Good for a Start or for Part of a Larger Strategy 5 out of 5 stars.

Turns out to be great. At first, I rolled my eyes at the little songs, feeling a little like I was listening to a Barney show. But it was in the privacy of my own car, so I just went with it. But then started noticing that the songs DO stick in your mind AND you remember what the spanish phrases/words mean! I am visual, though, so I needed to take a look at the booklet that has the "script" so I could understand what the spelling of the word was that they were saying. That helps a lot. First, I had rented a language DVD from Netflix. I found it grating and couldn't get far, but I did get through the pronunciation piece first. That way, if presented with a phrase like "Quiero aprender a communicarme en enspanol" that a native spanish speaking friend wrote for me, I can at least pronounce it correctly (or close enough to be understood). It is much more motivating to find that while your vocabulary is limited, the parts you DO know can be understood. Next, I start listening to these cds and check the booklet. Finally I went with the suggestion of another reviewer and bought a spanish instruction book (Madrigal's Magic Spanish). I am also considering buying 501 Spanish verbs conjugated. That was great when I used to study French years ago. I add some fun into it by nagging my spanish speaking friend at work to give me a sentence every once in a while. The native speakers at work are willing to discuss it with me now and then, which is nice. I guess people appreciate you TRYING to speak their language (especially since english speaking Americans have a rep for NOT trying). If you just want to dip your toe in to try it out and see if it sustains your interest OR if you just need survival communication for a trip, these tapes along with something that helps you with pronunciation by letter, are a good bet. So those are my recommendations.

Barron's Learn Spanish the Fast and Fun Way with CD's 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This book is ok as a basic teaching guide. Sentences written in Spanish are not always converted to English which makes it harder to learn. The CD's tend to jump around and don't always follow the book.

Hope you are traveling... 4 out of 5 stars.

This was more focused on how to travel in Spain but the activities were pretty good. I used this book for a class.

La mejor novela de nuestros tiempos! Es obligatorio leerla! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This the most important novels written by this author which everyone must read. With this novel he won the 1982 Novel Prizze in Literature.

Very good way to immerse yourself 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

To help read more fluently this book is good, because you can actually hear the pronunciations. You learn new vocabulary and also various cultures of spanish speaking people.

I would say a beginner may have some trouble, and would be refering to a dictionary alot. The book introduces you to new words and their meaning, but not every single word. When you are a beginner (at beginning stages of a beginner), your vocabulary is not big enough to keep up. But, I would say as your vocabulary increases, the better able you are to keep up, so it's not just for intermediate and advanced. The speaker talks at a regular speed and may seem too fast for a beginner at first, but like I said it is a great way to just throw yourself in.

"Of all our feelings the only one which doesn't belong to us is hope. Hope belongs to life, it's life defending itself." 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 13 people found this review helpful.

It has taken me years to sit down and finally make a serious commitment to read Julio Cortazar's "Hopscotch/La Rayuela." I cannot think of a better companion to devote a few weeks to, maybe even longer - hey, whatever it takes! It depends on your reading speed and the time you take to truly savor the poetry of the author's language. So, be willing to make a small personal investment in this very special novel, and the reward you reap will be a worthy one. Julio Cortazar will take you to places you have never been before in literature, and may never experience again. I read "Hopscotch" over this past summer, after a thirty year delay. I can be very stubborn about putting off what is good for me!! The author's imagination is boundless, his prose rich and luminous, his wit and sophistication rare, the dialogue brilliant, the plot...I won't attempt to describe that with a few adjectives. Wander through the extraordinary labyrinthine plot on you own - the way is yours to discover. I promise, you won't get lost!

I was introduced to "La Rayuela" about thirty years ago, when a close friend, with similar reading tastes, gave me the book. Enthused after just reading the novel, he told me that I reminded him of one of the characters, La Maga. (What a compliment...I think!). I was living in Latin America at the time. With personal interests at stake and much curiosity, I bought a copy in Spanish, which I read with some fluency back then. After experimenting with which way to approach the novel, and trying both ways, I gave up...and just read the parts about La Maga. I had little patience at that point in my life, and needed to acquire some, and to read slower, with more of a sense of play and participation. Cortazar wants his readers to participate - to make reading his book an interactive experience, not a passive one. I was and still feel touched when I remember my friend's comments regarding La Maga. She is a magnificent character and Cortazer's prose, his language, (Spanish), is exquisite. So, about a year later, I thought I'd give it another try, in English, perhaps with better results. None! I just wasn't ready, I guess. That happens to me with fiction occasionally. I have to be open to the experience. Yet, after all these years, I still thought of Horacio Oliveira and La Maga from time to time. And why not? They are truly unforgettable. As I wrote above, I did make time, at last. For an adventure of a lifetime, I recommend you do the same.

When Julio Cortazar published "La Rayuela" in 1966, he turned the conventional novel upside-down and the literary world on its ear with this experiment in writing fiction. He soon became an important influence on writers everywhere. "Hopscotch" is considered to be one of the best novels written in Spanish. The work is interactive, where readers are invited to rearrange its text and read sections in different sequences. Read in a linear fashion, "Hopscotch" contains 700 pages, 155 chapters in three sections: "From the Other Side," and "From This Side" - the first two sections are sustained by relatively chronological narratives and so contrast greatly with the third section, "From Diverse Sides," (subtitled "Expendable Chapters"), which includes philosophical extrapolation, character study, allusions and quotations, and an entirely different version of the "ending."

