Editorial Review:

A new translation by Sergio E. Serrano of this inspirational book containing sound advice on the art of living by the late historian, biographer, and philosopher, Andre Maurois. Our lives are works of art, expressions of inner beauty, conceived and created by our inner selves, tested by the circumstances and experiences of life, perfected and modified by the learning and growth resulting from these experiences. Few authors have expressed these timeless principles with more eloquence than Andre Maurois (1885 - 1967), one of the most celebrated and prolific French writers of the 20th century. An Art of Living is divided into five sections: The Art of Thinking, The Art of Loving, The Art of Working, The Art of Leadership, and The Art of Growing Old. Each section contains very profound, timeless, wisdom about the most important aspects we face in life. There is so much insight in this book!

Editorial Review:

Raising good kids can save the world. Good kids can help make the world a kinder, safer place. Kids who are raised to be good--above and beyond any other characteristic--mature into adults who display honor and integrity in their daily lives. Children who value goodness don't cheat on a test to get into the college of their choice. They don't steal candy from the grocery store or grow into adults who steal office supplies from the workplace. They treat others with respect and kindness, and they don't hurt innocent people through violence, manipulation, or cruelty. If every parent focused first and foremost on goodness, society could minimize many of today's biggest problems: violence, cruelty, dishonesty, thievery, narcissism, exploitation, mistrust, substance abuse, arrogance, and more. My Goodness: My Kids offers its readers thought-provoking theories and techniques that contribute to raising Good Kids. Here are some examples of what readers will learn. No curfew for teenagers can build trust and respect--and get your kids home earlier than expected. Not paying for grades can teach children to love learning--for the pure joy of it. Early education about sex and drugs can reduce experimentation during teenage years. Asking children to design their punishment can increase harmony in the home and teach consequences to actions. Encouraging children to argue can develop their confidence and self-worth. Certain troubling lyrics can help a distressed child release rightly held anger. Certain R-rated movies can teach children to think through issues and develop strength of character. Telling your child "I'm sorry" can heal a family hurt and promote unity. Encouraging children to argue can develop their confidence and self worth. No assigned chores can inspire children to cheerfully pitch in.

Fun & Thought Provoking! 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this book on my mom's coffee table and couldn't put it down. I would say I drove my family crazy, asking one question after another, but they enjoyed it as much as I did!

This book asks questions ranging from silly to serious - and though many of the questions don't ask you to explain your answers, invariably, explanations are offered. It really is a great "conversation piece."

Editorial Review:

Following their previous success (The Conversation Piece) Bret Nicholaus and Paul Lowrie suggest 300 Christmas-themed questions designed to bring any gathering back to the core purposes of the holiday: love, reflection, and merriment. The Christmas Conversation Piece is based on the belief that the right questions can spark understanding, humor, and connection between friends and loved ones. Try them out when entertaining, mingling at the office Christmas party, or simply having dinner with your family. Here's a sample: "What is your favorite Christmas scent?"; "What's your all-time biggest Christmas shopping disaster?"; "What is the most unusual Christmas tradition you ever heard of?"; "What has been the greatest blessing in your life since last Christmas?"

Editorial Review:

The Schooled Heart addresses a basic question about the nature of the university: should moral education figure among the university's purposes? This volume offers an affirmative response to that question. A central purpose of the university is the moral formation of students-what Beaty and Henry call the schooling of the heart.

Editorial Review:

Here is a wealth of astute and warmhearted counsel on many of life’s most difficult ethical dilemmas. Joseph Telushkin outlines his ten commandments of character, explaining why each one is so vital, and then addresses perplexing issues that can and often do crop up in our lives relating to family, friends, work, community, medical ethics, and money, such as:

• How honest should you be when you are asked to give a reference?
• How much assistance should you give your son with his college application essay?
• Is it wrong to receive a kidney from an executed prisoner in China?
• What should you do if your father begs you to end his life rather than allow him to descend into the hell of Alzheimer’s?
• Should a brother give up part of his inheritance if his sister has children and considerable expenses and he doesn’t?
• Should a dying woman reveal to her husband that their son is not really his?

Many of us are finding it increasingly hard to tread the fine line between right and wrong. In The Ten Commandments of Character, Telushkin faces these issues squarely and shows us how to live a life of true integrity.

“At a time when so many people are looking for moral guidance, we are lucky to have Joseph Telushkin as our guide and teacher. I am thoroughly impressed by his wisdom and good sense.”—Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People

A book to show how a father can really influence a child 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I feel that the mark of a true book isn't to inform us about something, but to make us ponder farther on the subject. I can't say that this book told me how to be a father, but it did show me what a gift it is going to be when I become a one. It was a great tribute to his father. Even though I don't believe in ALL of his values, I do have some things to consider in my onw life. After reading this book, I have a different view of some of the same issues. I recommend it to anyone that feels that they still have something to learn in life.

A moral compass--two amazing men! 5 out of 5 stars.

In light of his role in the government at this time, it was enlightening and refreshing to read that John Ashcroft had such a great Christian upbringing. The lessons he learned from his father have served him well in public life. This book seems to strive not so much to give an autobiography of John D. Ashcroft, but to show how much his father influenced his life. It is an example to all Christian fathers. Even if the reader might not be a fundamentalist Christian, he or she will learn what an influence one person can be in the life of another. Excellent book!

