Editorial Review:

One of America's most thoughtful ministers adds a startling new twist to the Seven Deadly Sins.

Our world is awash in false dichotomies: "You're either for us or against us, good or evil, 'born again' or 'left behind.'"

Virtue is virtue, and vice is vice, but is it really that simple? Are the rules of proper conduct that black and white?

With extraordinary clarity of thought and word, Dr. Robin Meyers argues that there are seven vital, life-affirming attributes everyone must embrace to lead a full life-and that in fact not only are these virtues not the opposite of evil, but that each is based on urges and instinct that are similar to the Seven Deadly Sins.

  • Pride is a sin; Self-worth is essential to life.
  • Envy is a sin; Emulation is essential to life.
  • Anger is a sin; Righteous Indignation is essential to life.
  • Lust is a sin; Holy Eros is essential to life.
  • Gluttony is a sin; Communion is essential to life.
  • Greed is a sin; Wanting Wisely is essential to life.
  • Sloth is a sin; Contentment is essential to life.
This isn't a philosophical treatise (although after reading this book no reader will ever think about morality in the same way again). The Virtue in the Vice uses personal stories, pop culture examples, and anecdotes from both the contemporary world and the Bible to create a practical plan for living. This book will help people embrace the ambiguity of life and the moral clarity that comes with honoring their own rights and needs and those of their fellow man.

Understanding history allows to explain the present

A candidate in the French presidential elections(Mr. Le Pen) recently compared the 9/11 attacks on the United States to the carpet bombing of Dresden and Marseille by the Anglo-American air forces during the WW II . It is not an isolated case of an abusive employment of historical facts for political manipulation. There is no other defense against such manipulation than knowing and understanding history.

Michael Bess' book is a milestone in our knowledge of the WW II which, despite its ambiguities, was a just war fought against an evil tyranny. Approaching the history of that war from an unfrequented avenue, the author brilliantly defends upholding of moral principles and imperatives in the course of war, irrespectively of how evil and monstrous our enemy is. He exposes a tremendous impact of the choices made under fire, be it by the Commander in Chief or by a foot soldier on the results of the struggle and on its perception decades after. Ultimately, keeping our hands clean is not only a moral but also a political imperative.

On the background of an impressive and vast panorama of WW II Bess exposes diverging perceptions between and within the major participating countries of the legacy of that war and asks Did we learn anything?" Certainly he is among those who did. Making a strong case for a need to follow the internationalist impulse in relations between countries and for the reconciliation between former enemies he articulates lessons which are far from a universal recognition but absorbed by many already.

I read the book from a multiple perspective of a veteran of WW II (fighting the Germans in Warsaw,Poland), a prisoner in a German P.O.W. camp, a former UN staff member and peacekeeper, and a resident of Germany now. In a rewarding experience I found myself in a full accord with the author's incisive insight into the neglected aspects of that titanic struggle and with his conclusions.

It is definitely the most important book about the WW II I ever read and I recommend it to everyone interested in explaining our present by understanding the past. It reads well and leaves you with a rich plate of food for thought.

Editorial Review:

World War II was the quintessential “good war.” It was not, however, a conflict free of moral ambiguity, painful dilemmas, and unavoidable compromises. Was the bombing of civilian populations in Germany and Japan justified? Were the Nuremberg and Tokyo war crimes trials legally scrupulous? What is the legacy bequeathed to the world by Hiroshima? With wisdom and clarity, Michael Bess brings a fresh eye to these difficult questions and others, arguing eloquently against the binaries of honor and dishonor, pride and shame, and points instead toward a nuanced reckoning with one of the most pivotal conflicts in human history.

Extremely user friendly & well organized! I highly recommend 5 out of 5 stars.