The book has no table of contents, but rather a "Table of Instructions." There, we learn that two approved readings are possible: from Chapter 1 through 56 "in a normal fashion", or from Chapter 73 to Chapter 1 to... well, wherever the chapters lead you. The instructions are all in your book and are extremely clear. At the end of each chapter there is a numeric indicator to lead the reader to the next chapter. One never knows where one will be lead. Due to its meandering nature, "Hopscotch" has been called a "Proto-hypertext" novel. Cortázar probably had this work in mind when he stated, "If I had the technical means to print my own books, I think I would keep on producing collage-books."

Horacio Oliveira, our protagonist and sometimes narrator, is an Argentinean expatriate, an intellectual and professed writer in 1950's bohemian Paris. He and his close friends, members of "the Club," do lots of partying, drinking, and intellectualizing, discussing art, literature, music and solving the world's problems. Oliveira lives with and loves La Maga, an exotic young woman, somewhat whimsical, at times almost ephemeral, who leaves behind her, like the scent of a light perfume, a feeling of poignancy and inevitable loss. La Maga refuses to plan her encounters with Oliveira in advance, preferring instead to run into each other by chance. Then she and Oliveira celebrate the series of circumstances that reunite them. Eventually, he loses La Maga, who loses her child. With her absence, Oliveira realizes how empty and meaningless his life is and he returns to his native Buenos Aires. There he finds work first as a salesman, then a keeper of a circus cat, and an attendant in an insane asylum.

As Oliveira wends his way through France, Uruguay and Argentina looking for his lost love, "Hopscotch's" narrative takes on an emotionally intense stream of consciousness style, rich in metaphor. Back In Argentina, Oliveira shares his life with his bizarre double, Traveler, and Traveler's wife, Talita, whom Oliveira attempts to remake into a facsimile of La Maga.

The game of hopscotch is only developed as a conceit late in the narrative. It is first used to describe Oliveira's confused love for La Maga as "that crazy hopscotch." The theme develops as a metaphor for reaching Heaven from Earth. "When practically no one has learned how to make the pebble climb into Heaven, childhood is over all of a sudden and you're into novels, into the anguish of the senseless divine trajectory, into the speculation about another Heaven that you have to learn to reach too." The variations on the children's game are described as "spiral hopscotch, rectangular hopscotch, fantasy hopscotch, not played very often." The allusions continue and include some beautiful passages.

"Hopscotch" is much more than a novel. Ultimately, it is best left for each reader to define what it is for himself/herself. Pablo Neruda in a famous quote said, "People who do not read Cortazar are doomed. Not to read him is a serious invisible disease." I don't know whether I would go so far. Remember, I put off the experience for many years. But this is one novel that should be read during one's lifetime. It is brilliant and it is fun!

Innovative Approach designed for the self-learner 5 out of 5 stars.

There are a few things that you need to learn Spanish on your own.
Besides a Spanish verb conjugation book (501 Spanish Verbs - highly recommended), a Spanish/English dictionary, Spanish audio course (Learning Spanish Like Crazy - highly recommended), you'll need Spanish Grammar for Independent Learners. Alternatively, you can use the Practice Makes Perfect book series to learn the Spanish grammar. But if you are learning on your own you may like this one better. That's because this book was specifically made for the person that is learning Spanish on his own.

Although I sometimes have the opportunity to practice with native speakers, for the most part, I am learning on my own. This book is giving me plenty of value, especially by teaching me different self-correcting techniques that I can use in place of an instructor. Avigail Azoulay and Arie Vicente's self-correction method has also helped me build my confidence in speaking Spanish without the aid of a Spanish teacher.

If you are an independent learner, get this book, get 501 Spanish Verbs, and get Learning Spanish Like Crazy (Nivel Uno and Nivel Dos), and you'll learn plenty of Spanish without attending classes or having an istructor. If you are not an independent learner and need someone to keep you motivated to study, then you shouldn't even be considering this book.

Editorial Review:

Helpful for beginners 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This is a quck reference card intended as a companion to the Barron's book -- 501 Verbs. It is not sufficient on its own. However it is a very dense compilation of essentials, much more easily accessed than having to dig through the 501 or similar grammar books when one is first learning the ropes and framework of Spanish.

I used this card very, very frequently for my first month of independent spanish study. I greatly appreciated having a compact source of key things I needed to read over and over while trying to form a landscape view of this language. I am still pulling it out often to review key points. I am now at the start of month #3.

On one side of the card (3 pages worth when unfolded), it describes the purpose of each of the 7 simple tenses, the 7 compound tenses, the imperativo, the progressive forms, participles (Present and Past) as well as active versus passive voices. Key examples are given. On the other side is a very detailed conjugation plus English translation of a model verb (comer). Then the same table used in 501 is given for several strategically chosen regular and irregular verbs: dar, decir, estar, haber, hablar, hacer, ir and lavar.

The overall presentation of the card utilizes good graphics and color coded variations to assist in quickly finding the highlights. Without this feature, the very dense amount of information would be overwhelming -- but given the authors/publishers attention to detail -- I find it to be very user friendly.

The card is laminated and should be durable if kept reasonably protected in a notebook. Using it during my novice stage of exploring Spanish clearly saved a lot of wear and tear on my copy of 501 Verbs -- a resource needed indefinitely.

Editorial Review:

Approximately 300 most frequently used Spanish verbs are presented, one verb per page, arranged alphabetically, fully conjugated, and identified by the English infinitive form. Books in this series are smaller and shorter versions of Barron's 501 Verbs series. They make handy quick-reference sources for language students, teachers, and translators.

La vida es un juego... aqui estan las reglas!! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Suena increible? Lealo y despues me cuenta. Puedo afirmar que si la vida es un juego, aqui estan las reglas que hemos estado buscando durante tanto tiempo. Sonria! Dios lo bendice!

Refrito... 2 out of 5 stars.
13 of 21 people found this review helpful.
