The Absolute Best "How-To Get Your Writing Career Started" Book on the Market 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 2 people found this review helpful.

"The Business of Writing for Children" is an exceptional guide for all writers. There are loads of books on the market that deal with writing, but Aaron Shepard's work is a diamond amongst lead pellets. He shares his real life experiences that have led him to become a world renowned author. Reading the book was like being able to sit down face to face with a children's lit superstar to teach me all about the business.
There are several features that make Shepard's book superior to others in the field.

First, the book is a step-by-step guide. Shepard presents a logical sequence of events to follow to accomplish your writing goals. Second, Shepard shares the lessons that he learned as a new author struggling to get his work published to the accomplished writer he is today. Third, he lays out how to format your work in the manner that editors look for. Fourth, he provides unique strategies to make your manuscripts stand out on editors' desks. Fifth, Shepard explains how to get your work to editors who do not take unsolicited work. Sixth, the book gives an array of ideas to market your work and yourself. These are only a few of the things that I found to be extremely useful in this book.

Additionally, the book is not filled with fluff. It is only about 100 pages long. Some of the other books on this subject are hundreds of pages long. I found that all of the larger books available are filled with a lot of useless information; whereas, Shepard only supplies useful and relevant information. I appreciated his approach because I felt that I needed a straight forward approach to help me on my writing journey.

Editorial Review:

Everyone loves a children's book. And many dream about writing one. But is it actually possible for an unpublished writer—armed with a good story idea and a love of kids—to write, sell, publish, and promote a book? Yes, it is! Veteran children's book publishing executive and author Lisa Rojany Buccieri and author Peter Economy show you how, in their incredibly useful 2005 first edition of Writing Children's Books For Dummies®.

Buccieri and Economy begin by explaining the basics of the children's book business, from the nuts and bolts of the various formats and genres—with helpful illustrations to aid you—to the intricacies of the book publishing market, a list of recent award-winning books, and a first peek into the particular mind set that writing children's books requires. (Hint: Throw out the adult rules, and think like a kid!)

Then the authors dive into the actual writing process itself, with tips on setting up a workspace, brainstorming great book ideas, researching the subject you decide on, even speaking with the sorts of kids you hope will eventually read the book. They show you how to create compelling characters and develop them in the manuscript; how to outline and write a plot "arc" of conflict, change, and resolution; how to master the difficult art of writing dialogue; and how to use active (rather than passive) language to keep your story moving along and interesting to young minds.

Or, if you're planning to write a creative nonfiction children's book—on a topic such as science, nature, or a historical figure, for example—the authors include a chapter on this, too. Ready, set, go… it's time to sit down and write!

Once you've finished your book, however, the process has only begun. Now you will refine, submit, and hopefully sell your manuscript. Here again, the authors of Writing Children's Books For Dummies come through for you. They deliver solid advice on hiring an illustrator—or not; participating in workshops and conferences to learn the business and hone a story; finding an agent; and, finally, submitting the manuscript to publishers and—if you are successful—signing a contract.

Along the way, the authors also include tips on handling rejection; a quick primer on the various editors in publishing houses (and how they work to make your book its best); and making a plan to publicize the book, including hiring a publicist if necessary.

Like all For Dummies® books, Writing Children's Books For Dummies highlights "The Part of Tens," which includes the Ten Best Ways to Promote Your Story and More Than Ten Great Sources for Storylines. And the ever-helpful Cheat Sheet includes Tips for Editing your Children's Book Manuscript, Children's Book No-No's, Twelve Commandments for Writing Younger Children's Books, and Tips on Promotion.

From setting down that first word on paper to doing a successful publicity tour, Writing Children's Books For Dummies gives you the confidence and the insiders' know-how to write and sell the story you've always wanted to write.

Editorial Review:

The Writer's Guide to Crafting Stories for Children offers detailed information and an indepth examination of storytelling and story structure. Books on writing for children sell exceedingly well, so it's surprising that no other book focuses on this important aspect of the craft. Using examples from classic and contemporary sources, Nancy Lamb explores all the key elements of children's storytelling, from point of view to structure to plotting and pacing. Taking a hands-on approach, Lamb uses worksheets, exercises, and checklists to show writers how to capture and keep a young reader's attention, whether the topic is fact or fiction.

Creating Children's Books 101 5 out of 5 stars.
12 of 12 people found this review helpful.

Uri Shulevitz's book Writing With Pictures is a treasure trove of valuable information concerning writing/illustrating children's books. For those with no interest whatsoever in illustration, the book explains how illustrations enhance and fulfill the promise of the text. For those only interested in illustration, the book describes how to correctly construct illustrations so that they illuminate, rather than repeat, the prose.

The book is divided in four parts. Part one defines/contrasts picture books and story books; two, describes how to plan the book; three, explains the construction and purpose of illustrations; and four, provides instruction on how to prepare illustrations for reproduction for publishing.

