Great idea but poor definitions 3 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

As others have written in, while the cards cover most of the frequently used GRE vocab words and are an extremely helpful way to study, be wary of the some of the definitions. Kaplan doesn't always provide the best definitions or example sentences. They often define the word as a verb and then use it as an adjective in a sentence, for example. In addition, they often don't provide all of the possible definitions, and it's the secondary definitions that get you on the GRE. The card design is extremely helpful, but I had to relearn many words from other vocab sources.

Good words, but TERRIBLE definitions 1 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

Embarrassing quality from Kaplan. The words they have chosen may be appropriate and certainly seem like "GRE Words", however, the word choice, sentence examples, and even the definitions are terrible. Did they even have an English instructor take a look at them?

The example sentences often use an obscure or not-intuitive usage of the vocab word. For example, "inimical":

"Even though a cease-fire had been in place for months, the two sides were still inimical to each other."

The point being: You would NEVER see this sentence in a newspaper or book...why didn't they use a more common usage of the word as an example? Like "...inimical to good health...".

More examples abound. This terrible work and an embarrassment from Kaplan.

Editorial Review:

-500 flashcards covering the most-tested GRE vocabulary words

-Sample sentences provide the words in context

-Also includes synonyms and a pronunciation key

Sooo many errors 2 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have to say that I am disappointed in this book. I've found NUMEROUS typos and errors...this is supposed to be a review guide. Simple things like getting PEMDAS correct (it is referenced as PEDMAS on page 224). On page 263 there is an error in the associative law example...that 3Y should be 3X...people have enough problems with math itself than to have to read a study guide that throws erroneous problems at them. It's a waste of time and honestly I have no faith in continuing to review from it. Now I see even more errors found by other owners and it's truly disappointing.

Not as comprehensive as I expected it to be. 3 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

If you're looking for a book to prep you for the quantitative section of the GRE, this workbook by Kaplan is not a comprehensive prep book. I personally found Barron's to be the best guide in helping me with the Math section of the GRE. I bought this book thinking it would a good practice book, but I found it to be average and the practice questions are much easier than the questions I found on the actual GRE.

Underrated 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

I strongly feel that some of the reviews of this book posted here are too harsh. Judging from a few of the comments, it seems that some might expect this to prepare them for the GRE Math Subject Test - which is very different from this book's intention, which is to prepare one for the math section of the General Test. The level of difficulty of the problems is not too hard - if you're looking to score a 800, this may not be the book for you - but it's perfect for those of us struggling to get over the 650 mark. The practice problems, for the most part, realistically resemble what one might encounter on the acutal test, and there are only a few GRE-tested math subjects that don't appear in this book. In just over a week of studying primarily with this book, I went from practice tests in the mid-600's range to a 720 on the actual test, so it definitely seemed to be a good investment.

Best title in the series! 5 out of 5 stars.

I think this is the best BRS there is. I used this book for course exam prep as well as board review. It is a great tool to highlight important concepts, and it explains things in a simple and effective way with the right amount of information.

Vital 5 out of 5 stars.

Editorial Review:

Most college-bound test-takers already know that 2400 represents a perfect score on the new-format SAT. This book focuses on meeting the needs of top students, the young men and women who believe they can approach that perfect score when it’s time for them to take the SAT. The authors skip past obvious test-taking strategies, coaching students on the do’s and don’ts of smart test-taking, using focused and effective techniques. Their goal is to help top students score 700 or above on all three sections of the new SAT—Critical Reading, Writing, and Math. A score of 2100 or higher will set test takers apart from the crowd, placing them in the top 5% of high-achieving students throughout the country, and virtually guaranteeing them acceptance to the most prestigious and academically challenging colleges. The authors present strategies for tackling the hardest questions on the SAT. Critical Reading strategies are given for both long and short passages. Coaching for the Writing Section covers essential grammar for the three question types and guides students on how to write an exemplary essay in 25 minutes. The Math Section reviews topics in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, statistics, and word problems. The book features many practice questions in all test areas with thorough answer explanations. Valuable appendices include upper-level vocabulary lists and useful math formulas. High-achievers will value this book as that extra leg-up to help them get those scholarships and gain admission to the college of their choice.

Book doesn't keep up with changes to GRE! 1 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Isn't it about time a multimillion dollar operation such as ETS (which, by the way, is tax exempt due to another brilliant loophole in the system) put at least a minimal effort into producing materials that truly benefit its customers? In addition to this grossly outdated book, which contains seven previously released tests dating from 1986 to 1992 (my God, Ronald Reagan was still in office then!), ETS is also responsible, or perhaps irresponsible, for PowerPrep, a software product not compatible with Macs and unable to run on Vista. Good job ETS -- seems you're really interested in helping students prepare for the GRE!

One of the math problems in this book uses a scenario in which Maria buys gasoline for $1.49 a gallon. Either Maria lives in Bahrain, or ETS is egregiously out of touch with modern American society. Worse yet, this book does not include any of the new question types recently added to both the math and verbal sections of the GRE.

Perhaps if ETS charged the equivalent of 1986 dollars for this antique it would possibly be worth it, but given that they offer old stuff for new prices, I recommend taking your 2008 dollars (what's left of them) and picking up a copy of a Princeton Review product. At least that will give you the low down on the current test, something more than ETS seems willing to do.

We hated you for bringing us the SAT, and now we loathe you for providing the GRE and expecting us to fork over good money for nothing! The sooner ETS and all standardized testing is abolished, the better!!!

Editorial Review:

These practice workbooks and guides contain essential information for those preparing for GRE subject tests, including practice questions, full-length practice tests that were actually administered at international GRE subject test administrations, answer sheets, correct answers, score conversion tables, and performance data for students who took the tests.
