Great Reference 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

THE ELEMENTS OF STYLE is a great little pocket reference for all writers (creative, essay, or nonfiction).

What is most amazing is how it consolidates a wealth of information into accessible, bite-size chapters that are easy to search on and then easy to comprehend.

The sections that I have found the most helpful are:
1) Verb Subject Agreement for the exceptions, "one of" and "each and every".
2) Why using the Active Voice is better through exhibition and not b/c it's the general rule.
3) Putting statements into positive form (something I had not considered).
4) And the entire section on "Approach to Style".

I think that for the price, you can not go wrong with this one. I have GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT by Stilman and SOLUTIONS FOR WRITERS by Stein, both of which I recommend, but if you had to choose the order in which to buy: ELEMENTS OF STYLE, SOLUTIONS FOR WRITERS (as it's not just about writing but the craft of story telling), and then GRAMMATICALLY CORRECT.

Editorial Review:

A masterpiece in the art of clear and concise writing, and an exemplar of the principles it explains.

Illustrations are superfluous 1 out of 5 stars.
3 of 4 people found this review helpful.

I could've done without the illustrations in this edition of the Elements of Style. Also, they've put the page numbers on the inside margins of the pages. So if you look up a reference in the index, you then have to open the book wide to find the page number, which should be placed on the outer margin where it's easy to spot as you flip through.

All I wanted was the Elements of Style, which is a great book. I'll buy the normal edition. This one is irritating.

Editorial Review:

Recommended 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

This is a book well suited to both beginners and intermediate English students. The grammatical topics are well discussed but the exercises do not pose any challenge for the learners, in fact, this is the reason behind my four stars rating. Despite of being sometimes boring, the exhausting exercises of this book will help you to learn the main topics of the English language as regular workouts can help you to be in shape.

Editorial Review:

English Grammar in Use Third edition is a fully updated version of the classic grammar title. It retains all the key features of clarity and accessibility that have made the book popular with students and teachers alike. Designed to be flexible, the book is available both with and without answers, making it ideal for self-study, but also suitable for reinforcement work in the classroom. The 'with answers' version of the book comes with a handy pull-out reference panel which allows students to review key grammar points at a glance. The book is also available with a CD-ROM, giving hundreds of interactive exercises to reinforce the language learned in the book.

A Walk (Through the Dictionary) Not Spoiled! 4 out of 5 stars.
4 of 4 people found this review helpful.

Shea produces here a very entertaining and enlightening glance at both a dictionary that is so large that many homes don't have a shelf that can hold it all as well as a glimpse into the madness of someone crazy enough to want to read such a book. Sure, you'll learn a few new words and laugh at a lot of words that you didn't know existed, but at the same time you see the workings of a human being who's excited by an activity which many would consider the definition of "boring". The author injects the dictionary with personality and intrigue, and it makes for a very good, quick read. Absolutely worth your time.

Editorial Review:

An obsessive word lover’s account of reading the Oxford English Dictionary cover to cover.

“I’m reading the OED so you don’t have to. If you are interested in vocabulary that is both spectacularly useful and beautifully useless, read on...”

So reports Ammon Shea, the tireless, word-obsessed, and more than slightly masochistic author of Reading the OED. The word lover’s Mount Everest, the OED has enthralled logophiles since its initial publication 80 years ago. Weighing in at 137 pounds, it is the dictionary to end all dictionaries.

In 26 chapters filled with sharp wit, sheer delight, and a documentarian’s keen eye, Shea shares his year inside the OED, delivering a hair-pulling, eye-crossing account of reading every word, and revealing the most obscure, hilarious, and wonderful gems he discovers along the way.

This book changed my life! 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

An earlier edition of Jeff Herman's book changed my life! I found a great agent in it and now I have had nearly 17 books published, most of which have been since I was accepted by my first agent, Bert Holtje (now retired) whose name I found in Jeff Herman. This is a book written by a literary agent and gives us all the inside scoop on what individual literary agents are seeking. Most of the worthwhile publishers these days only take agented books, and any sensible author nowadays has an agent. This is the best book by far for those wanting an agent, and as someone whose publishing life has been changed by it I cannot recommend it too highly to my fellow authors! Christopher Catherwood (author of CHURCHILL'S FOLLY: HOW WINSTON CHURCHILL CREATED IRAQ, agented by Gene Brissie of James Peters Associates, MAKING WAR IN THE NAME OF GOD, agented by his successor Ed Claflin, and now represented by the legendary Frank Weimann and Jaimee Garbacik of Literary Group International, for WINSTON CHURCHILL: THE FLAWED GENIUS OF WORLD WAR TWO, all of whom have appeared in earlier and current editions of this book)

