So far my husband and I have found this book to be very helpful, we have only had it a month and are both taking medical terminology. He's taking the class for a biology degree, and I'm taking the class for massage therapy. Every time we have looked up a word, it has been there. If it needs a picture, there is one. It always gives you the root word with prefix and suffix separated and what language the word came from. The thumb index makes it much easier to find pages quickly than the books that don't have them. The definitions are easy to understand and are oftentimes more helpful than the definitions in either of our textbooks.

Choose the 1818 version 4 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Most editions of Mary Shelley's landmark book available today follow the heavily revised 1831 version. The impulse behind this trend is an honorable one (to present what is seemingly an author's "final revision"),but the 1818 version is preferable for many reasons. Looking back on her creation in later life, Shelley felt obliged to alter the book's focus in significant ways, adding what critic Marilyn Butler accurately describes as "long passages in which her main narrator, [Victor] Frankenstein, expresses religious remorse for making a creature..." The author sought to make the 1831 edition less controversial and thereby more palatable to the tastes of the reading public. The 1818 version is closer to Mary Shelley's original intentions, though it too, unfortunately, was filtered through the sensibilities of her husband, the poet Percy Shelley, who took many of his wife's rather straightforward passages and rendered them into his own more ornate and Ciceronian style. Still, the 1818 version remains more vital, more original, and less constrained by what the author believed would be acceptable to readers in 1830s England.

Editorial Review:

Mary Shelley was only 19 when she composed this chilling fable of a scientist and his misshapen creation. The novel was a bestseller upon its publication in 1818, and it is now revised to collate the texts of 1818 and 1813 in a new, definitive edition.

Editorial Review:

Benjamin Franklin is the founding father who winks at us, the one who seems made of flesh rather than marble. In this authoritative and engrossing full-scale biography, Walter Isaacson shows how the most fascinating of America's founders helped define our national character.

In a sweeping narrative that follows Franklin's life from Boston to Philadelphia to London and Paris and back, Isaacson chronicles the adventures of the spunky runaway apprentice who became, during his 84-year life, America's best writer, inventor, media baron, scientist, diplomat, and business strategist, as well as one of its most practical and ingenious political leaders. He explores the wit behind Poor Richard's Almanac and the wisdom behind the Declaration of Independence, the new nation's alliance with France, the treaty that ended the Revolution, and the compromises that created a near-perfect Constitution.

Above all, Isaacson shows how Franklin's unwavering faith in the wisdom of the common citizen and his instinctive appreciation for the possibilities of democracy helped to forge an American national identity based on the virtues and values of its middle class.

Asking All The Right Questions 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

"The Elements of Moral Philosophy" is a fabulous, non-technical introduction to ethics. The writing is clear and historically informed, the main schools of thought are covered, and Rachels doesn't pretend that he's found all the answers to very difficult questions. I can't think of a better book for a college student who is new to philosophical ethics and wants to get a feel for how philosophers approach these issues.

I was struck by the handful of super-negative Amazon reviews. I suspect they were written by students who were forced to read the book for a class and either expected something else or were put off by Rachels' respectful but negative treatment of religious-based ethics. Ignore them.

Editorial Review:

Firmly established as the standard text for undergraduate courses in ethics, this concise, lively book combines clear explanations of the main theories of ethics with discussions of interesting examples. Topics covered include famine relief, homosexuality, and the treatment of animals. The text's versatility allows it to be widely used not only in ethical theory courses, but also in applied ethics courses of all kinds.

great for the visual learner 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I lost track of a previous version of this software and was very excited to find this again. The previous version was seperated onto multiple discs and less efficient with crossover between the body systems. This is a good investment for any visual learner who needs to learn or review gross anatomy. There are a number of views and/or animations for most of the subjects. My only criticisms are: a shortage of material for the reproductive systems and the program can require a large amount of system resources.

    Editorial Review:

Anatomy & Physiology Revealed is the ultimate interactive cadaver dissection experience. This state-of-the-art tutorial uses cadaver photos combined with a layering technique that allows the student to peel away layers of the human body to reveal structures beneath the surface. Anatomy & Physiology Revealed offers animations, radiologic imaging, audio pronunciations, and a comprehensive quizzing tool. This tutorial can be used as part of any one or two semester undergraduate Anatomy & Physiology course; it is available as a stand-alone or can be combined with any of McGraw-Hill's Anatomy & Physiology textbooks.

pretty good 3 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

this is not a bad spanish book. i don't know if i would say it is great. lots of group activities that are helpful, but they are pretty simple and repetitive. they need to be a little more thoughtful and put in lots of DIFFERENT activities. one last, quite frustrating thing, there is only a spanish-english dictionary in the back. extremely irritating because this is a spanish 1-2 book, and anytime you want to look up a word, you'll need to consult another dictionary.

    Editorial Review:

Based on the Natural Approach, Dos mundos stresses the use of engaging activities and interesting readings in a natural and spontaneous classroom atmosphere. In this comprehension-based approach to learning language, the development of communicative language skills is the central goal, with formal grammar presentation and grammar practice at the service of communication. The text is designed so that class time can be devoted to exposing students to Spanish through creative activities and readings, allowing grammar explanations and exercises to be studied outside the classroom.

My wife and I purchased this book as a graduation present for our daughter who recently graduated from the University of Hawaii School of Medicine, Masters in Speech Pathology program. Great dictionary! The pictures are clear and detailed. It came with a CD that was broken so I called the 800 number listed in the book...they were very nice and mailed a new one to me asap (at no cost to me). The book is very large and heavy so you need to be at a desk or table when using it. I am very satisfied.

great text 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is a great way to learn medical terminology. It's easy to understand, interesting and presented in a way that makes it easier to learn than just straight memorization. I am planning on keeping this book and not reselling it, because I think it will be a great reference for future classes as well.

Execellent book 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This book was very easy to use. It was just like vocabulary books you had in middle school. You start off learning things like prefixes, root words, suffixes etc. Then they start putting words together. It will help you understand medical terms when you break them down. The flash cards also help.

A bit too simplistic 2 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I took a course in medical terminology as part of an online degree program, and the course utilized this textbook which, after a chapter or two, bored me to tears.

The information is good if medical terminology is something you're unfamiliar with. However, I work as a medical transcriptionist and am quite familiar with many medical terms. I've also taken both high school and university-level classes in anatomy and physiology, so much of the information here simply felt like a retread of what I already knew.

I didn't use the CD or flash cards that came with the textbook but, for the beginner, they might prove useful. For me, however, the book was too simplistic.

This workbook was recommended to accompany the most recent edition of my Spanish Textbook (which I also ordered from Amazon). My professor required that we purchase the workbook, however the one Amazon recommended was not the correct workbook edition. I had to go through a lot of trouble and wasted a great amount of time and money by returning the books to Amazon and having to purchase them in a package from my local textbook store.