After reviewing several books on etiquette and manners, I found this to be the easiest to use. It is specifically geared to families and includes some cute illustrations to emphasize the points. The book is laid out with topics that range from 1 to 3 pages and covers everything from introductions to conversation starters; manners at fast food restaurants to gourmet restaurants. Every morning, I read one page from the book to my two children (ages 2 & 5) and practice one of the principles read on the page. For example, both of my children now know the 5 S's of introduction (Stand, Smile, Shake, See {look in the eyes}, and Say {It's nice to meet you}. If you're looking for a great book to teach manners, common courtesy, etiquette, and the reason why behind the manners, this is the book for you!

The Family Book of Manners 5 out of 5 stars.

I found this book in the library and brought it home to read with my 11 year old. At first he was full of animosity, thinking he was above it, then he started to really get into it. By the middle of the book I knew I had to have a copy for the home. Fortunately I was able to buy a used copy at Amazon. The book is currently out of print. It is a wonderful manners book for the Christian family, full of good solid advice and fun to read.

Editorial Review:

Here, at last is a book of "uncommon common sense" for young people by someone who has worked with them for thirty-five years. F. Washington Jarvis is one of the nation s most eminent educators, now in his twenty-eighth year as headmaster of Boston's Roxbury Latin School, the oldest school in continuous operation in North America.

Jarvis s approach is anecdotal. "If it is true that a picture is worth a thousand words, it is ten times as true when you are speaking to young teenagers. They are gripped by the story of how real people cope with real situations. They are interested when you share with them the concrete realities of your own life and experience, and they are almost always willing to listen to adults who actually believe in something, who actually stand for something."

Jarvis's addresses, reprinted from his school's publications, have enjoyed something of a cult "underground" circulation among young people - and their parents and grandparents. Now his "top hits" have been brought together in a single volume for wider circulation.

The author never talks down to his audience. He knows that - appearances to the contrary - students are asking the deepest questions, questions about whether life has meaning and purpose. He also knows that teenagers often find themselves caught by surprise in situations where they have to make tough decisions. And he believes that they are willing, even eager, to know how others have coped in similar situations.

This is a book of deep and practical wisdom, one of our surprise "bestsellers" in hardcover, and now available in softcover to serve an even wider audience.

Editorial Review:

Here is a wealth of astute and warmhearted counsel on many of life’s most difficult ethical dilemmas. Joseph Telushkin outlines his ten commandments of character, explaining why each one is so vital, and then addresses perplexing issues that can and often do crop up in our lives relating to family, friends, work, community, medical ethics, and money, such as:

• How honest should you be when you are asked to give a reference?
• How much assistance should you give your son with his college application essay?
• Is it wrong to receive a kidney from an executed prisoner in China?
• What should you do if your father begs you to end his life rather than allow him to descend into the hell of Alzheimer’s?
• Should a brother give up part of his inheritance if his sister has children and considerable expenses and he doesn’t?
• Should a dying woman reveal to her husband that their son is not really his?

Many of us are finding it increasingly hard to tread the fine line between right and wrong. In The Ten Commandments of Character, Telushkin faces these issues squarely and shows us how to live a life of true integrity.

“At a time when so many people are looking for moral guidance, we are lucky to have Joseph Telushkin as our guide and teacher. I am thoroughly impressed by his wisdom and good sense.”—Rabbi Harold Kushner, author of When Bad Things Happen to Good People

Thoroughly 'parent friendly' and highly recommended 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The collaborative work of academician Bettie B. Youngs, clinical psychologist and philanthropist Joanne Wolf, business entrepreneur Joani Wafer, and cultural anthropologist Dawn Lehman, "Teaching Kids To Care: Nurturing Character And Compassion" focuses upon assisting parents to instill life-enhancing values into the characters of their children through the repeated practice of caring for others (and for themselves) through the five 'touchstones' of Interdependence, Connection, Perspective, Gratitude, and Inspiration. Of special note are the chapters devoted to 'Inspiring Testimonials from Kids Korps USA Experiences'; 'Kids Korps USA'; and 'Creating a Caring Epidemic in Your Community'. Enhanced with two appendices (Resources for Teaching Kids to Care and Suggested Reading), as well as extensive Endnotes, "Teaching Kids To Care" is thoroughly 'parent friendly' and highly recommended for personal, academic, and community library Parenting Skills Development reference collections and supplemental reading lists.

