This book is EPIC!!!!!! 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I was studying my tusik off for the GRE, but every book I had read was stupid and pretty gay. The first time I took the GRE I got a C-, but then I read this book - and smoked a ton of weed - and then I took it again and I got a B-, which is an improvement of 39%. So, you should like, read it. ALSO, it's pretty funny.

Great Study Book 5 out of 5 stars.

This book was ideal for studying for the GRE psych exam. It provides a great review and gives vital information. I would reccomend it to anyone taking the test.

Needs a revision 3 out of 5 stars.

After taking the exam in December 2006, you would be better off buying and reviewing the latest version of Campbell Reece 'Biology' textbook to study for the GRE Biology Exam. This Kaplan book needs a revision as it is misrepresenting a lot of the information that was presented on the exam.

I would say that this book is good reference for a high school biology teacher.

One Of The Best GRE Subject Books For Biology Majors Who Want To Score High 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is one of the best GRE subject books for any person trying to score high on the GRE exam in Biology. It covers everything you need to know in detail. The illustrations, the diagrams, the graphs, the charts, are all very helpful too. They even show you some basic math to help you understand everything better and for it to make sense for you. It has three sections Cellular and Molecular Biology, Organismal Biology, and Ecology and Evolution. I could not put it down it was so helpful and I understood everything that they wrote down. This book is very specific and as mentioned above and thorougly explains everything without you saying this is too much. There are about 14-15 practice questions at the end of each section and the answers are explained fully. The end of the book there are 200 questions that cover everything that you read in the book and the answers are again fully explained at the end. I am not a good multiple choice test taker but after reading about 10 pages on a certain topic I answered the question correctly at the end. I highly recommend this book you will definately score higher on the GRE subject. Even if you are not a good test taker you will most likely get a higher score! The book might I add is interesting to read too and is very thought provoking.

it helped me 4 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

I bought this with Cracking the GRE to prepare for the test. I'd say it helped me (my boyfriend said "wow" when I told him my score). It has plenty of quizzes for good practice, and they do a great job of explaining the testing process to you. The strategies might take a while at first, but over time it gets easier to process faster. What I didn't like, though, was that beyond the quizzes, nearly everything is identical to the verbal and writing sections of Cracking the GRE. The vocab hit lists are exactly the same- I would have liked some new words.

The math on the GRE is pretty simple, so if you want test prep, I'd suggest getting this book only, and get free math prep from the ETS website.

Editorial Review:

Verbal Workout for the GRE gives you everything you need to tackle the verbal portion of the GRE test. It includes hundreds of practice exercises to sharpen your skills, as well as the Hit Parade for the GRE, a list of the 300 vocabulary words that most frequently appear on the exam.

The Princeton Review also teaches you proven strategies for scoring high on the verbal section of the GRE. Techniques include:

*solving analogies without knowing the meanings of all the words in the problem
*using contextual clues to answer sentence completion problems
*working backward from the answer choices to solve antonym problems
*strategically managing time on the reading comprehension section

Qualified praise 3 out of 5 stars.

This study guide was certainly helpful inasmuch as it allowed me to focus my studies for the GRE Lit. in English subject test--helped me, in other words, follow some line of preparation that was more pointed and purposeful than simply reading over the Norton anthologies.

But after taking the exam, I feel much less confident in the spot-on accuracy of this study guide than I did about the *Verbal Workout* guide by Princeton Review for the GRE General Exam. Of course there's just much more material to cover for this exam. But more importantly, *Cracking the GRE Literature Test* rests on several crucial assumptions, assumptions that I adopted myself in studying for the test, but which now appear to me a little questionable.

First, this book assumes that the large bulk of the exam involves identification--overt or covert, open or implied. Thus it emphasizes the study of basic titles, character names, and (to a lesser degree) plot contours of canonical Western works. While this was in some measure helpful, I found that the test focused much more on passage interpretation or analysis (grammar, style, definition), and that the passages themselves were drawn from sources other than those emphasized by the PR study guide. Look to the periphery and not to the center of the canon for these works, I guess I would tentatively advise. Not what one wants to hear after extensive reviews of *Canterbury Tales* and *Paradise Lost*, but such was my experience. The good news is that the interpretation questions rely on material that's technically provided in the exam; the bad news is that, on a 230-question test, one just doesn't have the time necessary to do justice to all such questions.

Second, the study guide assumes that a novice-level familiarity with literary theory suffices for the purposes of the Lit. in English subject test. If my recent experience is at all representative--and who knows if it is?--I would recommend that potential test-takers review, not only the study guide's encapsulation of various theoretical schools, but also the work of some *specific* theorists. I suppose that the (what else?) relatively new Norton anthology on criticism & theory would be a good resource here.

Third: some final thoughts on what this guide explicitly told me NOT to study, including Shakespeare and the Bible. I took an undergraduate Shakespeare course, so I was happy to follow the former instruction. And I don't regret doing so. But there were several more Bible-as-literature questions, posed in much greater detail, than I was expecting--and this in addition to the several Bible-allusion answer choices to questions on literary works. (Most of this stuff was, granted, in the passage-analysis zone, but still.) Not sure if this represents ETS's effort to rebuke the Princeton Review's disciples--but perhaps I'm just spinning a story where there's none to tell.

It was delivered on time, book is in excellent condition. I haven't had time to use every aspect of the book yet but I'm looking forward to taking the online practice tests and using the handy CD that comes with it. I've been reading the book, and I have already picked up a few things!

GRE PREMIER 2 out of 5 stars.

