Eh. Overall, Good Common Sense Ideas, but reservations 3 out of 5 stars.
23 of 25 people found this review helpful.

I just read through this book for an hour or so... didn't read everything, obviously, but got the gist, I think.

I like the book's sensible approach to MODERATION in both food & fitness. Baby steps, which is right on the money.

I also enjoyed reading the book's suggestions on how to discuss weight sensitively with children of different age groups, and also how to approach mealtimes without creating problems later down the line for the child.

My problem, however, is with the nutritional advice. This book is all about low-fat everything, despite being edited in 2001. Haven't we gotten past the old "all fat is bad fat" stance of the early 90's? This book is constantly suggesting we feed our children empty carbs like pretzels, bagels, fat-free chips, etc. UGH!!

While I am not an Atkins junkie, I try to keep up-to-date on nutrition and I believe simple sugars such as those described contribute to weight gain as much (or possibly even more) than our old enemy, fat. Furthermore, there are good, heart-healthy fats out there that kids should be encouraged to eat: nuts, avocado, seeds, etc. Unfortunately, this book makes no mention of this.

The suggested diets in this book, then, seem to me less than ideal for supporting weight loss while keeping the child satisfied (as is one of their "Rights of Chidren" addressed early on in the book). How can a kid be expected to be sated when his/her belly is full of empty carbs? I wouldn't be surprised that children would feel denied on such low-fat diets, and then overcompensate on fatty snacks when out of parental control.

I'd like to see a book that recommends a whole-foods snack like nuts 'n berries, as opposed to one touting the benefits of a pack of low fat crackers and some non-fat cheese spread.

Finally, on the topic of exercise... while this book includes LOTS of suggestions for working physical activity into a child's daily routine, I was hoping it would cover age-appropriate exercise goals for children. That is, how far/long is it healthy for a preschool child to walk? A school-age child? When is a good age to begin strength training, and what are some safety guidelines? etc. This information does not appear to be included in this book, which is unfortunate.

But again, I did like the overall tone of this book. It's very encouraging and also drives home how we as parents need to model healthy eating & exercise habits at home, for our children to grow up strong & fit. Cheers!

Another physician responds 5 out of 5 stars.
8 of 8 people found this review helpful.

At the outset, I admit I am not a totally unbiased reviewer. I met Lynn at workshop on Complementary/ Alternative Medicine about a year before her book was published. Lynn gave me her card and asked for a reference of the work of Randall Byrd on distant healing prayer. When I became aware that Lynn was writing a book on Holistic Parenting, I offered to do medical proof reading.
As a physician, I really want to respond to the review of Shawn Tessone, criticizing the work, stating "the last two reviewers might take this text as gospel and while her style of writing may be good and easy it does not lend itself to factual data and thus it falls short". I know how meticulous Lynn was in seeking verifiable data to support an area of medicine, which is difficult to research. She has listed over 300 references in her chapter by chapter bibliography. There are at least 700 sources of information on "Holistic Healing" and I think her easy to read style is a good way for most lay people to get through a healing book.
Let me respond to Dr. Tessone's example about fever. Infectious disease specialists are taking a new look a fever as a normal body defense mechanism, faithfully preserved over our process of evolution. In certain diseases such as Influenza A, treatment to reduce fever lengthened the course of the illness. In the 1920's and 30's (pre-antibiotic era), virtually every hospital had a "fever-box" where patients with infections would be placed to induce fever and hopefully shorten the infection. I have references in the peer reviewed scientific literature concerning this if she or others are interested.
In Chapter One she carefully goes over the difference between "Complementary" and "Integrative," the term most Universities now use to describe the interface between the "Conventional" and "Unconventional".
This is an important book and as she points out no one should follow her experience, but at least give it a read, check it out and try what seems reasonable for you.

Editorial Review:

Designed to address the many aspects of women's health over a lifetime, this series of books by Dr. Miriam Stoppard is uniquely accessible and affordable. Small, fully illustrated guides meet women's individual needs at every stage of life --from teenagers curious about their changing bodies to new mothers looking for advice and reassurance to women of all ages experiencing menopause. Fully illustrated, straight-forward, and practical, these are the ideal healthcare guides for every woman.

Children's appetites are notoriously fickle; they're easily distracted from their food and they may have a fad for certain foods for days on end. But you can still give your child all the nutrients she needs by providing variety over a weekly period, rather than worrying about making every 24-hour period nutritionally complete. First Foods is separated in two sections: the first part tells you all about weaning your baby and feeding an older baby and toddler, with helpful food preparation dos and don'ts. It also covers information on family and social eating, practical nutrition guidelines, and help with feeding problems, including food intolerance and allergies. Separate charts suggest when to introduce different foods to your child and give advice on preparing and serving fresh fruits and vegetables. The second part of the book is full of creative ideas for feeding children from nine months old. All the meals are based on finger foods. They're nutritionally balanced and generally made with foods that you'd use and prepare for the rest of the family. More than 60 recipes are included and illustrated in full color.

Editorial Review:

Product description

The Devils Fat is a book everybody should read. The Omega Three and Six essential fatty acids families, (EFAs), are particularly fundamental to female health. Omega 6 is the sibling of Omega 3. If Omega 3 is the mistress, Omega 6 is the master. Omega 6 arguably links us to the fertility of the environment. The impact of EFAs on health, body structure, and function are little understood by the general public. Omega 3 and 6 alter behaviour.

