If we want something
we
say
PLEASE
We say THANK YOU
if you help us or
give us something or
do things for us.
Before we leave the table
we ask if

be
excused.
And say THANK YOU
if we are told we may.

Continuing the success of How to Behave and Why-with hundreds of thousands of copies sold, 50,000 in the last year and a half alone!-comes another gem from the trove of Munro Leaf.

Considered his second most popular book, Manners Can Be Fun was first published in 1936 and is among Munro Leaf's acclaimed "Fun" series, which includes Grammar, Reading, and History. In his signature style of stick-figure illustrations and wholesome text, this charming guide, in which courtesy does not have to be a chore or a response to scolding, makes manners a delight to learn. With such characters as the Mefirsts and the Whineys, children can laugh while absorbing the elementary rules of thoughtfulness and etiquette. To listen, cooperate, act graciously, and share, among others, are invaluable lessons that should never be underestimated, and that help make happy, well-adjusted, and secure children who will one day grow up to be happy, well-adjusted, and secure adults.

Not bad, but disingenous 3 out of 5 stars.
11 of 17 people found this review helpful.

This book is OK. With 1001 questions, there will be at least some that you find useful. My quarrel with this book is that it doesn't advertise itself as being evangelical Christian, but in many ways it is. It has two separate sections of spiritual questions, and a large percentage of them seem to presume that you are an evangelical already. There are two or three token questions about non-Christian religions and perspectives, out of 200.

This carries over in other ways. Most glaring - there are very few questions about dating and romance, no questions about sex and sexuality at all, and no questions about drinking and drug use. At least some of us find these topics juicy conversation, at least under the right circumstances. I wish the author had been more upfront about his biases.

Entertaining and Fun 5 out of 5 stars.

I LOVE this book. I have given this book out as gifts several times. It can be used at dinner parties to make the conversation even more interesting or used as a business tool for tough clients that are hard to get to know. It's also fun to bring along in the car or plane for long trips to past the time. I highly recommend.

One of the best books on gender conversations 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I definitely recommend reading Dr. Tannen's "You Just Don't Understand," even if you think you know all you want to know about the differences between men and women in communication. This is a thoughtful, well-written book analyzing men and women's styles of communication through various studies and anecdotes that not only serve to teach but to also entertain. There are good dialogue conversations in the dynamics of the book and interesting to note the insightful commentary from both perspectives. It is easy to stereotype and have gender bias based on the social norms of our culture, but Tannen provides a fairly balanced view of both subjects. She gives solid support of her findings, which we can often relate to in our relationships. I found myself more intrigued as I read on about the asymmetrical connections between the genders.
For couples, this book may provide a lot of useful suggestions that could improve to open communication. I did not find this book to really skew personal bias favoring either gender. Instead, it reveals the reality that while men and women use different "conversational styles" of achieving the same means, each are important tactics to recognize. After finishing the reading, I feel much more enlightened about the importance of strategizing my listening and conversing skills.

Editorial Review:

Women and men live in different worlds...made of different words.

Spending nearly four years on the New York Times bestseller list, including eight months at number one, You Just Don't Understand is a true cultural and intellectual phenomenon. This is the book that brought gender differences in ways of speaking to the forefront of public awareness. With a rare combination of scientific insight and delightful, humorous writing, Tannen shows why women and men can walk away from the same conversation with completely different impressions of what was said.

Studded with lively and entertaining examples of real conversations, this book gives you the tools to understand what went wrong -- and to find a common language in which to strengthen relationships at work and at home. A classic in the field of interpersonal relations, this book will change forever the way you approach conversations.

A Little Book That Helped A Lot!! 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Great book! Highly recommended. Easy to use, easy to find the topics you need when you need them. The phonetic words are easy to understand, and are spot on with the real corresponding word (with some other phrase books I have tried, the phonetics were not quite right). There are phrases for real situations, even some funny situations, covering everything from being pulled over by police in your rental car to dealing with pushy street venders (which are abundant in Paris! - which came in handy for us when at the Louvre!). There is a menu and food decoder which we referred to quite a bit so as to know what we were ordering to eat. With this book, we were able to communicate easily everywhere we went: the metro, the train station, eateries, museums, grocery store, and even in the countryside where hardly anyone speaks English.

