Editorial Review:

Puberty, divorce, drugs, masturbation, eating disorders, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder are all waiting to ambush the unsuspecting parent in a midchild crisis, and each one is thoroughly addressed in this encyclopedic tour of the years between infancy and adolescence. In fact, the chapters that cover traditional medical problems--ear infections, stomach aches, hives, broken bones--are in the minority. Most of the clear, simple writing is devoted to social matters and the psychology of parenting. What should you do if your child is being bullied? Is it OK for a child to attend a funeral at this age? How do you control temper tantrums? Does it help to repeat a grade if your child isn't doing well in school?

The second in a three-volume series, this revised and updated guide culls advice from more than 60 pediatric specialists. As a result, it assumes a middle-of-the-road stance meant for the average parent. For detailed information about complex topics, such as learning disabilities and chronic illnesses like asthma and diabetes, parents may need to search for more specialized titles. But as a first reference and general guide, this book fills the parenting advice void in the middle years with a reassuring voice. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

This comprehensive books guides parents who are raising vegetarian children. Especially helpful is the advice for vegans who must be especially conscientious in making sure their children can all the necessary nutrients and calories. This was an invaluable source when writing my cookbook, Simply Natural Baby Food, as I wanted to concentrate on vegetarian and vegan recipes.

Good Information 4 out of 5 stars.

Once you get past the beginning part of the book that is pretty much tables and charts of nutrients, this book gets quite interesting and actually readable. This is a terrific resource for parents in need of support when choosing a vegetarian or vegan diet for their child.

Editorial Review:

An all-new edition of America's favorite guide to bringing up baby as a vegetarian, this book incorporates all the latest information to answer questions and lay to rest any lingering doubts about a vegetarian regimen for infants.

Editorial Review:

When you're eating for two, you need to eat well.

There's no question that a vegetarian or vegan diet is just as nutritionally sound during pregnancy as one that includes animal protein. In fact, vegetarian nutrition offers pregnant women valuable health benefits that you simply won't find in a nonvegetarian diet, such as higher levels of folic acid, lower cholesterol, and an abundant variety of essential minerals, vitamins, and nutrients. Whether you are already vegetarian or you simply want to reduce the amount of meat in your diet, making the right dietary choices to support you and your baby is the key to a safe, healthy pregnancy.

Fulfilling every nutritional guideline recommended by the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Your Vegetarian Pregnancy is the first authoritative guide to maintaining a healthy plant-based diet before, during, and after the birth of your child. Combining complete obstetrical information with sound nutritional guidance, this guide will educate you about:

Basic pregnancy issues, such as fetal development, changes within your body, and preparation for labor and delivery.

What to expect each month, and how to cope with the unexpected.

Key nutrients for your baby and you, with suggestions on how to obtain these through diet, vitamins, and supplements.

The myriad benefits to eating vegetarian during pregnancy, in an entire chapter comparing vegetarian and nonvegetarian nutrition.

With this unique and accessible handbook, you can be confident that your vegetarian pregnancy will be wonderfully beneficial for both you and your baby.

Editorial Review:

This is the first practical guide for the families of children and teenagers with celiac disease, a chronic, life-long digestive disorder. One out of 250 Americans is born with this genetic autoimmune condition, which is characterized by intolerance of gluten (wheat, rye, barley, malt, and other food additives) and often goes undiagnosed. In a supportive conversational style, Danna Korn shows that it's possible for kids with celiac disease and their families to lead happy and healthy lives.

Parents find advice on how to deal with the diagnosis, cope with emotional turmoil, and help their child develop a positive and constructive attitude. Especially important is the guidance on menu planning, grocery shopping, strategies for proper food preparation, and deciding whether or not the entire family should be gluten-fee. There's even a section on junk food!

What about the child who has difficulty sticking with the prescribed diet? Parents find tips on conditioning behavior and how and when to give kids some control over what they eat. Also covered is the challenge of controlling meals outside of the home-at birthday parties, restaurants, camp, and on vacation. Dozens of recipes help parents be creative and offer well-rounded appealing meals and snacks. There's also information about how special education laws can help with services at school.

As the only comprehensive book of its kind, Kids with Celiac Disease will be the bible for the thousands of families coping with this condition. Physicians and nutritionists too, will want to refer new families to this complete resource.

Hard to get cubes of food out of the food tray... 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this set because it's one of the few BPA-free food storage trays out there (I also bought Baby Cubes which I found were much easier to use). The cubes of frozen baby food were very hard to pop out of the tray. I had to pound and pound the trays on the countertop and even still, I'd be lucky if I got one or two out. However, when they do pop out, it's very easy to put them in a freezer bag back in the freezer and then defrost the little food cubes when needed. I LOVE their little cheat-sheet on nutrition though; it was very useful and I have it up on my fridge. If I could go back in time, I would still get the set just for that sheet! So, if I could get the food out, I would probably rate this 5 stars instead of 3.

Editorial Review:

Feeding your family a healthy diet (in the real world with real kids and real food) can be a challenge! Parents are trying to follow current nutrition guidelines, teach their kids healthy eating habits--and avoid too much junk food. But these goals are hard to meet when kids (and adults!) have strong food preferences; if there are daily fights over what, when, and/or how-much kids should eat; and because meals must to be fit into a super busy schedule. Feeding the Kids solves these problems with a new, easy-to-use system for feeding the entire familly well every day...all while enjoying eating more.

