A note for the previous reviewer 4 out of 5 stars.

If you look at the ETS website for the GRE, you will find that they have decided not to switch to the new test. They made that decision in conjunction with colleges and universities because they would not be able to make the new test available across the board just yet.

Problems with the SOftware 3 out of 5 stars.

Please be aware that the software for Kaplan does not work with Mac or windows vista, and they it doesnt say anywhere visible in the book until you've bought it. Otherwise the book is good

buyer beware! 1 out of 5 stars.

Bourght this as a gift for my girlfriend because she is a bit stressed about the new GRE. This book does NOT help with that apparently, as none of the practice tests or questions are for the new GRE. If you are looking for a study aid for the new GRE do not buy this book.

Does A Good Job, But Could Do Better 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This book was helpful, it was written well and in a positive style (which is good if you're freaking out about the GRE). When I bought this book I also ordered a couple of other GRE test prep books, and compared to some of the others (like the Barron's book for example) the Princeton Review book did not have as much practice sets and their word list was not as comprehensive either. This books was great in a lot of ways, but i just wish it had more.

Time-wasting if not skill-diminishing 1 out of 5 stars.
16 of 16 people found this review helpful.

I've read this book for LSAT prep. While the selection of passages is excellent, crafting of questions is simply a bad joke. To be precise, it is mostly the answer choices that makes this book time-wasting, if not skill-diminishing. The answer choices in this book are just not the kind of choices that appear in an actual test. Especially annoying is that many "right" answer choices can be right only after a very very long stretch of logic, which NEVER happens in a real test.

NOT WORTH 1 out of 5 stars.
15 of 18 people found this review helpful.

I have reviewed the first 3 chapters which contains explaination given by the author to tackle the reading comprehension questions. But to co-relate the theory(explaination given by author) to the practice questions is practically not possible.

MY CONFIDENCE HAS NOT INCREASED BY ANY CHANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!! READING THIS BOOK.

Excellent study tool 4 out of 5 stars.

This book helps the reader learn the correct way to annotate and outline the paragraphs on the reading comprehension section of the GRE*MCAT*LSAT*GMAT. It was very helpful.

Very Helpfull - buy it 4 out of 5 stars.

This is a very helpful book on Reading Section. One of the very few available ones on the market. I don't understand why there are so many books conserning LR and AR, and almost none conserning the reading. Reading was my most difficult section (as it is for many students- passages are long time is not enough, same problem..) and if there was more on the market about it I would have purchased it. Anyhow, this book is well written, explanatory, enough exercises.
The reason why I rate it with 4, not 5 stars is because it is not LSAT specific, but it also tells about MCAT, GMAT, etc. Which is important when it comes to the length of passages in the excercise section which takes up 130 out of 180 pages from the book. There are passages of different lengths from 30 to 80 lines, covering the formats of the passages given on GMAT, MCAT, etc. But what we need for LSAT - are passages of 55 - 60 lines so we can properly time ourselves and as we all know on the LSAT - TIME IS EVERYTHING.
In conclusion: helpful book - get it.
P.S. If the publishers get to see that - consider improving it.

Vocab List is Worth a Look and P. Test is Helpful 2 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Barring the Hugh Grant look-alike on the front, I first thought this book was nearly worthless. Then I looked at the vocab list and took the practice test -- they were both very helpful. It's too bad the rest of the book is sinfully shoddy, made on cheap newspaper, all black and white type -- if you didn't learn it in Freshman Biology with the color photos and CD-ROMS and 3D glasses and cattle-prod or whatever they use now, then cheap newspaper and crummy drawings won't help now.

If you're trying to save money, you could just go to a book-store and copy the vocab list at the back. See if you like the p. test, you might buy the whole book (esp at the price Amazon has now -- I paid almost 30$ for it from a regular bookstore). But do get that vocab list -- it's about 30 words that were all over the test, words nobody in their right mind would know unless they knew it would be on a test.

The practice test was helpful because UNLIKE ETS, the Princeton Review p. test gives explanations for all the answers and I did learn a couple of terms/ideas that were on the test from which I benefitted by going through answer explanations and correcting my test.

Editorial Review:

The GRE subject tests are among the most difficult standardized exams. Rather than testing general problem-solving skills, they require highly specialized knowledge.

The experts at The Princeton Review have thoroughly research each subject test to provide students with the most thorough, up-to-date information available. Students don’t need to relearn the entire histories of their fields—just what they need to know to earn high scores on the exams.

Each guide includes one full-length practice exam, complete with comprehensive explanations for every solution.

Some parts are great, LOTS of typos in math section 4 out of 5 stars.
9 of 9 people found this review helpful.

Written by a test writer, it certainly -feels- like you're getting insider tips. I haven't taken the GRE yet, so I can't say whether it's truly useful. The text is easy and fun to read, and the chapters are organized well. The content is straightforward to work through and the tips and strategies are highlighted well.

