Spiritual warfare 101 5 out of 5 stars.
0 of 0 people found this review helpful.

This is quite simply the best book I have read on spiritual conflicts and warfare. I was blessed immensely by it. Neil Anderson uses scripture, personal stories, and the warmth and understanding of a counselor to expose the darkness and lies of satan. After reading this I am much more aware of the enemy's schemes and am able to effectively combat the lies with the truth of God's word. The book itself is not a cure-all problem solver - it is a truth exposer and a pointer in the right direction. I highly recommend this and "Victory Over the Darkness" especially to Christians stuggling with depression, anxiety, fear, lust, or anger. I also highly recommend this book to any Christian seeking to understand spiritual warfare. I give Neil Anderson's books the highest possible recommendation.

The only spiritual book you'll ever need. 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Emmet Fox once paid Florence Scoville Schinn (see "The Game of Life and How to Play It") a great compliment by writing that her works were accessible even to those who did not wish to devote their attention to deeper study. I believe that's true also of "The Sermon on the Mount."

For Christians seeking deeper faith and understanding without committing years to reading the Bible, attending weekly church services, or joining a Bible study group, try this book. Since I was little, I've felt strongly that Jesus is my link to joy and knowing. I've been drawn to the Book of Matthew as the story of Jesus that most resonates with me, and to the Sermon on the Mount as the essence of the teachings of Jesus.

Fox's treatment of the Sermon on the Mount, section by section, provides the key to understanding the entire Bible. It's easy to read and, more importantly, every paragraph and every sentence stands alone as a complete message about what's facing me today.

For those of a metaphysical bent, you can hardly find a more complete, more accurate, simpler statement of truth. My dowsing rates this book higher on the Hawkins scale than any book I've ever encountered.

For those emersed in "A Course in Miracles," Fox has written the pocket version - easy to carry and study - and the perfect introduction to those with whom we'd like to share The Course.

For those working the twelve steps, know that Fox's writings inspired Bill Wilson. Read "The Sermon on the Mount" as a loving companion to the Big Book.

You can read other books by Fox if you'd like, or other great works by other inspired spiritual writers, but you only NEED this one.

Editorial Review:

Fresh with contemporary relevance, this classic of positive thinking from one of the world's great motivational writers offers galvanizing insights on self-transformation. Based on Emmet Fox's simple message that "thoughts are things" and all potential lies in their creative and constructive use, these thirty-one inspiring essays how to have it all -- health, healing, happiness, and a liberated spirit -- through the power of constructive though. First published in 1940, Power Through Constructive Thinking has been a never-failing source of strength and renewal for generations of readers.

Editorial Review:

Why is this Bible different from all other Bibles? Because it is the only English version fully Jewish in style and presentation. It includes Dr. Stern's new version of the "Tanakh" ("Old Testament") and his highly acclaimed "Jewish New Testament."

The Complete Jewish Bible:

- follows the Hebrew Bible order of the Tanakh's books, the order with which Yeshua (Jesus) was familiar
- makes no separation between "Old" and "New" Testaments
- corrects misinterpretations in the New Testament resulting from anti-Jewish theological bias
- offers the original Hebrew names for people, places, and concepts, using easy-to-read English transliterations
- focuses on Messianic prophecy
- gives the traditional weekly and holiday synagogue readings, plus relevant readings from the "B'rit Hadashah" (New Testament)

The Complete Jewish Bible:

- reconnects Christians with their Jewish roots and the Jewish people
- connects Jews with the Jewishness of Messiah Yeshua and Messianic faith

Other features of this Bible: a comprehensive introduction, a pronouncing explanatory glossary, a reverse glossary, and special maps to aid Bible understanding.

The Jesus I used to know 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Philip Yancey, in THE JESUS I NEVER KNEW, lets slip with a few secrets that you never learned in Sunday School (nor even, for that matter, in THE DA VINCI CODE). Example: Have you heard the one about Jesus catching a bad case of leprosy? (p. 79). [He got it from rubbing spit-and-mud on an elderly leper, neglecting then to wash his hands before lunch. Two weeks later, when the lesions appeared, Jesus healed himself using the same trusted remedy, and Presto! he was good to go.]

