If Gabriel Garcia Marquez grew breasts and developed feminist leanings... 1 out of 5 stars.
1 of 3 people found this review helpful.

Could "The House of the Spirits" be the greatest rip-off in the history of literature?

It's like Allende read "One Hundred Years of Solitude" one day and thought, "You know, I really like this story and the way that it's written, except that there's not enough socialism and female empowerment in it. Hmmm...I KNOW, I think I'll REWRITE IT to include more of these aspects and change the characters' and places' names and the title so people will think it's my own book." Well, she did it. It's "One Hundred Years of Solitude" all over again, more politically-correct and less well-written.

And now this book is studied in the prestigious International Baccalaureate English program by the smartest and most motivated high school students. It's a sign of the times, where books like this and "Mother to Mother" by Sindiwe Magona are studied over genuine classics in the name of political correctness.

Editorial Review:

Strange 3 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

this book was very engrossing and a fairly fast read. I actually threw it away when I was finished with it, which I can't remember ever doing with a book. I either keep my books or give them away. I found this book to be quite disturbing, and one that stuck with me in a most unpleasant way. The book gets 3 stars because of the writing style, but I could not bring myself to pass it on to another reader.

Morbid boring and graphic 1 out of 5 stars.

I read this book and didn't care for it at all. Certain parts of the book were depressing and morbid. All it talked about the scent of perfume and murders. The story was really weird and did not care for it at all. The writing was a bit confusing and boring. I'm just glad I bought the 1986 trade paperback edition at a supermarket used book drive for charity. I forced myself to finish this.

Editorial Review:

Survivor, genius, perfumer, killer: this is Jean-Baptiste Grenouille. He is abandoned on the filthy streets of Paris as a child, but grows up to discover he has an extraordinary gift: a sense of smell more powerful than any other human's. Soon, he is creating the most sublime fragrances in all the city. Yet there is one odor he cannot capture. It is exquisite, magical: the scent of a young virgin. And to get it he must kill. And kill. And kill.

Muchas palabras y muchas historias 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

This book is excellent. I have gone thru it from A to Z and find virtually no faults with it. There are well over 10,000 words presented, and they are words that are commonly used in every day language. There are plenty of exercises to test your learning abilities. Also there are short stories using the words you have just learned and some you have learned in previous sections. For example, after presenting some legal terms, the author presents a discussion of the "Trial of the Century" - a discussion of the O.J. Simpson trial using some of the legal words you just learned. She discusses weights and measures, then gets into a discussion (in spanish of course) on the history and how make a Harvey Wallbanger. The book is full of many catagories of words and followed up with exercises and stories. She does not try to overwhelm you with spanish grammer, as the entire book concentrates on vocabulary and not verb tenses/grammer, and she does this by keeping the whole book in the Present Tense. Even though many of the stories happened in the past, she keeps them simple by writing them in the present, but concentrating on the words just covered. This way you concentrate on vocabluary and not so much on grammer. Over 10,000 words is a lot to learn, but she presents them is such a way that retention is enhanced. Give it a try, its a great book!!

Opinion of Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent book. Its approach to teaching a language is unique in that it gives fourteen patterns of Spanish words relating to English words. Rather than learning one word at a time, I can learn 50 - 100 words. I don't even have to learn individual words. I just have to remember the pattern, e.g. words ending in "ity" in English usually end in "idad" in Spanish. I also have been able to apply some of these patterns to other Latin-based languages such as French and Italian. This has been a great help to me since I sometimes do research work in Europe. Thank you for making this book available to us at such a reasonable price.

Very good 4 out of 5 stars.

OK, it's not perfect. It is, however, a good book, better than most textbooks, and way, way ahead of Berlitz, for learning Spanish. Most Americans think they can learn a language in like 2-3 weeks. This is not so. It takes consistent practice to learn a language. This book supports that rather well. I'm sure the author is long gone, however, the book lives on. It is cited in The Next Whole Earth Catalog, by way, which is why I got my first copy of it.

Editorial Review:

Anyone can read, write, and speak Spanish in only a few short weeks with this unique and proven method, which completely eliminates rote memorization and boring drills.

Practical Phrases For Real Life 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I'm using this book to help expose my son to Spanish at a young age. It's full of very useful phrases that you just don't learn in Spanish class in high school or college. I have not listened to the cd much, but hope to get more use of it down the road. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn common phrases that you really can use with your children. It's probably best for someone who has had a few years of Spanish study.

A David Attenborough of the literary world. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Like Mr. Attenborough, Graham Green has roamed the world. His interests were not primarily plants and animals, but representatives of the human species, often those profoundly flawed. His novels are set in Vietnam, Sierra Leone, Haiti, Cuba, Mexico, and more. His characters play out their drama against these exotic backgrounds, the expatriates and the natives, and almost certainly it is an interaction between these groups that is a dynamo which drives the novel forward. I used to think that "The Quiet American," set in Vietnam, was his finest, but after re-reading "The Power and the Glory," I would rank them equally.