THIS WOULD HAVE BEEN A GOOD BOOK BUT I ONLY NEEDED THE WRITTEN PORTION OF THE GRE AND THIS INCLUDED EVERYTHIMG, WRITING BOOK MUCH BETTER

The book with the CD-ROM really helps simulate an actual CAT. 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I bought the Kaplan GRE Premier Program 2008 edition that comes with the CD-Rom. Note: the CD is only compatible with Windows version 1.0. Though I personally found the book to be less effective than Barron's GRE prep book [for one, I thought Barron's was better organised and had more content in it], the CD-Rom by Kaplan was very useful.

The CD-rom provides access to practice tests for the verbal and quantitative components of the GRE [three tests each]. In addition, we get three CATs with the full exam on each [i.e. the written, verbal and quantitative components]. Once one takes the CATs, a score is provided scaled from 200-800 [except for the essays]. It also provides a detailed answer list with explanations. On the whole, this is a good buy for those preparing to take the GRE.

Many repeated practice questions from the Premier edition. 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

If you already own the Kaplan Premier edition for the GRE, then don't waste your money buying this as many of the questions for the verbal component are repeated in here. Though I found the opposite drills useful, most of the other drills were only average and I personally preferred Barron's GRE coverage of the verbal component. By itself, this would be good if you don't already own the Premier GRE edition by Kaplan which covers all the components of the GRE general test.

Not Recommended 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I purchased this book because of Kaplan's brand. Unfortunately, I am very disappointed by the book and going to return it. This is the fifth edition and yet there are so many mistakes throughout the book. Worse, the content is just space-filler and useless. I find my time spent reading the book wasted time. Furthermore, this is supposed to be a workbook but the exercises included is just half of that included in Barron's general GRE prep. In brief, save yourself time and money by staying away from this book.

Incredibly Handy Guide to Have 5 out of 5 stars.

If you are preparing for the GRE - these workbooks are a must have. The first timer will find a great deal of use from the descriptions provided with regard to test layout, timing, and how questions posed are selected.
While even the most seasoned test taker can walk away from this guide with a great deal of practice. This book (as too the Math workbook) has been an invaluable tool during my studies. Kaplan has the perfect degree of experience and expertise to guide you to your aspired-to GRE score.

quite helpful, but not just by itself 4 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

The book takes a different approach on vocabulary building. Unlike the other test prepration of books I have seen, this book does not present you with list of words to memorize.

The best feature of this book is that it makes you work on each new word. I agree with the authors on the fact that this is an effective approach. However, the words listed in this book are not quite the standard of GRE/GMAT. This book would be helpful to those who might be writing the SATs or are just beginning their GMAT/GRE preparation with a very limited vocabulary.

I don't regret buying this book at all, since it isn't very expensive and also i can use the "strategy" of this book with more complex words.

Editorial Review:

Standardized tests require extensive verbal and vocabulary skills. Questions are often answered incorrectly simply because the test-taker does not know the meaning of key words used in the question. This book provides a comprehensive verbal and vocabulary builder for the SAT, ACT, GRE, GMAT, and LSAT. Includes over 1,700 words commonly seen on these tests together with methods and tools designed to teach the meaning of words in context. Also includes 16 carefully designed exercises and 16 practice sets. These exercises and practice sets clearly and concisely increase vocabulary skills without the use of rote memorization. Book uses "self reference" antonyms, synonyms, and context to impact word meanings in a user-friendly, easy to learn manner.

The Best $10 You'll Spend on GRE Prep 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Crash Course for the GRE is primarily about the test itself, not the skills the GRE ostensibly tests, so it's suitable for test takers of all levels. It doesn't try to teach you math, reading, or writing; instead, it arms you with strategies (and an irreverent attitude) for tackling the test itself. You'll learn how to find the correct answer to problems quickly, and how to make an educated guess when you can't find the answer. You'll also get advice about how to make the most of whatever time you do have to prepare for the test.

While a selection of practice problems is included, you'll almost certainly want more. If you can afford a copy of Princeton Review's Cracking the GRE with DVD, 2008 Edition, that's an excellent choice. But if $10 is all you have to spend, or if you don't have time for lots of practice, this book will make an excellent companion to the free test prep materials available from ETS itself.

Whether you're studying night and day to get a perfect score, or just looking for some quick advice to avoid embarrassment on test day, this is $10 well-spent.

Students preparing to take the Graduate Record Exam will appreciate this set of flash cards as a study aid to hone their test-taking proficiency. Vocabulary, definitions, and questions, as well as terms, formulas, and equations on each card come with answers and explanations on the reverse side. Cards cover topics that appear on the GRE, including antonyms, analogies, sentence-completion questions, discrete quantitative questions, quantitative comparison questions, data interpretation questions, questions based on knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, and geometry, and more. The cards measure 4 1/2" x 2 3/4" and have a corner hole to accommodate an enclosed metal key-ring-style card holder. The ring allows students to arrange the flash cards for the Q & A study sessions in any sequence that suits their needs. This flash card set makes a useful complement to Barron’s GRE—2008 test prep manual.

Only for begginers 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book and did not really help me. Actual questions were much tougher than book provided. The book did not contain any permutation-combination, arithmetic sequence, probability, slopes and XY plane questions. These questions appeared frequently on the test. Also examples in this book are very easy and these questions have nothing to do with actual questions. I recommend, those who aim to get high score do not purchase this book.

I am using the ARCO GRE/GMAT review and I find it very detailed and deep.
Very good purchase for the ones who need just a fresh review of what they studied in college/high school.
Not fit for who is completely dry of math.

Good for beginners 3 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

The only book of its kind available today, this popular handbook features comprehensive math review for the major graduate and business school exams. It helps sharpen the understanding of basic and complex math concepts to achieve high scores.
