Good, but there are better summary versions of Robert's Rules 3 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book was good as a way to get started in becoming familiar with Robert's Rules. However, a better introductory guide is Robert's Rules in Plain English. If you are new to Robert's Rules, my suggestion is get the Plain English book and read it cover to cover. It's short and will tell you 95% of what you'll probably need to know. If you need any further details, then you should move on to the full version of Robert's Rules. In my opinion, this book (...In Brief) is a little more dry and with lower quality examples than "Plain English."

Roberts Rules Okay 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Its good, but a little confusing for a newbie to parlimartry procedure. There seem to be a couple of references to tables that I've not located yet.

Editorial Review:

Originally published as a slim document in 1896, General Henry M. Robert's classic guide to smooth, orderly, and fairly conducted meetings has sold close to five million copies in nine editions. The only book containing the completely developed Robert's Rules of Order subject matter, this latest edition will continue the book's reputation as the gold standard of meeting procedure for parliamentarians and novice club presidents and members alike. Thoroughly revised and updated to reflect the past decade's technological advances and usage, this tenth edition contains new information on how to conduct meetings over the Internet, on phone and video conference calls, and with members in absentia. The best book from which to learn all about running and taking an effective part in meetings, General Robert's gift of order is as indispensable now as it was a century ago.

Editorial Review:

If you belong to any type of organization—from school board to garden club to bowling league to trade association—chances are this book can save you many boring meeting minutes. Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised is the current authoritative guide for properly conducting everything from sessions of the U.S. Senate or House of Representative to meetings of neighborhood associations. This friendly guide translates Robert’s Rules into principles you can understand and apply the next time Billy Bully tries to dominate the discussion or Debbie Dictator issues another edict. If you’ve ever been frustrated at the way condominium association business was (or wasn’t) conducted or fidgeted while PTA members debated whether to have goldfish or pencils as prizes for the elementary school carnival, this is the book for you. Written by a Professional Registered Parliamentarian, it covers:
  • The basics of bylaws that establish the real framework of your organization, and nine things that should be covered
  • The requirements for a legal meeting
  • How to use an agenda to plan your meeting and keep things on track
  • Following the standard order of business
  • How to put ideas into motion and the eight steps to handling a motion
  • Voting procedure and different methods of voting
  • The functions and characteristics of seven subsidiary motions, five privileged motions, fifteen incidental motions, and four motions which bring a question again before the assembly
  • Nomination procedures, holding elections, and making appointments

With Robert’s Rules For Dummies, you’ll not only discover how to hold more effective meetings, you’ll get advice for dealing with malcontents or monopolizers who can disrupt, derail, or prolong meetings. And if you’re in a leadership position, you’ll get great information on:

  • Running meetings efficiently and fairly
  • Effectively using standing and special committees
  • Ensuring proper paperwork, including minutes, treasurer’s reports, committee reports, and more
  • Handling discipline or removing officers or members

Complete with a glossary of parliamentary terms and sample agendas, reports, and minutes, this guide has everything you need but a gavel. Whether you belong to an elite country club or a civic organization, an investment club or a volunteer fire department, when you use the principles in this book, meetings won’t be dominated by the loudest or pushiest member or go on and on and on and on and on….

excellent companion volume 5 out of 5 stars.
13 of 13 people found this review helpful.

Do not be confused. This book is not Robert's Rules of Order (RROO). It is a companion volume designed to explain RROO. It is, however, a very good companion which I found to be very easy to understand and contained some very up-to-date information like how to vote by e-mail.

It has some other nice features like scripts to use in meetings. However, it lacks a simple table of motions, something that is included in most versions of RROO.

Unfortunately, the most up-to-date official version of RROO (the Newly Revised, 10th edition) is a huge book compared to the original volume that Mr. Robert wrote in 1876 as a pocket guide. To me, the large size makes the newest edition virtually useless. If you are interested in parliamentary procedure for a PTO, club, or church business meetings, you are also unlikely to need the most recent edition.

The last edition that Robert himself was personally involved in before his death was the 1915 Revised edition (not to be confused with the Newly Revised versions). This was the official version for many decades and I think is still good enough for most users. I purchased a paperback re-print of this edition from 1970 which also added a new preface by Robert's grandson.

