An excellent introduction to the use of homeopathic medicine for infants and children. Includes comments on vaccination for those interested in alternatives. Editorial Review:

At first glance, Sugar Busters for Kids looks like a no-no. Aren't we supposed to encourage healthy eating but avoid putting our children on diets? However, if you can bring yourself to look past the hype, what you'll find here is actually a fairly sensible family eating plan that aims to improve overall health with the same changes recommended by your own family doctor: more whole grains, fruits, and vegetables, and less animal fat and sugar, no matter what form that sugar takes.

The program revolves around the glycemic index of food, which is defined as "a measure of how carbohydrates differ in their ability to elevate blood sugars and insulin levels after they are digested." Foods with low glycemic indexes like whole wheat, black beans, milk, and cherries are encouraged, while rice noodles, corn flakes, and potatoes have high numbers and should be avoided.

Much of the book is devoted to scary statistics about the health of children worldwide. Busy parents might be wise to skip these chapters and focus on the practical matters of how to change their family's daily habits. The basic plan offers plenty of good guidelines along with meal-planning ideas, suggestions for portion control, "phasing in" new foods, and making exercise a fun family activity.

Most of us have heard that more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains improve overall health. If your family needs more specific guidelines to follow through on dietary changes, Sugar Busters for Kids may be just the ticket. --Jill Lightner

Infants should NOT be sleeping throught the night! 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

a 9 week old sleeping through the night? Not likely. They have small stomachs and still need to eat frequently. I read a book that said that even 9 month olds still need to sometimes eat in the nighttime. Why is our society so eager to push independence in infants? They are only babies for a short while. Why do we want to rush that? Babies will sleep when they are ready to sleep. The only "Sleep problems" created our by these books that make parents feel that if their 3 week old is not sleeping 10 hours that they have created a monster! Babies were not designed to sleep all night. They need to eat!
Even Adults can't always make it all night without a drink of water! Why the heck should we deny infants this?

Editorial Review:

Few sounds are more disconcerting than that of a crying infant unable or unwilling to go to sleep. The sound is particularly distressing in the middle of the night when the parents know that the baby - and what they - need is sleep. Nor is the problem limited to babies. Many families endure months or even years of insomnia because of their children's habitual lack of sleep. The consequences for the parents' health, well-being, enjoyment of their children, and in some cases the health of relationships and working lives, are considerable. This book provides a sensible, no-nonsense guide to how babies sleep and why they cry. It shows how this knowledge can be applied in practical ways to help the normal, healthy baby to establish sleeping patterns that will improve its life and benefit the entire family. The process is not always easy, but following this program means that a good night's sleep may no longer be an impossible dream.

A "real life" guide to managing diabetes in children. 5 out of 5 stars.
15 of 15 people found this review helpful.

This book contains the most common sense, practical information I have found yet for helping manage my toddlers diabetes. This is not a medical text, but an easy to read guide for managing insulin, meals and the behavioral problems related to diabetes. There are excellent suggestions on how to not let the behavioral problems develop. I highly recommend this "down to earth" book

Sweet Indeed! 5 out of 5 stars.

A wonderful book that took me through the hurdles when my grandson was first diagnosed. I referred to it again when researching my own book about type 1. I recommend it highly.

A Lifesaver 5 out of 5 stars.

A good choice for vegetarian parents 3 out of 5 stars.
8 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Gordon, a pediatrician from Malibu, California, covers this book with endorsements from some of the celebrity parents of his patients (among them Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman, Michael J. Fox and Tracy Pollan.)

What this book doesn't tell you on the cover is that it advocates a vegetarian diet for children. Which isn't bad in and of itself, but if you're looking for a more general childhood nutrition book you may want to include another book on your list.

There is a section of good vegetarian recipes in the back, and a plan to help your family eliminate meat and dairy products from its diet.

Prevention is better than seeking a cure 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I found this book easy to read. It answers a lot of questions and is well researched. It advocates a vegetarian diet and explains why meats and dairy products are unhealthy.

If you genuinely want to ensure your childs future health, then this book is a must. If more parents fed their children this way and opened up their minds to an alternative and healthier way of eating, there would be far fewer sugar addicts bouncing around.

There are several recipes at the end of the book, and a sample list of items to buy for stocking your pantry.