This system makes it easy to:

  • Find kid-friendly, healthy food easily using simple label-reading tricks that classify all foods into three categories: Smart foods (super healthy foods packed with nutrition); Empty items (junk food that provides little nutrition but fill kids up); and In-Between choices (partly Smart and partly Empty). Using this new system, anyone can pick out the healthiest versions of snacks, drinks, breakfast cereal, pasta, lunch meats, chicken nuggets, or any other food.
  • Eat enough Smart and In-Between food. Feeding the Kids includes a customized routine that makes meal planning incredibly easy. Even better, the plan insures that the whole family gets into the habit of eating enough Smart foods each day, including: vegetables, fruits, whole grains, dairy foods and protein-rich foods. But this plan doesn't follow pre-set menus and certainly doesn't include eating foods the family dislikes. Instead, this plan can be adapted to include favorite foods, meals out and family food preferences.
  • Stop feeling guilty about junk food. Empties are a fun part of life, and everyone (adults and children) should be allowed to really enjoy them. The Feeding the Kids approach to these foods is to: recognize which foods are Empties (especially the sneaky ones that look healthy), eliminate less-loved Empty food, then really enjoy, guilt-free, the Empties the children do love.
  • Serve great-tasting, healthy meals, and fun, nutritious snacks...fast. Feeding the Kids includes over 50 mini-recipes and lots of simple menus ideas that are kid-tested and extremely easy to make. Recipes include healthy versions of: chicken nuggets, milkshakes, cookies, pancakes, sorbet, hot chocolate, hamburgers, popsicles and many more family favorites.

So disappointed... Not at all what we need 1 out of 5 stars.
5 of 8 people found this review helpful.

We a wanted nutritional help-mate for raising our vegetarian baby. Despite the title, this is a strictly vegan (no dairy, eggs, honey, etc...) bible that suggests a baby begin eating a soy-filled diet at 9 months, and processed soy-foods such as soy yogurt as early as 7 months! The book is preachy and filled with less than helpful tidbits - such as suggesting your child could develop diseases like Crohns if he/she eats dairy.

Editorial Review:

When parents choose a vegetarian lifestyle for their child, it can set family fingers wagging in dietary disapproval. It's no easier on steak-loving parents when Junior announces he's sworn off meat. With the strategies in Raising Vegetarian Children, parents can ease family tensions and learn to accommodate the nutritional and emotional needs of their vegetarian offspring.

It includes a detailed explanation of the Vegetarian Food Pyramid and its vitamin- and protein-rich foods, allays concerns over dietary gaps, and is packed with recipes that will please any growing vegetarian, from infant to teenager.

Good resource 4 out of 5 stars.
44 of 52 people found this review helpful.

(...)I went through this book marking sections to go back over and re-read. Much of the book is geared toward explaining what A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. is, the symptoms, and possible contributing factors. I could not help but wonder WHY? Anyone looking up information on A.D.D. and/or A.D.H.D. already knows what it is. Chances are they have talked, in depth, to their doctor(s) already.

A.D.D. stands for Attention Deficit Disorder. The "H" stands for someone with A.D.D. and has hyperactivity with it. If you are looking for something with A.D.L.D. ("L" stands for a problem with "Learning" instead of a problem with "Hyperactivity".) Then this book is NOT for you. Nothing in this book even remotely touches A.D.L.D.

This book is put together to give an idea of how to treat the symptoms of A.D.D. and A.D.H.D. naturally. That does not mean you will successfully treat the disorder by what is in this book. But what parent would not want to read everything they can find on the subject and gain an idea of what else they could possibly do? This book will have you parents saying "Yeah! That is exactly what my child is like! I know exactly what you mean!" I may be a "reviewer" but I only agreed to review this book because my own son is A.D.H.D. Whether you give medication or not, this book is for you! The concerned parent! The one who does not want to miss a chance of helping your child have a better life, now and in the future!

This book has been a best seller for a long time. It is revised often, as all good medical non-fictions are. After all, scientists and doctors are learning new things every single day. The public needs to be educated. Here is your chance to BE educated. Do not let it pass!

The chapters include:

If You Want Something Different, You've Got to Do Something Different.
Going Through The Open Door
"But Why Do I Have ADD?"
The First Step Toward Changing Your Diet
What Should You Eat?
Tasty Recipes
The Importance of Detoxifying
Supplements That We Need
Nutrients That Help A.D.D. & A.D.H.D.
Non-Dietary Approaches to A.D.D. / A.D.H.D.
Resource Directory, Bibliography, Index. (...)

Editorial Review:

This book gives the latest information on what to eat, what to avoid, problems with chemicals, supplements that help, non-dietary approaches, reasons for ADD and more! It takes you through some easy steps to eliminate the triggers for ADD/ADHD that you may consider before you give your child drugs to see if the symptoms go away. It is a simple read that touches on many subjects and gives the reader an eye opener into potential causes of ADD/ADHD.
