Editorial Review:

You can feel it when it hits you. Your face flushes and your vision narrows. Your heartbeat increases as judgmental thoughts flood your mind. Your anger has been triggered, and you're about to say or do something that will likely make it worse.

You have an alternative. By practicing the Nonviolent Communication (NVC) process you can use that anger to serve a specific, life-enriching purpose. It tells you that you're disconnected from what you value and that your needs are not being met. Rather than managing your anger by suppressing your feelings or blasting someone with your judgments, Marshall Rosenberg shows you how to use anger to discover what you need, and then how to meet your needs in constructive ways.

This booklet will help you apply these four key truths:
- People or events may spark your anger but your own judgments are its cause
- Judging others as "wrong" prevents you from connecting with your unmet needs
- Getting clear about your needs helps you identify solutions satisfying to everyone
- Creating strategies focused on meeting your needs transforms anger into positive actions

Release the Past and create an Amazing Future 5 out of 5 stars.
18 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Like most people I bought Excuse me your Life is Waiting, read it and loved it. Then I bought the companion Playbook, took one look at all the exercises and let it gather dust on a book shelf. I already knew how to create goals, visualize what I wanted in my life and take action steps to create the jobs and situations I wanted. I did not need a new way to accomplish the same thing. But I also knew that I would always fall into a safe, comfy zone and stop doing anything once I got what I wanted. And that's when the trouble would begin.

This year it seems like everything came crashing down at once. For the first time in my life I had a life threatening illness that used up all my leave for year before the end of the summer. Then money seemed to disappear before it even made it to my bank account. And the job that I loved suddenly required 10 hour days, seven days a week support. I had no time for myself, family or friends.

I needed to take a different approach to my life. Just being reactive, charging in and taking action was just making me exhausted and often made the situation worse.

I dusted off Lynn's Playbook and decided to not just skim for the parts of my life I needed to fix first. I decided to take my time and do a few pages each day. This meant I had to turn off my TV and computer, and sit and pay attention to me. As an addicted multi-tasker this was very hard for me to do. It was also hard to admit that I had pushed and numbed down my feelings so that nothing upset me anymore.

I started setting aside an hour each night with the book and a big journal to do the exercises in, and decided to commit to the process. After the first week I noticed I could actually feel my emotions as they occurred instead of ignoring them. I was embarrassed to find out I was in a constant state of annoyance with my life, and even worse with everyone and everything around me.

I practiced each exercise in order and did the meditations. Each one builds on the next, so sometimes I repeated an exercise or meditation until I felt I really understood what I needed to know.

In about a week things started to change. My relationships with my family, friends, co-workers and especially my boss became happier and more relaxed. I know I was the one who changed. They were just responding to the new positive vibrations I was sending out, instead of the dark, annoying don't bother me with anything stupid signal I was sending before.

In about two weeks new ideas and new money began flowing in. I learned that if I approach a new goal or plan with confidence and faith, I was more likely to get a positive outcome. If I reacted to the situation with a whine and fear if I don't get this I am going to be out of a job, house, etc.; then I just got more lack in my life.

I have had continued success using this Playbook and now do one exercise or meditation as a weekly focus. My life has steadily improved and so has my ability to sense when I fear something so I can identify why I fear it and switch to a more positive emotion and solution to the issue. I have a long way to go, but I love the changes I am seeing in myself and my new world.

This Playbook helps you identify old habits that are holding you back, old issues and problems that no longer have meaning in your life and gives you positive ways to let them go so you can create the life you really want. And while some of the exercises may seem repetitive, Lynn is just trying to reinforce your new positive outlook on life.

Even if you do not believe in the Law of Attraction (you radiate what you attract via your emotions/feelings/thoughts), this book will help you create a more positive you.

If you want to try a new way of living, I strongly suggest this Playbook as a solo self improvement activity or as a touchstone for a self help group.

