Great teaching tool 5 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I used this book with a group of pre-kindergarten children and they really enjoyed it. I often refer to the book in my classroom and they can recall the story. Reading this book to my children really reduced the tattle taling that was going on.

Reporting/Tattling 4 out of 5 stars.

We are using this book in second grade. We teach the kids the difference between tattling and reporting. This book uses those phrases. It even has 2 reproducibles in the back. The only negative is it is written in a weird rhyme/rap way that is a tad hard to read.

Tattlin' Madeline 4 out of 5 stars.

I would have wanted to know the targeted age for the reader (or listener) for this story. The author masterfully teaches the value of social skills.

Tattlin' Madeline 5 out of 5 stars.

The preface of the book had great question-prompts and ideas for the reader to use. Excellent help!

Editorial Review:

A book designed to teach young children the difference between tattling and reporting. Written in rhyme to read aloud or for guided reading, providing repeated word patterns and predictable text. One of a series of eight social skill books written by Dr. Carol Cummings.

Excellent Academic Literature book 5 out of 5 stars.

I had to buy this book for a literature class, and it is chock full of everything from poetry to plays to fiction, long and short stories. Nice book. Have been reading more than the required because it has such a nice selection.

Portable Literature: Reading, Reacting, Writing 4 out of 5 stars.

This book is a good small edition to the full-sized book. While it is off in page numbers, and thusly creates the need to admit to not having the full text, the book itself had everything I needed for my class.

Excellent resource for any aspiring writer 4 out of 5 stars.

A very good language book 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I have started my Chinese studies from an other language book during a language course, but after a time we have changed to New Practical Chinese Reader, which was far more better. Maybe those who have studied English as foreign language like me agree that this is a good book. Its main story is about some students studying in Beijing, and the lessons are about their life. From the very first lesson there are enjoyable conversations and useful phrases, so we can have the impression of a rapid progression which is important for guarding the motivation. The lessons have good structures and a good balance of texts and exercises, each lessons contains model phrases and explanation for the stroke order. It is easy to follow the instructions. There are not too much new words in one lesson, so one can manage to study them lesson by lesson.

Editorial Review:

The first volume of the long-awaited revised edition of the popular Practical Chinese Reader series are finally available! This completely new edition (it will encompass six volumes in 70 lessons when completed) takes the student from an absolute beginner to an intermediate level, approximately 3 years of higher-level classroom instruction. The text follows the story of Ding Libo (the son of Gubo and Ding Yun from the first edition) and other international students as they live in China, learning about Chinese culture and society as they learn contemporary Mandarin. Emphasizing the basic skills of reading, writing (simplified characters), speaking, and listening, with supplementary exercises, many illustrations, charts, and in a larger 8 x 11 format.

Editorial Review:

Compiled under the sponsorship of the China National Office for Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language (NOTCFL) and in consultation with the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK) Guidelines, the New Practical Chinese Reader (NPCR) series is designed to help native English speakers easily learn Chinese. Based on the time-tested Practical Chinese Reader (PCR), the revised and updated NPCR combines the grammatical strengths of the old PCR with contemporary material and more emphasis on learning to use Chinese in everyday conversation.

NPCR consists of 70 lessons in six volumes, covering beginning to intermediate levels, for three years of instruction. Features include balanced training in speaking, pronounciation, grammar, and vocabulary; gradual increases in difficulty, and a cyclical approach to learning with constant review of language structures, functions, and cultural knowledge; an abundance of practice material suitable for students to use inside and outside the classroom; and a new, systematic approach to the teaching of Chinese characters.

A must for any college English course 5 out of 5 stars.
7 of 8 people found this review helpful.

Ackley's text is quite simply a work of pedagogical genius. As a college professor, I have used this text with remarkable results. It not only introduces the reader to a broad spectrum of thought provoking issues, but also helps to strengthen his/her thinking skills, unfortunately a forgotten art for many of today's college freshmen. As the title indicates, the book covers a wide range of subject areas from rock and roll to bisexuality. The student is motivated to react, and therefore think about, the various issues raised in the readings. The exhaustive section on the writing of a research paper is a great help for the instructor as it is so thorough that no extra information is required. This book certainly receives an A+ from this professor.

Editorial Review:

This cross-disciplinary reader encourages critical thinking and academic writing by presenting students with a variety of perspectives on current issues from across the curriculum. Contemporary issues engage the student, while the thematically grouped readings provide rich material for both in-class discussion and writing topics.

This is the best book I have come across for teaching a young child to read. I have used this book with three children, all at various ability levels. It is organized in an easy to use manner with clear instructions. This book allows the parent (or anyone) to sit with the child rather than instruct the child in a workbook. I would also recommend this book for anyone with an elementary age child that needs review, or who has reading difficulties. The progression allows for review as necessary.
