95 percent of humanity has the same delusion! 1 out of 5 stars.
4 of 19 people found this review helpful.

Richard Dawkins is a modern day "Ebenezer Scrooge" who can't even admit that people sometimes operate from altruistic motives. Why? Because it would actually show that over 3,700 years of moral discourse (much of it, certainly not all, as a result of beliefs about God) have had some effect. Perhaps this is why even the great philosopher Emmanuel Kant was unwilling to dismiss the idea of God from the scheme of things. Maybe Dawkins should go back and read Kant and see why many educated people believe that humanity's "moral impulse" gives credence to a belief in God. Pointing out the past and current shortcomings of organized religion is certainly valid, but as 95 percent of humnity believes in God in some form, to simply label this belief as a delusion is ludicrous.

Editorial Review:

In his sensational international bestseller, the preeminent scientist and outspoken atheist Richard Dawkins delivers a hard-hitting, impassioned, but humorous rebuttal of religious belief. With rigor and wit, Dawkins eviscerates the arguments for religion and demonstrates the supreme improbability of the existence of a supreme being. He makes a compelling case that faith is not just irrational, but potentially deadly. In a preface written for the paperback edition, Dawkins responds to some of the controversies the book has incited. This brilliantly argued, provocative book challenges all of us to test our beliefs, no matter what beliefs we hold.

A new approach for preachers' commentaries (RCL) 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 5 people found this review helpful.

This is the first volume to be published of a new commentary series for preachers, organized around the readings of the Revised Common Lectionary.

When completed, the twelve volumes of the series will cover all the Sundays in the three-year lectionary cycle, along with moveable feasts & high holy days.

For each lectionary text, Hebrew Bible, Psalm, Gospel, and Epistle, preachers will find four brief essays on the exegetical, theological, pastoral, and homiletical challenges of the text.

Each lectionary year (B 2008-2009, C 2009-2010, A 2010-2011) will be treated in four volumes, one for the Advent and Christmas seasons, one for Lent and Easter, and one for each half of Ordinary Time (the season after Epiphany & the 'long green season' after Pentecost).

While the twelve volumes of the series will follow the pattern of the Revised Common Lectionary, each volume will contain an index of biblical passages so that non-lectionary preachers may make use of its contents.

Editors of the series are Barbara Brown Taylor, Butman Professor of Religion at Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia, and David L. Bartlett, Professor of New Testament at Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia.

Full of information 5 out of 5 stars.

When I have something to look up, the answer is almost always in this dictionary. It defines words, topics, customs, some history, geographical and cultural information.

I love this Bible Dictionary! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

I have found this to be a wonderful Bible Dictionary! My mother in law bought me a different Bible Dictionary for Christmas and I found it to be very difficult to understand. I found this one on Amazon and she took the other one back and bought this one for me. It is a great investment! Much easier to understand than the other one! I am very pleased with this book ;0)

Very Good Study Aid 5 out of 5 stars.

Very pleased with this purchase. Very good price for 1700+ page book.
Excellent full color pictures and maps. Includes words from many versions including KJV, NKJV, NASB, and others. Each explanation includes the author of that explanation, his/her affiliation and occupation. Moderate and very conservative views of scripture alike will be pleased with this work. When there can be several interpretations it gives the different views and then the most likely view according to the text(s), but not dogmatic about it. The dictionary also includes non-bible words that fit into the biblical realm. Some examples, textual criticism, rapture, eschatology, etc. Very good dictionary.

Editorial Review:

The Holman Illustrated Bible Dictionary is designed both for those who need information quickly and those who want in-depth treatments of hundreds of topics. Each entry begins with a brief definition of the word followed by more detailed information. Includes 700 full-color graphics and so much more!

Editorial Review:

A sinister and curious Architectural Colossus is exploding across every continent on earth. The United States of America is at the heart of this incredible surge. Monuments, statues, and buildings are being created everywhere with evil intent and magical purpose. Designed by visionary illuminist architects and based on knowledge of the occult wisdom, Masonic geometry and sacred numerology, this Architectural Colossus can be traced back to the antiquities of Mystery Babylon. Its secrets, once unlocked, point to an amazing and frightening future destiny for you, me, and the entire world. The builders of this strange architecture comprise an elite cryptocracy--a veritable who's who of the world's rich and famous. Are the mysterious monuments these men are building part of a Grand Design? Is there, in fact, a Master Plan to seduce men's minds and catapult humanity into a New Order of the Ages?