Editorial Review:

Human beings have evolved physically, socially, and technologically, but are unable to take the next step toward spiritual evolution because of self-defeating habits and conditioning - in short, we are our own victims. Lynn Grabhorn has taken the concepts that are making "Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting" such a success and transformed them into a complete workbook for empowerment. The clearly focused explanations, discussion material, meditations, and exercises are essential building blocks to a new way of being. Isn't it worth a little work to have the life you've always wanted?

·Based on the self-help sensation "Excuse Me, Your Life Is Waiting"

·Ideal for group or individual study

·Crosses the boundaries of age, gender, race, income, and religious belief

·A straight-shooting, carefully orchestrated program for self-improvement

Wisdom of the ages 4 out of 5 stars.
20 of 20 people found this review helpful.

This book condenses a lot of AA and Al-Anon thought into a few fast-reading pages. It contains many handy tools and techniques for managing difficult emotions and letting go of the need to control others.

I don't believe it's just for people in AA and Al-Anon. The wisdom in its pages is universal, although the constant references to AA and Al-Anon might put off an average reader.

I want to share this book with many people, to give them a taste of what serenity -- emotional independence -- feels like.

I highly recommend the book as a companion text to other program literature. It does not replace the Big Book or Paths to Recovery, but it condenses and clarifies a lot of age-old wisdom in a few easy-to-read pages.

Editorial Review:

And acceptance is the answer to all my problems... A.A. members know of Dr. Paul's wisdom through the often-quoted passage from his story in A.A.'s Big Book, Alcoholics Anonymous. Dr. Paul continues sharing his astute insight and gentle humor with discussions of the physical, mental, emotional, interpersonal and spiritual aspects of sobriety.

Like Your Own Psychologist! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

While I believe there is a time and place to see a shrink, there is also a time and place to get real with yourself and look deep within yourself to find the root of your problems.

In Finding Peace for Your Heart, Stormie shows us how vital a role God plays in our healing, and how important it is for us to be willing to look at the root of our problems. It's truly the first step towards healing and spiritual growth.

I read this book with great intensity, found areas in my life that the Lord wanted me to work on, and finished it feeling truly inspired to lean on God more.

EVERYONE's, women AND men, guide to emotional health! 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

I have read countless books for emotional healing. This is by far the best and probably the only one that needs to be read. Unfortunately, the subtitle of the book may turn men away from reading this book. This book is for everyone! For women AND men. Even for those who have not suffered abuse. We all have low points in our lives. This book will guide you through them.

Editorial Review:

In Finding Peace for Your Heart, Stormie Omartian offers presonal insight on emotional healing as she guides you to transforming your inner self. Join her on a personal journey as she walks you through issues such as recognizing that God is on your side and showing you how to live in obedience so that you can gain the wholeness you desire.

Understanding our Emotions 5 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I have been reading my doctors copy of SOS Help for Emotions. My wife is bi-polar and my son has Schizophrenia. This book has helped me to understand the self talk that we do to ourselves over a problem we face. Problems present themselves all the time, it is the self talk that we do that causes most of the problems with the solution. This book has helped me with both my wife and son's sickness because I can help them analize and improve thier self talk section of a problem to end with a more positive out look or one that is not as detrimental as they make it. What we think most of the times causes a problem to get worse than it should be, when we understand the problem and think it through in a positive way the out come of the problem is way less then what it could have been. I am not a doctor or psycologist, I'm just a family member that cares deeply for my family and want to make thier life less stressfull as I can.

Editorial Review:

If the onus on Emotional Lives of Animals author Marc Bekoff was simply to prove that nonhuman creatures exhibit Charles Darwin's six universal emotions (anger, happiness, sadness, disgust, fear, and surprise), then his book would be very brief. As anyone who has ever had a pet dog, cat, rabbit, or even bird can attest, animals not only possess such emotions but broadcast them clearly and often. Bekoff's goal, however, is much grander: To show that wild and domestic species have a kaleidoscopic range of feelings, from embarrassment to awe, and that we dismiss them not only at their peril but our own. And if an endorsement squib by PETA president Ingrid Newkirk and Foreword by renowned animal scientist Jane Goodall doesn't give it away, then readers quickly learn that Bekoff also has an agenda: showing that using animals for scientific experiments, amusement, food, and the like is reprehensible and unconscionable.

