Editorial Review:

One out of five American children are severely overweight, and this trend shows no signs of stopping. This increasingly common problem is prompting parents to ask how they can protect their kids from the dangers of obesity. In this unique book, Judy Halliday and Joani Jack explain their method for the prevention of and treatment for obesity, tailoring their advice to the specific needs of growing children. They outline the three core concepts of healthy eating: portion control, nutritional meals, and regular exercise, and emphasize the importance of listening to natural body cues of hunger and satisfaction. The authors incorporate their medical knowledge and experience as parents into a faith-based approach to healthy living that is easy for parents and kids to apply. Because this is practical, proven advice rather than a diet, the guidance in this book is appropriate for all ages, and gives parents the tools to encourage behavioral changes in their kids so that they can live fit lives to the fullest.

Editorial Review:

Feeding your family a healthy diet (in the real world with real kids and real food) can be a challenge! Parents are trying to follow current nutrition guidelines, teach their kids healthy eating habits--and avoid too much junk food. But these goals are hard to meet when kids (and adults!) have strong food preferences; if there are daily fights over what, when, and/or how-much kids should eat; and because meals must to be fit into a super busy schedule. Feeding the Kids solves these problems with a new, easy-to-use system for feeding the entire familly well every day...all while enjoying eating more.

This system makes it easy to:

  • Find kid-friendly, healthy food easily using simple label-reading tricks that classify all foods into three categories: Smart foods (super healthy foods packed with nutrition); Empty items (junk food that provides little nutrition but fill kids up); and In-Between choices (partly Smart and partly Empty). Using this new system, anyone can pick out the healthiest versions of snacks, drinks, breakfast cereal, pasta, lunch meats, chicken nuggets, or any other food.
  • Eat enough Smart and In-Between food. Feeding the Kids includes a customized routine that makes meal planning incredibly easy. Even better, the plan insures that the whole family gets into the habit of eating enough Smart foods each day, including: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, dairy foods and protein-rich foods. But this plan doesn't follow pre-set menus and certainly doesn't include eating foods the family dislikes. Instead, this plan can be adapted to include favorite foods, meals out and family food preferences.
  • Stop feeling guilty about junk food. Empties are a fun part of life, and everyone (adults and children) should be allowed to really enjoy them. The Feeding the Kids approach to these foods is to: recognize which foods are Empties (especially the sneaky ones that look healthy), eliminate less-loved Empty food, then really enjoy, guilt-free, the Empties the children do love.
  • Serve great-tasting, healthy meals, and fun, nutritious snacks...fast. Feeding the Kids includes over 50 mini-recipes and lots of simple menus ideas that are kid-tested and extremely easy to make. Recipes include healthy versions of: chicken nuggets, milkshakes, cookies, pancakes, sorbet, hot chocolate, hamburgers, popsicles and many more family favorites.

Shame on Amazon.com!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
44 of 54 people found this review helpful.

Shame on Amazon.com for including a link to a sanofi-pasteur ADVERTISEMENT for DPT vaccine in this book's listing information!
I am appalled that Amazon is so hard up for cash they must resort to taking blood-money from the corporations responsible for our children's nightmare. While we spend hundreds of thousands of dollars attempting to reverse the damage done to our children by this and other pharmaceutical companies, Amazon helps them to blow smoke to other unsuspecting parents and lull them into ignorant complacency regarding "government-recommended vaccinations". There is only ONE thing driving the govt's vaccination schedule, and that is MONEY.
And now these same companies add insult to injury (literally) by getting congress to pass laws to prevent them from owning up to their complicity in the damage done to our children?
Enough! Enough being a nation of sheep, all jumping off a cliff one after the other.
READ THIS BOOK and take it to heart! Your legislators (with few notable exceptions) don't care about your children, only their own deep pockets.
*Educate before you vaccinate*
*Your child...Your choice*
The message in this book (and others like it) NEEDS to be made common knowledge; the sooner the better for the health of America's children.

This comprehensive books guides parents who are raising vegetarian children. Especially helpful is the advice for vegans who must be especially conscientious in making sure their children can all the necessary nutrients and calories. Once you get past the beginning part of the book that is pretty much tables and charts of nutrients, this book gets quite interesting and actually readable. This is a terrific resource for parents in need of support when choosing a vegetarian or vegan diet for their child.

An all-new edition of America's favorite guide to bringing up baby as a vegetarian, this book incorporates all the latest information to answer questions and lay to rest any lingering doubts about a vegetarian regimen for infants.

Editorial Review:

Puberty, divorce, drugs, masturbation, eating disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are all waiting to ambush the unsuspecting parent in a midchild crisis, and each one is thoroughly addressed in this encyclopedic tour of the years between infancy and adolescence. In fact, the chapters that cover traditional medical problems--ear infections, stomach aches, hives, broken bones--are in the minority. Most of the clear, simple writing is devoted to social matters and the psychology of parenting. What should you do if your child is being bullied? Is it OK for a child to attend a funeral at this age? How do you control temper tantrums? Does it help to repeat a grade if your child isn't doing well in school?