Yancey's disclosures are precisely what make this book so important: Indeed, THE JESUS I NEVER KNEW has been "Critically acclaimed as the most significant book of the last ten years" (and it's not just Phil Yancey who says so, I take that quote directly from the book jacket).

Phil grew up long before the days of Christian video games, like that one in which you blast to smithereens the Jews who want to nail Jesus to the cross. As a child, Phil Yancey thought that Jesus was just some two-dimensional bearded figure in a boring flannelgraph story; after which, the teacher gave you KoolAid and sugar cookies. Later, as a teen, Phil was able to admire Jesus as a role model--a bootlegger who, when his Mom rebuked him, sassed her with such rude remarks as "Woman, what have I to with THEE?" But when Phil (as a grown man) finally came to know the true Lord of glory, he discovered "a Jesus who is brilliant, creative, challenging, fearless, compassionate, unpredictable, and ultimately satisfying"--not unlike Robert Powell in Franco Zeffirelli's film version (p. 77); in fact, I'd say almost EXACTLY like Robert Powell in Franco Zeffirelli's film version.

I actually like Jesus, quite a lot. Jesus, back when I first knew him, was (a.) the Son of Yahveh, and (b.) a very nice, well-adjusted person, which, when you consider those two facts side by side, is no small accomplishment. And I totally agree with most of what Phil has to say in this book about the real Jesus: "brilliant," yes; "creative," yes; "challenging," absolutely. I endorse all of his epithets except the last: "ultimately satisfying?" Not! Just ask Mary Magdalene, she'll back me up. "What would Jesus do?" is a fascinating question, but it's exactly what we never knew; and (trust me!) no one tried harder to find out the answer, than Mary Magdalene.

My favourite part of Phil's book is Chapter 4, "Temptation: Showdown in the Desert." Here's the story, which is one that Philip Yancey never used to know. In 28 CE, Jesus and I spent six weeks together, hiking in the wilderness and then taking a tour of Jerusalem. We talked. We reminisced. We shared our fantasies. My idea was for Jesus to have a little fun while he lived among humankind, maybe even commit a harmless sin or two, just as a life-experience; but he was not open to that suggestion (Mark 1:13). When he became hungry, I tempted him to turn stones into bread. He didn't bite. When he felt discouraged, I tempted him to throw himself off a pinnacle without getting hurt, thereby to prove his divinity. He didn't jump. Testing the limits of his courtesy, I offered him a sizable chunk of real estate - the entire planet - if he would pay me a single compliment of the sort Yahveh gets every day of the year. No thanks. And when he was horny - yes, Jesus was tempted in all points like any other man, but without sin - I'd catch his attention with some short-togaed Roman shiksa and whisper in his ear and say, "Hey, Jesus, how'd you like some o' that before returning to Heaven!" (Hebrews 4:15).

But Jesus would just his squeeze eyes shut in that cute way he has, and say, "Woe unto you, Lucifer, for trying to make me think about that!" (Matt. 4:1-11).

In retrospect, I have always felt my timing was off: for it was immediately after the baptismal service - right after he saw his Father looking down on us from Heaven - that I tempted Jesus to dabble in sin. I should have tempted him to dabble sooner, during his adolescence. Instead, Jesus' unassailable virtue struck a harmful blow to my self-esteem. It's quite unusual when I earnestly tempt someone to sin, for my suggestions to be rejected flat out. But with Jesus I hit a brick wall. I tried every rhetorical, Jesuitical, trick in the book. I could not even make Jesus WANT to dabble in sin. So I guess you could say that, between the two of us, Jesus proved himself the better man. He is certainly more obedient than I am. Well, more power to him! I've got no beef with Jesus. I just wish that I could have got to know him a little better before he scooted back up to Heaven and left us with a planet full of Christians.

Editorial Review:

Everyone has their own version of Jesus--a soft and fluffy Sunday school flannelboard Jesus, a distant stained glass cathedral Christ, an all-powerful defender of the faith, a wise rabbi who never breaks a sweat. But who is Jesus really? Best-selling author and respected journalist Philip Yancey takes a deeper look at the Christ of the Gospels. From the manger in Bethlehem to the cross in Jerusalem, Yancey reveals a complex character who generates questions as well as answers; a disturbing and exhilarating Jesus who wants to radically transform your life and stretch your faith. The Jesus I Never Knew is a piercingly honest look at the person and the life of Jesus of Nazareth by a writer who is not afraid to tackle the difficult issues of the Christian faith.

