Protecting your children from the many perils lurking in today's world is bound to be one of your top priorities.
But some of the most insidious threats to their well-being are those you can't see and may not even be aware of -- and that your kids are quite apt to be regularly exposed to at home, at play and at school.

Chemical-Free Kids is your guide to the whereabouts of these invisible dangers -- the toxic substances that permeate our food and environment -- as well as to strategies that can enable you to keep them from doing irreparable harm to your family.

In this highly informative yet reader-friendly book, you'll learn the identity and characteristics of the chemical culprits hiding in processed and conventionally-grown food, either in the form of poisonous residues left over from pesticide applications or as additives intended to preserve it or disguise its flavor and appearance. You'll also be given an overview of the health hazards to your children posed by all manner of household and garden products, from air fresheners to lawn sprays. You'll find out why government watchdogs have been so lax about regulating or banning these hazardous substances and what steps you can take to gradually eliminate them from your family's environment.

This book will also provide you with highly workable plans for introducing your kids to a healthier lifestyle, for making your child's school safe from toxic sprays, and for weaning your kids off junk food and winning them over to nutritious, unadulterated meals and snacks. It even offers dozens of recipes to help you detoxify your family's diet -- including some especially geared to kids with allergies to certain kinds of foods.

The wealth of essential information and advice you'll gain from reading "Chemical-Free Kids" includes:

* How you can phase out products that contain harmful additives and replace them with healthier ones -- including the ten best foods for children -- without disrupting your lifestyle.
* How detoxifying your child's diet can prevent or limit food allergies and sensitivities.
* Why artificial sweeteners (especially aspartame) should be avoided.
* How you can give your baby a priceless gift by limiting your exposure to toxic substances during pregnancy.
Non-toxic pest-control techniques, and other easy and convenient methods for maintaining a chemical-free home environment.
* How to avoid the life-threatening hazard posed by a deadly nerve gas in widespread domestic use as a "fumigant."
* The various reasons that organically grown foods are so important to your family's health.
* The twin menaces of lead and mercury exposure -- and how you can keep these extremely toxic and nerve-damaging heavy metals from harming your child's development.

Editorial Review:

Vegan and Raw Recipes, simple and delicious

This little book contains the recipes that have thrilled Jennifer's friends for years. Regarding her meals and treats, many have said, "If I could eat like this everyday, I'd happily become vegan." Although Jennifer happens to be vegan and enjoy a mostly raw diet, this book is not about how raw or vegan food is better. There is no dogma, just simple delicious recipes and the philosophy that food grown, prepared and shared with love is the most nutritious and healing. A quote from Glenda Green's book Love with End, says it all, "Vegetarian ideals should not be prematurely forced on people who are not ready for them. It is far more important that people awaken in their own hearts and incline in that direction as they look for greater health. In the meantime, you will benefit more by gratitude and appreciation for those who have bestowed the bounties of life on you. For I assure you, it is not by food that you are nourished, but by love."

The book includes recipes for: Dips, Spreads, and Sauces, Appetizers, Soups, Salads and Salad Dressings, Main Dishes, Cookies and Crackers and Raw Desserts. The reader is well-prepared for ease and success with an introduction to some potentially new ingredients common to raw and vegan food preparation and a section on essential kitchen supplies. The recipes are easy to follow, simple and surprisingly rich in flavor, texture and heartiness.

Terrific! 5 out of 5 stars.

Turning Lead Into Gold was a book I couldn't put down! It opened my eyes to lead and other metals that are harmful to us all. Nancy goes into great detail about the harmful effects of toxic metals and what you can do to prevent it. She also goes into how to treat lead poisoning. I bought this book because my son has an elevated lead level but I am recommended it to everyone I know! Because of all the facts in this book about metal poisoning I am getting my whole family tested.

Editorial Review:

Nancy Hallaway's life was turned upside down when her infant twins were diagnosed as hyperactive with attention deficit disorder (ADD) and severe autistic tendencies. While searching for answers, and help for her children, she never imagined that the cause of their condition lay in their own pleasant suburban backyard.

Then Nancy met Dr. Zigurts Strauts, the first doctor to suggest that her children might be suffering from heavy metal poisoning. Dr. Strauts found high levels of lead, arsenic, aluminum, and cadmium in their bodies, and his treatments lead to immediate improvement in both children.

Hallaway and Strauts have written this book to help other parents whose children may be showing symptoms of autism or ADD, or whose development is delayed, because of metal poisoning.

Editorial Review:

End the Food Wars!

Do you feel as if you're running a restaurant instead of cooking dinner for a family? Are you tired of dumping plates of uneaten food in the garbage? Then you must read Coping with a Picky Eater. This fresh, practical, and realistic guide explains to parents how they can avoid mealtime battles with kids aged one to six years, using sensible strategies that will establish a lifetime of healthful eating habits.

With cases ranging from the toddler who eats only peanut butter and jelly on white bread to the six-year-old who insists on scrambled eggs and cheese at every meal, pediatrician William G. Wilkoff, M.D., has been counseling picky eaters and their concerned parents for more than twenty years. Debunking common myths and soothing parents' fears, Dr. Wilkoff covers such practical matters as:

  • providing appropriate nutritional guidelines for youngsters one to six, including serving sizes;
  • dealing with nutritional saboteurs -- from indulgent grandparents to accommodating (or impatient) caregivers;
  • resisting the temptation to "whip up" special orders that disrupt family meals and give the picky eater control over the family dynamic.

Dr. Wilkoff shows that by establishing reasonable rules when children are young, parents can not only eliminate daily fights about food, but also reduce the possibility of eating disorders later in life.

Simply great, practical book for making family food. 4 out of 5 stars.
17 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I originally bought this book because *I* am the CANDY monster in my family. My kids are nearly as bad. The book is great for for the whole family, with practical, easy-to-make and delicious recipes. I've been a big Lansky fan ever since I became a parent and started getting her books from the library. This one is probably the best one I've read to date, with concise, humorous, and informative passages and tried and true food ideas. Highly recommended!

Great for kids of all ages! 5 out of 5 stars.

I've had my copy since it was first published, about 30 years, & just bought a copy for a young mom I know. Really assists in making good food choices regardless of age. My first husband was a real ding-dong addict & this helped to eliminate that, adding in nutritious calories instead of empty ones. A must for every parent, grandparent or those who just want to increase the nutritional value of what they consume. The baking additive recipe alone is worth the money, a real bargain!

Editorial Review:

It's been 20 years since Vicki Lansky's cookbook first hit the New York Times bestseller list. In this new edition, Lansky provides less sugary desserts, tasty alternatives to junk food snacks, and easy meals to please even the pickiest eaters.

Perfect medical records book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Perfect for simple medical records keeping. Covers all periods of your child's growth, from pregnancy to adulthood. Includes a section at the end for recording the health of all close relatives.

Too small for recording info 1 out of 5 stars.

Would not recommend this book. It is a very small and cheap paperback and you can not possibly use it to record any info as designed.

Out of Date! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I ordered this book to track my newborn's immunizations. Upon receiving the book, I realized that the section for tracking these does not include the current vaccine schedule recommended by the CDC, but rather only select ones. I would not waste money on a book that is not up to date!
