A must have 5 out of 5 stars.

I read the negative reviews for this book before I purchased it. Nevertheless, I still ordered it. While the book is kinda like a phonebook type of product, the information in it is priceless. It covers so many topics. I strongly recommend it.

Folksy, easy reading 4 out of 5 stars.

Covers a lot of subjects, easy to follow. Pays attention to safety (like canning issues). Many subjects addressed.

Editorial Review:

From renowned pop-up masters Robert Sabuda and Matthew Reinhart comes an awe-inspiring tribute to the world's most beloved extinct animals and their 180-million-year reign on our planet.

Open this book and a massive T. REX springs out, flashing a startling jawful of jagged teeth. Turn the next spread and a ravishing raptor unfurls and appears to fly off the edge of the page. Inside the amazing ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS are "shield bearers" in full-body armor, creatures with frilly headgear, and weighty, long-necked giants. There are even amusing tidbits on the history of paleontology itself — like a pop-up version of a Victorian New Year's dinner in the belly of a dinosaur model, or a pair of scientists locked in a literal tug-of-war over bones.

Full of fascinating facts and lighthearted good humor, this breathtaking book includes fascinating, up-to-the-minute information about popular dinosaurs as well as many lesser-known varieties. With each of six spreads featuring one spectacular, large pop-up as well as booklets of smaller pop-ups and text, ENCYCLOPEDIA PREHISTORICA: DINOSAURS is a magnificent display of paper engineering and creativity — an astonishing book that will be read, admired, and treasured forever.

Great Children Books 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 9 people found this review helpful.

I read these when I was a kid and got them for my 9 year old niece. She loved them.

Can't go wrong with Encyclopedia Brown .... 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I remember enjoying these books as a boy and love sharing them with my son. Besides being enjoyable stories with admirable characters they are great for teaching reading. Solving the puzzles requires reading with attention to the details, logic and imagination. Sometimes young readers would rather skip difficult to read details but with these books they know they need to get each word.

Great book for boys 5 out of 5 stars.

This is a wonderful book for boys who like adventure. My son is dyslexic and doesn't like to read but is required to read 3 over the summer. It's hard to get him interested in any book, but he liked these, and they are a fairly easy read but still sophisticated enough to keep a 10 year old interested.

Editorial Review:

Encyclopedia Brown has found a home at Puffin, and we’re celebrating his arrival with a boxed set! Just in time for the holidays, this set contains the first four books in the classic Encyclopedia Brown series. Whether Encyclopedia Brown is solving cases for his neighborhood friends or his chief-of-police dad, he always has an intriguing mystery to crack.

Great for older kids, too! 5 out of 5 stars.

I bought this book for my 9 year old daughter who loves science. She enjoys it because it is easy to read, but still very informative. She will use some of the information for her science project at school this year. She saw the book at a friend's house, and I personally thought it was a little advanced for the 4 year old boy who owned it.

Fabulous book! 5 out of 5 stars.

I got this book for my 6 year old son. I have a few books about the body and I have found that most are not descriptive enough when going through the body systems. They were fine when my son was younger, but now he asks many more questions and I find myself having a harder time explaining how the body works. So, I got this book along with a real working stethascope for children. Every night he loves reading through a few pages at time of this book. He really enjoys telling others what he has learned the night before... Sometimes the infomation is a little too descript, and other times not enough. But, overall, it is an excellent book to help your child understand the wonders of the human body. I would highly recommend this for children 5 years old and up.

Editorial Review:

Showing what's inside the human body and how things fit and work together, the Human Body Encyclopedia is packed with fascinating facts and spectacular close-up photographs that make the subject accessible and fun. Covering every part of the body‹from major body systems to individual cells‹in language accessible to young children, this book is an inspiring new edition to the First Reference series and a valuable teaching aid for parents and teachers.

Good Reference 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Our 5 year old son likes Bionicle and has built a few of them (with a little help) but doesn't know a lot about the history or characters. The Bionicle world seems so complex. However, this Bionicle Encyclopedia is very informative and helps the reader understand the Bionicle world a lot better. Whenever our son is interested about a particular Bionicle character, place, thing or term we just look it up in the encyclopedia. The fact that it's alphabetized makes it very easy to look things up. We also like the fact that it shows correct pronunciations (especially since we're not sure how to pronounce some of the names). We like the pictures but we wish they had a picture of every character in the Bionicle world...other than that we think it's a great Bionicle encyclopedia!
.

Editorial Review:

An encyclopedic look at the entire Bionicle story line, featuring new and updated entries. Want to know more about the Piraka? They're all here. And what about Nidhiki or Makuta? The Toa? The Toa Inika? The city of Metru Nui? And the watery world of Mahri Nui? It's all here: everything you ever wanted to know - and some things you may never have asked. The answers to your questions are inside this book.

A must-have for fans of all ages whether they are new to the property or think they know it all.

Pefect gift for animal lovers 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

A friend's 2 1/2 year old son loves animals. Since he prefers real animals to cartoon ones, I decided to go with this book. I gave it to him almost a month ago and his parents say it's still his favorite thing in the world. He takes it everywhere an asks everyone he knows to tell him about the animals. I wouldn't hesitate getting this for a child of any age.