My Spouse and I were in France last month and I had purchased this book weeks ahead of time and began reviewing the phrases inside. By the time we got to France, we both had learned enough to communicate nicely with the people. In Paris, there are a great many people that speak English, or at least understand it a bit, but it's still nice to be able to say something to them in French even if it's just a greeting. But we stayed in the countryside where English is rare, but we got on just fine at the grocery store, the villages, and the cafes with this little book in hand. The easy to use words and phrases are great in a pinch, but as a helpful tip: Don't just buy the book and wait to use it until your there standing at a ticket booth trying to figure what to say - familiarize yourself with the key phrases that are important to you, and where they are located in the book before you even get on the plane.

Editorial Review:

Useful and fun to read, this French phrasebook is the ideal way for travelers to communicate easily and naturally. The typical French dictionary won't show you how to tell the hotel manager "J'ai dormi comme un enfant" ("I slept like a baby") and certainly not "Je suis couvert de piqures des punaises!" ("I'm covered with bug bites!"). This one does!

I would highly recommend buying this for your travels to Italy.

A lifesaver! 5 out of 5 stars.

I don't speak any Italian, so this guidebook was a bit of a lifesaver. I don't like to refer to books when I'm trying to experience the culture, but it was nice to be able to review this at the end of the day or in the morning before we started the day. I tried to learn a few important phrases and feel my way through the rest. We visited Venice, and most people in Venice do speak English. While I can confidently speak French, Italian is quite different (more akin to Spanish). I love the pronunciation guides; they were most helpful.

Editorial Review:

From ATM lingo to train station announcements, this book is packed with useful phrases. Also included are advice on gesturing, telephone tips, and even a handy menu decoder. Features easy-to-read phonetic spellings of common expressions .

The Tendency to Deteriorate 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

Not everything that is old is wise. But this book, written 20 years ago, is jam-packed with wisdom. Max DePree wrote in 1987 that the management team's job "is to provide an environment that allows momentum to gather."

DePree's simple, but profound leadership primer has never been equaled. Read it and you'll marvel at the insights--like in his five-page chapter, "Pink Ice in the Urinal." Few CEOs before him and hardly anyone after him have so eloquently discussed the tendency of organizations to deteriorate like in the pink ice chapter. Even DePree's chapter titles are memorable: Theory Fastball, Tribal Storytelling, Some Thoughts for CEOs Who Build Buildings, and Why Should I Weep?

DePree wrote that a financial analyst once asked him, "What is one of the most difficult things that you personally need to work on?" DePree's answer: "The interception of entropy."

"One of the important things leaders need to learn is to recognize the signals of impending deterioration." He kept a list and observed that leaders, especially in large organizations, fail to see the signs of entropy, including: 1) a tendency toward superficiality; 2) no longer having time for celebration and ritual; 3) a growing feeling that rewards and goals are the same thing; 4) when people stop telling tribal stories or cannot understand them; and 5) when problem-makers outnumber problem-solvers. His list was longer--but you get the idea.

The pink ice in the urinal? It was a team member's odd suggestion for dressing up the men's room for their VIP visitors. "Despite the good intentions behind this idea," DePree commented that the team member was signaling a clear deterioration in thinking and strategizing. The pink ice in the urinal would have little effect on the VIPs--so why bother? Focus on the strategic, not the cosmetic.

Editorial Review:

First published in 1989, Max DePree's timeless words now bring his practical philosophy to a new generation of readers. More than ever, he provides necessary insights and guidelines to leaders in every field.

The Simple Art of Napkin Folding 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Helpful book has many ideas for those who still like to set a nice table and actually use cloth napkins.

Editorial Review:

Use The Simple Art of Napkin Folding to duplicate those beautiful napkin folds you've admired at elegant restaurants and memorable events. It's easy with Linda Hetzer's detailed step-by-step directions and illustrations.  Using cloth or paper napkins, create standing triangular-shaped folds (the "Tavern") for dinner parties.  A few accordion pleats transforms a piece of cloth into the "Poinsettia." Need festive ideas for a children's birthday party?  Make "Sailboats" or "Paper Airplanes." Graduate to more intricate designs that combine napkins with silverware, flowers, and wineglasses.

Special features include

  • A stain removal guide for heirloom linens and synthetic fabrics
  • Easy-to-follow instructions for making napkin rings
  • Graphs for embroidering initials on napkins
  • Instructions for stenciling your own napkins

Filled with inspired ideas, The Simple Art of Napkin Folding turns any square of fabric into a work of art.
