Finally, it all makes sense! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 8 people found this review helpful.

I'm an elementary ed teacher, a certified massage therapist specializing in pregnancy/infant massage, and a day care provider. Our second daughter is just 7 weeks old. Following a traumatic birth and two weeks in NICU, she's been quite a challenge. She has a few developmental delays, cannot suck or swallow, and is fed exclusively via a naso-gastric tube, which causes severe reflux. Everything in her behavior screamed COLIC, and it was obvious she was miserable! Even with all my education and experience, I felt like a failure, unable to help my daughter. Her Occupational Therapist suggested that she was overstimulated and verging on neurological distress. I began researching and trying to find anything and everything I could about newborn sensory input and "Sensory Integration." I checked out "The Self-Calmed Baby" and began reading it, hoping it wouldn't be a "cry it out" book. It is anything but that. In just two days, I have seen dramatic improvement in my daughter's behavior. She's been telling me all along that she's in distress, and I just didn't understand what she was saying. Now that I understand her "language," I can comfort her and most importantly, help her comfort herself. She has cried only about 20 minutes in the past two days, and I actually slept 5 hours at a stretch last night. I won't call it a miracle, but our lives have certainly changed. The only thing I didn't like about the book was his lack of knowledge about the benefits of breastfeeding. Formula is *not* as good as breastmilk, and research backs it up. However, his attitudes about the feeding situation were very balanced - it's a social situation, not just a nutrition situation. The message of the book is that your child has the ability to communicate with you and calm herself - just pay attention and follow through with what your baby is telling you.

Editorial Review:

“Eat Different without Seeming Different”.
Help for Children Who Can't Eat Wheat, Gluten, Dairy, Eggs, Corn, Soy, or Nuts.

That’s the goal of this positive, upbeat guide to helping families with allergic or celiac children––and the children's caregivers––manage food sensitivities to wheat, dairy, eggs, corn, peanuts, soy, and other common food allergens.

Written by a mother whose child can't eat wheat or dairy, this book offers practical advice for families of allergic or celiac children, including:

• Latest research and discoveries on food sensitivities

• Advice on reading labels, grocery shopping, and eating out

• Tips on emotional, social, and psychological considerations so your child doesn't feel set apart from others by his food sensitivities

• Pointers to help your child enjoy parties, field trips, and outings

• How to avoid hidden food allergens (Did you know that licorice contains wheat?)

• 100 kid-tested & approved recipes that make your child's food look and taste just like everyone else's

• Plus valuable cooking advice on successfully using substitutes for wheat, gluten, dairy, or eggs. (For example, did you know that flaxseed meal boiled in water makes a great egg substitute in baking?)

• Extensive resources such as mail-order addresses for hard-to-find ingredients, Internet sites, and discussion groups.

The end result is one convenient, easy-to-read, resource-filled volume gleaned from parents of food-sensitive children around the world––as well as the children themselves, who have found that a diet that doesn’t make them sick shouldn’t make them feel different, either.

Boost your child's brain power! 5 out of 5 stars.
29 of 32 people found this review helpful.

With over 150 delicious recipes, you will want to try some of these recipes for yourself. Kids and adults alike will enjoy recipes for Berry Delight drinks or chicken patties in a soft tortilla. There are appealing and quick alternatives to fast food and non-nutritious snacks.

The authors Michael van Straten and Barbara Griggs have experience in the area of nutrition. Michael van Straten is a well-known medicine practitioner in the UK and is a practicing naturopath and nutritional consultant. Barbara Griggs has been studying and writing about complementary medicine for the past 25 years and is the health editor of Country Living magazine.

In this collection, you will find weekly menu plans for every stage of childhood, from conception to the teenage years. An interesting link between diet and allergies, behavioral problems and eating disorders is also helpful for parents dealing with these complex issues.

Nutritious food is now possible with Superfoods for Children. Delicious nourishing dishes can be made for your child to encourage healthy eating habits. There is a comprehensive guide to 130 top ingredients that form the building blocks of healthy eating for children. Vegetables, fruits, dairy products, grains, nuts and seeds, meats, fish, herbs and oils are then used in delicious recipes.

They do say that butter is better than margarine...ok, they get 5 stars just for that comment! I also appreciated the extra section on "Danger Foods." These are foods which used to be occasional treats but have now become part of our children's everyday eating. The authors explain why these foods are not healthy and in detail! I guess some of the items they discuss are not good for adults either.

Some recipes serve 4-6, while others serve 1 or 2. If you are at home cooking for your children, you will not have to make another meal for yourself. Overall, a very well organized book with some wonderful information for special food problems. With so much hyperactivity and children who find it hard to concentrate, parents might find their children become calmer after cooking for them at home and following nutritional guidelines. Studies were conducted which showed dramatic improvements in behavior within a week of being on a monitored diet.

Editorial Review:

Few American children go to bed hungry but millions are malnourished by even the most modest nutritional standards. Recommending 100 super foods and offering over 150 tempting, nutritious, and easy recipes, this book is the answer for caring parents who are short on time.

Best Baby book ever! 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I recently read this book during my pregnancy, having read other books like, "What to expect when you're expecting", and the Mayo Clinic Guide, and this was the best book out of all of the books I have read. I found it well-organized, concise, easy to understand, and extremely informative. I highly recommend it to any expectant mother or father!