Some supposedly modern editions of RROO are really just re-writes of the original 1876 version. I assume that as the original book is so old, it has long run out of copyright, so anybody can publish their own RROO. This may be a good thing as people looking for a more slimmed-down book may be happier with a modernized version of Robert's original pocket version. However, the 1915 edition, while expanded significantly over the original, is not so huge and I think a reasonable compromise.

So, to make a long story short. I would recommend purchasing some official version of RROO (again, I like the 1915 edition) along with Webster's book.

Editorial Review:

This is the clearest, most useful guide to parliamentary procedure, now with new information on effective and reliable procedures for nominations, elections, ballots, balloting, and ballot counting.

We don't wear wigs and robes! We're a casual, social club. 5 out of 5 stars.
22 of 23 people found this review helpful.

If you've always feared having to pull out the ol' Robert's Rules of Order because it was too detailed and complex for the casual social organizations in which you participated, help is here. Someone has realized that, because a group might need parliamentary procedures, it does not need the granularity required by The Parliament of England.

The Standard Code of Parliamentary Procedure is understandable, comprehensive, logical, refined, and efficient. As it should, it covers all the formal business of holding a productive and respectful meeting. But it also includes procedures that facilitate business for the less formal organization or club.

Necessary jargon is defined in a glossary. The "Often-Asked Questions" section covers many common situations and eliminates the need to look through the chapters for most answers. The book is up-to-date, addressing contemporary and often-encountered situations such as holding meetings and elections via the telephone or Internet.

As a bonus, it serves as a resource to those trying to form an organization. There are chapters to help you prepare documents (like bylaws and financial records) that won't be in conflict with legal and parliamentary procedures down the line. It explains the hierarchy of documents that govern an organization. There's even a section that helps explain some of the arcane procedures in Robert's Rules!

I'm grateful to have found this gem. It deals with all the situations that my clubs have encountered.

Editorial Review:

Already the acclaimed choice of thousands of successful organizations including the American Library Association, the Fourth Edition features an all-new chapter that considers the ways the Internet and other state-of-the-art technologies have rewritten the rules of today’s meetings and conventions. This easy-to-use, paperback volume—the popular alternative to Robert’s Rules—is the most comprehensive, understandable, and logical guide to smooth-running, professional meetings. Alice Sturgis was a practicing parliamentarian and consultant to national and international professional and business organizations. She taught at Stanford University and the University of California.

Robert's Rules, Rules! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Robert's Rules of Order is a great tool for conducting meetings and outlines how we conduct them in a fair and orderly way. Without this book, the political organization I am involved in would be a lot less organized and allows us to get serious about fulfilling our organizational goals instead of wasting our time getting bogged down in procedure. This is the classic edition, and is an excellent and straight to the point version of this important work, as opposed to some other editions which are much larger revised editions that can get confusing and redundant.

Editorial Review:

It has been said by one of the greatest of English writers on parliamentary law: "Whether these forms be in all cases the most rational or not is really not of so great importance. It is much more material that there should be a rule to go by, than what that rule is, that there may be a uniformity of proceeding in business, not subject to the caprice of the chairman, or captiousness of the members. It is very material that order, decency and regularity be preserved in a dignified public body." This work is the classic edition of Robert's Rules of Order. Originally published in 1875, Roberts Rules of Order is a manual of rules for deliberative assemblies and is often used in business, government and other governing bodies.

This is the one 5 out of 5 stars.

This is the one you want if you are a novice at parliamentary procedure. After experiencing several unruly church conferences I began looking for an easy to use book, this is it. The center of the book indexes all the basic procedures you will need. I compliment the author in making it easy to use and not making the reader drowsy.

It is still very complicated and am not sure it will meet our needs.

I found this very helpful and easy to understand.

In the heat of the meeting, reach for this book! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

The center pages of this little book are worth the book's purchase price all by themselves. Every kind of motion and amendment are listed in their priority, making it extremely easy to untangle the knots that many of us get into when the meeting we are leading suddenly has a flurry of motions. Keep it handy, open it to the center, and you will see at a glance what to do and who is right in their understanding of the way to handle a particular motion.

I was introduced to this book in a parliamentary procedure class - the copyright of my edition is 1971! I have referred to it ever since and given it to many friends and organizations.