Editorial Review:

Senator John Ashcroft writes about the values and spiritual principles he learned from his father who was a country preacher. Lessons from a Father to His Son is filled with stories about Senator Ashcroft's father who was a simple man, but profoundly spiritual. These stories will entertain and inspire, while imparting life lessons.

Excellent Resource for parents with children of all ages 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

In the newly released book Raising Courageous Kids: Eight Steps to Practical Heroism (Sorin Books, July 2004), author Charles Smith offers parents a treasure chest of resources for recognizing and nurturing the qualities of courage and heroism within their children.

Looking at developmental stages between birth and adolescence, Raising Courageous Kids provides parents with practical, realistic guidelines for arming children to meet challenges with courage. As an added source of inspiration, Raising Courageous Kids features numerous "Mighty Heart" stories of children who have risen to the level of real-life heroes through tremendous acts of courage.

I strongly recommend that parents, teachers, grandparents and anyone playing a role in the raising of a child or young teen read this book and begin to implement its principles.

Editorial Review:

Sooner or later, no matter how much we want to protect them, our children will face adversity when we cannot be there to help. Perhaps there will be a bully to deal with at school, an offer of drugs, or a life-threatening accident, attack, or illness. But eventually, in some way, life will demand that our children face fear, make choices, and take appropriate action. This groundbreaking guide explains how courage develops from birth to adolescence and provides solid information and practical ideas to help parents nurture courage at every stage.

Thoroughly 'parent friendly' and highly recommended 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The collaborative work of academician Bettie B. Youngs, clinical psychologist and philanthropist Joanne Wolf, business entrepreneur Joani Wafer, and cultural anthropologist Dawn Lehman, "Teaching Kids To Care: Nurturing Character And Compassion" focuses upon assisting parents to instill life-enhancing values into the characters of their children through the repeated practice of caring for others (and for themselves) through the five 'touchstones' of Interdependence, Connection, Perspective, Gratitude, and Inspiration. Of special note are the chapters devoted to 'Inspiring Testimonials from Kids Korps USA Experiences'; 'Kids Korps USA'; and 'Creating a Caring Epidemic in Your Community'. Enhanced with two appendices (Resources for Teaching Kids to Care and Suggested Reading), as well as extensive Endnotes, "Teaching Kids To Care" is thoroughly 'parent friendly' and highly recommended for personal, academic, and community library Parenting Skills Development reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Editorial Review:

"Dreaming about a child's future begins long before the child is actually born. We wish for them to be happy, successful, well adjusted and healthy. Unfortunately, the world sends mixed messages and children do not just download these qualities. How do we as parents ensure that our children have the empathy and integrity that we dreamed they would? How do we fight the all too human attributes of selfishness, self-absorption, complacency, bullying and isolation and teach children to care?" --from Teaching Kids to Care

The award-winning Kids Korps founders present parents with a fresh framework and the tools necessary to shape children into productive, well-adjusted, compassionate individuals. By focusing on the five caring Touchstones, they offer ways to surround their children with actions and messages designed to strengthen character, build self-esteem and develop inner contentment.

Editorial Review:

Psychologist Janie Ward has written an insightful and brave book about parenting African American teenagers. The Skin We're In addresses the gap between "black baby boomer parents" and their hip-hop children, offering sound strategies to help adolescents gain confidence about their racial identity and to recognize and resist racism. Ward's portrait of parenting in the post civil rights era is fair and unflinching. She suggests that the new racism ("being pulled over for driving black") demands a new approach. Resistance used to be in the street, but now it's in the mind, says Ward. As she explains, "The African American family can provide a safe and loving context--a home space--in which our adolescents can question the social inequities they see." Ward frames healthy resistance to racism in terms of four habits of mind (name it, read it, oppose it, replace it) that can be learned and practiced in the family circle. This model is illustrated with vivid, moving anecdotes and annotated parent-teen dialogues. Her approach urges parents to combine elements of the dominant culture and traditional black culture by drawing upon the rich legacies of social activism and spiritual and folk wisdom.

Ward also addresses challenges on the street and at school for teens including coping with sex, friendship, materialism and low expectations at school. Two compelling chapters focus on gender issues, for example, how to steer boys away from the "tough guy" or "player" stereotypes and how to guide girls to discover their unique beauty in our "light, long, and lean" culture. In Ward's view, race defines the parenting process for African American families. An illuminating guide to creating a confident and vibrant racial identity, The Skin We're In offers parents and educators counsel that is both streetwise and spiritual. --Barbara Mackoff

Touching and Inspiring 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Ms. Ballard touches the soul of every reader in the lead story "Three Letters From Teddy." It is a must-read for all teachers as in it the teacher, Ms. Thompson, learns a powerful lesson. It tugs at the hearts of all who care for children and their futures.

Ms. Ballard has the ability to grab the reader from the very start and you'll find yourself trying to finish this book in one sitting! There are many stories in this little book, all so very human and often inspiring. I bought this book as gifts for friends and relatives, and I believe you will want to do the same. Ms. Ballard delves into the lessons of life and reminds us we are all human and will always have our own lessons to learn.

Editorial Review:

The stories are...timeless. They touch the heart and make one think. The stories are beautifully written. It seems to me, that there is too much truth in some of the stories for her not to have experienced the pain described. Heart wrenchingly beautiful. You feel pain and sadness but at the same time you understand forgiveness and truth and are left with a feeling of peace when you come to the end. Everyone who reads the book will be able to identify with it, each differently based on what they've experienced. It's a book you can read again and again. I loved the book and will recommend it to my friends!!!!