Although the book could be used for college courses in both art and literature, it is easily readable, enjoyable and informative. For individuals serious about writing and/or illustrating books for children, this book is a must-have resource. It's a keeper!

Editorial Review:

From preliminary idea to finished storyboard to finding a publisher, every step in the fascinating process of creating children's books is detailed in this guide.

This is a good book for helping a beginner writer think about all
of the elements of the writing process and industry. There are
good pointers, but you will not find very specific answers here.

A really wonderful resource for novice writers!!! 5 out of 5 stars.

I have always loved creative writing, and I think that like me, anyone who enjoys writing entertains the thought of writing a book at one point or another. I began thumbing through this at a bookstore one afternoon and was sold on it in about 30 seconds.
The authors of this book are realistic - they know that when people sit down and begin to write, the journey begins to look quite daunting and many give up after a few lines or pages. There is a lot to learn, to think about, to research. They want you to give it the old college try, as they say, so this book is here to help you and make it a bit more fun along the way! This "how to" helpers guide gives tips on making your own space to write in, finding your "voice" and genre, keeping journals for ideas and to fan those artistic flames, literary terms, and even some writing seminars to attend and publishers of children's literature.
The tone of any advice in this book is firm but reassuring. Don't expect to get overnight results or quit your job for instant fame and success, but DO work hard and have fun while you're crafting your masterpiece, and something great may come of it. With any luck and this book by my side, who knows? Maybe I'll turn out the next "Harry Potter" series. :o)

Editorial Review:

The Everything Guide to Writing Children's Books is a must-have for aspiring children's story writers. The children's book industry can be one of the toughest to crack. Successful writer and editor Lesley Bolton shows you how to: * Formulate ideas * Create an outline for your manuscript * Write the book - literally! * Find an illustrator * Send your submission to an agent/publisher * Negotiate a contract * To getting involved in marketing, publicity, and much more

Love it--I'm sure you will, too! 5 out of 5 stars.
55 of 59 people found this review helpful.

What do you do when you don't feel like writing? You go online and review your favorite writing books on Amazon.com!

Creating Characters Kids Will Love is really a must-have for the wanna-be children's writer. This book and "Story Sparkers" (also available here--look for the set and save money!) are the best write-for-children guides I own, and I own nearly every one on the market!

The fun large format makes this book feel sort of like a workbook (though it really isn't), and it's easy to just flip to a section and start reading some helpful info without starting at the beginning. This is how I find myself reading this books much of the time (I get stuck writing and take a break by just reading some advice out of one of these). There's some very good stuff here, and lots and lots of recommendations for books and magazines to read, if you're the kind who'll actually go find the stuff!

This book concentrates on character development, with some how-tos on plot structure and conflict (as they relate to character development!) thrown in. Also, if you're interested in writing true stories or maybe historical fiction, there are chapters for you. All in all, it's really a good read. Even if you don't relate to the author's own examples of writing, you'll come away with a better idea of what kids (and publishers) expect in your manuscript. Good luck!

Editorial Review:

To successfully write books that children will read and treasure, you need to discover what makes a kid want to curl up with a book in the first place. CREATING CHARACTERS KIDS WILL LOVE can make the difference between publishing success and failure. The book explains how characters, more than any other story element, draw kids to the page and keep them hooked from the beginning to end. You'll find dozens of methods you can use to make your own characters more lively and compelling.

A Fun Read with Great Tips! 5 out of 5 stars.
6 of 6 people found this review helpful.

I found this book very useful. I did not at all feel like the author was writing down to me. In fact I found the way she presented her information to be playful and fun. I ended up checking out the novels she's written and was pleased to find the same level of writing in her YA novels. She seems to have a strong following with young readers and since industry critics have recognized her as a great writer, I feel the lessons I learned from her "how to book" will, help me greatly.

Good how-to writing book for YA writers! 4 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

I think this is an excellent resource if you are a YA writer or thinking about writing YA. There are not many current YA writing books out there and the ones that do exist were too basic and generalized for me. The thing I took away the most from this book was the teen Q&A sections. They were so relevant that I ended up changing a major part of my YA WIP. I would have liked even more of these sections.

Some of the information in the book was basic (for example, instead of spending a lot of time on POV and other beginning writing topics, I would have liked to have known more about YA itself or seen more examples from YA novels). I also didn't care for the way the sections were broken down by school subjects (too gimmicky).

But it is very rare that I read a how-to writing book from cover to cover, and I did so with this book. Overall I really enjoyed it. (Way more so than The Idiot's Guide to Writing for Young Adults).

Editorial Review:

Learn what a young adult novel is, how to write young adult fiction, how to get it published, and how to promote it. This title covers writing for young adults from start to finish: offering instruction on writing for this special audience including discussions of plot, setting, characters and revision. It gives tips on getting your novel published and promoting it once you have a book contract; and offers insight from teenage readers.