The thing I don't like, and it's a big thing, is the quantity of typos in the math section. There are mistakes in the formulas (yikes!) and in the answers and explanations. For example, page 200 lists the surface area of a cube as 486 for a side length of 8 AND for a cube with a side length of 9. Page 202 gives information about a triangle: lengths of two sides and one angle. The problem asks you to estimate the length of the third side. Yes, it's an estimation, but the answer is nothing near the two lengths the third side could be, when calculated. (There are two possibilities given the setup -- one where the sides are more equal, and one where the third side is very short, but the answer tells you to pick something in the middle. Drawing it out by hand and modeling it with mathematical software give the same results -- and neither are what the book says is the answer.) On page 219, there's a function with an equal sign in the numerator:

f(x)=1
--------
1-x^2

On page 220, the formula for finding the midpoint between two points is listed as

(x1 - x2)/2, (y1 - y2)/2

but the minus signs should really be plus signs. I consider that a serious error, since someone who doesn't know the formula will be misled.

This review is of a 2007 edition.

If they revise, much more attention needs to be paid to the math proofreading, and at a minimum they should fix the few problems mentioned above. (And will they send me an honorarium for catching these mistakes? :-) )

Definitely the MOST helpful of books 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I have 3 different SAT books, and have flipped through several in the bookstores. This is by far the best.

It has the best lay-out & breaks down everything in the simplest way. I haven't been in high school for 8years and this book totally refreshed (& probably even taught) me on 95% of what appeared on the SAT.

Get this book if you need to know HOW to do the problems. Get another book or look online if you want to know about the extremely debated "techniques" for improving your scores based on not what you know, but on how you alocate your time during the test.

Horrible Prctice Tests 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is a good book for preparation, but the practice tests are completely unlike the real ones. I took one one here, got a 1025. Compare that to a 1200 I took, with no extra preparation on a real test!

Too many errors 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 6 people found this review helpful.

My son and a friend are in the other room right now, taking the practice test. I'm dreading grading them because you can't trust that the answers in the book are right! Too bad it's too late for me to go out and get 2 different books. Just fyi, here are the mistakes we found (2002 edition)

1. Pg. 288, #11 (Answer should be A)
2. Pg. 125, top problem (She wrote + then multiplied.)
3. Pg. 188, the problem has many typos (Should be (1/(1/x))+1=11

Confusing 2 out of 5 stars.
8 of 10 people found this review helpful.

If you are struggling with the Logic Games section of the LSAT, as I am, you might want to stay away from this book. Perhaps it was designed for someone already scoring fairly well and was looking to add a few more points to their score, because it certainly does not cater to the individual trying to learn the basic techniques in solving logic games. I cannot imagine anyone diagramming in a timely manner using the methodology contained within. The structure of warm up exercises followed by mini-games eventually leading up to practice games should work but doesn't. I never grasped how the warm-ups tied into the overall scheme of the game. The explanations following each section were short, at times awkward, and narrow in scope. The sections and explanations just did not seem to build off of each other. Not a friendly environment for someone trying to learn. However, if you are looking for a source for all of the different types of logic games, this might be for you. It contains an incredible variety of game types. You just need to be fairly efficient with them before you get started on this book.

Editorial Review:

The first of its kind, this step-by-step guide utilizes targeted, intensive practice for the tricky Analytical Reasoning/Logic Games questions. It features in-depth practice with every type of analytical reasoning question, detailed explanations for all questions, and questions that build from easy to challenging.

Great strategy review 5 out of 5 stars.
11 of 18 people found this review helpful.

Great book for reviewing strategies for taking the GRE! Well organized & easy to read. Good examples and sample tests, as well as keys & references (to other sources).

It's gonna Ok with this book 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 23 people found this review helpful.

I didn't fininshed it, but I do have a thorough review of it.
The book is great for the GRE-takers, but you will find it astonished that the program has a sister-program: premiere program!!Know what, I got this fact after I pushed the paying buttom.
But somehow the comprehensive program is still effective for test takers.
Oh, I forget to tell you the latter part of the book--how to apply to college---is somewhat redundant. How could a person be ready to take the GRE when he doesn't know how to apply and select the uni??

Good but a little scary 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I recommend this book with one reservation: it makes highly inaccurate predictions of what your eventual score will be based on your performance on the practice test. I don't know if this is meant to scare you straight or what, but I did 100+ better on the actual GRE than I did on both sections in the book test. Don't let it freak you out! It was the last practice test I took before the real GRE (today) and I definitely went in with a sense of foreboding because I bombed the practice test so hard.

The strategies themselves in the book are good, but for an idea of what an actual GRE will be like, just use the Powerprep software that ETS sends you when you register. It is a much more accurate experience and the scores at the end line up much better with your eventual GRE scores.

I also agree with another reviewer that it seems this book has a whole chapter or so of filler material about how to apply to grad school. Thanks, Kaplan.
