I love this book. People are saying that the questions in this one and the verbal and math supplements books are the same so I went to Barnes and compared the reading comp sections and all passages were different. So...I don't know if they're comparing with the 10th edition or they're on something. If you're studying for the GMAT, at least get this book. It has a gang of questions from actual exams which is great for the verbal section because I would think verbal questions are harder to mimic than math questions.

AT LEAST PURCHASE THIS BOOK OR THE SUPPLEMENTS.

Manhattan books seem good too. I'll be ordering them within this month.

too many typos and mistakes 3 out of 5 stars.

Can't believe there are so many typos and mathematical mistakes in this OFFICIAL guide. If you have a weak mathematics background, you will be definitely confused or misled.

Best option to begin the GMAT Studies 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the best book to start the GMAT Studies. With the Official Guide you will be able to cover all important GMAT topics.

Official GMAT Review 4 out of 5 stars.

The official guide, along with the quantitative review is good for extra problems. The overall math review in both books is not that great. So if you are in need of a good math review I would turn the Ez-solutions gmat series.

made me more confused 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

The primary reason I bought this guide over the others was for the computer adaptive practice tests included on the cd-rom.

On my first practice GMAT, I found that a few of the explanations of the math problems used information not presented in the questions.

On my second practice GMAT, I found that it was recycling questions from the first practice exam. On the verbal section it gave me too many reading passages. On the math section I kept getting hard questions, depite a streak of several wrong answers.

I also found the editing in the math section to be very sloppy, and thus confusing to read.

Editorial Review:

Features:
  • NEW! Essential math basics review section with practice drills
  • 6 full-length practice tests (1 in the book, 1 online, 4 on the CD-ROM)
  • Diagnostic test to target areas for score improvement
  • Proven score-raising strategies
  • Hundreds of additional practice questions
  • Detailed answer explanations
  • Personalized online progress report that adapts to a student's goals and schedule

gmat quantitative review 3 out of 5 stars.

This book is just a copy of one part of "The Official Guide for GMAT Review, 11th Edition". If you buy that then you shouldn't be buying this book. It is just a waste of money.

GMAT Books you must have! 4 out of 5 stars.

I have been studying for GMAT for a few weeks now and I think the OG is a great source for a good practice on real GMAT questions. But having said that, use the OG only once you grasp all the basics and when you are almost ready to take the GMAT. The OG does not contain any math conceptual content, so use it only for practice towards the end.

In order to get a real GMAT prep - I would recommend you buy the set of 9 books of "EZ Solutions," or whichever book(s) you think you need most help with. These books are very detailed oriented and cover everything on the GMAT math. First use the review modules to get the concepts and then use the workbooks for practice. Some of the most challenging topics in GMAT math, such as permutation/combination, probability, geometry problems, complex word problems, etc., are brilliantly explained in these books. Also, the EZ Advanced Workbook is a "must have" if you are aiming for a high score. It may be a good idea to buy Barron's without the CD (don't waste money on the CD version for any book). After doing all this, use the OG and you will see a dramatic difference in your scores. If you still need more practice, you may consider buying the Kaplan book (but really not needed). Save your money by not buying anything else. You don't even have to take any of those pricy courses. I followed this process and my scores have jumped from the 500-range to the 700-range. Good luck!

Honest Review of GMAT Books! 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 11 people found this review helpful.

After going through all the GMAT books, here is my honest opinion about some of the most popular GMAT books:

Official Guide:
Pros - Excellent source of GMAT questions. Very well organized with real test like questions.
Cons - No review of any math content or test-taking strategies. Not enough explanations of practice questions.
Overall, the Official Guide is a must have for all test-takers. It will give you a good idea about the type of questions to expect on the GMAT; however, if you need more than just a bank of questions, you need to look at some other source.

Kaplan:
Pros - Good for additional practice questions as a supplement
Cons - Review of math content is not thorough but just the very basics. Not enough explanation of test taking strategies. Full of guessing techniques with no real mathematical solutions. Not good enough explanations of practice questions. Unrealistic questions.

Princeton:
Pros - Good for additional practice questions as a supplement
Cons - Review of math content is not thorough but just the very basics. Not enough explanation of test taking strategies. Full of guessing techniques with no real mathematical solutions. Not good enough explanations of practice questions. Weird sense of humor.