Editorial Review:

Calling all writers, get your manuscripts out of the “slush pile” and into the bookstore with Jeff Herman’s Guide to Book Publishers, Editors & Literary Agents. More comprehensive than ever before—and now 1,000 pages—this revised edition describes the insider dynamics at hundreds of U.S. and Canadian publishers, with hundreds of names and specialties for book acquisition editors. Nearly 200 of the most powerful literary agents reveal invaluable tips, as if they were having a private conversation with a special friend. With detailed information on what to do (and what not to do) to break the code, break down the walls, and get that first book, second book, or thirtieth book published, bought and read, Jeff Herman’s Guide is the go-to source for writers everywhere.

Editorial Review:

The difference between The First Five Pages and most books on writing is that the others are written by teachers and writers. This one comes from a literary agent--one whose clients include Pulitzer Prize nominees, New York Times bestselling authors, Pushcart Prize recipients, and American Book Award winners. Noah Lukeman is not trying to impart the finer points of writing well. He wants to teach you "how to identify and avoid bad writing," so that your manuscript doesn't come boomeranging back to you in that self-addressed, stamped envelope. Surprise: Agents and editors don't read manuscripts for fun; they are looking for reasons to reject them. Lukeman has arranged his book "in the order of what I look for when trying to dismiss a manuscript," starting with presentation and concluding with pacing and progression. Each chapter addresses a pitfall of poor writing--overabundance of adjectives and adverbs, tedious or unrealistic dialogue, and lack of subtlety to name just a few--by identifying the problem, presenting solutions, giving examples (one wishes these weren't quite so obvious), and offering writing exercises. It's a little bizarre to think about approaching your work as would an agent, but if you are serious about getting published, you may as well get used to it. Plus, Lukeman has plenty of solid advice worth listening to. Particularly fine are his exercises for removing and spicing up modifiers and his remedies for all kinds of faulty dialogue. --Jane Steinberg

Editorial Review:

The first edition of Garner's Modern American Usage established Bryan Garner as "an American equivalent of Fowler" (Library Journal). With more than 23,500 copies sold, this witty, accessible, and engaging book has become the new classic reference work praised by professional copyeditors as well as the general public looking for clear advice on how to write more effectively. In 1999, Choice magazine named it an Outstanding Academic Book and the American Library Association dubbed it an Outstanding Reference Source. With thousands of succinct entries, longer essays on key issues and problematic areas, and up-to-the-minute judgments on everything from trendy words to the debate over personal pronouns, GMAU is approachable yet authoritative.
Since the book first appeared in 1998, Bryan Garner has diligently continued tracking how we use our language. The second edition includes hundreds of new entries ranging from Dubya to weaponize (coined in 1984 but used extensively since 9/11) to foot-and-mouth, plethora (a "highfalutin equivalent of too many"), Slang, Standard English, and Dialects. It also updates hundreds of existing entries. Meanwhile, Garner has written a major essay on the great grammar debate between descriptivists and prescriptivists. Painstakingly researched with copious citations from books and newspapers and newsmagazines, this new edition furthers Garner's mission to help everyone become a better writer, and to enjoy it in the process.

Opinion of Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is an excellent book. Its approach to teaching a language is unique in that it gives fourteen patterns of Spanish words relating to English words. Rather than learning one word at a time, I can learn 50 - 100 words. I don't even have to learn individual words. I just have to remember the pattern, e.g. words ending in "ity" in English usually end in "idad" in Spanish. I also have been able to apply some of these patterns to other Latin-based languages such as French and Italian. This has been a great help to me since I sometimes do research work in Europe. Thank you for making this book available to us at such a reasonable price.

Very good 4 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

OK, it's not perfect. It is, however, a good book, better than most textbooks, and way, way ahead of Berlitz, for learning Spanish. Most Americans think they can learn a language in like 2-3 weeks. This is not so. It takes consistent practice to learn a language. This book supports that rather well. I'm sure the author is long gone, however, the book lives on. It is cited in The Next Whole Earth Catalog, by way, which is why I got my first copy of it.

Editorial Review:

Anyone can read, write, and speak Spanish in only a few short weeks with this unique and proven method, which completely eliminates rote memorization and boring drills.
