Honest Review of GMAT Books! 4 out of 5 stars.
19 of 20 people found this review helpful.

After going through all the GMAT books, here is my honest opinion about some of the most popular GMAT books:

Official Guide:
Pros - Excellent source of GMAT questions. Very well organized with real test like questions.
Cons - No review of any math content or test-taking strategies. Not enough explanations of practice questions.
Overall, the Official Guide is a must have for all test-takers. It will give you a good idea about the type of questions to expect on the GMAT; however, if you need more than just a bank of questions, you need to look at some other source.

Kaplan:
Pros - Good for additional practice questions as a supplement
Cons - Review of math content is not thorough but just the very basics. Not enough explanation of test taking strategies. Full of guessing techniques with no real mathematical solutions. Not good enough explanations of practice questions. Unrealistic questions.

Princeton:
Pros - Good for additional practice questions as a supplement
Cons - Review of math content is not thorough but just the very basics. Not enough explanation of test taking strategies. Full of guessing techniques with no real mathematical solutions. Not good enough explanations of practice questions. Weird sense of humor.

Barrons:
Pros - Good math review. Big list of questions. Good test taking strategies. Very well organized. This is by far the best of the all-in-one kinds of books.
Cons - Although the book has a good math review, it doesn't go deep enough into each concept. Not enough explanations to practice questions. Does not have a good section for logical reasoning (permutation, combination, probability, etc) questions, which is one of the most important question-type. Does not break down the concepts/questions step by step.

EZ Solutions (set of 9 books):
Pros - Thorough math review from A to Z. Effective test taking strategies. Abundant solved examples. Numerous practice exercises. Great practice question bank in basic and advanced workbooks.
As with most books, you are expected to already have a good knowledge about the various match concepts, but with these books, you can literally start from scratch and reach the most advanced level of the GMAT.
Cons - To get the best result from these books, you have to invest in buying several books (set of 9 books), but if you compare the cost and benefits, the benefits outweigh the cost, or you can buy a few not all. Missing the verbal section. This is not a good option if you are looking for a mediocre score or just looking for a very basic brush-up. Recommended for serious test takers only.

Some of the other books has no real content; whereas, there are some other books that I haven't yet had an opportunity to review, but may be some of them are good supplementary aids.

I hope my review will help some of you in making the right decision.

Editorial Review:

Comprehensive preparation for the Graduate Management Admission Test begins with an overview and introduction to the GMAT, which is a computer-adaptive test. A diagnostic test with answers precedes an extensive “Correct Your Weaknesses” section, which presents separate chapters on essay writing, reading comprehension, sentence correction, critical reasoning, and math. Two full-length practice tests with questions that reflect recent GMATs come with answers, analyses, and directions for evaluating the test taker’s score. The manual’s concluding section discusses business school basics, with advice on choosing a school, coping with the application procedure, financing a business school education, and entering the job market.

Why does my university use this book? 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Why does my university use this book? The University of Washington uses this book to weed out the pre med students. Why do they choose this book? Zumdahl purposely wrote this book to be confusing. Try reading pp. 668 through 670 in the fifth edition. He wrote this to be especially confusing by not being consistent with phase signs nor giving clear statements, such as "When the phase of the right orbital is reversed and combined with the left orbital." What orbitals is he talking about? The ones on a figure, that happen to be on a different page, which is not in view when reading this page? This book is horrible and is designed for the student to fail. Thank you Zumdahl and UW for trying to ruin chemistry for your students.

Waste of Money 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Not only did my chemistry class not use this book, but I cannot imagine how ANY class could use this. This book is so badly written, that it isn't even worth opening. It doesn't follow any particular order, and it frequently jumps back and forth between highly advanced topics and surprisingly dumb examples. Reading through even a single chapter of this book will lower the intelligence quotient of any sane individual. I suppose this book could serve a useful purpose, but only if that purpose was to teach the students to forget what they already knew about chemistry. I think I've made my point: do not buy this book under any circumstances.

Editorial Review:

The Study Guide reflects the unique problem-solving approach taken by the Chemical Principles text. The new edition of the Study Guide includes many new worked out examples.

Really impressive and very neccessary 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

GMAT has been getting more difficult over the years. If you have any doubt, take the GMAT Prep (just google it) and compare the level of difficulty with the Offical Guides. The difference is very substantial.

Unfortunately, most GMAT prep companies, includng MGMAT, have been behind he curve of the changes.

But you are in luck as this new MGMAT book succeeds where other books, includng the previous edition of MGMAT number properties book, have failed. This new edition provides a very comprehensive explanation of GMAT number properties (primes, odd and evens, postive and negative, consecutive intgers, exponents, roots etc) which the previous version was lacking. Most importantly, this book is far better at emulating the difficulty and types of questions of the current GMAT test.

Number properties is perhaps one of the most difficult components of GMAT Quant section. Although GMAT tests only high school math, do not mistake its quant section for an SAT. For example, how many prime factors (odd or even) does a perfect square of an integer have? Can you find the total number of factors (not just prime factors) of number 2000 in under 2 minutes? Even if you are good in math, you probably can't without the help of this book. And yes, GMAT does ask you such questions which you should answer in 2 minutes or less.
