Editorial Review:

Beyond Consequences, Logic, and Control covers in detail the effects of trauma on the body-mind and how trauma alters children’s behavioral responses. The first four chapters help parents and professionals clearly understand the neurological research behind the basic model given in this book, deemed, “The Stress Model.” While scientifically based in research, it is written in an easy to understand and easy to grasp format for anyone working with or parenting children with severe behaviors. The next seven chapters are individually devoted to seven behaviors typically seen with attachment-challenged children. These include lying, stealing, hoarding and gorging, aggression, defiance, lack of eye contact, and yes, even a chapter that talks candidly about how parents appear hostile and angry when they work to simply maintain their families from reaching complete states of chaos. Each of these chapters talks in depth on these specific behaviors and gives vivid and contrasting examples of how this love-based approach works to foster healing and works to develop relationships, as opposed to the fear-based traditional attachment parenting approaches that are being advocated in today’s attachment field. The authors end with a Parenting Bonus Section. True testimonials from parents who have been able to make significant changes in their homes with this model of parenting, giving real-life examples of how they have been able to find the healing, peace, and love that they had been seeking prior to working through the techniques outlined in this book.

RELIEF 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is a joy to read. It offers (in simple to understand language) an understanding of your emotions and many tools on how to handle them. I highly recommend this book to anyone, especially if you grew up in a family where your parents had emotional problems and were not able to offer you guidance or validation of your emotions while growing up.

It's a great treasure.....tb

You can teach an old woman new skills 5 out of 5 stars.

You can teach 4 year olds to count. You can teach an old dog to fetch. At 45 I thought there was no help for me. I just couldn't change. But this book helped me to learn the skills I needed to get along with myself my family and society. It is dry reading but keep at it and you will find a new person within you.

Editorial Review:

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a therapeutic technique designed to counter extreme emotional reactions — before they lead to overwhelming anger, depression, anxiety, and stress-related ailments. An eclectic mix of cognitive-behavioral techniques, skills training, Zen, and existentialism, DBT helps readers pay attention to their emotions, assess their blocks to controlling them, become less judgmental of themselves when they lose control, and ultimately eliminate overpowering feelings. Worksheets and assessment exercises round out this breakthrough program.

the educational tool I've been waiting for 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

As an elementary school counselor for over twenty years I have been looking for effective resources to share with students, parents and teachers that are practical and support the teaching of foundational self-regulation skills. Building Emotional Intelligence is the perfect developmental guide for both educators and parents in this respect, as it is very user-friendly and easy to implement with children of all ages.

The chapters are arranged in developmental stages and clearly describe simple activities appropriate for each school age. The actitivies are also provided in the accompanying CD, which is an ingenious way to support their intended application. My students have been loving the self-calming and focusing exercises on the CD, which have stimulated meaningful discussion. After doing one of the listening exercises on the CD this week, one kindergartener said,'When I feel lonely, I listen to my heart beat and then I know I'm not alone'. A guidance counselor couldn't ask for a more engaged outcome.

Our goal is to share this book with as many teachers and parents in our area as possible. One of our esteemed parents has said about it, 'This could change the world!'. Thank you, Linda, for this much-needed inner, as well as outer, peace tool.

Editorial Review:

What's the most important piece of your child's educational program? If you think it's math, science, or grammar, you might be overlooking an element that is fast becoming essential in today's stressful world: cultivating inner resiliency. In Building Emotional Intelligence, pioneering educator Linda Lantieri joins forces with internationally renowned psychologist Daniel Goleman to offer a breakthrough guide for helping children quiet their minds, calm their bodies, and identify and manage their emotions. Now available to the public for the first time, here are Lantieri's proven techniques arranged according to age group, complemented by a spoken-word CD with exercises presented by Goleman. "We need a new vision of education that includes the mind and the heart," says Lantieri. With Building Emotional Intelligence, parents, teachers, and caregivers have the tools necessary to help build these invaluable skills in the children they raise.

Hope comes in the form of a book 5 out of 5 stars.

I've been waiting for(needing)this book for years and years. Being involved in relationships where apologies were rare, and from parents who never did, this book will change the way I approach my future relationships. This, paired with the Five Love Languages, is a must read. Too bad they don't teach this kind of stuff in High School. This pair of books would be a perfect graduation or wedding gift. Jim from Florida.

Wonderful Book! 5 out of 5 stars.

Complete perfection in self-help book writing that actually WORKS 5 out of 5 stars.
31 of 31 people found this review helpful.

