Note that this book will not tell you how to discipline or punish your child. Nor will it teach you how to "make" your child "mind you." This book WILL teach you how to engage cooperation without disrespecting your child. The skills taught here will take a lot of practice. It may be several weeks before results are apparent. My son is not an "easygoing" child, but this book has changed our relationship. I now have read it several times and continue to re-read it whenever my son goes through a transition. The skills taught are simple but they really work!

The book can be used alone or in parenting groups, and the solid tools provided are appropriate for kids of all ages.

As an idealistic twenty-three-year-old English teacher at Wilson High School in Long beach, California, Erin Gruwell confronted a room of “unteachable, at-risk” students. This is a survival guide for parents who find themselves marooned among volatile and incomprehensible aliens on Planet Teen. Area maps cover the obvious ground--there are chapters on school, sex, suicide, and so on--but it's the title of Chapter 2, "What They Do and Why," that best captures the book's spirit and technique. Anthony Wolf's modus operandi is not so much to make pronouncements about what parents should do, as to explain adolescent behavior in a way that's bound to leave parents with a changed view of the plausible options. Wolf is a clinical psychologist, and his writing is clear--even witty--and he doesn't resort to jargon. The expository text is punctuated with snatches of illustrative dialogue, which serve as concrete examples and help parents learn how to see, anticipate, and avoid "bad strategies." (One key mistake is getting dragged into no-win conflicts instead of having the wisdom to shut up at the moment when shutting up would be most effective--albeit the least satisfying--thing to do.) There are also some nicely tongue-in-cheek samples of "ideal" communication--the stuff we imagine might get said if only we were better parents. After one such rosily cooperative and considerate interchange between a father and his adolescent son, Wolf offers the following two-edged comfort: "The above conversation has never happened. Never. This is a recipe book, and that's it. Perfect if that's what you're looking for, but if you live in the real world and eat out from time to time there really are no good tips in here. Essentially what you get is, "cook for yourself" or "learn to punch your way out of a wet paper bag" (I choose the latter for hopefully obvious reasons). Thinking for yourself isn't overrated after all!

I loved this book, it helped my break done the dos and donts for being a first timer. I am hungry all the time and it really helped me break down the good and bad calories. I have always struggled with eating healthy, and this did wonders for me.

As a concerned grandparent, I would highly recommend this book to any mother with a problem teen. I gave this book as a Christmas present to my daughter-in-law, which was recommended by her daughter's couselor.
This book is an easy read and gives great support to both parents and teens.

As the parents of 3 adolescents with some significant cultural struggles, this book was is so helpful in changing our parenting techniques from being the authorities to being more "consultants."

There's an incredible relief when the responsibility for making decisions belongs to the teen, and the consequences of the decisions also belongs to the teen. I recommend this book as training in parenting for those of us who think we know how to raise teens, but find our teens are struggling, and it's clear we DON'T know how to do it.

This book is another liberal approach to raising teenagers, but it does have some good ideas about communication, i.e., asking questions rather than giving orders. The writers espouse no punishment because the child doesn't get punishment in the "real world." The examples of handling situations with teens include, "What to do when the police call and have your son in jail." Most teens discussed are in serious trouble and have poor relationships with their parents. The kids are in charge in these households, not the parents. (The parents never read, DARE TO DISCIPLINE!) If you are desiring to improve relationships with adjusted children, this book is not for you, even though the writers have a few good ideas.

I am a probation officer that teaches a parenting class for parents of strong-willed or out-of-control teenagers. I personally believe in this book so much that I purchase them, out-of-pocket, to give to parents who have perfect attendance in my class. This book has helped them not only with their teenagers, but also with all their relationships.

Great resource for parents on how to help your children feel loved and appreciated. Helps to build their self confidence and show them that they are valuable and special. The book has many insights into the teens thoughts and needs at this stage in their lives. I will listen to it over and over.

Hopefully there are better books for our girls than this ... 1 out of 5 stars.

While the book had some insights, I nevertheless found it simplistic, unscientific and disappointing. Whoever gave Mary Pipher her Ph.D. must be cringing. The usual suspects are to blame for the problems plagueing our young girls, including the 'feminist' fan favorite, the 'girl-poisioning' society. If you like this kind of pop psychology, then this book is for you. If you are a more serious reader, then move onto something else and save your money. I particularly like the section in the book where Dr. Pipher mentions that '...she knows very little about [the psychology] of boys...' and then spends the next several pages proving it. It can be argued that growing up today is harder than in previous generations and our young girls need help. Sadly, so does this book.

Many lose spark, interest, and even IQ points as a "girl-poisoning" society forces a choice between being shunned for staying true to oneself and struggling to stay within a narrow definition of female. Pipher's alarming tales of a generation swamped by pain may be partly informed by her role as a therapist who sees troubled children and teens, but her sketch of a tougher, more menacing world for girls often hits the mark. She offers some prescriptions for changing society and helping girls resist.

this is a fabulous book. the love of money over people and the disregard for substantive values are destroying our society. this book sheds a great deal of light on the ways that we are hurting our children and ourselves. it is extremely well-written and intelligent. you won't be disappointed.