This book looks at pressing issues in society from an Omega 3 and 6 viewpoint including the impact of excess Omega 6 on health costs, for individuals and nations, in a competitive world. Issues examined include; western inflammatory conditions, such as ADHD, asthma, arthritis, diabetes, osteoporosis, and neurological disorders like dementia and Alzheimer's, as well as fertility, early puberty, obesity, sleep quality, gender identity, alcohol consumption, and behavioral trends such as aggression, self harm, suicide, and criminality. The book tries to be both understandable to the general public, and sufficiently authoritative to interest a doctor. Well over 800 references are made to trials and reports. There is no other book in the mainstream market that examines the importance of Omega 3 and 6 in human health, in such detail or breadth.

A female librarian said the book was fascinating and difficult to put down. Another female reader said the central message was very clear, and was applied to everyday issues of interest. Robert Brown is a lay person. Robert had to understand the subject matter from scratch. He takes the reader on his search to understand the why EFAs are so important to health. The book contains a wealth of information. It is split into small indexed topic sections for browsing. There are no commercial links. Excess Omega 6 has more profound and wide spread impact than smoking. It is insidious. Most of us have no idea that excess Omega 6 is anything but good for us - we are told eat more polyunsaturates. Vegetable oils can contain 70% Omega 6 and no Omega 3. The influence of excess Omega 6 is from conception to grave. The neatest of twists is that you are programmed to store Omega 6 in your body fat. Why the Devils Fat? The Devil is traditionally linked with the number 666. Omega Six 18:2 n6 has lots of links with 6s.It is eighteen carbon atoms long, and the 1st. double bond is at the 6th carbon. Excess Omega 6 promotes the seven deadly sins, lust, gluttony, greed, wrath, envy, pride, and sloth.

Trials show excess Omega 6 and lack of 3 increases male behavioural traits like aggression, impulsiveness, self interest, and less cooperative behaviour. At the same time 6 reduces female traits. Omega 6 increases risks of western illnesses. If the Devil (real or construct I leave to you) had wanted to promote the seven deadly sins, he or she could not have found a better way. Omega 6 in excess allows us to turn ourselves into dumber, sicker, more aggressive, impulsive, selfish, humans, which arguably is not the best mix for a long term sustained future, on an increasingly crowded planet. Excess Omega 6 sets the body into a permanent low level inflammatory state. The body is put on constant alert. In time, incomplete sleep, permanent stress, and excess inflammatory Omega 6 chemicals, with a lack of Omega 3, lead to greater risk of the western inflammatory conditions. A lack of Omega 3 and excess of Omega 6 is arguably a core explanation for growing rates of western conditions. The book explains why.Omega 3 and 6 cannot be compared to ginseng or green tea.

Omega 3 and 6 were in the earliest design or evolutionary specifications list, and feature in many of the body processes, and most of the structures. Omega 3 helps define women. Women make 10 times more long chain Omega 3 DHA, than men. Omega 3 the mistress, moderates, calms and controls the master Omega 6. Without a balance of both the Omega 3 and 6 fats there is no harmony.

Excellent Choices for Picky Eaters!!! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I have three children under the age of 7, and they would eat practically all of these recipes! There are some processed foods in the ingredients, but for todays family I think that's what a lot of us are looking for. JoAnna explains in the beginning of her book (in case some of the reviewers missed it) that this cookbook may not be for everyone. Hot dogs are not for every family, but tofu isn't for mine! She did an excellent job breaking everything down for families, and you can tell she has a true desire for families to be healthy. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I like cookbooks the best with pictures to give an idea of what the foods are like. Other than that, it was great!

Editorial Review:

In all of her phenomenally successful cookbooks, JoAnna Lund has proved that you can eat healthy and still have the kinds of foods you love to eat: hearty, delicious, and satisfying. Now, JoAnna offers enticing, easy-to-prepare, and good-for-you recipes that will keep every "kid" in the family coming back for more. This is family-style eating that even the busiest families can enjoy. And because no one outgrows the need for great-tasting food, Cooking Healthy with the Kids in Mind features more than two hundred recipes, from Get-Out-of-Bed Breakfasts to Fill-'Em-Up Main Dishes to Scrumptious Snacktimes. In addition to these great recipes, JoAnna offers practical advice on nutrition for kids, family fitness, helping your kids make healthy choices when they're not eating at home, and handling fussy eaters-no matter what their age.

Editorial Review:

As America has grown into a heavier, more sedentary nation, so have its kids.

20 millionon--fully one-quarter--of American children are overweight, with 11% severely obese.

36% of our children aged 2 to 19 have high cholesterol.

66% of 5- to 17-year-olds fail to meet minimum fitness criteria.

Knowing what he does about the connection between diet, exercise, and health, lay expert Joseph C. Piscatella is alarmed. Author of Don't Eat Your Heart Out Cookbook and other books for adults with over 2 million copies in print, Mr. Piscatella now turns to motivating parents to reverse the dangerous trend of overweight, out-of-shape kids. A compelling, comprehensive source book and diet and exercise guide, Fat-Proof Your Child spells out the whys of the problemo--from too much fast food to too much television, diminishing Phys Ed programs to inexcusably fatty school lunches--then offers easy-to-implement solutions that will get not only kids but also parents back on the right track.

Here are 7 Basics that will improve a child's food habits; the Activity Pyramid for children and adolescents; up-to-date research on fat, sugar, salt, and fiber; and, from his wife, Bernie, over 100 recipes that modify favorite family dishes.