Excellent reference book for the Bible 5 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

I am Catholic and as you may know Catholics don't read or study the Bible. Of course, the readings for each Mass are from both the Old and the New Testiments but there is no continuity or chronological flow. This book rearranges some of the books of the Bible based on when they were actually written. Has a section detailing when each book occurred in time, and a descriptions of weights and measurement (actually tells the size of the famous "cubit"). The language of the verses has been modernized almost to the extent that you appear to be reading a novel instead of the old text of the Bible. I have compared the theme of the verse with the actual Bible version and the meanings are exactly the same only this book makes it understandable.
The daily selections take about 15 minutes but it becomes so interesting I tend to read ahead.

Editorial Review:

The One Year Chronological Bible is ideal for anyone who wants to take a fresh look at the Bible by reading it in the order the events actually happened. You can read the entire Bible in as little as 15 minutes a day with this One Year Bible, the best-selling daily reading Bible brand. Scripture index included.

Best English & Greek Interlinear Available Today 5 out of 5 stars.
2 of 2 people found this review helpful.

It's always an exciting day, when the UPS or Fed Ex truck stops by my house with new books. I was especially excited when The English - Greek Reverse Interlinear New Testament showed up at my door. The first thought I had when I began to page through it was, "Where have you been all my life?" In my pursuit of biblical & theological studies over the past 12 years, I've used a number of different Greek new testaments. However, none of them were interlinear. This is mostly due to the fact that I was unable to find an interlinear Greek new testament with the right combination of features that would make it a compelling addition to my library. That being said, The English - Greek Reverse Interlinear New Testament is just the interlinear I've been looking for. Crossway has raised the bar for interlinear new testaments with this publication!

First, I'd like to talk about the binding. I think Crossway made the right choice to publish this work in hardcover. Many of the bibles available today have a soft or flexible cover. For many of the thinner and smaller bibles, I think this is definitely the way to go. However, for a work of this size, I prefer hardcover for several reasons. Hardcover books tend to hold up better on the shelf. They also tend to wear better than soft / flex cover books in the backpack or laptop bag many of us have in tow as we travel to class, church, or the library. Lastly, hardcover books tend to be easier to keep open on a desk or library table, whereas soft / flex cover books are nearly impossible to lay flat.

Next, let's move beyond the cover and binding and talk about the many important things you'll find within the pages of this new testament. If you're like me, you'll want to jump right into the biblical text and start reading. I'd encourage you to hold off for a few minutes and spend some time reading the introductory material following the table of contents. Spending a few minutes here will definitely help you to make the most of the textual features found within. The introductory material is as follows:

* Preface to the English Standard Version (explains translation methodology for the ESV)
* Explanation of Features, English Standard Version (discusses features in ESV text: section headings & footnotes)
* Preface (explanation of interlinear and reverse interlinear, brief essay by John Schwandt - Overcoming the Objections of the Dangers of Dabbling in Greek)
* Introduction (explains layout of interlinear text: ESV, Greek, transliteration, parsing codes, Strong's numbers)
* Guide to Parsing Codes (further explanation of parsing codes)

Once you finish with the introductory material, you'll be ready to jump into the biblical text. The English text is based on the ESV Text Edition: 2007. The Greek text is based on the Nestle-Aland, Novum Testamentum Graece, 27th Revised Edition. The reverse in reverse interlinear comes about by displaying the English text on top of the Greek text. Traditional interlinear new testaments tend to display the Greek text first. One of the things I appreciate about this layout is that with the English on top, I feel it allows me to effectively use this new testament for my devotional time as well as my academic study time. If it was laid out like a traditional interlinear, I think I'd be rather distracted by the Greek text above the English. The 2nd line contains the Greek text. The Greek text is ordered, so it lines up with the corresponding English word or phrase above it. This sometimes puts the Greek text out of order from how it appears in a traditional NA27 Greek new testament. Please note that there is a number to the right of each Greek word to indicate the word order for the entire verse as it appears in the NA27 Greek new testament. The third line, which follows the Greek text, is the English transliteration of the Greek word. This is very helpful for the less experienced reader who may not know how to correctly pronounce the all of the Greek words. The fourth line, which follows the transliteration, contains the parsing codes. These parsing codes allow the reader to understand the morphology of the Greek word. Trying to remember what these codes mean looks like it could be difficult. Have no fear, each two-page spread of the new testament text, has the most significant parsing codes listed at the bottom. Finally, the 5th line lists the Strong's number. This is an important feature, because it allows the reader to quickly look up that specific Greek word in an electronic lexicon. While I to do this through Logos Bible Software, I realize that many may not have access to this software. As an alternate, there are many free lexicon resources available on the internet.

