Editorial Review:

Hard, visual data make a compelling case for the existence of attention deficit disorder (ADD) in this pioneering work by Daniel G. Amen, M.D. Using a nuclear medicine technique called "single photon emission computed tomography" (SPECT)--a controversial step, according to some of his peers--Dr. Amen scans patients' brains to identify various abnormalities. From more than 8,000 such studies and more than 12,000 patient evaluations, Dr. Amen concludes that six--not the formerly presumed two--different types of ADD exist. This book encompasses the full spectrum of Dr. Amen's work: from symptom identification to clinical evaluation, to diet and medication recommendations, to everyday strategies for living with ADD (whether the reader is a parent of an ADD child, or has been diagnosed with the disease.)

No stranger to the skepticism surrounding this topic, Dr. Amen begins with a list of dead-on myths (including "ADD is overdiagnosed") and surprising facts ("Many people with ADD are never hyperactive"). From this intriguing beginning flows a highly readable chapter on the signs and manifestations of ADD in all ages. Dr. Amen's full description of SPECT imaging includes multiple brain scan photos that nicely support his theories. But the most satisfying element of this well-researched presentation occurs in the final half of the book; here, Amen thoroughly explores the biological (diet, exercise, medication), psychological (from personal coaching to psychotherapy), and social support (parenting and school strategies) needed to heal each type of ADD. This book will prove a valuable tool for parents, adult sufferers, and medical professionals seeking practical support for managing this increasingly recognized condition. --Liane Thomas

Editorial Review:

Medication? Maybe. Marry the right person and find the right job? A must if you are an adult suffering from ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder). So say psychiatrists Edward M. Hallowell and John J. Ratey, authors of the influential Driven to Distraction, published in 1994. In their new book, Delivered from Distraction, Hallowell and Ratey survey the current medical landscape concerning ADD, combining their own clinical observations with the latest research to paint a much more complex and, in many ways, positive picture of the condition than has generally been presented.

Hallowell and Ratey embrace the idea that success in life comes more from playing to your strengths than overcoming your weaknesses. In the case of a person with ADD (child or adult), these strengths often include unusually high levels of creativity, charisma, intelligence, and energy. The authors insist that, while medication and other treatments can sometimes work wonders in reducing limitations, surrounding yourself with people who promote these positive traits, be they in your personal or professional life, is the single most important element to living well with ADD. As both Hallowell and Ratey are not only experts in the field, but "ADDers" themselves, the tips and stories they share for how to do so are fresh, funny, and far more helpful than tired arguments over drugs verse no drugs or whether there's even such a thing as ADD at all.--Patrick Jennings

Rich Content 4 out of 5 stars.

I like the detailed listing of all the different kinds of conditions, which puts things in perspective. It has also helped me weed through so much of the hype found on various quack web sites. I shared the book with my mother-in-law and she has found it useful too. This book is informative.

The best I have read... 5 out of 5 stars.

With my son's recent diagnosis of sensory problems, I have really been accumulating a library of books on the subject. This books is BY FAR my favorite... I am only half-way through it and have already dog-eared half of the pages I have read. It is packed with practical suggestions/solutions on how to help your sensory child cope with everyday life. If you are only going to buy one book, this should be it.

Editorial Review:

For children with sensory integration issues-those who have difficulty processing everyday sensations and exhibit unusual behaviors such as avoiding or seeking out touch, movement, sounds, and sights-this groundbreaking book is an invaluable resource. Long thought to affect only autistic children, or mistaken for ADHD, SI dysfunction is finally being recognized as a separate condition. Coauthored by a pediatric occupational therapist and a parent of a child with SI dysfunction, Raising a Sensory Smart Child is as warm and accessible as it is authoritative and detailed and is an indispensable guide for parents, therapists, and teachers who will turn to it again and again.