The second in a three-volume series, this revised and updated guide culls advice from more than 60 pediatric specialists. As a result, it assumes a middle-of-the-road stance meant for the average parent. For detailed information about complex topics, such as learning disabilities and chronic illnesses like asthma and diabetes, parents may need to search for more specialized titles. But as a first reference and general guide, this book fills the parenting advice void in the middle years with a reassuring voice. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

In Lunch Lessons, she and Lisa Holmes spell out how parents and school employees can help instill healthy habits in children, by providing a variety of invaluable information such as:

  • An explanation of the basics of good childhood nutrition
  • Dozens of tasty, home-tested recipes for breakfast, lunch, and snacks.

Fantastic resource for those (thinking of) breastfeeding two 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

A wonderful book covering a little-discussed topic which would be helpful for anyone considering breastfeeding a toddler as well as a new baby. It includes lots of data and research but I found the quotes and case studies from mothers who've done it most useful. In the end it gives no answers or even recommendations - other than to listen to your own body as well as your children's needs - but I found it invaluable as reassurance that lots of mothers do it and there can be both challenges and huge rewards.

Editorial Review:

There is no doubt about it—when breastfeeding and pregnancy overlap, the questions abound! In this, the first full-length book ever on the topic of tandem nursing, Hilary Flower gives comprehensive and in-depth answers to a wide range of questions related to breastfeeding during pregnancy and tandem nursing.

Drawn from a great reservoir of mother wisdom, this book pools the stories of over 200 mothers from around the world. Extensive reviews of medical research and discussions with experts in the fields of nutrition, obstetrics, and anthropology have provided the author with a thorough understanding of what we know and what we can surmise on this important topic. Each mother's experience will be a one-of-a-kind adventure, full of surprises and choices. Adventures in Tandem Nursing provides an essential source of support, humor, and information for the journey.

A Great Book for any New Parent, a great resource for pediatricians to suggest 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

As a pediatrician and a new parent, I found "food fights" extremely helpful. It is a quicks read that gives practical information to parents about topics that stress us all out. I have started recommending this book to parents at all of our early well-child checks. It helps parents find answers to everyday feeding questions without having to call or wait for the next appointment, or feel like they are reading a textbook.

Editorial Review:

Restore "peas and harmony" to the dining table with this comprehensive guide to building successful childhood feeding strategies. Focus is placed on the food-fight challenges parents are most likely to face—such as starting babies on solid foods, dealing with picky eaters, and making healthy food choices in child-care settings and restaurants—and a wide range of winning solutions are offered. More than a simple nutrition guide, this book also addresses the behavior and development issues surrounding the feeding challenges of early childhood. With a family-sized serving of useful advice and a generous helping of humor, this resource offers invaluable food for thought and real world advice that parents can use every day.

A wonderful guide for parents 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

After making the decision to make home made baby food for my son I wanted to try to find a book that would cover a range of important topics. Some of the important topics that our pediatrician said to look for were food allergies, when to introduce food at the right stage and also food preparation and storage. I also was hoping to find a few recipes that werent too time consuming and covered the baics from purees to simple started solids and this book has it all.
The book has a wonderful index so you dont have to read it in order if you dont want to, you can bop from subject to subject as you find necessary. It is also stocked up with nutritional information such as which vitamins and minerals were most important and what foods contained these.
One of the most important thing for me was knowing when to feed my son which foods and this book has taken the mystery out of it all. The section that starts with what to feed baby first goes in order. For example you want to start by feeding a basic rice cereal and then about a week or so later you can move onto oats or barley. In that section the recipes go in that order so as not to confuse you!
As a concerned mother who wants to do the right thing by making the healthiest, freshest foods for my child I can honestly say that this book makes my life much easier and has helped calm a lot of my worries as to what and when to feed my son. It is also very reassuring that a nutritionist and a RD helped to co-write this book. It is basically a how-to guide for beginners in the world of baby food, with the added bonus of some wonderful easy-to-make recipes.
The only thing I noticed while reading through with a fine tooth comb was that they do say at one point (in the section on what to buy for making baby food) that you can buy berries of any kind. This isnt entirely true as strawberries are an allergenic food for children under the age of one. They do however cover the allergy and risk of offering strawberries to babies under the age of one in the food allergy section and foods to watch out for- so its a little contradictory however the food allergy section comes way before they tell you how and what to make so you hopefully will have read that by the time you get to making the food!
All in all a wonderful book for all parents who want to know about a wide variety of topics concerning home made baby food for babies and toddlers!
