Editorial Review:

We've been inundated lately with books and articles about childhood obesity. Most offer cultural critique or nutrition and exercise advice — in tones that are alternately appalled and patronizing. Few address the psychological, medical, cultural and developmental complexities affecting overweight kids. The truth is, many parents already know that Whoppers are fattening. What they don't know is how to effectively help an often discouraged, often reluctant kid on what will be a difficult, life-long journey.

Abby Ellin, a journalist and former fat-camper whose parents' attempts to "save her" from fatness proved counterproductive, has had a lifelong interest in figuring out how they might have done it better, and an abiding compassion for overweight kids. In Teenage Waistland she shares the story of her own adolescent struggle with food and weight, and journeys with hope, skepticism, and humor through the landscape of today's diet culture. She visits camps and community programs, and talks to experts, kids and their parents, seeking to answer these questions: What can parents say that kids will hear? Why don't kids exercise more and eat less when they're dying to be thinner? What treatment methods actually work? Willpower, or surrender? Shame, or inspiration?

Teenage Waistland is ultimately clarifying and provocative for anyone who's ever wrestled with weight issues. One size does not fit all when it comes to weight loss, and the better we understand that, the more likely we are to be able to help our kids.

Terrific! 5 out of 5 stars.

Turning Lead Into Gold was a book I couldn't put down! It opened my eyes to lead and other metals that are harmful to us all. Nancy goes into great detail about the harmful effects of toxic metals and what you can do to prevent it. She also goes into how to treat lead poisoning. I bought this book because my son has an elevated lead level but I am recommended it to everyone I know! Because of all the facts in this book about metal poisoning I am getting my whole family tested.

Editorial Review:

Nancy Hallaway's life was turned upside down when her infant twins were diagnosed as hyperactive with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and severe autistic tendencies. While searching for answers, and help for her children, she never imagined that the cause of their condition lay in their own pleasant suburban backyard.

Then Nancy met Dr. Zigurts Strauts, the first doctor to suggest that her children might be suffering from heavy metal poisoning. Dr. Strauts found high levels of lead, arsenic, aluminum, and cadmium in their bodies, and his treatments lead to immediate improvement in both children.

Hallaway and Strauts have written this book to help other parents whose children may be showing symptoms of autism or ADD, or whose development is delayed, because of metal poisoning.

Complete, up to date nutrition for your little one 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 7 people found this review helpful.

"What Should I Feed My Baby" is an excellent resource for parents, incorporating the latest advances in nutrition (glycemic index, omega 3 fatty acids, probiotics) in an easy to read format.

We have been supplementing our son's diet with flax and vitaminc C on the book's recommendation, and that has noticably cut down his day care sniffles.

The recipes she provides cover everything from purees for young babies to healthy stews for older babies, and they are not difficult to prepare.

The book is British, so some of the recommended products will be hard to find in the states.

Editorial Review:

All parents want the best for their children, but when it comes to food, it is hard to know how to deliver the best options. This book gives clear and balanced advice on how to deal with problems, and answers questions on eating habits and diet which crop up for every parent. Meal planners are included to help with the daunting task of weaning onto solids and recipes are provided to correspond to all stages of development.

If you read only one book on vaccination, this is it! 5 out of 5 stars.

Both sides of the vaccination controversy are presented here. Parents can make a more informed choice on vaccinating or nor vaccinating their children after reading this book.

Reasoned voice in the emotional debate 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 11 people found this review helpful.

Most of the articles I read on vaccination are very emotional - they are either pro or against it. They make the decision making process of a new parent even harder. This book has a reasoned, less combative tone. It presents opinions as well as information from both side of the debate. I found it educational and helpful.

an eye opener 5 out of 5 stars.
9 of 10 people found this review helpful.

I recommend this book to every parent and parent to be as well as health care professionals, especially pediatricians. It is an eye opener about the issue of vaccinations. The presentation of the issue is very well rounded. It provides sections on:

1. the childhood diseases against which the routine vaccinations are given 2. the opinions of the health care professionals on the vaccinations themselves 3. the experiences of parents with vaccinations 4. guidelines on how to gather information about vaccination exemptions and alternative "treatments".

I strongly recommend it. All parents owe to get informed about vaccinations. God the Almighty entrusted our children to us and we need to care for them with knowledge, and pray for the best.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive collection of articles, research, references and resources challenging the conventional viewpoint on vaccinations. Contributors include physicians, public health workers, and parents. For anyone who is personally or professionally concerned about mandatory vaccinations.