It is pre-World War II Mexico, anti-clerical forces are reigning, and therefore the agents of the Catholic Church are outside the law, often literally hunted, and if caught, executed. The two principal characters are reflected in each noun of the title, a police lieutenant who vows to bring in the last functioning priest in the province. This is the principal thread of dynamic tension that unifies the novel. There is a similar thread within the hunted priest himself. He is considered a "whiskey priest," with a fondness for brandy, and he has a daughter. Does he really want to escape his pursers, or does he believe his capture would be just punishment for his sins? It is a many-faceted issue that is used to explore his character.

Graham also populates his novel with numerous minor characters, mainly part of the human detritus that has washed up in this developmental backwater. There is an American dentist, barely surviving with his antique tools; a steamship captain, his wife and their precocious daughter; and a German-American couple who have opted for Mexico instead of submitting to conscription during WW I. There are also the natives, a "half-cast" who haunts the priest, and a touchingly stubborn Indian woman with her dead infant.

In reading Greene, and particularly such a novel on the Catholic Church, it is important to reflect that according to his biographers, Greene himself was both Catholic, and profoundly flawed. Along with the works of Carlos Fuentes, this is a quintessential book on Mexico, and therefore a vital read for all Americans in particular.

Editorial Review:

The nearness to God trough sinning. A priest has fallen down and finds himself in the middle of a violent revolution in a Latin-American country. Characteristic of the revolutionaries is their atheistic trend and suddenly the priest, regardless of his vices, finds himself in the dilemma that will allow him to return to his beliefs. This it is the basic topic of the great novel from the English writer Graham Greene, one of the most brilliant playwright and British novelists of the 20th century. He explores in a story full of suspense, a profound thesis that has made of this, one of the most popular works of the writer.

El amor en los tiempos del colera by Gabriel Garcia Marquez 4 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

Very enjoyable read due to the language, his spanish is very rich and involves you very easily, it's delightful. The plot is ok, with an end somewhat dissapointing.
However, I am in a book club and all my friends read it in english. All of them disliked it. I have read some of it in english and it is not the same, the words are very similar but the diction is not entirely right so it makes it full of long, convoluted phrases. A pity.

Romance recomendable 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is still a treasure! 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

I started reading the Henry Huggins books to my son when he was 5 years old. We read a chapter every night and my husband would come in to see what was going on because we were laughing so much! When Henry's mom gave him a home haircut, we cried we laughed so hard. My son is now 22 years old, and he still has his Henry Huggins books. He is saving them for when he has children of his own. I highly recommed these books and anything by Beverly Cleary. Reading with your children is such a joy and these books bring back the wonderful memories that my son and I made while hanging out with Henry and Ribsy.

Fantastic 5 out of 5 stars.

I have a number of Ramona CD's so thought I'd venture out into Henry Huggins. As much as I love Ramona, this Henry CD is the best, due in part to the voice of Neil Patrick Harris. My son loves to listen to a CD every night before going to bed, and he requests this one more often than any other. It's amazing to think that Beverly Cleary's book, written 50 years ago, can still appeal to youngsters today. It's timeless. Thank you Beverly Cleary!

This Conversational program contains 8 hours of interactive audio-only instruction, effective language learning with real-life spoken practice sessions.

HEAR IT, LEARN IT, SPEAK IT®

What is the Pimsleur® difference?

The Pimsleur Method provides the most effective language-learning program ever developed. The Pimsleur Method gives you quick command of Spanish structure without tedious drills. Learning to speak Spanish can actually be enjoyable and rewarding.

The key reason most people struggle with new languages is that they aren't given proper instruction, only bits and pieces of a language. Other language programs sell only these pieces -- dictionaries; grammar books and instructions; lists of hundreds or thousands words and definitions; audios containing useless drills. They leave it to you to assemble these pieces as you try to speak. Pimsleur enables you to spend your time learning to speak the language rather than just studying its parts.

When you were learning English, could you speak before you knew how to conjugate verbs? Of course you could. That learning process is what Pimsleur replicates. Pimsleur presents the whole language as one integrated piece so you can succeed.

With Pimsleur you get:

  • Grammar and vocabulary taught together in everyday conversation,
  • Interactive audio-only instruction that teaches spoken language organically,
  • The flexibility to learn anytime, anywhere,
  • 30-minute lessons designed to optimize the amount of language you can learn in one sitting.

Millions of people have used Pimsleur to gain real conversational skills in new languages quickly and easily, wherever and whenever -- without textbooks, written exercises, or drills.

Conversational Spanish includes the 10 lessons from Pimsleur's Basic Spanish plus an additional 6 lessons.

The 16 lessons in Conversational Spanish are the same first 16 lessons in the Pimsleur Comprehensive Spanish Level 1.