Let me close by saying that I am very pleased with The English - Greek Reverse Interlinear New Testament. This is a prime example of the quality of work that is possible when three fine organizations like Crossway, The German Bible Society, & Logos Bible Software collaborate on a project. As I stated earlier, I have found this new testament useful for both my devotional time and academic study. I highly recommend this new testament for anybody wishing to expand their new testament study to include both Greek and English. My only word of caution is to 1st and 2nd year Greek students. You would be better served by having a standard Greek new testament as your primary Greek text for school work. The English - Greek Reverse Interlinear New Testament would be a great resource for double-checking your parsing and translation after you've worked over the Greek text on your own. Finally, there is one additional bonus to this new testament. Attached to the back cover of this book, you will find a CD-ROM containing an electronic copy of the English Standard Version and several other study tools. All things considered, this is a great resource for a very reasonable price. Let me end with one final thought. While I understand there would potentially be a smaller audience, I'd love to see a similar resource for the Hebrew old testament. I'll be so bold as to suggest the following title: The English - Hebrew Reverse Interlinear Old Testament.

Editorial Review:

Valuable Resources Included

* Transliterations of all Greek words for easy pronunciation
* Strong's numbers for effective cross-referencing to other study tools
* Morphology of each word
* Free electronic version of the ESV on CD-ROM, with additional study tools

Now this makes sense! Finally someone made a easy to read & understand translation! 5 out of 5 stars.
3 of 3 people found this review helpful.

This is great to have a translation that doesn't skip all around. This makes the Bible so much easier to read & understand. I'm not a beginner but wanted a Bible told in chronological order just for a different perspective. I've even picked up on things that I didn't in my regular Living Bible. It gives a fresh feel to it so maybe I was paying better attention & got more understanding. This Bible would be a great choice for anyone and especially for beginners because of the NLT, which uses our everyday language. If you've never read a Bible with a New Living Translation, it will SO OPEN up the Bible to you. If you get the meaning, then God's word will start to truly work in your life like never before! I never understood the King James Version & the stories meant very little to me because I felt like I could not relate. I had heard the same stories for years growing up & in & out of church but I didn't understand God's word & it wasn't effective until I bought a Living Bible translation & finally got true understanding of his word. The NLT is the newest translation after the Living Bible translation. Also, I like the size of the Bible, not too big & heavy but not too small either. The font size is perfect, no squinting or holding it closer to read. Great choice in a Bible!

The Best New Testament Translation Ever 5 out of 5 stars.
5 of 5 people found this review helpful.

The Voice New Testament is something unique. It is :
1. Written by scholars and writers together so that it is beautifully written and entirely faithful to the original text.
2. Written with commentary that is part of the body of the text, but separated from the verses. This commentary makes the New Testament incredibly understandable for people with little or much Biblical knowledge.
3. Written in a screenplay format when people are speaking so that it is obvious who is speaking.
4. A continuous story -- when pieces of other books are needed in the middle of a book to make the story flow in a chronilogical way, then those pieces of other books are inserted into the text.
5. Easy to read; easy to understand.

I own multiple Bibles with lots of different translations of the New Testament, and this is the best one I've ever run across.

I can't wait for them to come out with the Old Testament.

Overall good 4 out of 5 stars.
1 of 1 people found this review helpful.

Overall this is a great buy, the different voices with different inflextions and emotions and the sound affects in the background all add to bringing the text to life. The only problem I have with this product is a small one but it is that the voices of all of the angels are woman's voices even though the text identifies them in the male gender. I am not saying that angels have a gender but the Bible consistently speaks of them in the male gender and the CD's are confusing when you hear, "Then he said to her..." and it is a female voice talking." Just something to look out for.