Helpful hints and common sense ideas 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a great baby book (and I'm not just biased because I'm one of the baby models in it!). There are plenty of helpful facts and ideas, as well as a lot of useful how-to.

Other Considerations 5 out of 5 stars.

As background material for this book, the reader is referred to "The Scientist in the Crib" (Dr. Gopnik, et al; Perrenial, 2001). It offers a fresh and detailed evaluation of the language acquisition process by infants. At about 6 months of age, a critical change seems to occur. The specific pronunciation patterns of the language(s) heard begin to be retained in a very focused manner. Also see "The Monday Tape" (The Snow Water Corporation) at Akilo.com for more insight into this process. This audio tape, one of a series, provides multilingual speech patterns for infants. These tapes are available exclusively through Amazon.com (not available in stores). It appears that they should help an infant (birth to age 2) gain good pronunciation skills for many widely used languages.

Editorial Review:

The "Better Homes and Gardens New Baby Book" combines old-fashioned wisdom with the latest information on caring for and nurturing one's child from birth to age three. With advice from the nation's leading obstetricians, pediatricians, and child-care experts, this indispensable guide also includes practical tips from mothers nationwide.

Great Addition to Your Baby Book Library! 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

This book is an easy read and well written. I wouldn't buy it as your only infant feeding reference, but I do consider it a must-have. As the parent of an infant with gastro reflux, I especially recommend it for other reflux parents -as this book is written by a pediatric gastroenterologist who doesn't skip over reflux in a quick, brief paragraph like other baby books. I do appreciate Dr. Vartabedian's inclusion of details such as the minimum calories needed per day by weight (though he does discourage calorie counting!). One extremely interesting part of the book is where he discusses low-iron formulas. After 6 mos., about 27 oz. of formula a day meets an infant's daily iron requirements whereas an infant on a low-iron formula would need 83 oz in one day to fulfill the body'd iron needs. -This is great info to tell your mother-in-laws who claim that your baby's digestive problems or gas are iron-related and insist on a formula switch. This is a book that you do not have to read cover-to-cover. You can simply go to the section appliable to your baby. The index is very comprehensive as well. An over all good book.

Editorial Review:

Parents ask pediatricians more questions about feeing than just a bout any other topic. So Bryan Vartabedian, M.D., a pediatrician gastroenterologist, and a father himself, has decided the time is right for a guide to feeding your child during the vital first years. He offers authoritive, up-to-date diet guidelines for all children from newborns to pre-schoolers, and sound answers to essential feeding questions based on the experiences of real-life parents.

"Feed Your Kids Well offers a sensible approach to the difficult problem of childhood obesity--and many other children's health problems. Dr. Pescatore provides parents with excellent strategies for dealing with their children in a positive, sensitive way."--Carol Colman, coauthor of the New York Times bestseller The Melatonin Miracle.

"Feed Your Kids Well is an excellent book that explains the importance of a well-balanced diet. It exposes the dangers associated with high-sugar foods and reveals the true cause of childhood obesity."--Joyce and Gene Daoust, authors of 40-30-30 Fat Burning Nutrition.

"I helped nutritionally vet Adelle Davis's book, Let's Have Healthy Children. In my opinion, Feed Your Kids Well replaces that important work."--Fran Gare, nutrition expert, CBS-TV.

Today, one-third of North American children and teenagers are overweight. And despite decades of medical and scientific breakthroughs, the percentage of children with health problems today is the highest in history.

Feed Your Kids Well will be a revelation for millions of worried parents. Dr. Fred Pescatore, who was overweight and asthmatic as a child, brings an empathetic and hopeful tone to this groundbreaking guide to achieving optimum nutrition, ideal health, and self-confidence.

Building on the low-carbohydrate principles of the hugely popular Dr. Atkins' New Diet Revolution--which has helped millions of adults lose weight permanently--Dr. Pescatore applies the Atkins Center's proven nutritional program to children and teenagers. Thoroughly tested over years of exhaustive research, his Next Generation Diet is the first health program to recognize that simply applying adult diet plans to children is ineffective--and often dangerous. The author argues that the real culprit behind dietary problems is not fat, but sugars and starches. Feed Your Kids Well brings something new to the table: sane and practical guidance for parents concerned not only about weight loss, but also about general wellness and the prevention of disease--from asthma to ADD, from earaches to allergies.

After explaining how your child's body and metabolism work, Dr. Pescatore clearly outlines a straightforward nutritional lifestyle program that helps parents shape the important building blocks--proteins, fats, and carbohydrates--into complete, well-balanced meals. Packed with easy-to-follow sample menus for every day of the week, this book provides delicious, healthy alternatives. Kids will love the dozens of simple, step-by-step recipes for a variety of dishes, including pancakes with strawberry topping, chicken fingers, beef tacos, fudgy brownie squares, and peanut butter cookies. Some recipes are easy enough for kids to make themselves!

Parents will also learn how to integrate effective nutrition with various vitamin supplements, complementary medical treatments, and a regular exercise program, which can help heal and even prevent childhood ailments. With fascinating case studies, Dr. Pescatore demonstrates how to treat these problems simply by monitoring nutrient deficiencies and sugar overload.

In childhood, the all-important seeds of our adult selves are planted--from our personalities to our eating habits. Feed Your Kids Well helps parents prepare their children for healthy, happy lives.
