LSAT Preptests 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Ten practice tests provided variety for scheduling intellectual infrastructure sessions for students preparing for the LSAT. Format of the texts and availability of answer keys made for ease of switching from section to section as students honed academic skills.

Official Preptests...the way to go 5 out of 5 stars.

Without taking these official tests, my score would have been much lower. Practice, practice, practice. By the time I'd reached the last few tests in this book, my score on each test in the book was the exact same as what I ended up with for my actual LSAT score.

Useful; note the difference in cover color 5 out of 5 stars.

I've always used past practice exams as my primary study aids, from the SAT to AP to GRE. So I find these 10 exams (from Oct. 1999 to Oct. 2002) pretty useful. I plan to do the 2002+ exams after I'm done with these. The main reason I'm writing this, though, is to point out that my version (which I bought at the end of 2006) has a purple/red cover rather than the white/blue cover shown in the product image. After comparing the contents of the two, I'm pretty sure they're the same thing-- just in case anyone was wondering.

Cla Study Guide and Mock Examination (Paralegal Series)
The tests and questions in this book are a good study and practice guide. However, my exam book came with the wrong answer pages in the back so checking my answers has become extremely difficult.

Studying Paralegal 5 out of 5 stars.

The best logical reasoning book 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 7 people found this review helpful.

I was really impressed with this book. Really thorough, but surprisingly efficient. Unlike the power score bible, this doesn't make everything unnecessarily complicated. I know the LSAT is hard, but I like how it showed me how answering every problem is just a matter of using the same small set of skills in slightly different ways. This also has a lot more example problems, timed quizzes, and drills.

Exactly What It Should Be 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I'm a private LSAT tutor who uses a mix of past LSATs, commercial books, and my own material for my students. I have to say I really like this book and the others from Examkrackers.

I respect the opinion of the previous reviewer (AW), who has written a lot of quality reviews for many LSAT books, but I disagree that with the opinion that this book is overly simplistic. For example, the book advises you to ask yourself for flaw questions, "Is this a flaw in the argument?" While this sounds obvious, this advice is followed by a discussion of why answer choices for flaw questions can be wrong, and it turns out that there are only two kinds of wrong answer choices for flaw questions: choices that don't describe real flaws, and choices that don't accurately describe the argument. Thus, this simple question reminds you to check whether each choice really describes a flaw and really describes the argument. Only the correct choice will do both. So, yes, this approach is simple, but it gets you to the right answer, so why make things more complicated? I like the simplicity. Of course, the book also provides a lot more advice about how to spot common flaws as well.

The point about conditional reasoning is analogous. The LRB has tons of material regarding this topic, and while it is all true, about half of it is beyond the scope of any question that would appear on the LSAT more than once a decade. I started advising my students to skip large portions of this book when they came to me utterly confused. If you can handle All, Most, and Some, including combining these concepts, you're golden for the LSAT. The EK book has a great approach for doing so, and you can forget all about powerscore's double not arrows, negative logic ladder, and the dreaded "complete table of formal logical additive inference relationships."

Bottom line: I now use the EK series with my students, along with the home study regimen available on their site and a bunch of past LSATs. My students like it a lot.

Only if you've really got nothing else to do... 2 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is meant to be a "hardest of" LSAT questions and on this level, the book is what it's advertised to be. However, the questions are hard for all the wrong reasons. (Note that the book contains only made up LSAT questions, not actual questions from administered LSATs).

On the LSAT, there is exactly one right answer and exactly four wrong ones. On a weaken question, exactly one answer will weaken the answer at all and exactly four answers will not weaken whatsoever.

This book attempts to make questions difficult by putting in multiple answers that could debatably be right. Then in the answer, they will equivocate with statements like 'this will weaken only in situations that...". No. On the LSAT, wrong answers on a weaken question never weaken ever. Period. Just because something doesn't weaken in 100% of cases doesn't matter. If it even weakens somewhat, it weakens. This book doesn't seem to understand this.

