Editorial Review:

1995 Margaret Mead Award winner! This personal account by a biocultural anthropologist illuminates important, not-soon-forgotten messages involving the more sobering aspects of conducting fieldwork among malnourished children in West Africa. With nutritional anthropology at its core, Dancing Skeletons presents informal, engaging and oftentimes dramatic stories from the field that relate the author's experiences conducting research on infant feeding and health in Mali. Through fascinating vignettes and honest, vivid descriptions, Dettwyler explores such diverse topics as ethnocentrism, culture shock, population control, breastfeeding, child care, the meaning of disability and child death in different cultures, female circumcision, women's roles in patrilineal societies, the dangers of fieldwork, and the realities involved in researching emotionally draining topics. Readers will alternately laugh and cry as they meet the author's friends and informants, follow her through a series of encounters with both peri-urban and rural Bambara culture, and struggle with her as she attempts to reconcile her very different roles as objective ethnographer, subjective friend, and mother in the field.

Comment on Jaundice and breastfeeding 2 out of 5 stars.
26 of 30 people found this review helpful.

HI, I was just browsing through this book online and I came across the paragraph on jaundice and breastfeeding. This information was supremely inaccurate on this particular subject. The book says that breastfeeding makes jaundice worse and that you will have to stop nursing for your child to be cured of it. I am a very well read La Leche league member and breastfeeding is well known to reverse jaundice by helping your baby to excrete the bilirubin build up. The more often you nurse the faster your baby gets rid of the dead red blood cells. It is the best treatment for jaundice despite was this book says. Stopping brestfeeding during the crucial first weeks is dangerous for your baby's nutrition and immunity and bad for mom in terms of losing your milk supply and suffering engorgement or mastitis. Other than that topic I didn't read the rest of the book so it may otherwise be a good book.

FABULOUS book... 5 out of 5 stars.

We love this book. Except for the oysters (my kids just don't get into the texture), we follow everything on this book and our kids are SO MUCH healthier than their friends. They eat better at home AND they make healthier choices when they go to parties/events, as they are not used to so much sugar! I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking to help their kids improve their immunity through diet.

great book 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I have had this book on my wish list for ages but couldn't justify another whole foods cookbook. I decided to try it after it was updated and after reading the authors essay on how we create picky eaters, I am glad I did. The recipes I have tried have been simple to make and taste delicious. The ingredients called for are easily found. I especially liked the lunch section as I struggle with packing my son a lunch. The book also has a nice section on nutrition that is helpful and informative for those new to whole foods cooking. I recommend this book to anyone looking for delicious meals for their families.

Editorial Review:

Feeding the Whole Family starts with the basics of creating a whole foods diet, from understanding grains and beans to determining what meats are acceptable to eat. Author Cynthia Lair then applies these lessons to cooking for young children and babies aged six months and older. She explains how to adapt each recipe separately for both children's and adults' palates. This updated edition includes the most current nutritional research along with 65 delicious new recipes, including meat dishes.

A must have if your child struggles at meals! 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I must first say that I am the mother of a little boy that has struggled with eating since the age of 1 (he's now 3 1/2). I must also say that the feeding team that wrote this book helped us when no one else would or could. We owe them so much...thank you!

If your child struggles with mealtime...this is the only book you need! It's fabulous! It's easy to read and written for parents to understand.
I love the short stories in the book because they help the parent realize that they are not the only ones struggling with this issue. There are also great "Did You Know" sections every couple of pages that give great advice and tips. Also, the authors have provided a glossary in the book to outline the terms/conditions that you may not be familiar with.

Lastly, they have given so many example diagrams of food chaining, a process developed by author Cheri Fraker, that tells the parent exactly where to start and where to go next with the foods that your child will eat.

Dealing with eating difficulties is challenging and it's easy to get off track...I'm so glad that I purchased this book because it's a great guide to have on hand and to keep you focused on what to do and what not to do, whether you are just starting out with food chaining or whether you're an "ol' pro!"

Kudos to you all! Fantastic book!

Editorial Review:

Initially developed by co-author Cheri Fraker in the course of treating an eleven-year-old who ate nothing but peanut butter, bread, and milk, Food Chaining is a breakthrough approach for dealing with picky eating and feeding problems at any age. Food Chaining emphasizes the relationship between foods in regard to taste, temperature, and texture. In Food Chaining, the internationally known feeding team behind this unique method shows how to help your child enjoy new and nutritious foods, no matter what the nature of his picky eating. The guide also includes information on common food allergies, improving eating skills, advice specific to special needs kids, and a pre-chaining program to help prevent food aversions before they develop. Food Chaining will help you raise a lifelong healthy eater.

Editorial Review:

The first scientifically proven, effective, all-natural nutritional alternative to the much-prescribed drug Ritalin Attention deficit disorder is a nutritional deficiency, not a psychological condition. This is the revolutionary discovery Marcia Zimmerman made during her ten years of research as a nutritional biochemist. That conclusion led her to develop a diet that addresses the specific needs of the 17 million adults and children suffering from ADD. Her easy-to-follow thirty-day plan has been proven just as effective as Ritalin in relieving the symptoms of ADD.

Learn:
- How women should boost their nutrition before conception to prevent ADD in their children.
- Why boys are much likelier to be tagged as ADD than girls
- How to get a reliable ADD diagnosis Reasons why parents prefer a diet plan to prescription drugs for ADD children
- The effects of brain allergies on attention span
- Foods to avoid that may exacerbate ADD
- Fats and oils we all need to stay focused
- Calming effects of carbohydrates
- Concentration-enhancing protein
- Why to stay away from simple sugars
- The dangers of artificial food ingredients, and much more

This important book will help us curb the epidemic growth of ADD in this country and change the way we treat those who have it now by addressing its source instead of merely treating its symptoms.

trying to find a book about the impact a 2nd child will have on your family? 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I wasn't overly impressed by any of the ones I saw, so I dug this out instead, figuring I could at least get a little heads up on what to expect in terms of nursing (like everyone else posting reviews, I've got a nursing toddler and am pregnant; having gotten thru the worst of the soreness, I don't expect weaning soon). In the event, this book offers a nice overview of other impacts on the family of adding a new baby to the mix: sleep issues, routines, keeping the toddler happy while the newborn has you fully occupied, etc. And unlike some of the other second-child books, this one is firmly focused on attachment parenting/co-sleeping/extended nursing/etc.

Flowers' narrative voice is pleasant without wasting your time. As with all too many books about breastfeeding, the format is a little large for holding comfortably while nursing. The voices of many, many mothers who have Already Been There are included within a structure that lets you look up an answer to a question you have quickly.

Editorial Review:

There is no doubt about it—when breastfeeding and pregnancy overlap, the questions abound! In this, the first full-length book ever on the topic of tandem nursing, Hilary Flower gives comprehensive and in-depth answers to a wide range of questions related to breastfeeding during pregnancy and tandem nursing.

Drawn from a great reservoir of mother wisdom, this book pools the stories of over 200 mothers from around the world. Extensive reviews of medical research and discussions with experts in the fields of nutrition, obstetrics, and anthropology have provided the author with a thorough understanding of what we know and what we can surmise on this important topic. Each mother's experience will be a one-of-a-kind adventure, full of surprises and choices. Adventures in Tandem Nursing provides an essential source of support, humor, and information for the journey.
