Outstanding Resource 5 out of 5 stars.

I am a classroom teacher (third grade) and a graduate student researching Asperger's. I have been looking for a guide for the classrom teacher that fully incorporates all of the needed information to help these kids succeed in the classroom - I FOUND IT!! - This book is just the best - it is written in language easy to relate to as a teacher. It is in-depth -covering all areas of concern - including classroom and curriculum accomodations, yet brief enough to read in a week or so. I will keep it on my desk as a "go to" book. If you are teaching a child with AS - you need this book.

Editorial Review:

The fourth book in the popular Practical Solution series is what teachers and parents have been waiting for...practical solutions for addressing the academic and social needs of elementary-aged children with Asperger Syndrome. Specific topics include organizational accommodations, accommodations in the curriculum, developing social skills and the importance of home-school communication. Lots of forms, checklists and other visuals make these helpful ideas easy to implement.

Editorial Review:

Unschooling, a homeschooling method based on the belief that kids learn best when allowed to pursue their natural curiosities and interests, is practiced by 10 to 15 percent of the estimated 1.5 million homeschoolers in the United States. There is no curriculum or master plan for allowing children to decide when, what, and how they will learn, but veteran homeschooler Mary Griffith comes as close as you can get in this slim manual. Written in a conversational, salon-style manner, The Unschooling Handbook is liberally peppered with anecdotes and practical advice from unschoolers, identified by their first names and home states. The book also includes resources such as one teenager's sample "transcript," a typical weekly log of a third-grader's activities, and helpful lists of magazines, online mailing lists, Web sites, and catalogs. Griffith, a board member of the Homeschool Association of California (and the author of The Homeschooling Handbook), names Margaret Mead and Thomas Edison as two examples of those who have profited from unschooled childhoods, and further claims that research validates support for this controversial form of education. The "evidence" she cites, however, is predominantly theoretical writings from noted educators about the benefits of child-centered learning. The handbook suffers from a mild case of the Lake Wobegone syndrome--every unschooled children is seen as an above-average self-starter on the verge of genius--yet despite this overly rosy approach, the book is a well-organized guide for homeschoolers and other families contemplating the "un" life. --Jodi Mailander Farrell

Easy to Read and Full of Great Academic Studies! 5 out of 5 stars.

Chapter Two on Learning a First Language is the best thing I have read on First Language Acquisition and I plan to tell the professors where I work that this is the text they should use for their courses on First and Second Language Acquisition (which I have taught for four years). The information is presented in a concise and easy to understand manner so that scholars and parents alike will find it useful and interesting. I think any parent or scholar would find this a useful resource whether they are looking to understand their child's development or trying to find research to back their claims on the benefits of bilingualism. This book is a gold mine of information backed in research. There is nothing that I have read so far on the market that explains all this in such detail and in such a easy way to understand. This is a must as a textbook for a class on language acquisition or as a manual for parents to use as a reference.

A SIGH OF RELIEF FOR ATTEMPTING TO BE BILINGUAL AT HOME
After reading the introduction and the first chapter on The benefits of Childhood Bilingualism, I breathed a sigh of relief. I did not know until reading this book that there were so many other parents like myself who did not grow up speaking another language, yet they are teaching a second language to their children. The book discusses the phenomenon of so many Americans in this generation having the opportunity to travel and experience other languages and cultures. This has created a niche of people in the U.S. who are raising their children with the values and languages they acquired abroad. I live in an English-Only state with everyone questioning my reasons for bringing up my daughter in the two languages of Spanish and English. It is nice to find a home for my feelings and know there is a larger community of people out there who are following in the same footsteps towards bilingualism. Thank you for giving me hope and appreciation for what I am attempting to do by publishing this book.

Editorial Review:

If you would like your children to experience the benefits of becoming bilingual, but you aren’t sure how to teach them a second language, then Raising a Bilingual Child is the perfect step-by-step guide for you.

Raising a Bilingual Child provides parents with information, encouragement, and practical advice for creating a positive bilingual environment. It offers both an overview of why parents should raise their children to speak more than one language and detailed steps parents can take to integrate two languages into their child’s daily routine.

Raising a Bilingual Child
also includes inspirational first-hand accounts from parents. It dispels the myth that bilingualism may hinder a child’s academic performance and explains that learning languages at a young age can actually enhance a child’s overall intellectual development.

Fantastic! 5 out of 5 stars.

I took this book out of the library hoping it would have some fun ideas for my four year old. I was not disappointed! The games are lots of fun and I appreciate that the author takes the time to explain what they are learning. We're only doing section one because of my daughter's age, but flipping through the book the other sections look good too. I am definitely buying this one and intend to look at the other books by this author too. I highly recommend this for any child!

A good book for all grade levels 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book based on the reviews I had seen on Amazon. I was hoping that it would be a book that was chock full of ideas for my Kindergarten classroom. I have gotten a few ideas, but it seemed to really focus more on grades 2-3.