Editorial Review:

"Dreaming about a child's future begins long before the child is actually born. We wish for them to be happy, successful, well adjusted and healthy. Unfortunately, the world sends mixed messages and children do not just download these qualities. How do we as parents ensure that our children have the empathy and integrity that we dreamed they would? How do we fight the all too human attributes of selfishness, self-absorption, complacency, bullying and isolation and teach children to care?" --from Teaching Kids to Care

The award-winning Kids Korps founders present parents with a fresh framework and the tools necessary to shape children into productive, well-adjusted, compassionate individuals. By focusing on the five caring Touchstones, they offer ways to surround their children with actions and messages designed to strengthen character, build self-esteem and develop inner contentment.

Editorial Review:

Will meat eaters get into heaven? Do trees have rights? Is it ever right to design a baby? What would you do? Would you always do the right thing? IS there a right thing? In this second edition of his thought-provoking and highly engaging introduction to ethics, Martin Cohen brings us eleven brand new ethical dilemmas including:

  • The Dodgy Donor Clinic
  • The Famous Footbridge Dilemma
  • The Human Canonball.

From overcrowded lifeboats to the censor's pen, Martin Cohen's stimulating and amusing dilemmas reveal the subtleties, complexities and contradictions that make up the rich tapestry of ethics. From DIY babies and breeding experiments to 'Twinkies courtroom drama' and Newgate Prison, there is a dilemma for everyone. Dilemmas from the worlds of medical, business, legal and war ethics; dilemmas in the shape of beautiful and ugly sisters, frogs, kings, ancient volcanic islands and suspiciously exotic villages. This book may not help you become a good person, but at least you will have had a good think about it.

Practical, enjoyable and life-changing little book! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I don't know any parents who really want to raise spoiled, self-centered children - but what can parents actually do to counter our me-first culture? This little book from two financial planners has some great ideas for parents to begin to teach the concept of giving at a very young age - and to make giving an intentional part of their lives, not just a once-a-year activity around the holidays. The book is filled with practical suggestions specifically for ages from three years old all the way into the teenage years as well as wonderful quotes about the importance of giving and various organizations and opportunities to give. And giving is much more than just a financial decision - O'Donnell and Baker recognize the need to give of a person's time and talents as well. The idea of this book is to help parents plan activities and opportunities to give to teach their children that giving truly is better than receiving!

While the book is not explicitly Christian, the principles are consistent with biblical teachings on giving and this would make a wonderful gift for any parent. Practical, easy-to-read, enjoyable and life-changing - all that in a little book titled Generous Kids! The book is probably worth the money just for the final segment titled Seven Ways to Grow a Selfish Kid - far too many parents are making these mistakes and the results will be a self-centered, egotistical adult one day. Another book along this same vein is Dr. Robert Shaw's outstanding work titled The Epidemic: The Rot of American Culture, Absentee and Permissive Parenting, and the Resultant Plague of Joyless, Selfish Children. Shaw's book is not biblically-based, but it is worth the read for parents whose lives are too busy to raise their children with proper boundaries.

Editorial Review:

This simple book will help parents make giving a fun and fulfilling part of their children's lives through learning the habit of giving. It's an easy-to-read book full of entertaining and practical suggestions, amazing true stories, simple examples, and plenty of "We can do that too!" take-aways for busy moms and dads.

Thank You. Finally someone has written a useful as well as funny book on teaching (or trying to) your children good manners. The book offers excellent and practical advice on a host of issues that every parent confronts on a daily basis. The illustrations are hilarious, the writing is insightful, and was obviously written by someone who's been there, done that. Miss Manners for the new millenium

Each chapter tackles a different situation, gives a brief outline of what manners are appropriate for it, and offers advice on how to teach and reinforce them to children of different ages. There is also a “What to Expect” chart broken down by age, and a Q & A section devoted to questions concerning children and manners.
