through novels and dreams, ancient legends and contemporary research, to an illumination of modern couples in crisis. She shows us how, although the liberation movements of the twentieth century have challenged old patriarchal structures, the underlying patterns remain: the early channeling of boys into “masculinity,” the double consciousness of girls in adolescence, the silences between men and women, the split between our social and inner selves. In the haunting love story of Psyche and Cupid, Gilligan discovers a crucial tale of resistance—letting us see how a path leading toward tragedy can be turned into a road leading to pleasure.

Open, accessible, and rich with emotion, the book rings with the voices of girls and boys, mothers, fathers, and lovers. Gilligan draws on Shakespeare’s plays, Freud’s case histories, and the novels of Hawthorne, Proust, Toni Morrison, Michael Ondaatje, and Arundhati Roy to illuminate critical points on the map. Her pioneering scholarship, superb writing, revolutionary argument, and stunning conclusion will make The Birth of Pleasure one of the important and enduring books of our time.

"Why has the love story in Western culture long assumed that pleasure leads to death, that love leads to loss? Carol Gilligan, in this brilliantly written book, explores the history of these associations, then traces the roots of an alternative narrative and draws a map to send us on our way. This is a wonderful book!" —Henry Louis Gates, Jr., W.E.B. DuBois Professor of the Humanities and Chair of the Afro-American Studies Department, Harvard University

"The Birth of Pleasure is a revolutionary book that will transform our beliefs about love, pleasure, human possibility, and ourselves. Carol Gilligan is a thinker and prophet of luminous grace, courage, and compassion."—Catharine Stimpson, University Professor and Dean, Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, New York University

"With poetic eloquence and fiery passion, Carol Gilligan may well be on the way to wresting pleasure from the brutal heart of patriarchy. Her book does no less than reconfigure what it might mean to love and be loved, a revolutionary act in itself." —Eve Ensler, author of The Vagina Monologues

great advice 5 out of 5 stars.
25 of 26 people found this review helpful.

This book offers advice and practical methods to help not only your child but your entire family handle, redirect and diffuse anger. Every parent and teacher should read this so they can become a part of the solution of raising a society of happy, communicative, calm children. I also believe in teaching children self-calming techniques like breathing, affimations, and relaxation.

I recommend audio book/CDs called "Indigo Dreams" and "Indigo Ocean Dreams" to anyone that has taken the initiative to help children manage anger.

Transforming Anger is good for Every One 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 11 people found this review helpful.

After having read just half of this book, I was using the techniques to overcome the trauma of a criminal intrusion in my life.

The author has gone beyond others on this topic to map out the journey of anger and a possible pathway back to peace. I think any book on this subject is exploratory. The terrain is uncharted by experts in psychology to my knowledge.

I found this book very readable, encouraging, helpful, and somewhat miraculous in terms of applicability to my circumstances.

I do not know if there is a standard of excellence by which to measure this kind of work. I applaud anyone for trying to write on the subject of anger and how to work with it. It is certainly relevant for any modern city dweller. Three hundred cheers to Dianne Lancaster.

Editorial Review:

Helps all children and families better understand and navigate the intense emotional patterns that anger and needs can create. Filled with insights, how-to's and practical guidelines for Transforming Anger Into Love(tm). Recommended by professionals.

Editorial Review:

How should we respond to a child's temper tantrum? To a teenager's sullen resentment? How can we help children and teens experience their anger without being overwhelmed by it? How can we deal with their anger before it leads to depression, isolation, or even violence?
In Healthy Anger, Bernard Golden draws upon more than twenty years of experience as a psychologist and teacher to offer specific, practical strategies for helping children and teens manage their anger constructively. Golden has developed a set of skills that parents, teachers, and counselors can use to show children how to identify the causes of anger; how to respond to it in ways that lead to an internal sense of competence and self-control; how to use anger to understand their own emotional situation; and how to develop a greater capacity for empathy towards themselves and others. And he shows parents how to cope with outbursts--including clear, step-by-step instructions and problem-solving skills--how to derail escalating anger, reward good behaviors, and recognize when professional help is needed. For anyone who has ever helplessly confronted a child's rage or a teenager's defiant fury, Healthy Anger offers a wealth of wise insight, clear advice, and eminently practical strategies for turning anger into understanding.