Not that The Emotional Lives of Animals is a polemic. By turns funny, anecdotal, and deeply researched, the book is all the more persuasive because it's so compelling. As Bekoff (professor emeritus of biology at the University of Colorado) points out, "It's bad biology to argue against the existence of animal emotions. Scientific research in evolutionary biology, cognitive ethology, and social neuroscience supports the view that numerous and diverse animals have rich and deep emotional lives. Emotions have evolved as adaptations in numerous species, and they serve as a social glue to bond animals with one another." And with us, as Bekoff argues in this absorbing and important book. -- Kim Hughes

Some good advice 3 out of 5 stars.
5 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Just like any other parenting book, you'll have to take what's helpful and leave the rest. I want to stress that I did find a FEW very helpful parenting suggestions in this book. If you're thinking about reading this book just be aware that it has a fairly strong religious tone. A great read for someone seeking faith- based parenting views. One to skip for someone who just wants a parenting book!

It was just what I needed in my life at the time. I read it twice and highlighted areas that were important to me. I passed it on to a friend.

Editorial Review:

In this understanding and supportive guide, renowned writer, lecturer, and counselor Earnie Larsen lays out a new strategy for identifying and facing up to our underground reservoirs of resentment and rage and moving beyond them to forgiveness. Gently, patiently, he teaches us that we can learn how to reclaim the power that anger has over us, and restablish relationships and rebuild bridges that might have been burned--as we move forward toward a new serenity and understanding of ourselves, and the hidden needs that have kept us stuck and helpless.

A Masterpiece! 5 out of 5 stars.
14 of 14 people found this review helpful.

For people who have been wronged and struggle with negative, consuming emotions, this title is the one to read. Smedes describes in great detail what it means to forgive, and that the benefit is not to the one forgiven, but to the one forgiving. His words here are like a long, cool drink of water to a soul parched from hatred, bitterness and animosity. There is great healing power in forgiveness, and Smedes harnesses that power in this book as few other authors have done.

Editorial Review:

When a heinous act is committed, sometimes one wonders if forgiveness is even possible. Lewis B. Smedes would certainly advise it. "When we forgive," he says, "we set a prisoner free and discover that the prisoner we set free is us." In an easy-to-read yet astute analysis of the meaning and value of forgiveness, Smedes teaches the reader that more than anything, forgiveness is a way of healing. He takes as his model the Judeo-Christian God and outlines the many subtleties involved in forgiveness, such as distinguishing anger from hate, and noting that we only forgive those we blame (including ourselves). Forgetting may be more difficult, but at least The Art of Forgiving can help us along the path toward release and healing.

Editorial Review:

To delve into the subject of love with relational psychologist Stephen A. Mitchell is to race headfirst into an enormous haystack with a kid who's intent on finding not one, but probably a dozen, needles. In Can Love Last? Mitchell's boyish curiosity and profound intelligence virtually set fire to the subject, both enlightening and challenging his readers. Mitchell's premise is that romance, in its many forms, is key to a life worth living.

Why, then, does the sizzle so often fizzle, especially in committed relationships? More importantly, what forces compel humans to actively douse romantic flames in favor of more "stable" love? Mitchell's probings of these and other questions take him on a fascinating journey through times and topics historical as well as contemporary. From Plato to Freud, Homer to Kris Kristofferson, Mitchell weaves history, philosophy, literature, and (of course) psychology into a surprisingly sensible pattern. Yes, a few loud threads stand out, including his well-supported theory that "stable" love is actually much riskier than romance. But over all, differing theories on love and desire, stability and adventure, or surrender and control find more parallels than crossroads under Mitchell's tender care, making this book an intellectual gift to the masses. --Liane Thomas