Barrons:
Pros - Good math review. Big list of questions. Good test taking strategies. Very well organized. This is by far the best of the all-in-one kinds of books.
Cons - Although the book has a good math review, it doesn't go deep enough into each concept. Not enough explanations to practice questions. Does not have a good section for logical reasoning (permutation, combination, probability, etc) questions, which is one of the most important question-type. Does not break down the concepts/questions step by step.

EZ Solutions (set of 9 books):
Pros - Thorough math review from A to Z. Effective test taking strategies. Abundant solved examples. Numerous practice exercises. Great practice question bank in basic and advanced workbooks.
As with most books, you are expected to already have a good knowledge about the various match concepts, but with these books, you can literally start from scratch and reach the most advanced level of the GMAT.
Cons - To get the best result from these books, you have to invest in buying several books (set of 9 books), but if you compare the cost and benefits, the benefits outweigh the cost, or you can buy a few not all. Missing the verbal section. This is not a good option if you are looking for a mediocre score or just looking for a very basic brush-up. Recommended for serious test takers only.

Some of the other books has no real content; whereas, there are some other books that I haven't yet had an opportunity to review, but may be some of them are good supplementary aids.

I hope my review will help some of you in making the right decision.

The Best SC Book For The GMAT 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is the best book for sentence correction, specially if English is your second language. Provides a great overview of important concepts, a grammar exercise on each topic and then points to a bunch of relevant questions in the Official Guide and GMAT Verbal review.

If you don't want to be at a serious competitive disadvantage or if you are not already god at SC, my advice is that buy this book as early as you can in your GMAT preparation period.

Editorial Review:

Sentence Correction (1 of the 8 books in Manhattan GMAT's Preparation Guide series) provides a highly organized and structured approach to the variety of questions in this verbal content area. Students are presented with every major grammatical principle and minor grammatical point tested on the GMAT.

The book offers a unique balance between two competing emphases: test-taking strategies and in-depth content understanding. Practice problem sets build specific foundational skills in each topic and include the most advanced content that many other prep books ignore. As the average GMAT score required to gain admission to top b-schools continues to rise, this guide provides test takers with the depth and volume of advanced material essential for succeeding on the GMAT's computer adaptive format. Book also includes online access to 6 full-length Simulated Practice GMAT Exams at Manhattan GMAT's website.

It gives an okay overview of the basics, but it is not challenging enough for the GRE.

Far too basic 1 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book based on amazon reviewers comments and I was wrong. This book is so simple it's not even funny. Just skimming through it, I can not even say that it will help with the GMAT in the slightest way.

For a far better math review guide for gmat preparation, I would reccommend the Arco Gmat/GRE Math review book. This book assumes you know how to add and multiply (unlike the "Ultimate" refresher) and goes through topics in great detail. I am almost done with the entire Arco book and love how it introduces new topis and gives you problems that range in difficulty - from easy to hard. This is how you build up a mathematical skillset.

Not to mention, the Arco book covers the bredth of math-related topics which are likely to appear on the GMAT.

Anyone looking to get a serious score, steer clear of this waste of $. Your $ is better spent on the Arco book.

Editorial Review:

A comprehensive math review for the GRE, GMAT, and SAT. This math refresher workbook is designed to clearly and concisely state the basic math rules and principles of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry which a student needs to master. This is accomplished through a series of carefully sequenced practice sets designed to build a student's math skills step-by-step. The workbook emphasizes basic concepts and problem solving skills. Strategies for specific question types on the GRE, GMAT, and SAT are the focus of the Lighthouse Review self study programs.

Very good for the target audience 4 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

"Very good for the target audience" - I think this sums it all. If you are someone who has not done active maths for some time now, and therefore does not remember the concepts involved very well, this is the book for you. This I will say holds true for most of the books of the Manhattan Quant series.
The Manhattan Quant series books cover the concepts only to the degree that gets asked in the GMAT, and do not overwhelm you.
Plus, as each of the Manhattan books then turns to the Official Guide for practice, each of the books has a section where the appropriate questions for that topic are numbered from the OG. They also detail the toughest of the lot from OG. Here I think the book is useful for anyone, irrespective of the personal comfort level with maths.
Therefore if you are true to yourself and practice the questions marked from OG as you go along, this would prove to an excellent resource for cracking the quant part of the GMAT.

Editorial Review:

Number Properties (1 of the 8 books in Manhattan GMAT's Preparation Guide series) provides a highly organized and structured approach to the variety of questions in this quantitative content area. Students are presented with a comprehensive analysis of the properties and rules of integers tested on the GMAT--everything from prime products to perfect squares.