Practical, helpful information. 5 out of 5 stars.

When you know what behaviors are "normal" for your child's age you can relax, stop the worry, and focus on appropriate solutions. This whole series of books accurately defines the ages and stages of children. These books keep your expectations realistic and allow you to avoid anger caused by a lack of understanding of your child's developmental stages.

Editorial Review:

What happened to that sunny outgoing child of eight?  As parents of nine-year-olds often discover, nine is a tricky age.  Children are more distant from Mother and Father; they're more independant and rely on friends for companionship, or they have a tendency to spend time alone.  Some nines are boisterous and wild, others thoughtful and withdrawn.  Helping parents learn how to cope with the unpredictable nine-year-old is the aim of this practical guide from the Gesell Institute.

Nine-year-olds are hovering on the brink of adolescence, and this in part contributes to their up-and-down nature.  Dr. Louis Bates Ames and Carol Chase Haber paint a vivid picture of the child at this age and offer useful advice to make life easier for parents and children alike.

Good information - not my favorite writing 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is interesting, & I agree with the information presented. I like how the authors cite research studies to support their ideas/recommendations. I also found the information on how children learn math & reading very interesting.

I read the book straight through over a couple of weeks & found it quite repetitive (I realize that the book is also meant to be read in segments). There are a couple of paragraphs in different chapters that are virtually identical. I also think the authors discouraged flash cards at least 20 times, which I found annoying.

Editorial Review:

Now Available in Paperback!

In this book two highly credentialed child psychologists offer a compelling indictment of the growing trend toward accelerated learning. It's a message that stressed-out parents are craving to hear: Letting tots learn through play is not only okay-it's better than drilling academics!

Drawing on overwhelming scientific evidence from their own studies and the collective research results of child development experts, and addressing the key areas of development-math, reading, verbal communication, science, self-awareness, and social skills-the authors explain the process of learning from a child's point of view. They then offer parents 40 age-appropriate games for creative play. These simple, fun--yet powerful exercises work as well or better than expensive high-tech gadgets to teach a child what his ever-active, playful mind is craving to learn.

Editorial Review:

Suddenly they go from striving for A’s to barely passing, from fretting about cooties to obsessing for hours about crushes. Former chatterboxes answer in monosyllables; freethinkers mimic everything from clothes to opinions. Their bodies and psyches morph through the most radical changes since infancy. They are kids in the middle-school years, the age every adult remembers well enough to dread.

Here at last is an up-to-date anthropology of this critically formative period. Prize-winning education reporter Linda Perlstein spent a year immersed in the lunchroom, classrooms, hearts, and minds of a group of suburban Maryland middle schoolers and emerged with this pathbreaking account. Perlstein reveals what’s really going on under kids’ don’t-touch-me facade while they grapple with schoolwork, puberty, romance, and identity. A must-read for parents and educators, Not Much Just Chillin’ offers a trail map to the baffling no-man’s-land between child and teen.

Editorial Review:

Now in paperback, a cutting-edge handbook for parents from a pioneer in infant brain development

Should you really read to your baby? Can teaching a baby sign language boost IQ? Should you pipe classical music into the nursery? Dr. Stamm translates the latest neuroscience findings into clear explanations and practical suggestions, demonstrating the importance of the simple ways you interact with your child every day. It isn’t the right “edu-tainment” that nurtures an infant’s brain. It is as simple as Attention, Bonding, and Communication, and it’s within every parent’s ability to provide. Practical games and tips for each developmental age group will show you not only what the latest findings are but, more importantly, tell you what to do with them.

A MUST read by every parent who wants to understand their child! 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I loved this book! I purchased this book when my son was 4. I wanted to know how he thought and what made him tick. It wasn't much good to me then. He wasn't developed enough in his personality yet for me to see the behaviors of each style. He is now 7 and this book has helped greatly!

He was starting to stuggle in school this year. He kept falling behind in class, wouldn't get his work done, easily distracted, very social, etc. I had paragraphs highlited and wrote his name in. There were things in there that fit him to a "T". C.U.T. notes in her book that no one is specifically one learning style. I have found that it depends on the subject with him. In phonics, he's auditory, in math he's visual, etc. The big deal for me was that I finally understood how he PERCEIVES his world!!! He's global and random. Once I got the definitions of what those were, we got a long MUCH better. I am the polar opposite of him and there were many times we seemed to be speaking two different languages. This book, for us, was like having a translator.

One note: We have not discovered his environmental preference. I'm not sure he's developed a pattern for me to discern this yet, but I'm sure it will come as he gets older.

I can see why some said that the book was out of context, but for now, it's one of the best books out there, even if Gregoric doesn't believe in applying it to children across the board. Everyone changes and develops and different levels and stages in life. What we might do and not think about at 17, we would rethink at 30. All in all, though for us, it's been a LIFESAVER!!