So, yes, by putting in multiple possibly correct answers, this book does contain some very difficult questions. Because now you are debating between two answers, each of which weaken and you're trying to decide which one does it more of the time than the other.

This is great for mental exercise, but isn't something that shows up on a real LSAT.

The logic games are also convoluted and totally non-representative. Again, great for a mental challenge. Not really useful for LSAT prep. If you want some more totally unrepresentative, but hard games, check out the purple REA LSAT games book.

One thing I did like about the book is the way they broke out questions by the "trick" type rather than just the question type. For example, there is a section on scope shifts in the conclusion, scope shifts within premises, which I thought was a good way of emphasizing what an LSAT taker should be looking out for. Too bad the questions they put after those short tutorial bits were so poorly constructed.

Editorial Review:

With about 400 practice questions accompanied by full answer explanations, LSAT Workout focuses on the basic patterns of test question constructions and provides advanced discussions of test ideas. LSAT Workout also contains timed exercises styled like real LSAT sections.

A great review manual and reference book 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 31 people found this review helpful.

This book was my primary source when I was preparing for the CLA exam. Coherent, organized and thoughtful, it is a "must buy" for CLA candidates. Until my book was borrowed (and not returned) by another legal assistant, the manual served as a handy reference manual in my practice.

CLA Review Manual: A Practical Guide to CLA Exam Preparation 4 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Good and comprehensive. I have no problem with the substantive value, however, the finish of the pages was raged and not trimmed properly. One part was extended way beyond the cover. Is this because Amazon gives a discount? Not something I appreciate in a book I will keep in my library for life. The prior issue was a better-quality product.

Editorial Review:

This manual is a comprehensive study tool for the Certified Legal Assistant (CLA) Examination administered by the National Association of Legal Assistants, Inc. The manual thoroughly covers each section of the exam with extensive outlines, examples, facts, and charts for review. Sample tests are included at the end of each chapter. Tips for studying and successful completion of the exam are also provided. The new edition has been completely updated to reflect the latest changes in the law and the CLA Examination.

Games don't recreate the full feel of real LSAT problems 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

There are approximately 44 original games in the book.

Like a lot of 3rd party books on LSAT logic games, this book doesn't use real LSAT games and instead the authors have written their own. I don't have a problem with this, but I find these made-up games often don't do a good job at recreating the true feel of an LSAT game.

I found the categorization of the games a bit odd, but I bought the book more for the extra problems so how they categorized the game isn't really that important.

The book is ok if you've exhausted the supply of official LSAT problems and are looking for more games to do. It's not great as a teaching tool, but sufficient as a source of extra practice.

I found the games to be neither overly easy nor overly difficult. They're just about right. Hard enough to stretch you and teach you how to work through the problems faster, which is what a lot of people have trouble with, timing.

Good, but too general 3 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I bought this book looking for a detailed method for solving the riddle that are LSAT logic games. Instead, I found a book that can tell me how to identify the types of games, but leaves me without straightforward methods for solving the problems. A better strategy would be to simply do as many of the offical LSAT problems as you can before you take the test.
However, it is helpful to have quite a few examples of "solved" problems with explanation. With the official test book, you know that you got the answer wrong, but don't know why.
So, if you have the money to spend recklessly, this book will get you further toward your goal of understanding how logic games work, but it may not help you do much better on them without practice, practice, practice.

A great investment in LSAT prep 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I struggled with the games a lot before I got this book, but this was super helpful. This broke things down in a really intuitive way and gave me an approach that is easy to apply to every game. I looked at some other books, including the PS bible, but the symbols in this book work a lot better. One nice thing they do is give you tons of drills that just teach one little part of a technique before making you try it out on a real game. This helped me a lot. And they give you tons of games to practice on too. I'd say buy this book, the other two Examkrackers books, and the "Next 10", and you're completely set.