Educating 5 out of 5 stars.

Great Book 5 out of 5 stars.

It is a very nice book for younger kids. It has lots of information and also lovely pictures of animals.

Great starter encyclopedia for young readers. 4 out of 5 stars.

I bought this for my oldest a year or two ago for Christmas and it was and still is a huge hit.
In fact this is one of those books he insists on taking with him on longer drives or trips.
He loves animals, dinos, etc. So this book was perfect for him, gave him pictures, basic information and other little bits and pieces about each animal. He loves to look up animals he sees and finds outside and learn more about them.
If your child loves to learn more than just a name and recognize a picture I think this will be a great first start.

Editorial Review:

An inspiring new addition to the First Reference series, the DK First Animal Encyclopedia is loaded with spectacular photographs showing animal habits and habitats. From aardvark to zebra, this book is packed with fascinating facts about animals, giving children a wonderful head start on learning about the animal world.

Editorial Review:

Designed as a transition dictionary for readers in late-elementary school, Webster's New World Children's Dictionary bridges the gap between simple, picture-based dictionaries and the dull-but-necessary ones we all reach for when faced with unknown words. The medium-sized text, example sentences that accompany most definitions, and the miniature pronunciation guide on every page all work nicely together to ensure that kids will understand correct usage without getting overwhelmed with detail. Also included are maps, history and geography pages, and an introductory thesaurus. Especially helpful for younger users is the 10-page guide to dictionary usage, which covers synonyms, homonyms, and the ever-important ways to look up a word when you don't know how to spell it in the first place.

In general, the definitions are easily understandable for children ages 7 to 12, providing accurate answers without being verbose. In Webster's New World College Dictionary, "rebel" is described as "one who engages in armed resistance against the established government of one's country." In this version, you'll find the more kid-friendly definition "a person who fights against any kind of control or authority." --Jill Lightner

Give this book to a winsome young boy and you might inspire a scientist. I loved this book as a boy and recently bought a copy for my nephew. I read it quickly before wrapping it. Wonderful stories even if they are a little dated. Enjoy!

Beautiful pop-ups, text wasn't my favorite 4 out of 5 stars.
10 of 10 people found this review helpful.

Watch Video Here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R3MJS3EVVU91O This book lives up to the standard that Matthew Reinhart and Robert Sabuda have set with first rate pop-up engineering. Every page has a central pop-up that is beautiful and interesting. Each page is further embellished with a minimum of two corner pull-outs that are also pop-ups in themselves with history as to the folklore of fairies. From this perspective, it is top notch.

The area where I was a little disappointed was in the history of the fairies themselves. It starts out interesting enough explaining that fairies appear in the legends of every continent. But it tends to focus on the darker aspects of the folklore. I've never researched the history of fairies, but I prefer to think of them as benevolent beings. Most of the stories focused on their pranks and the misfortune they can bring. The final corner pullout talked about the English girls who supposedly played with fairies and set up a camera to catch them on film. It was a well publicized case because it was later exposed as a hoax. They had used cuts out from an old children's catalog. The girls admitted their prank but claimed that one photograph was authentic.

I loved the artwork and pop-ups, but the actual text made me feel creepy sometimes, and in the end, sort of sad. While I will show it to my children, I will use my own words to describe the fairy world. If you're really into pop-up books, this is worth adding to your collection, but if your true interest is the lighter side of fairies, I prefer the pop-up book How to Find Flower Fairies by Cicely Mary Barker.

Editorial Review:

Introducing a dazzling new series premiere! The world’s pop-up masters invite you to peek inside the fairy realm as it transforms before your eyes.

Open this entrancing book and meet Shakespeare’s Queen Titania, springing up with her silver wings aflutter. Further on, a crystalline elfin castle rises into the clouds, not far from some scary hobgoblins and trolls. And on a truly stunning spread, a humanoid magical tree spreads its branches to reveal a face within its foliage, while flowers unfold and rearrange their petals, turning into flower fairies. Visiting mythical beings around the world, from household brownies to the merfolk lurking deep below the sea, this breathtaking 3-D book, brimming with facts and fancy, will hold humans of all ages in its spell.

a muddled effort at fun, accessible instruction 2 out of 5 stars.
10 of 16 people found this review helpful.

Though the sincerity and hard work of the author are evident throughout "English Grammar Workbook for Dummies," the glibness and zaniness of the book's explanations and exercises undermine its effectiveness. Like many other texts in the "...for Dummies" series, this book uses a playful voice and an excess of random, silly jokes in an attempt to make the subject matter more accessible and engaging. The result is a mostly unfunny, overlong workbook that obscures its own points with needlessly dumbed-down terminology and random attempts at humor. The hands-on learning parts of the text--the exercises--are especially problematic. Sacrificing directness and clarity for funniness and off-beat charm, the exercises are full of "problem" sentences that are so strangely constructed, it's difficult for one to know how to correct them with any precision or confidence (and the answer keys are not very reassuring). This book will be of little use to advanced English speakers/writers, and it's hard to imagine that it could give most beginners anything more than a hazy understanding of English language mechanics and grammar rules, the correct terminology for which they'll have learn later, elsewhere.