Decent, depending on what kind of help you need 3 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

This was one of the first books I read on Adult ADD, and I liked it. It did have allot of good ideas, and covers just about all areas. If you need help with organization and time management, I'd recommend "ADD Friendly Ways to Organize Your Life" before this book, but if your focus isn't on just those two issues, this book has broader info, covering other topics, such as the workplace and social skills. So, get this book depending on your needs.

Editorial Review:

People think of ADD as a kid's problem. But kids grow up. Many adults also struggle with ADD. There are book resources on the market for these folks. But they are often too long. Or too complicated. Or too dry and clinical. Adults with ADD need straightforward tools for coping with real experiences. This book offers exactly what they need.

Each chapter takes up an issue pertinent to adults with ADD: "My mind wanders" "I'm always misplacing things." "I have trouble keeping friends." "I have a hard time getting started." In no more than five to seven pages, the book outlines strategies for each problem that are simple to put into practice. If you're struggling with adult ADD, the information in this book offers you immediate and lasting rewards: better concentration, sharper memory, enhanced focus, and greater self-confidence.

Very helpful without being preachy 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

I found the information in this book very helpful. It is easy to read and understand. It is encouraging. It provides insight into what's going on when you're trying to cast off old ways of living that hold you back.

This book is worth reading, not only for the information to help you grow personally, but to be more aware and understanding of others in your life.

Although the authors may be religious, this does not come across heavily in the book and would not complicate a non-religious person using the information and insights to change things they don't like.

Editorial Review:

These bestselling doctors walk you through their ten proven stages to recovery from codependency that results from external circustances. Humans are susceptible to codependency because of our sinful tendency to use defense mechanisms to fool ourselves. In codependent relationships, deceitful games are played, and important Christian principles are often taken out of context and abused. God wants us to have healthy relationships with a balance between being dependent and independent. The doctors describe how the most effective means of overcoming codependent relationships is to establish or deepen a relationship with Christ Himself. They describe the causes of codependency, pointing out the factors that perpetuate it, and lead readers through their ten stages of recovery.

EXCELLENT TIPS 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I've read a LOT of books on Autism and on Asperger's in the last 6 years. This one gets an A+. It's a fast read and has a lot of clear and concise tips to implement in additional ways that us inventive and creative parents may not have thought of already, or if you've hit a dead end and need some help!

EXCELLENT!!

Editorial Review:

For parents of children with Asperger Syndrome (AS) ordinary care and parenting just doesn't always do it - AS kids need a different approach. Brenda is mother to eleven-year-old Kenneth Hall, author of Asperger Syndrome, the Universe and Everything, and since his diagnosis at the age of eight she has gathered together the parenting ideas and tips that have had a positive effect on Kenneth's life. Among other aspects, Brenda discusses parents' reaction to their child's AS, from pre-diagnosis to acceptance of the condition, and gives advice on how parents can better understand 'Planet Asperger'. With an extensive section of practical tips for issues such as anger management and communication, this book will help parents to respond positively to the challenge of AS and find the 'treasure' in their child's way of being.

Very User Friendly 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I like the variety of ways that the stories can be presented to the student. The stories may be cut into conceptual thoughts, or put into a three-ring binder, placing the pages in plastic sheets, just to name a couple. It leaves room also for filling in any missing pieces of the Social Story puzzle, dependending on the circumstance.

Pretty Good 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 8 people found this review helpful.

This book was pretty helpful. It covered most topics that I was looking for.

Sentences too long and abstract 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

My daughter is 5, she is not interested. She does not like "sometimes", or "some kids". She wants stories from life about kids and adults. She does not like abstract reasoning in long sentences.
But stories in a book are easy to rewrite for her. And they are good guide of what should be done. Such as "Tom saw this and did that. Teacher was happy. Bob saw that and did this. Teacher was sad."

Editorial Review:

Selected by "Library Journal" as "Essential for All Collections," Gray's "The New Social Story Book" contains her groundbreaking concepts that are being used all over the world to teach vital social and functional skills to children with autism. Illustrations.