An Improvement Over Other Books 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm a private LSAT tutor who uses a mix of past LSATs, commercial books, and my own material for my students. I previously reviewed the Examkrackers LR book, and I find this AR book equally useful.

Since this book provides the first real competition to the powerscore LGB, it is natural to compare the two. The first obvious difference is the philosophy of where to put things on the page. PS advocates a main setup at the bottom of the page, with work for individual question done next to the question. I've always found this problematic for two reasons: students forget to follow important rules when they are written far away from the problem at hand, and work scattered around the page makes it difficult to use work on previous questions to help answer later ones (which is a huge time-saving strategy for some questions). The EK approach shows you have to put everything in one place, which I like better; I've found my students do as well.

I think the EK book has better symbols too. One disastrous set of PS symbols is the "<" and ">" signs and the branching order symbols, which always throw my students off; EK comes up with a more sensible solution to this problem, and a clever set of symbols that are intuitive and work with just about every game.

There is plenty of emphasis in this approach on finding overall deductions before jumping into the questions. People who are already familiar with the LSAT know that this is where the real points come from, and the book doesn't skimp here. Of course, there are some weaknesses. I think the chapter on rare game types is written in a particularly confusing way, but luckily the "rare" games are very rare indeed, so this is unlikely to hurt your score. Overall, I like this series enough that I now use the EK complete study pack and the home study regimen on their website as the basis of my tutoring program with students.

DO NOT PURCHASE! 1 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

As other reviewers have mentioned, this book is atrociously bad. It is filled with misprints and typos, and some of the answers to their sample questions are downright wrong. Also, the questions used do not seem very similar to the actual logic games used in recent LSATs. Furthermore, while the book promises that with the purchase you can get 3 months of additional help on their website, it is impossible to log on. I don't know if Curvebreakers even still exists! All the email addresses on their website bounce back to sender, and on their voicemail they say they don't answer the phone or check messages, but to contact them via email instead. Of course on another invalid address.

MUST READING FOR LAW SCHOOL APPLICANTS!!! 5 out of 5 stars.
30 of 31 people found this review helpful.

As a college professor who has advised law school applicants for over 25 years, I found that this book is simply the best one I have ever read on applying to law school! I was so impressed by this book that I now require my students to read it before talking to me in detail. This book is so concisely written that it can be read comfortably cover-to-cover, unlike some of the other advising guides, that are so unwieldy that students do not want to wade through them. The comfortable and clear writing style of the book makes you feel like you are sitting down with Ms. Wright for a personal advising session. These students have consistently come back to tell me that this book was THE SINGLE MOST USEFUL thing they read to help them with the law school application process.

Those who critique this book as not having "insider secrets" have clearly not read it thoroughly. I was impressed by the large number of "insider secrets" to the process, that were previously unknown to me and my pre-law advising colleagues. Because of this book I have completely changed the way that I advise my students, and have noticed that their success rate for law school admissions has been rising dramatically. The key in this highly competitive applications environment is to know how to pick the schools you are applying to, and target your applications for those specific schools. The tips in this book tell you how to do that. This book also really goes through the two-stage process of law school admissions today--wherein you can get a variety of "envelopes", or notifications on the status of your applications. Schools do not just admit or deny you these days. There is a whole range of responses, and the wise applicant needs to know how to maximize their chances of turning any of them into an admission letter. This book helps you do just that.

If you want to get into the law school of your choice I urge you to read this book, then read it again carefully, and follow all of its advice! I am confident that your "big envelopes" will be sure to follow!

Editorial Review:

Everyone who applies to law school dreams of the day they will open their mailbox to find a big envelop containing their letter of acceptance. During her more than fifteen years as a pre-law advisor, attorney Carol L. Wright has helped thousands of applicants realize that dream. Now, she has published this comprehensive and engagingly-written guide with the answers to all of your law school admission questions. She leads you step-by-step through the process of identifying and getting into the law school that is right for you. She shares secrets that most applicants, and even many adivsors, do not know.
