Best book for GRE preparation 5 out of 5 stars.

I studied for 2 months for the GRE's and tried out lots of books. This one was the best. (I used the 15th edition which is bit more recent). The math review was the most comprehensive I found, and I needed a great deal of math review because I've been out of school 15 years and haven't taken a math course in 19 years. The vocabulary lists were terrific too. Unlike some other reviewers, I found the practice questions to be about the same, and in some cases a bit easier, than the actual test. But I scored higher than I'd expected to on both the math and verbal sections, largely due to this book. My one complaint was there there is no index listing where to find help with specific math concepts so I had to do a lot of flipping around to find particular sections. I'd say: leave yourself plenty of time to study, try several books out to get different tactics (such as Cracking the GRE, the GRE for Dummies, the Kaplan's GRE Prep) but use this book extensively and definitely, definitely, definitely work with the GRE Powerprep software offered by the ETS, the people who make up the real GRE. I'd recommend downloading it from the web site because, although you're supposed to receive it in the mail once you register for the GRE's, it may not arrive in time. Best of luck!

It is a good book which contains a lot of questions made by ETS. The number of questions is near 400. But there aren't any detailed answers in it. You should not buy the copy unless you are smart enough to solve all of these by yourself.

the math review in PR was, i thought, the best amongst the main players (barron's, kaplan) - though i am very good at math, so i didn't need a lot of explanations regarding some of the shortcuts, etc., they have in this book. verbal was pretty solid in terms of instruction as well. you want to supplement the vocab here w/ kaplan's word list and barron's top 300 words. vocab is key to the verbal part of the exam, but you don't need to go overboard and learn 3,500 words (in barron's) unless you have time to prep that much...it's overkill. 600-800 is about right, which is what you'll get if you combine all sources. the one major negative - PR's tests are really easy. well, moreso because they repeat a lot of questions from the book. not to say the real exam is much harder than PR's, but it would probably be a good idea to try a few different books for more realistic tests (kaplan and barron's are pretty good). again, it's not so much that the questions here are very easy, it's that a lot of them are repeats.

Lots of practice, but could use better explanations 3 out of 5 stars.

If you're looking for tons of practice, this is the book may be for you. The book is page after page of examples. The main downfall of this book is that the explanations are only a sentence long. At times this made it difficult to understand why an answer choice was wrong. I'd prefer better explanations than quantity.
Another problem was the extensive vocabulary list.It would have been easier to learn if Barron's clustered their words into groups like in their Hot Word's for the SAT I book.

Overall, I'd rather spend my money on the Kaplan Verbal Book for the better explanations

This book is great for developing speed in answering Analogies and Sentence Completions, but I found it somewhat lacks on Critical Reading questions!!! But overall I would suggest u buy the book, it costs every penny!!!!!!!!

This book is all right--unmarred by the egregious errors and typos that characterize most of the GRE Bio test preparation texts currently on the market. However, it's insufficient if you're trying to achieve really high scores. For that, I recommend the book put out by ETS (Amazon sells it). I found that to be the only practice test that strongly resembled the actual test.

As background, I took the GRE Biology Subject Exam in December 1999, and scored in the upper 97% (if that makes any difference.) I personally found the ETS practice tests the most useful study aid, in conjunction with textbooks Campbell's Biology and Molecular Biology of the Cell by Alberts, et al. This book was a distant fourth, but those whose Bio is quite rusty, or whose scoring goals are more modest, might be quite pleased with it. (The other review books I used--the Barron's book and the one by Ogden--were a waste of time and money.)

Good, but not perfect ..... 4 out of 5 stars.

I'm a "non-traditional" undergrad (trans.: "older than dirt"), a music major, who is in the process of getting ready for grad school. My math background is pretty limited: I haven't studied algebra or geometry since high school (about 40 yrs ago - 1965-66), and I had some minimal statistics and probability in a "math for non-science/math majors" course a couple of years ago. So it was with some trepidation that I started preparing for the GRE general test. Oh, I figured I'd do OK on the verbal -- living this long, you get reasonably familiar with vocabulary. But thinking about the quantitative portion threw me into a real panic.

I decided I needed help -- and ordered this book based on the description (and price). Note that this is the edition WITHOUT the companion CD. You do have access to the Princeton Review website and the online tools there, and you'll be wise to take advantage of them.

I used this book and the online tools in conjunction with the ETS PowerPrep software. Due to my school schedule, projects, finals, etc., I didn't start studying in earnest until about 4 days before the test. Probably not the smartest move on my part, but it was the best I could do. Before I started studying, I took a practice test just to see how I'd do -- ugh! not very good at all (550 verbal, 450 quantitative). So I spent about 2/3 of my time familiarizing myself with the tricks and tips for the math section offered by this book, and 1/3 of my time on the verbal and analytical writing sections.

The result: a very respectable 630 verbal score, and an astounding 730 quantitative score. The "tricks" offered by this book made all the difference in the math results.

It's not perfect -- you really do need to use the ETS preparation software, especially for the analytical writing part. Also, the ETS practice tests seem to be just a little closer in difficulty to the "real" test, but the PR tests aren't bad at all in that respect. I'm giving it 4 stars only because I rarely give 5-star ratings for things like this.

Some people have complained about the PR level of difficulty, their approach, etc. All I can say is that it definitely helped me nail the math section, and I consider it money well spent. Your mileage may vary.

Looks like a perfectly good book for upper level test prep, but it does not suitable for lower level prep

This is a great tool to help your child do well on the ISEE. Since this may not be the first time a child is taking a standardized exam, the formatting is familiar.

Spend alot of time studying word games!

The only issue is that the book should be divided into the ISEE portion and the SSAT. Sometimes it was hard to figure out the lessons for the ISEE.