I love using self-help books as therapy: they are reasonably cheap and they mobilize you sometimes even better than a therapist - as you know you can't become passive or rely on someone else for your progress.

Over the years, I've seen quite a few good self-help books, and God knows, I've been duped by a few unhelpful ones in glossy covers. It always puzzles me to see how some of these real duds can manage to make it to the best seller's lists and stay there. I know it's human to seek simplistic answers, only to find out, that the solution to a long-term problem is never as easy and quick as the book promises.

A while back, I was lucky to get a hold of a book called The Authoritative Guide to Self-Help Books. The book is a result of a well-respected study that rates hundreds of self-help books/films/websites for various disorders such as depression, anger, obesity, anxiety, low self-esteem and so on. In the anger category, the only book found to be highly effective (5 stars) was the book I am reviewing.

This is the most concise book I've seen on this complex subject about 150 pages), but it's the essence of all I needed.

In my opinion, a self help book is good if:

1. It's simple, clear and free of psychobabble with a minimum of stories of non-existant humans;

2. It doesn't dwell exessively on the past no matter how sad, but rather enourages action to change;

3. The issues feel relevant and you see the application to your unique situation immediately;

4. It is scientifically proven to work. It does not promise you easy and quick results but realistic and common-sense;

The Anger Control Workbook is such self-help book.

It starts by teaching you how to relax on demand. Try to be angry when you are completely relaxed-it's impossible.

Relaxation is a skill that you perfect with 20-minute daily practice. You use this skill to temporarily calm yourself and buy time so that you can plead and reason with yourself not to act impulsively and cause an unrepairable damage.

Then, the book addresses your thought and belief system and helps to correct some of the distortions that are surely lurking there. Automatic and unnoticed distortions provide fertile ground for anger. They help sustain and justify its philosophical existance by painting all sort of seemingly inevitable catastrophes. Authors say, testing and correcting your silent dialog is the most important step in gaining control in any mood change, a.k.a. cognitive therapy.

Finally, the book teaches you how to inoculate yourself against various situations that make you angry by preventing any outbursts in the future. You compile the description of the situations that tick you off and deal with them on your own terms-at home while you are totally relaxed and safe by imagining yourself in the hot situation, and desensitizing yourself, until you get in control.

Often times, I actually found myself memorizing some of the books sentences, and reciting them to myself like mantra. For example, when getting pissed at people whom I deem as incompetent, I'd quell my anger by saying to myself "PEOPLE ARE DOING THEIR BEST". This sentence, as simple as corny as it might sound, would honestly humble myself and make me more human, calming a rising storm inside. It just had that click with me.

In the end, the obvious is worth repeating: this book or any self-help book works only if you use it! Deliberately seeking out situations that make you angry - not avoiding them - and acting in a new, non-agressive fashion, is key. Good luck!

Editorial Review:

The ever-escalating costs of anger are well documented: sabotaging careers, alienating friends and family, triggering illness, causing bodily harm. Written by two well-regarded experts in the field, The Anger Control Workbook introduces a new and radically simplified approach to anger control. Step-by-step exercises will aid readers in identifying, understanding, responding to, and ultimately coping with their hostile feelings. "Half the anger battle can be won by simply learning to relax the physical tension that develops in provocative situations. It's a proven fact that if you can relax your body, and keep it relaxed, it's almost impossible to get angry. Combating stress using the skills you're about to learn can help you calm down, think clearly, and handle any situation in an effective, positive way." - from the book

Great Books 5 out of 5 stars.

This book is fun and enjoyable while teaching young children when it is appropriate to speak. The pictures are a wonderful compliment to the storyline.

Editorial Review:

All of Louis’ thoughts are very important to him. In fact, his thoughts are so important to him that when he has something to say, his words begin to wiggle, and then they do the jiggle, then his tongue pushes all of his important words up against his teeth and he erupts, or interrupts others. His mouth is a volcano! My Mouth Is A Volcano takes an empathetic approach to the habit of interrupting and teaches children a witty technique to capture their rambunctious thoughts and words for expression at an appropriate time. Told from Louis’ perspective, this story provides parents, teachers, and counselors with an entertaining way to teach children the value of respecting others by listening and waiting for their turn to speak.