Quite good 3 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This wasn't quite what I thought it would be. I had assumed that it would be a dictionary of every possible mental image and dream I had, and it is sorely lacking in that, but what it does give is a lot of well-researched things that are part of church life and Biblical life. Interesting book.

Editorial Review:

The Prophet's Dictionary by Paula Price is an essential tool for laymen, prophets, prophesiers, pastors, intercessors, and dreamers of dreams. As an all-in-one dictionary and reference book containing over 1,600 relevant definitions of terms and phrases for the prophetic realm of Christian ministry, it exposes ancient religious seductions and how they have infiltrated movies, television, and books. People from all walks of life can benefit as this book aids in the understanding of what may be expected from prophets or the prophetic ministry. Delve deeper and you will find much more.

Editorial Review:

All the People in the Bible really delivers on its title: you'll find literally all of the Bible's characters in this comprehensive and fascinating reference work. From the first entry on Aaron to the final entry covering Zopar, Richard Losch details each person in a lively narrative style that will have readers sticking around page after page.

The bulk of the work is made up of entries covering familiar and not-so-familiar figures found in Scripture. However, unlike most collections of this kind, the focus falls more on expanding our knowledge about the lesser characters. Losch explains that so very much has been written about the luminaries of Scripture that he chose to focus instead on those who are less well known and on some of the less familiar aspects of well-known characters' lives.

Names of people who are listed only in genealogies or who had no significant effect on history or legend are included solely in the appendix. The appendix's alphabetical listing of every person named in the Bible and Apocrypha includes pronunciation, brief identification, and where he or she appears. Those covered in greater detail in the main body of the book are identified in bold print.

Losch's new and intriguing look at all the people in the Bible is anything but a dry reference work. This is a book to dip into and enjoy over and over.

When is "I love this book" week? 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

It's great fun finding oddball days and weeks to celebrate in Chase's Calendar of Events. This is invaluable for libraries and radio stations. Besides telling you when National BBQ Day is, it also gives a few details about various holidays. I can't count the number of times I used this book during my years as a librarian. Often the information can't be found anywhere else.
I haven't tried the CD-ROM but imagine it would be convenient looking things up on Chase's using the computer. The book is well-indexed, so it's easy to use.

Unfortunately.... 2 out of 5 stars.
33 of 55 people found this review helpful.

I wished I could write a good review for this book. However, I can't. I read it. From a literary standpoint, the book is an obvious polemic. Ever evil under the sun can be traced to men, Christianity, and society run by men, (in about that order).

However, her book suffers many flaws. First, she makes some outrageous claims with absolutely no documentation. Second, she makes some outrageous claims with WRONGFUL documentation. That is, whenever one troubles themselves to find the book that she is referencing, it does not say what she says that it does.

Third, many of the books that she uses are outdated and also biased. Almost none of the theories espoused by her have any connection to any modern scholarship. For example, she says that the Arabian religion prior to Muhammad was based upon a group of female prophets who believed the Qur'an was inscribed upon the tablets of destiny much the same as the Goddess Tiamet has absolutely no verifiable reference. I've read many Islamic studies and many dissident scholars, but none of them say that. Wonder why? Same, she gives no reference for that quote.

Because she is worthless as a primary reference, each and every thing she says must be independently confirmed by someone less biased and more reliable. That means, once one goes through the trouble, two things. First, her book is worthless as a source unto itself. Second, whenever this trouble is undertaken, most of it is outdated or plain fabricated. Much the same as she accuses Christian authors. (And I have no bias toward Christianity.)

Editorial Review:

This fascinating, scholarly hodgepodge spotlights the feminist underpinnings of myth, religion, and culture. Before being lionized as zaftig Norse angels who guided strong warriors to Valhalla, Valkyries may have offered rebirth through cannibalization. "Little Red Riding Hood" was based on Diana, goddess of the hunt. Marriage was once considered a sin, not a sacred union: St. Bernard once proclaimed "it was easier for a man to bring the dead back to life than to live with a woman without endangering his soul." A few of the other topics expounded upon are the Milky Way, Cinderella, the moon, and males giving birth. While some of the references put a cranky feminist spin on words that might in context have different meaning--St. Paul's oft-quoted "better to marry than to burn," for example--much in this vast tome will dazzle dabblers and intellectuals alike.