It All Became Clear... 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I started reading this book by accident - I was supposed to be passing it from one friend to another but glanced through the first few pages while brushing my teeth one night and was absolutely hooked! After 15 minutes polishing the same molar, my amused husband finally asked what I'd found. I found a book that explained in friendly, easy-to-read sections a whole bagful of puzzling behaviour *my* child had been exhibiting. It also gave some suggestions of things I could do to help our days just run that little more smoothly, some of which have subsequently become part of our routine. But I found the explanations most important because I finally began to understand some of my son's daily trials and tribulations from his perspective. Suddenly it became easier to do what all the more experienced parents were always telling me and "just relax" because I knew (a) my son couldn't help himself - and that was exactly on schedule for his age (b) how to help him. Of course, as I relaxed, he relaxed and we now share a much richer, closer relationship. I've subsequently bought the book and have returned to it in puzzlement a couple of times and I've never been disappointed. There's so much information there that I didn't realize what I'd glossed over because my child had not yet reached the age when... If you want to know *why* your toddler is behaving as he/she is, this is a great book for you.

Editorial Review:

Although there are any number of books that cover the physical and cognitive abilities of toddlers, Lieberman's is the first to offer an in-depth examination of the varied and intense emotional life of children from ages one to three. "An elegant book, filled with wonderful examples and clear insights."--T. Berry Brazelton, M.D. 31 photos.

Editorial Review:

In her most affirming and life-changing book yet, Dr. Harriet Lerner teaches us how to restore love and connection with the people who matter the most. In The Dance of Connection we learn what to say (and not say) when:

  • We need an apology, and the person who has harmed us won't apologize or be accountable.
  • We don't know how to take a conversation to the next level when we feel desperate.
  • We feel worn down by the other person's criticism, negativity, or irresponsible behavior.
  • We have been rejected or cut off, and the other person won't show up for the conversation.
  • We are struggling with staying or leaving, and we don't know our "bottom line."
  • We are convinced that we've tried everything -- and nothing changes.

Filled with compelling personal stories and case examples, Lerner outlines bold new "voice lessons" that show us how to speak with honor and personal integrity, even when the other person behaves badly.

Whether we're dealing with a partner, parent, sister, or best friend, The Dance of Connection teaches us how to navigate our most important relationships with clarity, courage, and joyous conviction.

Editorial Review:

In this compelling book, Elan Golomb identifies the crux of the emotional and psychological problems of millions of adults. Simply put, the children of narcissist -- offspring of parents whose interest always towered above the most basic needs of their sons and daughters -- share a common belief: They believe they do not have the right to exist.

The difficulties experienced by adult children of narcissists can manifest themselves in many ways: for examples, physical self-loathing that takes form of overeating, anorexia, or bulimia; a self-destructive streak that causes poor job performance and rocky personal relationships; or a struggle with the self that is perpetuated in the adult's interaction with his or her own children. These dilemmas are both common and correctable, Dr. Golomb tells us.

With an empathic blend of scholarship and case studies, along with her own personal narrative of her fight for self, Dr. Golomb plumbs the depths of this problem, revealing its mysterious hold on the affairs of otherwise bright, aware, motivated, and worthy people. Trapped in the Mirror explores.

  • the nature of the paralysis and lack of motivation so many adults feel
  • stress and its role in exacerbating childhood wrongs
  • why do many of our relationships seem to be "reruns" of the past
  • how one's body image can be formed by faulty parenting
  • how anger must be acknowledge to be overcome
  • and, most important, how even the most traumatized self can be healed.

Rooted in a profoundly humanist traditional approach, and suffused with the benefit of the latest knowledge about intrafamily relationships, Trapped in the Mirror offers more than the average self-help book; it is truly the first self-heal book for millions.

Hot Stuff is Hot Stuff 5 out of 5 stars.
21 of 21 people found this review helpful.

What a wonderful book. I read the reviews here before purchasing and my only reservation was with the "sarcastic" humor in the book. Actually, it is the humor that makes this book work. It was the bait that got my son hooked on the book.

I bought this for my 8 year-old son. He started to read it immediately. The book is a book and a workbook where you do some introspection. When he saw there were places to write down his responses, he ran and got a pencil. The first day he (we) spent nearly an hour reading and answering questions before we told him he needed to put it down and go to bed.

The book does a good job of validating the feelings that a child (actually all of us) has and gives great ways to deal with those responses. If you have ever encouraged your child to say "gooz fah bah" (from Anger Management the movie), then this is the book for you.

Editorial Review:

This book offers a unique approach to one of the most pressing problems of our time. Child psychologist, Dr. Jerry Wilde, speaks directly to children and adolescents in a language they can easily understand. Hot Stuff to Help Kids Chill Out is an empowering book designed to encourage today's youth to manage their anger rather than be controlled by it.
